- The threatened estate - the memorails of Per Brahe junior On the background of the present research on memorials and monuments follows a study of a number of memorials erected by the count Per Brahe junior between 1653 and 1680 on Visingsö and in Skärstad in Småland, at Dimbo in Västergötland and Östra Ryd in Uppland. The memorials belong to a period, when his county Visingsborg in Sweden and barony Kajana in Finland were threatened by reduction. The number of memorial stones grew with increasing demands on reduction during the 1670s.

- The article traces the Lundagård rune-stone on its road in Lund – from its origin as a part of a Viking Age monument probably at Helgonabacken, its reuse at the All Saints monastery, where it was rediscovered in 1682, to the park Lundagård in the 1740s, its reuse in a memorial in the old Botanical Garden in 1868 to its location in the university library since 1957. The movements are perceived as actions to render the past new meaning and relevance, when the monument has fallen into oblivion. The occurrence of rune-stones at churches e.g. the cathedral of Uppsala is interpreted as “spolia” or expressions of historicism. Furthermore, the motives with two masks and two armed wolfs are given a new interpretation as showing Odin and the memorized brethren Olof and Ottar as his “ulfhednar”, e.g. berserk warriors.

- The Canons of Dalby. Three Studies I. When did the brothers in Dalby become Augustinians? There are different opinions among historians about what kind of community Egino founded in Dalby in the late 1060s. Some say it was Benedictine, others say it was a community of canons. Among the latter, some say they were regular canons, others that they were secular, and one distinguished historian has even claimed that they were Augustinians from the very beginning. This study argues that the community must be understood in relation to ideals of canonical living that were developing rapidly at the time. A movement of reform had started in the 1040s with the aim that large churches should be served by celibate priests living in community without private possessions. Establishments where canons lived separately and had property were reformed and new communities were founded in accordance with the new ideals. The language that Adam of Bremen uses when describing the community in Dalby strongly suggests that he thought of it as part of the reform: he describes them as living regulariter, which was a catch-word among the reformers. If they did adhere to the reform, we need not speculate when the Dalby brethren “became” Augustinians: the reform canons generally adopted the Rule of St. Augustine in the early decades of the 12th century, not as a new step but as a way of defining what they already were. Only in the 13th century did provincial chapters begin to occur and an “Order of St. Augustine” take shape. II. Fragments from the history of the canons of Dalby. Few documents remain that can tell us anything about the life lived in the monastery of Dalby during the 450 years of its existence. This study presents a brief survey of the documents and what they say. We have names of 31 officers (styled dean, provost or prior), 98 canons and 9 lay brothers. From the names and their dating we can deduce that the monastery, during its heyday in the 12th and 13th centuries, housed 10–12 canons on an average. The name of the monastery changed: in the 12th and 13th centuries it was called either Dalbyensis ecclesia or Sancta Crux; from the 14th century onward the normal name was simply “Dalby Monastery” or “the monastery in Dalby”. In earliest times it was led by a provost, possibly assisted by a dean; from the mid-12th century the head was called prior and his second-in-command subprior (the latter is only attested once, in 1439). From about 1440 the priorate was held “in commendam” by dignitaries at the cathedral of Lund, and once even by an Italian cardinal. The now merely titular head of the monastery came to be called provost (meaning simply chief?) after 1466. In the early 16th century a resident canon was again made provost by the king and held the office until the monastery's dissolution in the 1530s. III. The buildings of Dalby monastery. West of the church of Dalby there was between the 11th and 14th centuries a complex of buildings that has been interpreted as a royal manor but must have been used, wholly or in part, by the canons. The three extant monastic buildings lie northwest and north of the church and belong to a complex that cannot be older than the 13th century. The two to the northwest are a storehouse and a stable. The present farmhouse north of the church was once the western building in a traditional cloister. On the ground floor of this house there is a vaulted corridor that was once part of a crosswalk. This study discusses the medieval extent of the cloister and crosswalk, attempting to modify some previous theories. It also raises the question of what happened to the canons after a devastating fire in 1388 all but destroyed the monastery. It appears as if only the western (extant) building of the cloister was rebuilt. If the remainder was left in ruins, what happened to the canons? Did they set up separate quarters in the village, perhaps in stone buildings, of which there exists some scattered evidence?

- Interpretations of the church, monastery and manor of Dalby have focused primarily on the history and functions of the buildings, but symbolic interpretations have been involved too. The article discusses four categories of symbolic interpretations: Power Symbols, Cosmic Symbols, Biblical Symbols and Geographical Symbols. The conclusion is that it is hard, when dealing with specific buildings, to demonstrate which symbolical meanings were intended and recognized by people living in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The line between scholarship and madness is thin. No strict method for avoiding madness exists, but it is wise to consciously avoid anachronisms, doubt one’s favourite mental images and take seriously any facts that “disturb” a seemingly plausible interpretation. Historical knowledge, constant practice and dialogue with other scholars are other preconditions. Risks remain, but the symbolic richness of Dalby makes us take them gladly.

- Was there a connection between St. Mauritius and the oldest church in Dalby and what is the evidence for such a supposition? And, if such a connection can be established, what can be concluded about its impact on the formation and character of the ecclesiastical setting of early medieval Dalby? The idea about a connection between St. Mauritius and the oldest church in Dalby was introduced by the archaeologist Erik Cinthio. A main source for his hypothesis was a few references found in the capitulary of the cathedral chapter of St. Laurentius in Lund (c. 1120). As both St. Laurentius and St. Mauritius were popular as patron saints of rulers and churches in the Holy Roman Empire, Cinthio argued that this strengthened the already established idea of a strong German influence upon the oldest cathedrals in Lund and Dalby. In this article I examine if and how the hypothesis about a connection between St. Mauritius and the oldest church in Dalby can be maintained. The written evidence that may support such a scenario will be identified and the patronage of St. Mauritius and its impact, in general and in particular, and on the formation and character of the oldest ecclesiastical community in Dalby will be discussed. My conclusion is that no relation between St. Mauritius and the oldest church in Dalby can be established, whereas a such a connection can be found in Lund.

- The crypt in Dalby as a batisterium – a digital reconstruction The article presents an example of the on-going research at Dalby in Scania, Sweden, focusing on the baptismal font and its original medieval context. The site and the current research are presented. Dalby was a medieval cathedral, Augustinian monastery and maybe also a royal manor. The crypt and font from the 12th C are presented. The architecture and functions of the crypt have changed several times since its erection. The font, when first documented in the 19th C, was standing near the altar in the eastern part of the nave. After a restoration in the 1940s it was moved to the western end of the nave. However, after a functional and iconographic analysis of the crypt and the font, the hypothesis is put forward that the font originally was positioned in the middle of the crypt. During the Early Middle Ages the crypt would have functioned as a baptismal chapel with a well to draw water from, as was most likely also the case in nearby Lund cathedral. In order to perform a deeper study on the functionality of this space during the Middle Ages, 3D technologies such as terrestrial laser scanner and image based modelling techniques have been employed. The goal of this work is the visualization of the crypt with the font in its original setting, removing later additions and adding elements that would have been present in the 12th century. The use of such methods allowed us to reconstruct in high quality and with accuracy of details an environment that does not exist any longer, moreover the possibility to visualize and analyse our interpretation of the space in three dimensions, opened new perspectives regarding the number of people on the benches and how the crypt might have functioned

The case study is the medieval cathedral and monastery of Dalby in Sweden with a 12th century crypt and font. The crypt may have functioned as a baptismal chapel in the Middle Ages. Digital 3 D techniques including terrestrial laser scanner and image based modelling are used to reconstruct the original architecture of the crypt, to move back the font and to conduct simulations of the use of the space in the liturgy.

- This article discusses the emergence of the episcopal see in Växjö. Contrary to previous research, which has been focused on written sources only, this article also discusses the archaeological record. The result implies that vivid connections between Scania, Denmark and southern Småland can be traced in the Late Iron Age and Early Middle Ages. This is shown by similarities in grave types, runic stones and medieval stone churches. The initiative for the new diocese can probably be found in regional elite groups acting in cooperation with the archbishop in Lund.

- The main themes of the thesis are burial customs and social identities, and how medieval and post-Reformation graves can provide information on such as age structures, phases in life, gender relations and social organization. The study is based on nine groups of Scandinavian material, and it comprises four case studies. The first one deals with social zoning in medieval cemeteries and how age and gender structures varied within and between different social strata. The second concerns ‘atypical’ medieval burials, such as graves in which individuals have been buried in a deviant or peripheral position; and it also focusses on burials of the sick and the impaired. The third case study examines two mainly medieval burial practices: the use of charcoal and burial rods, and possible interpretations of their inclusion in graves. The fourth study deals with post-Reformation burial customs; how they differ from the medieval ones and what notions may have caused the changes in practice. It is concluded that in the Early Middle Ages, social identity was to a large extent intermingled with group identity. Towards the twelfth century, the social boundaries were sharpened and burial customs emphasizing personal aspects such as gender, age and body developed. A person’s biological status was a major factor in determining gender and social identities, and thereby also social status. In the Late Middle Ages the inner burial customs became more homogeneous, probably as a result of new religious beliefs and ecclesiastical restrictions. After the Reformation, social differences in burial prevailed, and above all the memorials displayed and shaped social identities. The inner burial customs became more varied again, displaying a ‘revival’ of old customs. This was most likely caused by changes in religious practices: since the Church no longer provided comforting and protective ritualistic practices they were instead performed before the funeral by the next of kin.

- Kanon och kulturarv har diskuterats intensivt de senaste åren i Danmark och Sverige. I Danmark har regeringens beslut att definiera en dansk kanon väckt stor debatt. I Sverige har diskussionen varit hovsammare samtidigt som ordet kulturarv har ett starkt grepp om museer, kulturmiljövård och arkiv. I Danmark har diskussionen kretsat kring vad som är danskt, vem som ska definiera danskheten och vilka konsekvenser det ska tillåtas få. I Sverige har debattinläggen handlat om kulturarvens användbarhet. Förutom i lokal, regional och nationell identitetspolitik har kulturarv kommit till användning inom en rad andra områden som hälso- och sjukvård, regional- och lokalutveckling, turism och mångkultur. Gemensamt för de danska och svenska erfarenheterna är att varken kulturarv eller kanon kan frigöras från politiska aspekter, ett faktum som i olika grad är uppenbart i bokens artiklar. Att utse företeelser till kulturarv eller att föra upp dem på en kanonlista är att vilja något med dem. Men vad? Och vilka platser, föremål och berättelser utses? På vilka grunder? Och av vem? I Kanon och kulturarv skriver 18 forskare om olika sätt att aktivt förhålla sig till och använda det förflutna och vilka konsekvenser det får i olika sammanhang. Boken är organiserad kring tre teman – minnen, skola och politik. Landskap, industrianläggningar, europeiska konventioner, musik, minnesparker, propositioner, läroplaner och arkeologiska fyndplatser är några av de arenor som undersöks.

- Under 1100-talet kom cistercienserna och premonstratenserna att utgöra bland de mest spridda och inflytelserika religiösa ordnarna . Även om cistercienserna var en monastisk orden och premonstratenserna en klerikal orden var båda ett resultat av reformrörelser som strävade efter striktare ideal enligt deras respektive regler. För att möjliggöra detta hade de förlagt sina moderkloster i isolerade och öde områden, som speglade deras ideal. När de båda ordnarna etablerade sig i Danmark reflekterade cisterciensernas klosterplatser ännu detta ideal. Däremot varierade premonstratensernas val av platser, från rurala till urbana. I artikeln diskuteras hur det kom sig att den fysiska omgivningen skilde sig åt mellan ordnarna, trots att idealen i grunden var de samma. Studiens undersökningsområde utgörs av Skåne och Halland.
