  • Cognitive deficits and anxiety induced by diisononyl phthalate in mice and the neuroprotective effects of melatonin

    • Diisononyl phthalate (DINP) is a plasticizer that is frequently used as a substitute for other plasticizers whose use is prohibited in certain products. In vivo studies on the neurotoxicity of DINP are however, limited. This work aims to investigate whether DINP causes neurobehavioral changes in mice and to provide useful advice on preventing the occurrence of these adverse effects. Behavioral analysis showed that oral administration of 20 or 200â mg/kg/day DINP led to mouse cognitive deficits and anxiety. Brain histopathological observations, immunohistochemistry assays (cysteine-aspartic acid protease 3 [caspase-3], glial fibrillary acidic protein [GFAP]), oxidative stress assessments (reactive oxygen species [ROS], glutathione [GSH], superoxide dismutase [SOD] activities, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine [8-OH-dG] and DNA-protein crosslinks [DPC]), and assessment of inflammation (tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-Crossed D sign°[ and interleukin-1 beta [IL-1β]) of mouse brains showed that there were histopathological alterations in the brain and increased levels of oxidative stress, and inflammation for these same groups. However, some of these effects were blocked by administration of melatonin (50â mg/kg/day). Down-regulation of oxidative stress was proposed to explain the neuroprotective effects of melatonin. The data suggests that DINP could cause cognitive deficits and anxiety in mice, and that melatonin could be used to avoid these adverse effects.

    • This work demonstrated the synthesis of (4E)-4-(4-(diphenylamino)benzylideneamino)-1,2-dihydro-1,5- dimethyl-2-phenylpyrazol-3-one (DBDDP) for Fe (III) detection in aqueous media and in the core of silica cross-linked micellar nanoparticles in living cells. The free DBDDP performed fluorescence enhancement due to Fe (III)-promoted hydrolysis in a mixed aqueous solution, while the DBDDP-doped silica cross-linked micellar nanoparticles (DBDDP-SCMNPs) performed an electron-transfer based fluorescence quenching of Fe (III) in living cells. The quenching fluorescence of DBDDP-SCMNPs and the concentration of Fe (III) exhibited a linear correlation, which was in accordance with the Stern-Volmer equation. Moreover, DBDDP-SCMNPs showed a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 ppm and an excellent selectivity against other metal ions. Due to the good solubility and biocompatibility, DBDDP-SCMNPs could be applied as fluorescence quenching nanosensors in living cells.

  • Experimental study on flame characteristics of double fires in a naturally ventilated tunnel : Flame merging, flame tilt angle and flame height

    • A series of fire tests was carried out to investigate the diffusion flame characteristics of double fires generated from separated burners in a naturally ventilated tunnel, considering different heat release rates and fire separation distances. The results show that the flame tilt angle, as well as the horizontal projected flame length, first increases with fire separation distance and then remains constant, but the vertical flame length first decreases and then remains constant, which is different from two fires in free spaces where flames do not tilt when the separation distance is relatively long. This difference is caused by the non-dimensional fire induced air flow velocity in the tunnel, which is mainly related to the tunnel cross-section dimensions and burner radius. Three regions can be identified, i.e. flame vertical merging, plume vertical merging and non-merging with flame tilted. The critical flame merging separation distance, estimated by the flame merging probability, is greater than that of two fires in an open environment due to the fire-induced air flows. The merging flame height is lower than that of a single fire with a same heat release rate. A correlation was proposed to estimate flame height of two fires in a tunnel by the modified non-dimensional heat release rate using an air entrainment perimeter as the characteristic length. This work enhances the understanding of diffusion flame behaviors of double fires in naturally ventilated tunnels.

  • Multifunctional surfactants for synthesizing high-performance energy materials

    • Due to a steady increase of electrical energy consumption, the demand for high-performance energy storage materials becomes more urgent than ever. Compared to other synthetic technologies, surfactant templating method offers the most efficient way to improve electrochemical performances of energy storage materials. In the synthesis of energy storage materials prepared, various surfactants are often used and play a crucial role in determining the properties of final products. Multifunctional surfactants can effectively tailor and control particle size, crystallinity, morphology, porosity, structure and composition of energy storage materials, achieving significant enhancement in rate capability and cycle stability. Herein, we summarize various surfactants, including classic alkyl-based surfactants, polymers, biological ligands and other surface active molecules. This review highlights the essential roles of surfactants, working as structure-directing agents, carbon sources, porogens and stabilizer agents, etc., in controlling nanostructure of energy storage materials and improving their properties. For different batteries (such as lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries and alkaline batteries) and supercapacitors, similarities and differences in surfactant mechanism, functions, electrochemical performances of the synthesized materials, challenges and opportunities are discussed as well. To facilitate further development of surfactant template method, some future research trends and directions are finally put forward.

  • A study on human perception in aircraft cabins and its association with volatile organic compounds

    • More than 8 million people fly on commercial aircraft each day with approximately 5% having a pre-existing respiratory disease. Thus it is necessary to provide high air quality in aircraft to protect public health. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in aircraft cabins are suspected to contribute to the reported complaints. We investigated concentrations of VOCs, air temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentrations in a total of 46 flights, including 26 Chinese domestic flights and 20 international flights. We focused on the data from the cruising phase without meal serving in which the air supply and air recirculation were steady. A total of 284 passengers (i.e., 101 on international flights and 183 on Chinese domestic flights) were invited to participate in questionnaire surveys in this phase. We performed a linear mixed model analysis by controlling for potential confounders (age, gender, smoke habits, and history of allergy) to study associations between VOCs exposures and passengers' complaints. Xylene was significantly associated with irritations of the eyes, nose, and throat on both international and domestic flights, with antilog beta values from 1.12 to 1.28 (p < 0.05). The association of some aldehydes (i.e., nonanal, decanal, and heptanal), which are potential oxidation products with ozone, with passengers' sensory irritations was also significant, especially during international flights (antilog beta values: 1.19-1.22). It indicates that VOCs, especially xylene and aldehydes, in aircraft cabins may influence the perceived indoor air quality and complaints among passengers.

    • We investigate the mechanism of operation of low-power write-once-read-many-times (WORM) memory devices based on injection of electrons from ZnO into PEDOT:PSS (polydioxythiophene doped with polystyrenesulfonic acid). Using Raman spectroscopy and in situ absorbance measurements, we directly observe the change of doping level of PEDOT during the device switching. Our results clearly show that the change of device conductance is due to the dedoping of p-doped PEDOT by injected electrons. Based on this understanding, we further demonstrate an entirely solution-processed low-power WORM device by inkjet printing metal electrodes onto arbitrary substrates. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.     • Na2FeSiO4 (NFS)/H-N-doped hard carbon nanospheres (HN-HCNSs) hybrid cathodes have been synthesized by using ferrous gluconate as template and carbon source via sol-gel method for the first time. In the structure of this hybrid cathode, the ultrathin NFS nanosheets are uniformly anchored in the mesoporous network structure of HN-HCNSs coating, forming the fast conductive transport pathways for electrons and Na+-ions. The NFS/HN-HCNSs hybrid cathode shows a hybrid energy storage mechanism with high initial discharge capacity of 218.4 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and in the voltage range of 1.2-4.6 V versus Na/Na+. It also shows excellent long-term cycling stability (the capacity retention rates of 73.8% at 1 C after the 3300 cycles and 56.8% at 5 C after the 750 cycles in the voltage range of 1.5-4.6 V). Moreover, the unique mesoporous carbon-coated structural features endow the hybrid cathode with a maximum energy density of 331.99 W h kg(-1) and a maximum power density of 2431.87 W kg(-1) within working voltage range of 1.5-4.6 V.

    • Bone resorption occurs after bone grafting, however, contemporaneous reconstruction of the innervation of the bone graft is a potential treatment to maintain the bone mass of the graft. The innervation of bone is an emerging research topic. To understand the potential molecular mechanisms of bone innervation after bone grafting, we collected normal iliac bone tissue as well as bone grafts with or without innervation from nine patients 1 year after surgery and performed RNA sequencing. We identified differentially expressed genes) from these samples and used the gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes databases for functional enrichment and signaling pathway analysis. In parallel, we established protein-protein interaction networks to screen functional modules. Based on bioinformatic results, we validated in vitro the osteogenic differentiation potential of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) after calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) stimulation and the expression of p38 MAPK and Wnt6/β-catenin pathways during osteogenesis. Our transcriptome analysis of bone grafts reveals functional modules and signaling pathways of innervation which play a vital role in the structural and functional integration of the bone graft. Simultaneously, we demonstrate that CGRP regulates the differentiation of BMMSCs through p38 MAPK and Wnt6/β-catenin.

    • A high-performance flexible sodium-ion full battery (FSIFB) is developed by using binder-free composite film (BFCF) electrodes without using conductive carbon and current collectors. Hard carbon fibers decorated with different electrochemical active materials are used as the supporting framework and 3D conductive network of FSIFBs for the first time. Different pre-sodiated anodes and the electrolyte additives are designed for well-matched FSIFBs. Using a porous Na3V2(PO4)(3) coated hard carbon fiber film with a mass loading of 2.34 mg cm(-2) as the cathode and a pre-sodiated graphene/SiC/hard carbon fiber film with a mass loading of 1.50 mg cm(-2) as the anode, an optimized FSIFB is designed. It delivers high output voltage (3.34 V), high energy density (234.1 W h kg(-1) at a high-current rate of 0.5 A g(-1)), ultralong cyclability (over 2905 cycles at 0.5 A g(-1) and 1000 cycles at 5 A g(-1)), and high coulombic efficiency (approaching 100%), which surpasses those of all FSIFBs reported so far. Furthermore, this FSIFB still maintains good electrochemical attributes even at serious bending states in water. The models of the solid electrolyte interphase behavior on the surface of electrodes in the FSIFB are studied by using EIS, and a reaction mechanism and an equivalent electrical circuit are proposed. We also provide the videos of the preparation process for a pouch-type FSIFB to demonstrate its simple operability and potential applications.

    • Most of the building renovation plans are usually decided in the early design stage. This delicate phase contains the greatest opportunity to achieve the high energy performance buildings after refurbishment. It is therefore important to provide the pertinent energy performance information for the designers or decision-makers from multidisciplinary and comparative points of view. This paper investigates the renovation concept of a novel loop-heat-pipe based solar thermal facade (LHP-STF) installed on a reference residential building by technical evaluation and economic analysis in three typical European climates, including North Europe (represented by Stockholm), West Europe (represented by London) and South Europe (represented by Madrid). The aim of this paper is firstly to explore the LHP-STF’s sensitivity with regards to the overall building socio-energy performance and secondly to study the LHP-STF’s economic feasibility by developing a dedicated business model. The reference building model was derived from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) commercial buildings research, in which the energy data for the building models were from the ASHRAE codes and other standard practices. The financial data were collected from the European statistic institute and the cost of system was based on the manufactured prototype. Several critical financial indexes were applied to evaluate the investment feasibility of the LHP-STF system in building renovation, such as Payback Period (PP), Net Present Value (NPV), and the modified internal rate of return method (IRR). Four common investment options were considered in this business model, including buying outright (BO), buying by instalment (BI), energy efficiency funding (EEF) and power purchase agreement (PPA). The research results indicate that the LHP-STF could contribute to the hot water load throughout the year with substantially reduced heating load in winter, and yet a slight increased cooling load in summer. Among four investment options, the BO was considered as the best investment method with the highest NPV, IRR and the shortest payback period. With regards to relatively limited solar resources, London was found to be the best place for investment with the highest economical revenues and an attractive payback period of less than four years for all purchase options. Although Madrid has the richest solar resource, this system has the lowest economic profit and the longest payback period. This outcome confirms that the renewable energy incentives have a higher impact than solar resources on current solar thermal facade technologies under such pricing fundamentals. This multidisciplinary research is expected to be helpful for the strategic decisions at the early design stage for building renovation with the proposed system and further promote development of solar driven service system, leading to the savings in fossil fuel consumption and reduction in carbon emission.
