  • OISTER optical and near-infrared monitoring observations of peculiar radio-loud active galactic nucleus SDSSJ110006.07+442144.3
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nippon Tenmon Gakkai obun kenkyu hokoku. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-6264. ; 69:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present monitoring campaign observations at optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths for a radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z = 0.840, SDSSJ110006.07+442144.3 (hereafter, J1100+4421), which was identified during a flare phase in late 2014 February. The campaigns consist of three intensive observing runs from the discovery to 2015 March, mostly within the scheme of the OISTER collaboration. Optical-NIR light curves and simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are obtained. Our measurements show the strongest brightening in 2015 March. We found that the optical-NIR SEDs of J1100+4421 show an almost steady shape despite the large and rapid intranight variability. This constant SED shape is confirmed to extend to similar to 5 mu m in the observed frame using the archival WISE data. Given the lack of absorption lines and the steep power-law spectrum of alpha(upsilon) similar to -1.4, where f(v) proportional to v(alpha upsilon), synchrotron radiation by a relativistic jet with no or small contributions from the host galaxy and the accretion disk seemsmost plausible as an optical-NIR emission mechanism. The steep optical-NIR spectral shape and the large amplitude of variability are consistent with this object being a low.peak jet-dominated AGN. In addition, sub-arcsecond resolution optical imaging data taken with Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam does not show a clear extended component and the spatial scales are significantly smaller than the large extensions detected at radio wavelengths. The optical spectrum of a possible faint companion galaxy does not show any emission lines at the same redshift, and hence a merging hypothesis for this AGN-related activity is not supported by our observations.

  • Protective Effects of Oral Astaxanthin Nanopowder against Ultraviolet-Induced Photokeratitis in Mice
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity. - : HINDAWI LTD. - 1942-0900 .- 1942-0994.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. Astaxanthin (AST) has a strong antioxidant cellular membrane chaperone protective effect. Recently, a water-soluble nanosized AST (nano-AST) form was produced, which is expected to improve the efficacy of oral intake effects. The purpose of this study was to examine whether oral nano-AST has therapeutic effects on UV-induced photokeratitis in mice. Methods. C57BL/6 mice were administered twice with either nano-AST, AST oil, lutein, or bilberry extracts 3 hours before and shortly before UV irradiation (dose: 400 mJ/cm2). The corneas were collected 24 hours after irradiation and stained with Hamp;E and TUNEL. NF-kappa B, dihydroethidium (DHE), COX-2, p-I kappa B-alpha, TNF alpha, and CD45 expression were evaluated through immunohistochemistry, Western blot analysis, and qPCR. Results. Corneal epithelium was significantly thicker in mice orally administered with nano-AST than in the others (p amp;lt; 0.01), with significantly less NF-kappa B nucleus translocation (p amp;lt; 0.001), and significantly fewer TUNEL cells (p amp;lt; 0.01). Weaker DHE signals were detected in the nano-AST group (p amp;lt; 0.05) relative to the others. Furthermore, reduced inflammation and decreased cell death in corneal tissue were observed in the nano-AST group, as indicated by a reduction in the expression of COX-2, p-I kappa B-alpha, TNFa, and CD45. Conclusions. Oral administration of nano-AST demonstrated a protective effect on UV-induced photokeratitis via antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic activity.

  • Polarimetric properties of the near-Sun asteroid (155140) 2005 UD in comparison with other asteroids and meteoritic samples
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 509:3, s. 4128-4142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The investigation of asteroids near the Sun is important for understanding the final evolutionary stage of primitive Solar system objects. A near-Sun asteroid (NSA), (155140) 2005 UD, has orbital elements similar to those of (3200) Phaethon (the target asteroid for the JAXA’s DESTINY+ mission). We conducted photometric and polarimetric observations of 2005 UD and found that this asteroid exhibits a polarization phase curve similar to that of Phaethon over a wide range of observed solar phase angles (α = 20–105°) but different from those of (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu (asteroids composed of hydrated carbonaceous materials). At a low phase angle (α ≲ 30°), the polarimetric properties of these NSAs (2005 UD and Phaethon) are consistent with anhydrous carbonaceous chondrites, while the properties of Bennu are consistent with hydrous carbonaceous chondrites. We derived the geometric albedo, pV ∼ 0.1 (in the range of 0.088–0.109); mean V-band absolute magnitude, HV = 17.54 ± 0.02; synodic rotational period, Trot=5.2388±0.0022h (the two-peaked solution is assumed); and effective mean diameter, Deff=1.32±0.06km. At large phase angles (α ≳ 80°), the polarization phase curve are likely explained by the dominance of large grains and the paucity of small micron-sized grains. We conclude that the polarimetric similarity of these NSAs can be attributed to the intense solar heating of carbonaceous materials around their perihelia, where large anhydrous particles with small porosity could be produced by sintering.

  • Clonal expansion and spread of the ceftriaxone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain FC428, identified in Japan in 2015, and closely related isolates
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. - : Oxford University Press. - 0305-7453 .- 1460-2091. ; 74:7, s. 1812-1819
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: Ceftriaxone resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a major public health concern globally because a high-dose (1 g) injection of ceftriaxone is the only remaining option for empirical monotherapy of gonorrhoea. The ceftriaxone-resistant gonococcal strain FC428, cultured in Osaka in 2015, is suspected to have spread nationally and internationally. We describe the complete finished genomes of FC428 and two closely related isolates from Osaka in 2015, and examine the genomic epidemiology of these isolates plus three ceftriaxone-resistant gonococcal isolates from Osaka and Hyogo in 2016-17 and four ceftriaxone-resistant gonococcal isolates cultured in 2017 in Australia, Canada and Denmark.METHODS: During 2015-17, we identified six ceftriaxone-resistant gonococcal isolates through our surveillance systems in Kyoto, Osaka and Hyogo. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (six antimicrobials) was performed using Etest. Complete whole-genome sequences of the first three isolates (FC428, FC460 and FC498) from 2015 were obtained using PacBio RS II and Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The three complete genome sequences and draft genome sequences of the three additional Japanese (sequenced with Illumina MiSeq) and four international ceftriaxone-resistant isolates were compared.RESULTS: Detailed genomic analysis suggested that the Japanese isolates (FC428, FC460, FC498, KU16054, KM383 and KU17039) and the four international MLST ST1903 isolates from Australia, Canada and Denmark formed four linked subclades.CONCLUSIONS: Using detailed genomic analysis, we describe the clonal expansion of the ceftriaxone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae strain FC428, initially identified in 2015 in Japan, and closely related isolates. FC428 and its close relatives show some genomic diversity, suggesting multiple genetic subclades are already spreading internationally.

  • Total daily energy expenditure has declined over the past three decades due to declining basal expenditure, not reduced activity expenditure
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Metabolism. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2522-5812. ; 5:4, s. 579-588
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Obesity is caused by a prolonged positive energy balance(1,2). Whether reduced energy expenditure stemming from reduced activity levels contributes is debated(3,4). Here we show that in both sexes, total energy expenditure (TEE) adjusted for body composition and age declined since the late 1980s, while adjusted activity energy expenditure increased over time. We use the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labelled Water database on energy expenditure of adults in the United States and Europe (n = 4,799) to explore patterns in total (TEE: n = 4,799), basal (BEE: n = 1,432) and physical activity energy expenditure (n = 1,432) over time. In males, adjusted BEE decreased significantly, but in females this did not reach significance. A larger dataset of basal metabolic rate (equivalent to BEE) measurements of 9,912 adults across 163 studies spanning 100 years replicates the decline in BEE in both sexes. We conclude that increasing obesity in the United States/Europe has probably not been fuelled by reduced physical activity leading to lowered TEE. We identify here a decline in adjusted BEE as a previously unrecognized factor.

  • Ground-state electron transfer in all-polymer donor-acceptor heterojunctions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4660 .- 1476-1122. ; 19:7, s. 738-744
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Doping of organic semiconductors is crucial for the operation of organic (opto)electronic and electrochemical devices. Typically, this is achieved by adding heterogeneous dopant molecules to the polymer bulk, often resulting in poor stability and performance due to dopant sublimation or aggregation. In small-molecule donor–acceptor systems, charge transfer can yield high and stable electrical conductivities, an approach not yet explored in all-conjugated polymer systems. Here, we report ground-state electron transfer in all-polymer donor–acceptor heterojunctions. Combining low-ionization-energy polymers with high-electron-affinity counterparts yields conducting interfaces with resistivity values five to six orders of magnitude lower than the separate single-layer polymers. The large decrease in resistivity originates from two parallel quasi-two-dimensional electron and hole distributions reaching a concentration of ∼1013 cm–2. Furthermore, we transfer the concept to three-dimensional bulk heterojunctions, displaying exceptional thermal stability due to the absence of molecular dopants. Our findings hold promise for electro-active composites of potential use in, for example, thermoelectrics and wearable electronics.

  • Accessing the Conduction Band Dispersion in CH3NH3PbI3 Single Crystals
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1948-7185. ; 12:15, s. 3773-3778
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conduction band dispersion in methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) was studied by both angle-resolved two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy (AR-2PPE) with low photon intensity (similar to 0.0125 nJ/pulse) and angle-resolved low-energy inverse photoelectron spectroscopy (AR-LEIPS). Clear energy dispersion of the conduction band along the Gamma-M direction was first observed by these independent methods under different temperatures, and the dispersion was found to be consistent with band calculation under the cubic phase. The effective mass of the electrons at the Gamma point was estimated to be (0.20 +/- 0.05)m(0) at the temperature of 90 K. The observed conduction band energy was different between the AR-LEIPS and AR-2PPE, which was ascribed to the electronic-correlation-dependent difference of initial and final states probing processes. The present results also indicate that the surface structure in CH3NH3PbI3 provides the cubic-dominated electronic property even at lower temperatures.

  • Temperature-dependent band structure evolution determined by surface geometry in organic halide perovskite single crystals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 102:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic halide perovskites have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in optoelectronic devices. Since the generally higher flexibility compared to their inorganic counterparts, their structures are prone to be more sensitive toward external effects, where the fundamental understanding of their band structure evolutions is still inconclusive. In this study, different electronic structure evolutions of perovskite single crystals are found via angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy: (i) Unchanged top valence band (VB) dispersions under different temperatures can be found in the CH3NH3PbI3. (ii) Phase transitions induced the evolution of top VB dispersions, and even a top VB splitting with Rashba effects can be observed in the CH3NH3PbBr3. Combined with low-energy electron diffraction, metastable atom electron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculation, we confirm that different band structure evolutions observed in these two perovskite single crystals originated from the cleaved top surface layers, where the different surface geometries with CH3NH3+-I in CH3NH3PbI3 and Pb-Br in CH3NH3PbBr3 are responsible for finding band dispersion change and appearance of the Rashba-type splitting. Such findings suggest that the top surface layer in organic halide perovskites should be carefully considered to create functional interfaces for developing perovskite devices.

  • Variants in KCNQ1 are associated with susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 40:9, s. 1092-1097
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We carried out a multistage genome-wide association study of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japanese individuals, with a total of 1,612 cases and 1,424 controls and 100,000 SNPs. The most significant association was obtained with SNPs in KCNQ1, and dense mapping within the gene revealed that rs2237892 in intron 15 showed the lowest P value (6.7 x 10(-13), odds ratio (OR) = 1.49). The association of KCNQ1 with type 2 diabetes was replicated in populations of Korean, Chinese and European ancestry as well as in two independent Japanese populations, and meta-analysis with a total of 19,930 individuals (9,569 cases and 10,361 controls) yielded a P value of 1.7 x 10(-42) (OR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.34-1.47) for rs2237892. Among control subjects, the risk allele of this polymorphism was associated with impairment of insulin secretion according to the homeostasis model assessment of beta-cell function or the corrected insulin response. Our data thus implicate KCNQ1 as a diabetes susceptibility gene in groups of different ancestries.

  • Ion-modulated radical doping of spiro-OMeTAD for more efficient and stable perovskite solar cells
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science. - : AMER ASSOC ADVANCEMENT SCIENCE. - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 377:6605, s. 495-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Record power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been obtained with the organic hole transporter 2,2,7,7-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl-amine)9,9-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD). Conventional doping of spiro-OMeTAD with hygroscopic lithium salts and volatile 4-tert-butylpyridine is a time-consuming process and also leads to poor device stability. We developed a new doping strategy for spiro-OMeTAD that avoids post-oxidation by using stable organic radicals as the dopant and ionic salts as the doping modulator (referred to as ion-modulated radical doping). We achieved PCEs of >25% and much-improved device stability under harsh conditions. The radicals provide hole polarons that instantly increase the conductivity and work function (WF), and ionic salts further modulate the WF by affecting the energetics of the hole polarons. This organic semiconductor doping strategy, which decouples conductivity and WF tunability, could inspire further optimization in other optoelectronic devices.
