    • The primary goal of censuses has always been to collect reliable information on the state’s population and provide a basis for governmental decision-making. This study examines the categories used in the 1930 census and links them to the context in which they were generated. We treat the census as a tool of state power, which can be discerned from the definitions of its categories and the way in which statistics are collected and used. The guiding question of the study was “how does the 1930 census differ from previous censuses and how can these differences and changes be explained?” We find that as in earlier censuses, Statistics Sweden used extracts from the parish books on the individual level to collect information for the 1930 census, but also used diverse supplementary sources including tax registers, income tax returns and language surveys. Thus, unlike in most countries, Sweden did not send out census takers or questionnaires to the population. Many of the new or updated variables we see in the 1930 census such as income, wealth, and number of children born, can be related to the political and social debate concerning the poor working class and the establishment of the welfare state. The inclusion of categories such as ethnicity, religion, and foreign nationality can be seen as part of a normative approach wanting to control, monitor and correct deviant elements of the Swedish population. Sweden has several extraordinary longitudinal population databases built on the country’s excellent parish registers dating back to the 18th century. While the Swedish censuses have rarely been used as sources of data for historical analysis, this work demonstrates that the 1930 census has great potential to support new research.

  • The historiography of Swedish sociology and the bounding of disciplinary identity
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences. - : Wiley. - 0022-5061 .- 1520-6696. ; 42:2, s. 159-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bounding a scientific discipline is a way of regulating its cognitive direction as well as its relations to neighboring disciplines and extra-academic authorities. In this process of identity making, disciplinary history often is a crucial element. In this article, focusing on the historiography of Swedish sociology and the reception of Gustaf Steffen, Sweden's first professional sociologist, it is argued that Steffen's marginalized role in the traditional accounts should be understood not only with reference to his supposed theoretical shortcomings, but also in the historical context of the early postwar reestablishment of sociology as an academic discipline and its prevalent need for a new disciplinary identity, strategically adjusted to the contemporary institutional and political settings.

  • Social science in context : historical, sociological, and global perspectives
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Social Science in Context is one of the first ventures to explore the relationship between social science and society in historical, sociological and global perspective. What impact has the research in these areas had on society? How are research fields established and to what ends? Social Science in Context is a compilation of articles by an international and multidisciplinary group of scholars. The authors analyse the practical making and discursive aspects of social scientific knowledge and examples are drawn from a broad range of disciplines such as sociology, psychology, economics, and gender studies. The overall aim of the book is to encourage a contextual and reflexive understanding of the complex relationship between the social sciences and society. The bonds of the past and today are made up by reciprocity and involve key elements such as gender and power, science and politics, academic boundaries and global power relations. The book should be of interest to researchers, graduate students or anyone else interested in understanding and reflecting upon the uses, roles and functions of social science in today’s globalised world.

  • Ingår i: Cold war social science. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030702465 - 9783030702458 ; , s. 287-313
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Set up in 1946, UNESCO's Department of Social Sciences (DSS) quickly became one of the key promoters of international social science during the early Cold War era. This essay focuses on Alva Myrdal's "social scientific internationalism" in her role as DSS director from 1950 to 1955. By analyzing Myrdal's vision in the context of other contemporary ideas on international social science and with regard to the changing geopolitical landscape, I argue that her social scientific internationalism included a commitment to a modern, empirical, and U.S.-inspired style of social science. However, equally significant, she introduced a power-sensitive analysis of the geography of knowledge, according to which the case of Indian development emerged as an increasingly important exemplar in her call for a decentered international social science.

  • 2011. - 1
  • Ingår i: History of Participatory Media. - New York : Routledge. - 9780415880688 ; , s. 142-157
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, I will discuss reality TV as a participatory medium with a special focus on its social experimental character and put it in a considerably broader historical context. Empirically, the chapter focuses on the Swedish reality TV show Expedition Robinson during the period in which it was broadcast by the domestic public service broadcasting company Sveriges Television (SVT) from 1997 to 2004. The main argument developed in this context is that one of the attractions of Expedition Robinson lay precisely in its character of a social experiment and that this idea, in combination with the realistic and participatory aspects, encouraged a specific way of reading the program that made the viewers identify with the participants and their social interplay within the group. Another aspect of the argument is that the experimental idea was especially important in the way it established a common basic tripartite consensual understanding between the producers, the participants, and the audience. The third and final part of the argument is that the social experimental character of the program makes it plausible to analyze it within a wider historical context of media-based social experiments, which in the end both points to the need for a more historically nuanced view of reality TV as an entirely new media phenomenon and problematizes some of the power-related aspects inherent in Expedition Robinson and other reality TV formats.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Lychnos. - Göteborg. - 0076-1648. ; , s. 235-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early post-World War II international social science was marked by paradoxical tendencies. On the one hand it experienced a rapid expansion underblown by a new optimistic internationalism. On the other hand, many of the initiatives taken were increasingly affected by emerging Cold War tensions. Embedded in these cross-currents of internationalism and geopolitics, UNESCO’s Department of Social Sciences (SSD) played a key role. The aim of this article is to analyze Alva Myrdal’s social scientific internationalism during her term as Director of UNESCO’s SSD, 1950–1955, in the context of other contemporary ideas on international social science. Empirically centred around fifteen key texts by Myrdal, the article argues: first, that a relatively distinct core in Myrdal’s view on international social science can be discerned; second, that her social scientific internationalism by large were in line with the previous and dominating views within UNESCO’s SSD, but also that Myrdal introduced and advocated a more interdisciplinary, applied and polycentric approach to international social science; third, that some discrete but important displacements can be discerned – in spite of the short period – over time.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a new coordinating organization in the rapidly expanding international field of post-World War II social science, UNESCO’s Department of Social Sciences (SSD), set up in 1946, played a central role. This article explores the formation of the SSD during its first decade with a special focus on its organizational aspects. By conceptualizing the SSD as an “international boundary organization”, the article analyzes the organizational structuration of agency spaces on different levels – within SSD, in relation to UNESCO and to the UN system at large – as well as over time. As a result, the article discerns four phases, distinguished by organizational changes, under which the SSD was successively transformed from a relatively independent transnational organization, which shared the utopian vision of one-worldism, to an intergovernmental organization considerably more vulnerable to external geopolitical pressures.

  • Jane Addams and the contemporary Swedish social entrepreneurial scene : reflections on the gendered making of social knowledge
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Jane Addams' Sociology and the Spirit of Social Entrepreneurship. - Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. - 9789151303369 ; , s. 131-143
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The basic research question of this chapter is: Were there any equivalents to Jane Addams as a social entrepreneur in contemporary Sweden? To answer that question the chapter is structured in three parts. The first part is concerned with the concept of "social entrepreneurship", the second with Jane Addams as a social entrepreneur and the third with the contemporary Swedish social entrepreneurial scene. In the last respect, Ellen Key, Anna Bugge Wicksell and Emilia Broomé are empirically highlighted and compared with Jane Addams as social entrepreneurs. By historically situating Key, Wicksell and Broomé as well as Addams within the international social reform movement, the chapter argues that the peace movement and the rise of the social sciences were partly interconnected, and that Jane Addams helps us to reveal these partly gendered patterns in the making of social knowledge.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter draws on and introduces some of the more influential theoretical knowledge boundary concepts that have been developed in the intersecting areas of the sociology of knowledge, science and technology studies, and the history of science over previous decades. It is argued that together these concepts provide a rich analytical toolbox for a deepened understanding of how knowledge boundaries have, in different ways, shaped and reshaped the history of sociology. In the first part of the chapter, five of these concepts – boundary-work, boundary object, boundary organization, trading zone, and co-production – are introduced and discussed, while the second part provides empirical examples of their application in the form of four short, chronologically ordered, episodes from the history of sociology. Although the boundary concepts differ in important respects, they also complement each other. The first two episodes show how knowledge boundaries have determined not only separation and exclusion, but also communication and inclusion in the early history of sociology. The third episode shows how the concepts can be combined to highlight various aspects and analytical levels of one and the same phenomenon, whereas the fourth and final episode shows how the disciplinary history of sociology itself has been used as a powerful tool for exclusion. These insights call for a historiographically reflexive approach to the history of sociology and its boundaries.

    • The chapter discusses the role of the public and its gendered aspects. Empirically, the case-study focuses on the very first public social science lectures at Stockholm University College in 1888. By analysing this seemingly peripheral event, it is argued, it is necessary to situate the event historically in its broader social, cultural, and political context, and apply a more circular perspective to the distribution of agency, if we are to understand the full complexity of the co-production of early academic social science and its gendered publics during this formative phase.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Academics as public intellectuals. - Newcastle, UK : Cambridge Scholars Publishing. - 9781847184764 ; , s. 173-195
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Per Wisselgren's chapter on academics as public intellectuals, is concerned with the role of extra-academic social research and the relationship between social science and social policy in the Swedish interwar period. It focuses on the intersection between, on the one hand, the long domestic tradition of governmental commissions and, on the other, Gunnar and Alva Myrdal’s trajectories as public intellectuals. Special attention is paid to the so-called Population Commission (1935-38), which was one of the Alva and Gunnar Myrdal’s earliest and most important works but also one of the largest and most influential commissions in the history of Swedish social policy. By analyzing the Population Commission in terms of a historically situated “trading zone” or “boundary organization”, i.e. a place where different knowledge cultures have met and spheres of action for social expertise have been negotiated and stabilized, Wisselgren argues that the Myrdals both conceptualized and re-formulated the science-policy boundary in a new way on the discursive level and practically and institutionally widened the sphere of action for social researchers.

  • Samhällets kartläggare : Lorénska stiftelsen, den sociala frågan och samhällsvetenskapens formering i Sverige 1830-1920
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using the Lorén Foundation (Lorénska stiftelsen) as a concrete empirical point of departure, the aim of this dissertation is to study the formation of a Swedish social science discourse in the historical context of the lengthy and broad-ranging discussions summarized in the formula "the social question". Established in 1885, the explicit aim of the Lorén Foundation was to promote the rise of Swedish social science and to contribute to the solution of the social question. Composing an heuristic case, the historical reconstruction of the Lorén Foundation and its activities thus comprise the basic thesis - that modern social science should be understood as an "answer" to the "social question" - while providing it with empirical substance and historical content.Emphasizing the contextual and conceptual aspects of the history of social knowledge, the "social question", the Lorén Foundation, and the institutionalization of social science are regarded as different components in an historical discourse centred around the social sphere as it took shape from the 1830s and onwards. In this broad, multifarious definition and articulation process, social science is understood not as a unique "answer", but rather as one attempt alongside others to regulate the social sphere. Focusing on the intimate interrelations between social science practice and realist and naturalist authors, as well as contemporary social reform efforts, the dissertation also emphasizes the historically changing boundaries of social knowledge and its inherent political, gendered and professional dimensions. The final part of the study discusses the role of social science in the Swedish welfare state in more general terms, employing a comparative, international perspective, and the historiographical construction of disciplinary identities characteristic of academic sociology after World War II.

    • The chapter focuses on three social science couples in Sweden at the turn of the twentieth century, of which the men are all well-known as pioneers of academic economics and sociology: Knut Wicksell, Gustaf Steffen, and Gustav Cassel. Far less known in the history of the social sciences are their wives: Anna Wicksell, Oscara Steffen, and Johanna Cassel. Hence, the basic questions posed in this context are if and, if so, how they contributed to their husbands’ careers? By doing so, the essay emphasizes, on the one hand, the ldquo;private, rdquo; gender-relational and routinized everyday practices of scientific knowledge production and, on the other hand, its wider historical, social and cultural contexts. The main argument developed is that such a perspective highlights the cognitive role of the contemporary social reform movement as an arena, which offered collaborative spaces for male as well as female initiatives important to the academization of social science. But it is also shown that the movement at the same time was a social and cultural context where traditional gender values and practices were both reproduced and reconstructed.

  • The social scientific gaze : the social question and the rise of academic social science in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The social sciences have, ever since they were first established as academic disciplines, played a foundational role in most spheres of modern society - in policy-making, education, the media and public debate - and hence also, indirectly, for our self-understanding as social beings. The Social Scientific Gaze examines the discursive formation of academic social science in the historical context of the 'social question', that is, the protracted and wide-ranging discussions on the social problems of modernity that were being debated with increased intensity during the nineteenth century. Empirically, the study focuses on the Lorén Foundation, a combined private funding agency and early research institute, which was set up in 1885 to promote the rise of Swedish social science and to investigate the social question. Comprising an heuristic case, the close analysis of the Foundation makes it possible not only to reconstruct its basic ideas and practices, but also to situate its activities in broader historical and sociological context. The Social Scientific Gaze argues that the rise of Swedish social science may be seen not only as an 'answer' to the social 'question', but also as one attempt alongside others - including contemporary social literature, the philantropic reform movement, and the introduction of modern social policy - to conceptualize, mobilize and regulate the social sphere. In this process it is furthermore shown how an ambigious yet distinct 'social scientific gaze' was discursively articulated.
