  • Polarisation Development at the European Spallation Source
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EPJ Web of Conferences. - 2100-014X. ; 286, s. 03004-03004
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To meet the ever-increasing user demand, eleven of the fifteen European Spallation Source (ESS) instruments under construction aim to offer polarised neutrons for user experiments. They include an imaging instrument, a SANS instruments, two reflectometers, three diffractometers, and four spectrometers. In conjunction with in-kind contributions and instrumentation grants, the ESS Polarisation Project will support the incorporation of polarisation analysis on eight of the eleven instruments. The project aims to deliver polarised neutrons for first-science experiments as instruments enter operation. Different polariser and polarisation analyser techniques will be available to accommodate the specifics of experiments on a given instrument. Polarised 3He neutron spin filter using either Metastable Optical Pumping (MEOP) or Spin-Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) techniques will provide shared-use equipment among many instruments, with SEOP’s main application being in situ beam-polarisation. Several instruments will also use polarising-supermirror devices. To provide wide-bandwidth spin-flipping capability to the time-of-flight instruments, Adiabatic Fast Passage (AFP) neutron spin flippers, also known as gradient-field radiofrequency spin flippers will be the main method of choice. Devices based on the same AFP principle will also be used to flip 3He nuclear spins. We are constructing our first 3He polariser setup, including field coils to produce highly uniform magnetic field. Monte Carlo simulations are being done for the supermirror polarisers. To ensure science-focused development, we are working with university partners in doing scientific experiments with polarised neutrons. These are some of the activities developing polarisation analysis for ESS instruments in our project.

  • In-situ neutron imaging of delayed hydrogen cracking in highstrength steel - experiments and modeling
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Hydrogen delayed fracture, also known as hydrogen-induced cracking, is a type of brittle fracture that occurs due to the slow diffusion and accumulation of hydrogen atoms, leading todecreased ductility and eventual cracking under constant load. This paper presents an in-situobservation, using neutron imaging, of delayed crack propagation caused by hydrogen embrittlement in a high strength martensitic steel specimen. The experiments involved mechanicalloading of a single-edge-notch bend specimen while submerged in an electrolyte solution (H2O+ 3.5% NaCl) under cathodic polarization to facilitate hydrogen ingress. Neutron transmission images were obtained in-situ and used to monitor intermittent crack propagation wasrecorded over a period of 12 hours. The stress state at each crack configuration was extracted from a three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element simulation, which was tailoredto match the quantitative information acquired from the neutron radiographs of the fractureprocess. To gain insight into the evolution of hydrogen concentration with crack propagation,a modeling scheme for stress-assisted hydrogen diffusion was employed. These simulationsprovided qualitative information on the relation between intermittent crack propagation andthe subsequent supply of hydrogen to the crack tip. Finally, a failure locus was constructedbased on the calculated hydrogen concentration levels and the experimentally determinedcrack growth resistance.

  • Wavelength frame multiplication for reflectometry at long-pulse neutron sources
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 91:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Spallation Source (ESS), which is under construction in Lund (Sweden), will be the next leading neutron facility with an unprecedented brilliance and novel long-pulse time structure. A long-pulse source not only provides a high time-average flux but also opens the possibility to tune the resolution by using pulse shaping choppers. Thus, an instrument can readily be operated in either a high flux or a high resolution mode. Several of the shorter instruments at the ESS will employ Wavelength Frame Multiplication (WFM) in order to enable a sufficient resolution while offering a continuous and broad wavelength range. A test beamline was operated until the end of 2019 at the research reactor in Berlin to test components and methods, including WFM, in order to prepare the new facility for the operation of neutron instruments and successful first science. We herein demonstrate the implementation of WFM for reflectometry. By selecting a short pulse mode under the same geometrical configuration, we compare and discuss the results for two reference samples. The reported experiments not only serve to prove the reliability of the WFM approach but also, for the first time, demonstrate the full instrument control, data acquisition and data reduction chain that will be implemented at the ESS.

  • Residual Lattice Strain and Phase Distribution in Ti-6Al-4V Produced by Electron Beam Melting
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI. - 1996-1944. ; 12:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Residual stress/strain and microstructure used in additively manufactured material are strongly dependent on process parameter combination. With the aim to better understand and correlate process parameters used in electron beam melting (EBM) of Ti-6Al-4V with resulting phase distributions and residual stress/strains, extensive experimental work has been performed. A large number of polycrystalline Ti-6Al-4V specimens were produced with different optimized EBM process parameter combinations. These specimens were post-sequentially studied by using high-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction. In addition, visible light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) studies were performed and linked to the other findings. Results show that the influence of scan speed and offset focus on resulting residual strain in a fully dense sample was not significant. In contrast to some previous literature, a uniform α- and β-Ti phase distribution was found in all investigated specimens. Furthermore, no strong strain variations along the build direction with respect to the deposition were found. The magnitude of strain in α and β phase show some variations both in the build plane and along the build direction, which seemed to correlate with the size of the primary β grains. However, no relation was found between measured residual strains in α and β phase. Large primary β grains and texture appear to have a strong effect on X-ray based stress results with relatively small beam size, therefore it is suggested to use a large beam for representative bulk measurements and also to consider the prior β grain size in experimental planning, as well as for mathematical modelling.

  • The scale of a martian hydrothermal system explored using combined neutron and x-ray tomography
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 8:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nakhlite meteorites are igneous rocks from Mars that were aqueously altered ~630 million years ago. Hydrothermal systems on Earth are known to provide microhabitats; knowledge of the extent and duration of these systems is crucial to establish whether they could sustain life elsewhere in the Solar System. Here, we explore the three-dimensional distribution of hydrous phases within the Miller Range 03346 nakhlite meteorite using nondestructive neutron and x-ray tomography to determine whether alteration is interconnected and pervasive. The results reveal discrete clusters of hydrous phases within and surrounding olivine grains, with limited interconnectivity between clusters. This implies that the fluid was localized and originated from the melting of local subsurface ice following an impact event. Consequently, the duration of the hydrous alteration was likely short, meaning that the martian crust sampled by the nakhlites could not have provided habitable environments that could harbor any life on Mars during the Amazonian.

  • On the relationship between laser scan strategy, texture variations and hidden nucleation sites for failure in laser powder-bed fusion
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materialia. - : Elsevier. - 2589-1529. ; 26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While laser powder-bed fusion has overcome some of the design constraints of conventional manufacturing meth-ods, it requires careful selection of process parameters and scan strategies to obtain favorable properties. Here we show that even simple scan strategies, complex ones being inevitable when printing intricate designs, can inadvertently produce local alterations of the microstructure and preferential grain orientation over small areas - which easily remain unnoticed across the macroscale. We describe how a combined usage of neutron imaging and electron backscatter diffraction can reveal these localized variations and explain their origin within cm-sized parts. We explain the observed contrast variations by linking the neutron images to simulated data, pole figures and EBSD, providing an invaluable reference for future studies and showing that presumably minor changes of the scan strategy can have detrimental effects on the mechanical properties. In-situ tensile tests reveal that fracture occurs in a region that was re-melted during the building process.

  • Torsion of a rectangular bar : Complex phase distribution in 304L steel revealed by neutron tomography
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197. ; 222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metastable austenitic stainless steel (304L) samples with a rectangular cross-section were plastically deformed in torsion during which they experienced multiaxial stresses that led to a complex martensitic phase distribution owing to the transformation induced plasticity effect. A three-dimensional character-ization of the phase distributions in these cm-sized samples was carried out by wavelength-selective neutron tomography. It was found that quantitatively correct results are obtained as long as the samples do not exhibit any considerable preferential grain orientation. Optical microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and finite element modeling were used to verify and explain the results obtained by neutron tomography. Altogether, neutron tomography was shown to extend the range of microstructure charac-terization methods towards the meso-and macroscale.

  • A novel testing system for hydromechanical investigation of rock materials in neutron and X-ray imaging instruments
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences. - 1365-1609. ; 174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces a novel testing system for investigating rock hydromechanical behavior with neutron and X-ray imaging techniques. The system comprises four subsystems: an axial compression system, a confining pressure system, a fluid flow system, and a triaxial cell. In order to enable imaging with both modalities to track fluid flow and deformation in situ and 3D, the cell was designed to have sufficient transparency to X-rays and neutrons. The system's capabilities are demonstrated by showing neutron and X-ray tomography data of Idaho Gray sandstone samples during in situ coupled flow-triaxial tests. Quasi-single-phase flow analysis was enabled by directly visualizing the fluid front advance via neutron tomography by exchanging light water (H2O) and heavy water (D2O). Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) could be performed on both the X-ray and neutron tomography images to quantify the mechanical strain field evolution in the samples, which can be compared to the evolution of the fluid flow fields. In addition, the cell and a sample of Idaho Gray sandstone were imaged in a laboratory X-ray tomography machine, generating 3D reconstructed volumes with grain-scale resolution. Improvements are proposed for future experiments to obtain grain-scale resolution images during coupled flow-triaxial tests using neutron and X-ray beams simultaneously and conducting in situ experiments on laboratory tomographs.
