  • InAs/GaSb core-shell nanowires grown on Si substrates by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 27:27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the growth of InAs/GaSb core-shell heterostructure nanowires with smooth sidewalls on Si substrates using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition with no assistance from foreign catalysts. Sb adatoms were observed to strongly influence the morphology of the GaSb shell. In particular, Ga droplets form on the nanowire tips when a relatively low TMSb flow rate is used, whereas the droplets are missing and the radial growth of the GaSb is enhanced due to a reduction in the diffusion length of the Ga adatoms when the TMSb flow rate is increased. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed that the GaSb shell coherently grew on the InAs core. The results obtained here show that the InAs/GaSb core-shell nanowires grown using the Si platform have strong potential in the fabrication of future nanometer-scale devices and in the study of fundamental quantum physics.

  • Reducing the muscle activity of walking using a portable hip exoskeleton based on human-in-the-loop optimization
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-4185. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Human-in-the-loop optimization has made great progress to improve the performance of wearable robotic devices and become an effective customized assistance strategy. However, a lengthy period (several hours) of continuous walking for iterative optimization for each individual makes it less practical, especially for disabled people, who may not endure this process. Methods: In this paper, we provide a muscle-activity-based human-in-the-loop optimization strategy that can reduce the time spent on collecting biosignals during each iteration from around 120 s to 25 s. Both Bayesian and Covariance Matrix Adaptive Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) optimization algorithms were adopted on a portable hip exoskeleton to generate optimal assist torque patterns, optimizing rectus femoris muscle activity. Four volunteers were recruited for exoskeleton-assisted walking trials. Results and Discussion:As a result, using human-in-the-loop optimization led to muscle activity reduction of 33.56% and 41.81% at most when compared to walking without and with the hip exoskeleton, respectively. Furthermore, the results of human-in-the-loop optimization indicate that three out of four participants achieved superior outcomes compared to the predefined assistance patterns. Interestingly, during the optimization stage, the order of the two typical optimizers, i.e., Bayesian and CMA-ES, did not affect the optimization results. The results of the experiment have confirmed that the assistance pattern generated by muscle-activity-based human-in-the-loop strategy is superior to predefined assistance patterns, and this strategy can be achieved more rapidly than the one based on metabolic cost.

  • Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980: A pooled analysis of 751 population-based studies with 4.4 million participants
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0140-6736 .- 1474-547X. ; 387:10027, s. 1513-1530
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: One of the global targets for non-communicable diseases is to halt, by 2025, the rise in the age standardised adult prevalence of diabetes at its 2010 levels. We aimed to estimate worldwide trends in diabetes, how likely it is for countries to achieve the global target, and how changes in prevalence, together with population growth and ageing, are aff ecting the number of adults with diabetes. Methods: We pooled data from population-based studies that had collected data on diabetes through measurement of its biomarkers. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in diabetes prevalence-defined as fasting plasma glucose of 7.0 mmol/L or higher, or history of diagnosis with diabetes, or use of insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs-in 200 countries and territories in 21 regions, by sex and from 1980 to 2014. We also calculated the posterior probability of meeting the global diabetes target if post-2000 trends continue.Findings: We used data from 751 studies including 4372000 adults from 146 of the 200 countries we make estimates for. Global age-standardised diabetes prevalence increased from 4.3% (95% credible interval 2.4-17.0) in 1980 to 9.0% (7.2-11.1) in 2014 in men, and from 5.0% (2.9-7.9) to 7.9% (6.4-9.7) in women. The number of adults with diabetes in the world increased from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 (28.5% due to the rise in prevalence, 39.7% due to population growth and ageing, and 31.8% due to interaction of these two factors). Age-standardised adult diabetes prevalence in 2014 was lowest in northwestern Europe, and highest in Polynesia and Micronesia, at nearly 25%, followed by Melanesia and the Middle East and north Africa. Between 1980 and 2014 there was little change in age-standardised diabetes prevalence in adult women in continental western Europe, although crude prevalence rose because of ageing of the population. By contrast, age-standardised adult prevalence rose by 15 percentage points in men and women in Polynesia and Micronesia. In 2014, American Samoa had the highest national prevalence of diabetes (>30% in both sexes), with age-standardised adult prevalence also higher than 25% in some other islands in Polynesia and Micronesia. If post-2000 trends continue, the probability of meeting the global target of halting the rise in the prevalence of diabetes by 2025 at the 2010 level worldwide is lower than 1% for men and is 1% for women. Only nine countries for men and 29 countries for women, mostly in western Europe, have a 50% or higher probability of meeting the global target.Interpretation: Since 1980, age-standardised diabetes prevalence in adults has increased, or at best remained unchanged, in every country. Together with population growth and ageing, this rise has led to a near quadrupling of the number of adults with diabetes worldwide. The burden of diabetes, both in terms of prevalence and number of adults aff ected, has increased faster in low-income and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.522.7) and 16.5 cm (13.319.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Effects of diabetes definition on global surveillance of diabetes prevalence and diagnosis: a pooled analysis of 96 population-based studies with 331288 participants
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. - 2213-8595 .- 2213-8587. ; 3:8, s. 624-637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Diabetes has been defined on the basis of different biomarkers, including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h plasma glucose in an oral glucose tolerance test (2hOGTT), and HbA(1c). We assessed the effect of different diagnostic definitions on both the population prevalence of diabetes and the classification of previously undiagnosed individuals as having diabetes versus not having diabetes in a pooled analysis of data from population-based health examination surveys in different regions. Methods We used data from 96 population-based health examination surveys that had measured at least two of the biomarkers used for defining diabetes. Diabetes was defined using HbA(1c) (HbA(1c) >= 6 . 5% or history of diabetes diagnosis or using insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs) compared with either FPG only or FPG-or-2hOGTT definitions (FPG >= 7 . 0 mmol/L or 2hOGTT >= 11 . 1 mmol/L or history of diabetes or using insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs). We calculated diabetes prevalence, taking into account complex survey design and survey sample weights. We compared the prevalences of diabetes using different definitions graphically and by regression analyses. We calculated sensitivity and specificity of diabetes diagnosis based on HbA1c compared with diagnosis based on glucose among previously undiagnosed individuals (ie, excluding those with history of diabetes or using insulin or oral hypoglycaemic drugs). We calculated sensitivity and specificity in each survey, and then pooled results using a random-effects model. We assessed the sources of heterogeneity of sensitivity by meta-regressions for study characteristics selected a priori. Findings Population prevalence of diabetes based on FPG- or-2hOGTT was correlated with prevalence based on FPG alone (r= 0 . 98), but was higher by 2-6 percentage points at different prevalence levels. Prevalence based on HbA(1c) was lower than prevalence based on FPG in 42 . 8% of age-sex-survey groups and higher in another 41 . 6%; in the other 15 . 6%, the two definitions provided similar prevalence estimates. The variation across studies in the relation between glucose-based and HbA(1c)-based prevalences was partly related to participants' age, followed by natural logarithm of per person gross domestic product, the year of survey, mean BMI, and whether the survey population was national, subnational, or from specific communities. Diabetes defined as HbA(1c) 6 . 5% or more had a pooled sensitivity of 52 . 8% (95% CI 51 . 3-54 . 3%) and a pooled specificity of 99 . 74% (99 . 71-99 . 78%) compared with FPG 7 . 0 mmol/L or more for diagnosing previously undiagnosed participants; sensitivity compared with diabetes defined based on FPG-or-2hOGTT was 30 . 5% (28 . 7-32 . 3%). None of the preselected study-level characteristics explained the heterogeneity in the sensitivity of HbA(1c) versus FPG. Interpretation Different biomarkers and definitions for diabetes can provide different estimates of population prevalence of diabetes, and differentially identify people without previous diagnosis as having diabetes. Using an HbA(1c)-based definition alone in health surveys will not identify a substantial proportion of previously undiagnosed people who would be considered as having diabetes using a glucose-based test.

  • Genetic variants and Expression of Cytochrome p450 Oxidoreductase Predict Postoperative Survival in Patients with Hepatitis B Virus-Related Hepatocellular Carcinoma
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cancer. - : IVYSPRING INT PUBL. - 1837-9664. ; 10:6, s. 1453-1465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our current study investigates the prognostic values of genetic variants and mRNA expression of cytochrome p450 oxidoreductase (POR) in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A total of 19 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the exons of POR were genotyped using Sanger sequencing from 476 HBV-related HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy between 2003 and 2013. The mRNA expression of POR in 212 patients with HBV-related HCC was obtained from GSE14520 dataset. Survival analysis was performed to investigate the association of POR variants and mRNA expression with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Nomograms were used to predict the prognosis of HBV-related HCC patients. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was used to investigate the mechanism of POR in HBV-related HCC prognosis. The polymorphism POR-rs1057868 was significantly associated with HBV-related HCC OS (CT/TT vs. CC, hazard ratio [HR] = 0.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.54, 0.88], P = 0.003), but not significantly associated with RFS (CT/TT vs. CC, P = 0.378). POR mRNA expression was also significantly associated with HBV-related HCC OS (high vs. low, HR = 0.61, 95% CI = [0.38, 0.97], P= 0.036), but not significantly associated with the RFS (high vs. low, P = 0.201). Two nomograms were developed to predict the HBV-related HCC OS. Furthermore, GSEA suggests that multiple gene sets were significantly enriched in liver cancer survival and recurrence, as well as POR-related target therapy in the liver. In conclusion, our study suggests that POR-rs1057868 and mRNA expression may serve as a potential postoperative prognosis biomarker in HBV-related HCC.

  • Comprehensive investigation of key biomarkers and pathways in hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cancer. - : IVYSPRING INT PUBL. - 1837-9664. ; 10:23, s. 5689-5704
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Our study is aim to explore potential key biomarkers and pathways in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using genome-wide expression profile dataset and methods. Methods: Dataset from the GSE14520 is used as the training cohort and The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset as the validation cohort. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) screening were performed by the limma package. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), gene ontology, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, and risk score model were used for pathway and genes identification. Results: GSEA revealed that several pathways and biological processes are associated with hepatocarcinogenesis, such as the cell cycle, DNA repair, and p53 pathway. A total of 160 DEGs were identified. The enriched functions and pathways of the DEGs included toxic substance decomposition and metabolism processes, and the P450 and p53 pathways. Eleven of the DEGs were identified as hub DEGs in the WGCNA. In survival analysis of hub DEGs, high expression of PRC1 and TOP2A were significantly associated with poor clinical outcome of HBV-related HCC, and shown a good performance in HBV-related HCC diagnosis. The prognostic signature consisting of PRC1 and TOP2A also doing well in the prediction of HBV-related HCC prognosis. The diagnostic and prognostic values of PRC1 and TOP2A was confirmed in TCGA HCC patients. Conclusions: Key biomarkers and pathways identified in the present study may enhance the comprehend of the molecular mechanisms underlying hepatocarcinogenesis. Additionally, mRNA expression of PRC1 and TOP2A may serve as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for HBV-related HCC.

  • Integrated analysis of competing endogenous RNA network revealing potential prognostic biomarkers of hepatocellular carcinoma
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cancer. - : Ivyspring International Publisher. - 1837-9664. ; 10:14, s. 3267-3283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The goal of our study is to identify a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network using dysregulated RNAs between HCC tumors and the adjacent normal liver tissues from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets, and to investigate underlying prognostic indicators in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Methods: All of the RNA- and miRNA-sequencing datasets of HCC were obtained from TCGA, and dysregulated RNAs between HCC tumors and the adjacent normal liver tissues were investigated by DESeq and edgeR algorithm. Survival analysis was used to confirm underlying prognostic indicators. Results: In the present study, we constructed a ceRNA network based on 16 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 7 differentially expressed microRNAs and 34 differentially expressed long non-coding RNAs (DELs). Among these dysregulated RNAs, three DELs (AP002478.1, HTR2A-AS1, and ERVMER61-1) and six DEGs (enhancer of zeste homolog 2 [EZH2], kinesin family member 23 [KIF23], chromobox 2 [CBX2], centrosomal protein 55 [CEP55], cell division cycle 25A [CDC25A], and claspin [CLSPN]) were used for construct a prognostic signature for HCC overall survival (OS), and performed well in HCC OS (adjusted P<0.0001, adjusted hazard ratio = 2.761, 95% confidence interval = 1.838-4.147). Comprehensive survival analysis demonstrated that this prognostic signature may be act as an independent prognostic indicator of HCC OS. Functional assessment of these dysregulated DEGs in the ceRNA network and gene set enrichment of this prognostic signature suggest that both were enriched in the biological processes and pathways of the cell cycle, cell division and cell proliferation. Conclusions: Our current study constructed a ceRNA network for HCC, and developed a prognostic signature that may act as an independent indicator for HCC OS.

  • Effect of collisions on drift instabilities in a field reversed configuration under conditions of magneto-inertial fusion
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7674 .- 1070-664X. ; 24:6, s. Art. no. 062704-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drift instabilities in a field reversed configuration are studied under conditions of magneto-inertial fusion (MIF). Specifically, the collisional effect is taken into account because of high-density plasmas in MIF where the drift wave frequency is smaller than the electron-ion collision frequency.Dispersion relations are based on the two fluid equations including the collisional terms; meanwhile, the electromagnetic effect is also considered due to high b values (b is the ratio of plasma pressure to magnetic pressure). It is found that in the limit of low b, the behavior of instabilities described by the dispersion relations in the present paper would become like drift instabilities in tokamaks, where beta similöar to 0.1 Therefore, in the MIF case, electromagnetic drift instabilities could be driven by electron-ion collisions due to the charge separation effect. The collisions also bring the phase difference between the perturbed density and the potential perturbation, which is significant for the particle transport.

  • Energy savings in China's energy sectors and contributions to air pollution reduction in the 12th Five Year Plan
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 200, s. 305-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy efficiency and air pollution mitigation are critical issues for future development of the Chinese economy. Energy savings and their contribution to reduced air pollution from energy sectors during the 12th Five Year Plan are assessed using input-output analysis. A new dynamic quantitative method was developed to explore key sectors and identify critical paths for efficient emission reductions from energy industries. All the energy intensive key sectors, including Metal, Power, Chemical Products, Nonmetal are used to determine critical paths for emission reductions. Results indicate that the Coal Sector failed to achieve significant energy savings and did not contribute to direct and overall emissions reductions. The Oil Sector only achieved co-effects for reduction of overall waste gas, SO2, and particulates, while the Power Sector achieved emission reductions of all air pollutants. The results suggest that Chinese government should enact four main measures to achieve effective targets for energy savings and emission reductions: (1) Strengthen energy conservation in Coal and Oil Sectors, particularly the Coal Sector. (2) Promote energy conservation and emission reductions in highly energy intensive sectors to help emission reductions from other sectors. (3) Promote synergy effects of energy savings and emission reductions to enterprises. (4) Set lowest emission reduction targets for each department combined with targets for energy savings.

  • Nestin Regulates Neurogenesis in Mice Through Notch Signaling From Astrocytes to Neural Stem Cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Cerebral Cortex. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1047-3211 .- 1460-2199. ; 29:10, s. 4050-4066
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intermediate filament (nanofilament) protein nestin is a marker of neural stem cells, but its role in neurogenesis, including adult neurogenesis, remains unclear. Here, we investigated the role of nestin in neurogenesis in adult nestin-deficient (Nes(-/-)) mice. We found that the proliferation of Nes(-/-) neural stem cells was not altered, but neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of Nes(-/-) mice was increased. Surprisingly, the proneurogenic effect of nestin deficiency was mediated by its function in the astrocyte niche. Through its role in Notch signaling from astrocytes to neural stem cells, nestin negatively regulates neuronal differentiation and survival; however, its expression in neural stem cells is not required for normal neurogenesis. In behavioral studies, nestin deficiency in mice did not affect associative learning but was associated with impaired long-term memory.

  • Generation of skyrmions by combining thermal and spin-orbit torque: breaking half skyrmions into skyrmions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: NANOSCALE. - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372. ; 16, s. 7068-7075
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Skyrmions, swirling spin textures with topologically protected stability and low critical driven-current density, can be generated from the stripe domain with current pulses, bringing them closer to practical applications in racetrack memory. However, the mechanism of this topological transition from the stripe domain to the skyrmion remains unclear because the transition process occurs at a nanosecond timescale, giving rise to difficulties in observing this process using imaging tools. In this study, we controlled the domain wall - skyrmion transition by combining Joule heating with spin-orbit torque (SOT) and experimentally observed the details of this process, by which we confirmed the mechanism: the spatial variation of the topological charge density induces half skyrmions branching from the stripe domains, and these half skyrmions overcome the surface tension and break away from the stripe domain, resulting in the generation of skyrmions. The details were observed by employing Joule heating to overcome the pinning effect and manipulating the strength of the SOT to induce the branching and breaking of half skyrmions. These findings offer new insights into skyrmion generation and serve as an important step towards the development of highly efficient devices for processing and computing based on skyrmionics. The study establishes that Joule heating combined with Spin-Orbit Torque (SOT) effectively induces the stripe domain - skyrmion transition in magnetic materials.

  • Ingår i: Molecular Neurobiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0893-7648 .- 1559-1182. ; 50:1, s. 119-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The senile plaque is a pathologic hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amyloid-beta peptide (A beta), the main constituent of senile plaques, is neurotoxic especially in its oligomeric form. A beta is derived from the sequential cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by beta- and gamma-secretases in the amyloidogenic pathway. Alternatively, APP can be cleaved by alpha-secretases within the A beta domain to produce neurotrophic and neuroprotective alpha-secretase-cleaved soluble APP (sAPP alpha) in the nonamyloidogenic pathway. Since APP and alpha-, beta-, and gamma-secretases are membrane proteins, APP processing should be highly dependent on the membrane composition and the biophysical properties of cellular membrane. In this review, we discuss the role of the biophysical properties of cellular membrane in APP processing, especially the effects of phospholipases A(2) (PLA(2)s), fatty acids, cholesterol, and A beta on membrane fluidity in relation to their effects on APP processing.

  • Observation of charge to spin conversion in Weyl semimetal WTe2 at room temperature
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Research. - 2643-1564. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discovery of topological Weyl semimetals has revealed opportunities to realize several extraordinary physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. Specifically, Weyl semimetals with strong spin-orbit coupling, broken inversion symmetry, and novel spin textures are predicted to exhibit a large spin Hall effect that can efficiently convert the charge current to a spin current. Here, we report a direct experimental observation of large spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects in the Weyl semimetal WTe2 at room temperature obeying the Onsager reciprocity relation. We demonstrate the detection of a pure spin current generated by the spin Hall phenomenon in WTe2 by making a van der Waals heterostructure with graphene, taking advantage of its long spin coherence length and spin transmission at the heterostructure interface. These experimental findings, well supported by ab initio calculations, show a large charge-spin conversion efficiency in WTe2, which can pave the way for the utilization of spin-orbit-induced phenomena in spintronic memory and logic circuit architectures.

    • Cellular membrane alterations are commonly observed in many diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Membrane biophysical properties, such as membrane molecular order, membrane fluidity, organization of lipid rafts, and adhesion between membrane and cytoskeleton, play an important role in various cellular activities and functions. While membrane biophysics impacts a broad range of cellular pathways, this review addresses the role of membrane biophysics in amyloid-beta peptide aggregation, A beta-induced oxidative pathways, amyloid precursor protein processing, and cerebral endothelial functions in AD. Understanding the mechanism(s) underlying the effects of cell membrane properties on cellular processes should shed light on the development of new preventive and therapeutic strategies for this devastating disease.
