  • Factory-in-a-Box - Solutions for Availability and Mobility of Flexible Production Capacity
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Swedish Production Symposium,2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to present examples of how to realize a flexible and reconfigurable production system. An ongoing research project in Sweden called Factory-in-a-Box will be presented which is one research initiative within this area. The purpose of the Factory-in-a-Box project is to develop solutions for mobile production capacity on demand. Three key features have been identified as enablers for these kinds of production capabilities: mobility, flexibility, and speed. The concept consists of standardized modules that can be installed in e.g. containers and easily transported by trucks, rail vehicles, and boats. The modules can easily be combined into complete production systems and reconfigured for new products and/or scaled to handle new volumes. The goal of the Factory-in-a-Box project is to build fully operative production modules that are developed in close cooperation between different academic and industrial partners. This paper will present the results from these demonstrators giving examples of the usability of the Factory-in-a-Box concept in industry.

  • An Economical Analysis on A Strategic Investment in an Assembly Line : Case Study at Ericsson Mobile Communications AB
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Production Research.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the last four years the global annual production of mobile telephones has increased four times. To Ericsson Mobile Communications AB’s supply unit in Linköping, Sweden, this has been a tremendous challenge. The supply unit has increased the produced volume of mobile telephones six times during this period at the same premises. The strategy for the production-engineering department was to change the manual assembly line into an automated assembly line. The automated assembly line was built up with SONY smart cells. During 1998 the volumes increased rapidly and the automation strategy where copied to the test stations for the mobile telephones. This paper discusses the importance of how to link a manufacturing strategy to economical calculations. A case study at Ericsson Mobile Communications AB shows how financial calculations was used when changing from manual testing to automated testing of mobile telephones. Even though all benefits were not accounted for, the studied automation project for automated board test had a calculated pay back period of 7 months. The decreasing production volumes for mobile telephones made that the real yearly cost for the investment increased dramatically compared to the calculated investment cost. The decision-makers need to analyze the risks in an investment calculation due to the uncertainty in data used in the calculations. For example, it can be difficult to analyze the risks depending on the difficulty to predict the development for the product market and the future product volumes. The investment calculation result can also differ depending on who is delivering the numerical data that are included in the calculations.

  • Model for change in production systems triggered by environmental requirements : considerations, drivers, key factors
  • 2015
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Industry is a key player in the transition to a sustainable society where manufacturing companies need to respond to the challenges of environmental concerns in several ways. Still, even if several efforts have been made in practise and academia, more research within operations management is addressed in relation to implementing sustainable solutions. The management of change in production systems, such as energy efficiency, will be one of the important future areas for the industry. In accordance, the objective of the licentiate thesis is, by theoretical and empirical work, focused on developing a model to support the implementation of environmental requirements. Literature reviews as well as two empirical case studies have been conducted in order to explore the environmentally driven change. The first case study conducted is an retrospective multiple case study, including four cases studying the implications of implementation of technology and identifying key factors effecting the outcome of the change. The second case study is an international multiple study, including nine case companies. The study explores what needs to be considered, the drivers for initiating change as well as the key factors effecting the outcome of the change process. The studies conducted and the results are presented in five appended papers. The research identifies three important links for managing environmentally driven change: how the requirements are introduced, how and if the link between strategic and operational level has been considered and how the need for change is transferred to action and implementation. By providing a system approach for managing change, it also points out the importance of understanding the organisational abilities and maturity of the companies that influence the projects. The result points out sets of drivers as well as key factors, related to the organisational abilities, that are effecting the outcome. As future research the model, that is developed to support operations management in their work to implement environmentally driven change, needs to be validated in practise. In particular research on the personal commitment and the collaboration is addressed to be studied in relation to a systematic approach as well as how to balance the priorities during the implementation.

  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Saab Automobile, Sweden, is a relatively small car manufacturer in the prestige car segment. Saab is fully owned by GM since the beginning of 2000. This article is based on a series of interviews. Questions dealt with are: the process of going from a poor financial result to a successful car manufacturer, experiences so far from being a part of the largest company in the world, and implementation of manufacturing strategies. As a step in this process, Saab has developed its own model of lean manufacturing, called the QLE/H-concept, and is now introducing the Andon sys-tem.

  • Manufacturing competition through the Factory-in-a-Box concept
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 18th Annual POM Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today’s business environment is dominated by change and uncertainty, and global competition is diminishing defined markets. Manufacturing success and survival are becoming more difficult to sustain and it is recognized that low cost and high quality alone are not enough to sustain firm’s competitive position in market place. Market uncertainty and frequent introductions of new products has created a growing need for responsive manufacturing systems. Thus, there is a growing demand for well-formulated and implemented manufacturing strategies which provide necessary support for developing and sustaining relevant order-winners and qualifiers, which enable rapid product realization as well as flexibility and reconfigurability within operations. The objective of this paper is to analyze and investigate flexible and reconfigurable production systems from a manufacturing strategy point of view. An ongoing research project in Sweden called Factory-in-a-Box will be presented which is one initiative in this area.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 34th CIRP International Seminar On Manufacturing Systems.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Manufacturing is the part of many companies that involves most of the investments made in the company. Thus it is extremely important to get a sufficient return on these investments. The manufacturing equipment must be utilized in a competitive way. This paper presents the findings from a survey at 145 medium sized companies in Sweden regarding their work with manufacturing strategies. 62 companies answered the form and 52 companies said that they had a manufacturing strategy. Quality, lead-time, and flexibility were considered very important. Delivery precision appears to be even more important than the actual product cost.

    • A study of Ericsson regarding manufacturing and its position in the company. At Ericsson manufacturing has a fairly high rank and is also involved in the product development process at an early stage. The responsibilities for developing manufacturing strategies are delegated to the people at the different plants. Some small differences and competition between the plants are accepted, as long as it does not have a bad influence on the result. Any cultural differences could however be a severe obstacle to realizing the strategies. Further studies could cover small and medium enterprises and their adoption of manufacturing strategies.

  • Sustainability Performance Indicators at Shop Floor Level in Large Manufacturing Companies
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The 24th CIRP Conference on Life Cycle Engineering. - : Elsevier. ; 61, s. 457-462
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates sustainability in the performance measurement systems of Swedish manufacturing companies. It builds on a previous study that documents relatively few direct environmental indicators at shop floor level, which raises questions about possible indirect links between existing indicators and the environment that could be used to improve the environmental aspect of company's sustainability ambitions. A method for identifying and categorizing indirect links to sustainability issues was defined and used. The results suggest that at shop floor level 90% of the indicators have at least an indirect relation to one or more of the sustainability dimensions economy, environment and social, of which 26% are at least indirectly related to the environmental dimension. Despite the many indirect connections, participating companies perceive a need to improve sustainability indicators and some ideas are suggested.

  • Achieving Sustainable Production through Increased Utilization of Production Resources
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 4th Swedish Production Symposium, SPS11, Lund, May 3-5, 2011. ; , s. 398-406
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There seems to be a quite divergent view on sustainable production, mainly based on the perspective applied. From a global perspective, every kind of material consumption and growth is basically unwanted and should be minimized. This reflects in economic sustainability parameters that point towards producing as little as possible and socialparameters pointing at eliminating abuse of human rights etc. On the other hand, international summits on sustainability have stated that it is a human right to have a certain standard of living, which implies increase in production but with less resource consumption. This global perspective is however not very helpful when focusing on more local level, for example Swedish manufacturing industry. To achieve a long-term jobsecurity the manufacturing companies need to be long-term prosperous. Further, to be able to maintain profitability levels, manufacturing companies need to continuouslyincrease productivity. Utilization deals with using production equipment in a cost efficient way and this article will highlight how utilization affects different aspects of sustainable production, the link between utilization and productivity, as well as practical considerations when improving utilization in manufacturing industry.

  • Why is there a mismatch between operation times in the planning systems and the times in reality?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of APMS2010. - 9788864930077
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is often a substantial difference between operation times in reality on the factory shop-floor and in the company’s planning and control system. This difference has several severe consequences for the company’s daily operation in terms of meeting delivery dates and utilizing the available resources in an efficient way, as well as more long term and strategic consequences for the company’s business. Offers to customers and investmentdecisions are based on the operation times in the planning system. There are three principal causes for the gap: Operation times are not set in a correct way from the outset, extra allowance time to handle temporary disturbances tends to become permanent and accumulate, and the fact that operation times once set in the planning system seldom are updated. The root cause for these threedeficiencies is quite likely the management’s unawareness of the situation.

  • Ingår i: Production planning & control (Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0953-7287 .- 1366-5871. ; 15:4, s. 362-372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Much has been written about the conceptual nature of mass customization, and the success of several best business practitioners in the area have been well documented. Most companies, however, are not textbook examples of best practice, but rather are making incremental progress towards mass customization based on a mass-production heritage. This paper presents the findings of a case study that investigated a mass customization initiative at a leading mobile telephone manufacturer in Sweden. The primary objective of the study was to determine the implications of a radically new manufacturing initiative for the company – the production of a customized, entry-level mobile telephone. The differences between the traditional scenario of the mass production of standardized products at the company and that of the new customized production were also sought. The findings of the study, which are presented using the product, process and system perspectives, are aided by a number of customization-related frameworks from the literature. The discussion includes the impact of moving the customization order point downstream in the value chain in terms of increased efficiency and reduced lead times, the reduced requirement for manufacturing flexibility with shifting production system boundaries, and the company's status as a mass customizer.

  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Integrated Supply Management. - 1477-5360 .- 1741-8097. ; 2:1/2, s. 106-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to handle increased competition small and medium sized companies are collaborating in networks, strategic alliance, or partnership etc. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how direction and accountability is handled in network settings. The authors have performed an extensive case study of one collocated network consisting of four independent companies. This networking has enabled the companies to accept larger customer orders than no single company could handle on their own. It has also made them capable of reaching a high level of adaptation to customer demands regarding development, manufacturing, delivery, and support of the complete product. The high level of inter-company integration has created conditions for the network to develop self-organizing characteristics in terms of autopoietic and sympoietic systems. While the first focuses on the relations between companies within the network, the second focuses on relations between the network and the environment. This self-organizing approach is based on strategic conversation between companies at all organizational levels and participation of managers as well as engineers in the design of inter-and intra-organizational structures and processes. In self-organizing systems direction comes from closeness to customers and strategic dialogue between management and engineers and accountability is a consequence of high level of situational visibility and information exchange on all hierarchical levels among companies in this network.

    • A crucial issue in corporate networks is however to identify to what extent different strategic and operational decisions need to be coordinated between the involved companies. In this paper we elaborate on the issue of synchronization of information flow based on interconnectivities between companies in order to coordinate a corporate network by the means of DSM, Dependence Structure Matrix. The results show that DSM can be used to identify interconnectivities among actors in a network and to identify which information that needs to be transferred between companies in the network.

  • Platform thinking in the automotive industry : managing dualism between standardization of components for large scale production and variation for market and customer
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 18th Annual POM Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Automotive industry faces two major problems. One is to develop standard platforms to reach high volumes and low cost. The other is to use platforms for enabling variation of models that suit customer needs, local market demands, and restrictions. Platform thinking embraces several industrial levels, systems integrators, global and local suppliers, and markets. How can the dualism between standardization of components and model variation be managed and which trade-offs need to be made?In this paper we have identified and analyzed different approaches to platform concept from technical as well as organizational, production, and product development perspectives. Platform technology improves flexibility in production and product development. However, when radical changes are made, new design of platform is not easily made, i.e. propagation of requirements and changes in models vs. platforms. When this happens, several production systems have to be entirely rebuilt causing major capital investments, redesign at suppliers etc. Hence, platform technology reduces product development flexibility.

    • In many industrial areas, such as in automotive industry, the development of joint technology platforms is seen as an enabler for improving efficiency, facilitating frequent and rapid new product and technology introductions, as well as transfer of production between units.During the present financial recession especially in the automotive industry, it has become obvious that there might be extensive drawbacks from using integrated platforms for several brands if different companies within large industrial groups are extremely integrated in terms of organization, technology, and know-how. In integrated product structures, major product changes, however, become more difficult and more expensive to carry out. If companies have products based on very different technologies, integration is also not easily achieved and it may be almost impossible to merge several brands into one group and one platform. In this paper we identify implications of widely implemented integrated technology platform thinking in automotive industry.
