    • This paper presents an experimental comparison among the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) and orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) waveforms in a terahertz photonic-wireless point-to-point communication system operating at 300GHz. Our results show that, all waveforms have similar peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), the OTFS and OTFS waveforms can achieve comparable bit error rate (BER) performance, while the FBMC waveform outperforms in terms of the out-of-band decay at the cost of non-orthogonality between subcarriers, leading to the deterioration of BER performance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region.

    • Semiconductor InSb nanowires are expected to provide an excellent material platform for the study of Majorana fermions in solid state systems. Here, we report on the realization of a Nb-InSb nanowire-Nb hybrid quantum device and the observation of a zero-bias conductance peak structure in the device. An InSb nanowire quantum dot is formed in the device between the two Nb contacts. Due to the proximity effect, the InSb nanowire segments covered by the superconductor Nb contacts turn to superconductors with a superconducting energy gap Δ(InSb) ∼ 0.25 meV. A tunable critical supercurrent is observed in the device in high back gate voltage regions in which the Fermi level in the InSb nanowire is located above the tunneling barriers of the quantum dot and the device is open to conduction. When a perpendicular magnetic field is applied to the devices, the critical supercurrent is seen to decrease as the magnetic field increases. However, at sufficiently low back gate voltages, the device shows the quasi-particle Coulomb blockade characteristics and the supercurrent is strongly suppressed even at zero magnetic field. This transport characteristic changes when a perpendicular magnetic field stronger than a critical value, at which the Zeeman energy in the InSb nanowire is E(z) ∼ Δ(InSb), is applied to the device. In this case, the transport measurements show a conductance peak at the zero bias voltage and the entire InSb nanowire in the device behaves as in a topological superconductor phase. We also show that this zero-bias conductance peak structure can persist over a large range of applied magnetic fields and could be interpreted as a transport signature of Majorana fermions in the InSb nanowire.

    • We explore the signatures of Majorana fermions in a nanowire based topological superconductor-quantum dot-topological superconductor hybrid device by charge transport measurements. At zero magnetic field, well-defined Coulomb diamonds and the Kondo effect are observed. Under the application of a finite, sufficiently strong magnetic field, a zero-bias conductance peak structure is observed. It is found that the zero-bias conductance peak is present in many consecutive Coulomb diamonds, irrespective of the even-odd parity of the quasi-particle occupation number in the quantum dot. In addition, we find that the zero-bias conductance peak is in most cases accompanied by two differential conductance peaks, forming a triple-peak structure, and the separation between the two side peaks in bias voltage shows oscillations closely correlated to the background Coulomb conductance oscillations of the device. The observed zero-bias conductance peak and the associated triple-peak structure are in line with Majorana fermion physics in such a hybrid topological system.

    • We report on realization and transport spectroscopy study of single quantum dots (QDs) made from InSb nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The nanowires employed are 50-80 nm in diameter and the QDs are defined in the nanowires between the source and drain contacts on a Si/SiO2 substrate. We show that highly tunable QD devices can be realized with the MBE-grown InSb nanowires and the gate-to-dot capacitance extracted in the many-electron regimes is scaled linearly with the longitudinal dot size, demonstrating that the devices are of single InSb nanowire QDs even with a longitudinal size of similar to 700 nm. In the few-electron regime, the quantum levels in the QDs are resolved and the Lande g-factors extracted for the quantum levels from the magnetotransport measurements are found to be strongly level-dependent and fluctuated in a range of 18-48. A spin-orbit coupling strength is extracted from the magnetic field evolutions of a ground state and its neighboring excited state in an InSb nanowire QD and is on the order of similar to 300 mu eV. Our results establish that the MBE-grown InSb nanowires are of high crystal quality and are promising for the use in constructing novel quantum devices, such as entangled spin qubits, one-dimensional Wigner crystals and topological quantum computing devices.

  • A Single-Electron Transistor Made of a 3D Topological Insulator Nanoplate

    • Quantum confined devices of 3D topological insulators are proposed to be promising and of great importance for studies of confined topological states and for applications in low-energy-dissipative spintronics and quantum information processing. The absence of energy gap on the topological insulator surface limits the experimental realization of a quantum confined system in 3D topological insulators. Here, the successful realization of single-electron transistor devices in Bi2Te3 nanoplates using state-of-the-art nanofabrication techniques is reported. Each device consists of a confined central island, two narrow constrictions that connect the central island to the source and drain, and surrounding gates. Low-temperature transport measurements demonstrate that the two narrow constrictions function as tunneling junctions and the device shows well-defined Coulomb current oscillations and Coulomb-diamond-shaped charge-stability diagrams. This work provides a controllable and reproducible way to form quantum confined systems in 3D topological insulators, which should greatly stimulate research toward confined topological states, low-energy-dissipative devices, and quantum information processing.

  • Expression, purification and crystallization of CTB-MPR, a candidate mucosal vaccine component against HIV-1

    • CTB-MPR is a fusion protein between the B subunit of cholera toxin (CTB) andthe membrane-proximal region of gp41 (MPR), the transmembrane envelopeprotein ofHuman immunodeficiency virus 1(HIV-1), and has previously beenshown to induce the production of anti-HIV-1 antibodies with antiviralfunctions. To further improve the design of this candidate vaccine, X-raycrystallography experiments were performed to obtain structural informationabout this fusion protein. Several variants of CTB-MPR were designed,constructed and recombinantly expressed inEscherichia coli. The first variantcontained a flexible GPGP linker between CTB and MPR, and yielded crystalsthat diffracted to a resolution of 2.3 A ̊, but only the CTB region was detectedin the electron-density map. A second variant, in which the CTB was directlyattached to MPR, was shown to destabilize pentamer formation. A thirdconstruct containing a polyalanine linker between CTB and MPR proved tostabilize the pentameric form of the protein during purification. The purificationprocedure was shown to produce a homogeneously pure and monodispersesample for crystallization. Initial crystallization experiments led to pseudo-crystals which were ordered in only two dimensions and were disordered inthe third dimension. Nanocrystals obtained using the same precipitant showedpromising X-ray diffraction to 5 A ̊resolution in femtosecond nanocrystallo-graphy experiments at the Linac Coherent Light Source at the SLAC NationalAccelerator Laboratory. The results demonstrate the utility of femtosecondX-ray crystallography to enable structural analysis based on nano/microcrystalsof a protein for which no macroscopic crystals ordered in three dimensions havebeen observed before.

    • To achieve integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) applications with high data rates and high resolution, the terahertz-over-fiber (ToF) system has been recognized as a promising solution. However, the frequency-selective fading would deteriorate the performance of the ToF-based ISAC systems. In this work, we propose the orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) waveform-based ToF system for high-performance ISAC applications. The system encodes data with the phase of the sub-chirps and obtains radar images by processing echoes with the zero-padded matched filtering algorithm. We experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-concept OCDM-ToF system, which simultaneously achieves a 32 Gbit/s data rate and 1.875 cm range resolution after transmission over a 10 km optical fiber and a 3.14 m wireless link at the THz band, for the first time. The experimental results indicate that the OCDM-ToF system can enhance robustness against the frequency-selective fading issue, as a benefit improving communication performance with high data rates while preserving the high sensing resolution of OFDM in the THz ISAC applications.

    • The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a promising technology to simultaneously perform high-capacity communication and high-accuracy sensing with efficient resource utilization. Nevertheless, due to the severe mutual constraints between communication and sensing functions, the performance of previously reported ISAC demonstrations notably trails that of individual communication or sensing systems. In this work, an integrated LFM-QAM waveform is proposed and theoretically analyzed by combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. Employing the proposed waveform and optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique, we experimentally implement a multi-channel photonic terahertz (THz)-ISAC wireless system operating at 275 GHz band, simultaneously achieving a communication data rate up to 120 Gbps and a range resolution as high as 2.5 mm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate beyond 100 Gbps wireless data rate and mm-scale resolution based on an integrated waveform in the THz region, revealing the potential of THz-ISAC performance.

Up to date, previously reported demonstrations regarding radar sensing performance lack sufficient support in a complex environment with a strong target masking effect. This work tacks this problem by proposing a radar-centric waveform combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform and phase shift keying (PSK). We first derive sensing metrics of the LFM-PSK waveform through theoretical analysis, including range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR), and Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Then a proof-of-concept experiment on a photonics-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating at 330 with 18 GHz bandwidth is conducted to verify the performance of the proposed LFM-PSK waveform. In the experiment, the proposed waveform can reach a PSLR of up to 20.9 dB and a range resolution of 1.3 cm, simultaneously accommodating a data transmission of 6 Gbit/s. In addition, the effect of embedding symbols on sensing metrics is also discussed, and by comparing the range solution and PSLR with various data rates, around $\sim$ 6 dB gain in the PSLR without any deterioration of range resolution is observed.

    • High-quality GaSb nanowires (NWs) have been synthesized via chemical vapor deposition. The as-synthesized NWs have a zinc-blende structure with growth direction along a < 011 > direction. Raman spectrum of the GaSb NWs consists of two peaks, corresponding to the LO and TO phonon modes, respectively. The temperature dependence of the photoluminescence spectra shows a blue-shift as the temperature decreases from 300 to 13 K. The electrical properties of the GaSb NWs are investigated over a wide range of temperatures from 25 mK to 291 K. The results show that the GaSb NWs exhibit excellent p-type transistor performance at low temperatures (<40 K). The room-temperature hole density and mobility were found to be similar to 2.2 x 10(18) cm(-3) and similar to 14.2 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively. The Schottky contact characteristics were observed and the barrier height was found to be similar to 14 meV. Our results show that the GaSb NWs could be used as building blocks for emerging p-type nanoelectronic devices in extremely low temperature environments.

    • In recent years, remarkable achievements have been witnessed in developing terahertz (THz) communication systems with high data rates. However, the analyzers/receivers of most THz communication systems still heavily rely on electronic circuits with limited bandwidth, obstructing the further exploration of THz resource. In this work, an equivalent-Time sampling (ETS) system based on a conventional photoconductive antenna (PCA) is proposed for capturing high-speed THz signals. The PCA is excited by ultrashort optical pulses from a low repetition-rate mode-locked laser (MLL) and hence alternates the sampling of high-speed THz signals into low-frequency domain. The proposed ETS system for THz signals is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proof-of-concept experiment, an on-off keying (OOK) signal with a baud rate of 15 Gbaud are successfully sampled and evaluated. The proposed THz ETS system can be easily accessible by low-speed electronics, which is expected to bring new opportunities for high-speed THz time-domain analyzer.

    • Photonics-aided terahertz (THz) wireless systems have been progressively developed to accommodate the forthcoming wireless communication with extremely high data rates in recent years. However, restrained by the obtainable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the dimensions explored in THz photonic wireless systems, achieving data rates of Tbit/s and beyond is still challenging. In this paper, we present a multi-dimensional multiplexing Tbit/s THz-over-Fiber wireless communication system, by efficiently benefiting from the multiplexing gain in both optical wavelength and space domains. Enabled by a combined routine of an optical frequency comb, a low inter-core crosstalk (IC-XT) multi-core fiber and advanced digital signal processing, a line rate of up to 1176 Gbit/s over a wireless distance of 10 m in the 350 GHz band is experimentally demonstrated without any THz amplifiers, resulting in a net data rate of up to 1059 Gbit/s. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that beyond Tbit/s wireless data rate is successfully achieved in the THz region above 300 GHz, making a significant contribution to the development of THz-over-Fiber systems for the sixth generation (6G) wireless communication.

    • Patterning of high-quality two-dimensional chalcogenide crystals with unique planar structures and various fascinating electronic properties offers great potential for batch fabrication and integration of electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, it remains a challenge that requires accurate control of the crystallization, thickness, position, orientation and layout. Here we develop a method that combines microintaglio printing with van der Waals epitaxy to efficiently pattern various single-crystal two-dimensional chalcogenides onto transparent insulating mica substrates. Using this approach, we have patterned large-area arrays of two-dimensional single-crystal Bi2Se3 topological insulator with a record high Hall mobility of ∼1,750 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) at room temperature. Furthermore, our patterned two-dimensional In2Se3 crystal arrays have been integrated and packaged to flexible photodetectors, yielding an ultrahigh external photoresponsivity of ∼1,650 A W(-1) at 633 nm.   • The efficiency of continuous regional intra-arterial infusion in the treatment of infected pancreatic necrosis

    • Objective: Our aim was to investigate the efficiency of continuous regional intra-arterial infusion (CRAI) with antisecretory agents and antibiotics in the treatment of infected pancreatic necrosis. Materials and methods: CRAI was used as a new clinical technique to treat acute pancreatitis patients during a 4-year period at the First Affiliated Hospital, Wenzhou Medical College, China. In this retrospective study, thirty-four patients with proven infected pancreatic necrosis were included. Twelve patients were treated with CRAL and were matched according to age, sex, APACHE II scores, Ranson scores and remote organ dysfunction, with 22 patients with IPN treated surgically. The clinical outcome following surgery and CRAI were compared. Results: No difference was found between the two groups when comparing age, gender, APACHE II scores, Ranson scores and remote organ dysfunction (p > 0.05). The patients treated with CRAI had a lower incidence of complications (33.3% vs 72.7%), duration of hospitalization (27.1 +/- 4.7 days vs 43.0 +/- 12.0 days) and cost of hospitalization (4.09 +/- 1.64 thousand RMB vs 8.77 +/- 3.74 thousand RMB) as compared to patients treated with surgery (p < 0.05). The survival rate was significantly higher in the CRAI group as compared to the surgical group (91.7% vs 63.6%; p < 0.01). However, the two groups had similar rates of concomitant operative treatment and incidence of remote organ dysfunction (p > 0.05). Conclusions: CRAI or CRAI in combination with abscess drainage seemingly improve the clinical outcome in patients with infected pancreatic necrosis. Further confirmative prospective randomized multicenter studies are warranted prior to broad introduction of the CRAI concept. Copyright (C) 2013, IAP and EPC.
