    • In this paper, we propose a decision procedure for a class of string-manipulating programs which includes not only a wide range of string operations such as concatenation, replaceAll, reverse, and finite transducers, but also those involving the integer data-type such as length, indexof, and substring. To the best of our knowledge, this represents one of the most expressive string constraint languages that is currently known to be decidable. Our decision procedure is based on a variant of cost register automata. We implement the decision procedure, giving rise to a new solver OSTRICH+. We evaluate the performance of OSTRICH+ on a wide range of existing and new benchmarks. The experimental results show that OSTRICH+ is the first string decision procedure capable of tackling finite transducers and integer constraints, whilst its overall performance is comparable with the state-of-the-art string constraint solvers.

    • Background/Aims: The incidence of lectin allergic disease is increasing in recent decades, and definitive treatment is still lacking. Identification of B and T-cell epitopes of allergen will be useful in understanding the allergen antibody responses as well as aiding in the development of new diagnostics and therapy regimens for lectin poisoning. In the current study, we mainly addressed these questions. Methods: Three-dimensional structure of the lectin from black turtle bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was modeled using the structural template of Phytohemagglutinin from P. vulgaris (PHA-E, PDB ID: 3wcs.1.A) with high identity. The B and T-cell epitopes were screened and identified by immunoinformatics and subsequently validated by ELISA, lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine profile analyses. Results: Seven potential B-cell epitopes (B1 to B7) were identified by sequence and structure based methods, while three T-cell epitopes (T1 to T3) were identified by the predictions of binding score and inhibitory concentration. The epitope peptides were synthesized. Significant IgE binding capability was found in B-cell epitopes (B2, B5, B6 and B7) and T2 (a cryptic B-cell epitope). T1 and T2 induced significant lymphoproliferation, and the release of IL-4 and IL-5 cytokine confirmed the validity of T-cell epitope prediction. Abundant hydrophobic amino acids were found in B-cell epitope and T-cell epitope regions by amino acid analysis. Positively charged amino acids, such as His residue, might be more favored for B-cell epitope. Conclusion: The present approach can be applied for the identification of epitopes in novel allergen proteins and thus for designing diagnostics and therapies in lectin allergy.

  • Structure dependent quantum confinement effect in hydrogen-terminated nanodiamond clusters

    • Size-dependent quantum confinement effect on electronic structure of hydrogen-terminated carbon nanodiamond (ND) cluster has been investigated at the hybrid density functional theory level. Large scale all-electron calculations have been carried out for ND clusters of 0.76 nm (29 carbons) to 7.3 nm (20 959 carbons) in diameter. It is demonstrated that the quantum confinement effect in these clusters shows strong structural dependence. An important structural factor, describing the ratio between the number of atoms within the inner core and outer shell of the cluster, is identified which dictates the size-dependent behavior of the electronic states. For ND clusters with diameter smaller than 1.5 nm, the core-shell ratio changes fast with the increase in cluster size, and the evolution of electronic properties does not follow conventional quantum confinement models. For ND clusters exceeding the threshold of 1.5 nm in diameter, the change in the core-shell ratio saturates and quantum confinement effect becomes visible. Electronic states within the inner core and surface show different size dependence, but a general formula is proposed and describes their structure dependent quantum confinement effects. This formula provides useful insights into quantum confinement behavior in ND clusters, and thereby leads to important physical property information. The calculated electron effective masses for core and surface states of ND clusters are in very good agreement with the experiments.

  • Performance analysis of local caching replacement policies for internet video streaming services

    • In this work, the performance of 5 representative caching replacement policies was investigated and compared for caching Internet video-on-demand (VoD) in local access networks. Two measured traces of end-user requests were used in the analyses for two typical VoD services: TV-on-demand and user generated content represented by YouTube. The studied policies range from simple least recently used (LRU) and least frequently used (LFU) algorithms to more advanced ones denoted as LFU-dynamic lifespan (LFU-DL), Adaptive replacement cache (ARC) and Greedy-dual size frequency (GDSF). Our results show that the ARC policy always outperforms the other policies due to its adaptive nature and its ability to track changes in the traffic patterns. On the other hand, the simple LRU policy can also achieve a caching performance which is comparable to that of the more advanced ARC policy especially for the TV-on-demand service when the potential caching gain is high. On the contrary, the simple LFU policy always shows the poorest performance.However, by applying a proper lifespan supplement under the LFU-DL policy, the caching performance can be effectively enhanced to the level achievable using ARC and LRU policies. Moreover, the GDSF policy does not outperform simple LRU or LFU-DL, especially for YouTube video clips when the potential caching gain is relatively low. The advantage of GDSF manifested in our analysis is, however, its outstanding cache space usage efficiency among the five studied caching algorithms.

    • As a conceptually new class of two-dimensional (2D) materials, the ultrathin nanosheets as inorganic graphene analogues (IGAs) play an increasingly vital role in the new-generation electronics. However, the relatively low electrical conductivity of inorganic ultrathin nanosheets in current stage significantly hampered their conducting electrode applications in constructing nanodevices. We developed the unprecedentedly high electrical conductivity in inorganic ultrathin nanosheets. The hydric titanium disulfide (HTS) ultrathin nanosheets, as a new IGAs, exhibit the exclusively high electrical conductivity of 6.76 x 10(4) S/m at room temperature, which is superior to indium tin oxide (1.9 x 10(4) S/m), recording the best value in the solution assembled 2D thin films of both graphene (5.5 x 10(4) S/m) and inorganic graphene analogues (5.0 x 10(2) S/m). The modified hydrogen on S-Ti-S layers contributes additional electrons to the TiS2 layered frameworks, rendering the controllable electrical conductivity as well as the electron concentrations. Together with synergic advantages of the excellent mechanical flexibility, high stability, and stamp-transferrable properties, the HTS thin films show promising capability for being the next generation conducting electrode material in the nanodevice fields.

    • The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution of single crystals with low La doping, LaxY1-xVO3 (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2), has been studied using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, specific heat, mag-netization, and Raman-scattering techniques. It is found that substituting Y3+ by La3+ increases the de-generacy of the yz/zx orbitals and decreases the Jahn-Teller distortion. These weakens the G-type (antiphase ordering along the c axis) orbital ordering phase. Meanwhile, the substituting decreases the magnetism entropy, indicating the shrinking of the t2g and eg orbital hybridization, eventually destabilizing the C-type (in-phase ordering along the c axis) antiferromagnetic ordering phase. In addition, the mechanism for the shrinking of the diamagnetism with increasing x is analyzed. It may attribute to the competition between the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the single-ion anisotropy.

    • Flexible electronics has been an intensively pursued hot topic in recent years, and flexible nonvolatile memory devices (NVMs) are also an important concept in modern electronics due to the advantages of retaining stored information even when not powered, with great portability and high deformability. In this study, we report that delta-K0.5V2O5 bronze with sandwiched potassium atoms in the V-O framework has been found to be a new promising material platform for intriguing nonvolatile memory applications. The bronze structure with the sandwiched alkali metal atoms between the two V2O5 layers ensures the promising NVM effect by changing the electronic properties under an applied electric field. The delta-K0.5V2O5 bronze entangled superlong nanobelt networks, which are established via the "solid-solution-solid" (SSS) mechanism and a hydrogen-bond-assisted entangling process, bring the synergic advantages of excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Spin polarized GGA+U density functional theory calculations elucidate well the nature of bronze-based NVM, in which the overall effect of applying an electric field is to reduce the energy gap, no matter what the direction of the electric field is; the effects of electric field and ion shift would follow the same trend, the non-linear band gap changes would lead to resistance changes of this material. The NVMs based on the entangled superlong nanobelt membrane possess the advantages of not only low cost and very simple device structure, but also a reversible and noticeable nonlinear hysteresis, low consumption, stable WRER cycles, and a long retention time over 1000 s, showing promise for next-generation flexible NVMs.

  • Biocatalytic Access to 1,4-Diazepanes via Imine Reductase-Catalyzed Intramolecular Asymmetric Reductive Amination

    • An enzymatic intramolecular asymmetric reductive amination has been developed for the synthesis of chiral 1,4-diazepanes. Several enantiocomplementary IREDs were identified for the synthesis of (R)- and (S)-5-chloro-2-(5-methyl-1,4-diazepan-1-yl)benzo[d]oxazole with high enan- tioselectivity. The catalytic efficiency of (R)-selective IRED from Leishmania major (IR1) and (S)-selective IRED from Micromonospora echinaurantiaca IR25) was 0.027 and 0.962 s(-1) mM(-1), respectively. To further improve the catalytic efficiency of IR1, its double mutant Y194F/D232H was identified by saturation mutagenesis and iterative combinatorial mutagenesis, which exhibited 61-fold in the catalytic efficiency relative to that of wild-type enzyme. The density functional calculations and molecular dynamics simulations provided some insights into the molecular basis for the improved activity of mutant Y194F/D232H. Furthermore, Y194F/D232H and IR25 were applied to access a range of different substituted 1,4-diazepanes with high enantiomeric excess (from 93 to >99%). This study offers an effective method for construction of chiral 1,4-diazepanes of pharmaceutical importance via imine reductase-catalyzed intramolecular reductive amination of the corresponding aminoketones.

    • The mechanism for electron photoemission of [121]tetramantane and its functionalized compound [121]tetramantane-6-thiol adsorbed on different noble metal surfaces has been investigated by density functional theory calculations. It is found that good chemical bonding between molecules and metal surfaces is a helpful but not a necessary condition for electron photoemission. A lower work function and weaker hybridization between the molecule and the metal could lead to much more efficient electron photoemission. It is observed that, neglecting final state effect, a simple ground state picture cannot result in negative electron affinity for the systems under investigation. Calculations have shown that by exciting an electron in the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, the highest singly occupied molecular orbital of the molecule can be shifted above the vacuum level, resulting in negative electron affinity and emission of the accumulated electrons.
