  • A gender sensitive perspective of corporate culture and the spawning of intrapreneurs
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We reconcile the theory on corporate culture and gender to develop and test hypotheses predicting the spawning of intrapreneurs. The results from a representative, large scale survey of employees in Swedish private companies suggest a gender sensitive perspective on corporate culture, which relaxes the assumption of cultural homogeneity. Specifically, a competitive corporate culture is likely to spawn male intrapreneurs, whereas a corporate culture with intrapreneurial role models spawns both male and female intrapreneurs, but particularly female. Implications for management of the growing organizations with regard to corporate entrepreneurship, human resources, and gender equality are discussed.

  • How organizational conditions affect employees' intentions to engage in intrapreneurial new venturing
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Technovation. - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-4972 .- 1879-2383. ; 135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many businesses are finding it difficult to strengthen employees' intentions to engage in intrapreneurial new venturing. In this study, we investigate the organizational conditions that are conducive to the formation of such intentions, specifically employees' intentions to initiate the development of new products or services in their host corporation. The results from a survey of 3492 employees of Swedish companies, including small, medium-sized, and large firms, reveal that recognizing and rewarding personal achievements, maintaining a risk-taking organizational culture, and top management support are all associated with stronger employee intentions to engage in intrapreneurial new venturing. There is weaker support for the predicted positive effect of personal independence and the presence of intrapreneurial role models. Time availability appears to have an inverted ushaped relationship to employees' intentions to engage in intrapreneurial new venturing. Overall, the findings support the idea that organizations can be purposefully designed for strengthening intrapreneurial new venturing among their employees.

  • How planned behavior drives employee intentions to pursue new product and service development
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper demonstrates the relevance of the theory of planned behavior to predict the drivers of employee intentions to become engaged in the development of new products and services. The results from a survey of 3,435 employees of Swedish companies, including small, medium-sized, and large firms, reveal a number of factors related to attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control that have either a positive or a negative influence on the presence of such intentions. We further show how the strength of the identified relationships varies with firm size. Overall, the findings suggest that firms may differ substantially, in terms of their ability to support employee initiatives that are critical for sustained introduction of new products and services. Our study contributes to the corporate entrepreneurship literature by explaining how organizational and individual conditions drive the introduction of new products and services.

  • Weathering storms – Technological exploration of MNCs in times of financial crisis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of World Business. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 58:2, s. 101416-101416
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We generate new knowledge about financial crises and their consequences for MNC technological development, thereby addressing a largely uncharted issue at the crossroads of the organization, strategy and international business literatures. Drawing on threat-rigidity theory, we argue that financial crises have an overall negative effect on MNC technological exploration and that the strength of the effect differs across greenfield and acquired subsidiaries. Results from an empirical investigation of 21 MNCs over the 1890–2008 period suggest that the dampening effect of financial crises on technological exploration is confined to home-country units and greenfield subsidiaries, whereas it is found to be of less significance among acquired foreign subsidiaries. We suggest that such differentiation within the MNC is indicative of a previously unobserved advantage from multinationality, which allows it to smoothen the effects of financial crises on long-term technological development and corporate growth.

  • Who is in and who is out? : Integration of technological knowledge in the multinational corporation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 28:3, s. 437-457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns the integration of technological knowledge within multinational corporations (MNCs). We empirically investigate the degree of technological knowledge integration of competence-creating subsidiaries with headquarters and sister subsidiaries and explore the effects of intersubsidiary differentiation. Data on the complete US patenting activity of 22 Swedish multinationals from 1893 to 2008 reveal significant differences in degrees of technological knowledge integration. As expected, the results show that greenfield subsidiaries are more integrated with headquarters and other greenfield subsidiaries than with acquired subsidiaries. In contrast, acquired subsidiaries do not appear to be as easily integrated into the MNC, and for this group the empirical evidence shows very little integration of technological knowledge. The findings provide extended insights into the role of competence-creating subsidiaries as providers of technological knowledge to headquarters and other MNC subsidiaries, and suggest a distinct pattern of subsidiary knowledge integration, ordered by what appears to be in-groups and out-groups, that has been overlooked in the prior MNC literature.

  • Win, place, or show? : How foreign market entry strategies contribute to the technological growth of the multinational corporation
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the sources of technological growth of the multinational corporation. We conceptualize and shed empirical light on whether foreign investment strategies based on advanced greenfield subsidiaries, acquired subsidiaries, or a combination of both increase the likelihood of entry into technologies that represent new additions to the MNC’s technology portfolio. Repeated events analyses of the complete U.S. patenting activity in 226 foreign locations of 21 Swedish multinationals reveal a substantially higher likelihood of entry into new technologies among investment strategies based on foreign acquisitions, as opposed to investment strategies based on greenfield establishments only. To the extent MNC managers seek to enhance technological and strategic renewal through the expansion of foreign operations, the findings suggest that foreign investment strategies that involve the use of acquisitions are and should be the preferred alternative.

  • Fat Cats? : A Case for the Swedish Managers' Making Sense of the Developing Markets
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis, I report a set of four studies designed to enhance the understanding of how managers of multinational enterprises (MNEs) perceive and make sense of their business environment under the conditions of gradual, long term environmental change. The focus lies on immanent sensemaking, a process occurring under the conditions of such an environmental change, which fails to give rise to a cosmology episode and consequently energise sensemaking as it has been traditionally understood. More specifically, the investigation is set on the evolution of Swedish MNE managers’ mental frames reflecting the growing importance of what is called developing markets. In the first study, I offer a qualitative probe into the mental frames held by five top managers of a selected MNE. The managers were interviewed and from these interviews, the managers’ mental frames were reconstructed. This study follows a design commonly used in sensemaking research. In the second study, I track the evolution of mental frames of top executives as expressed in CEOs’ letters to shareholders in a sample of 22 largest Swedish MNEs between 1991 and 2015. I juxtapose this with macroeconomic data reflecting the investigated environmental change. In the third study, I use the same data to investigate the intensity of sensemaking activities of the managers over the years. In the fourth study, I report results of a cluster analysis of the investigated companies. With the use of methods borrowed from psychological research, these four studies allow me to extend the sensemaking perspective to incorporate what is called immanent sensemaking, i.e. a sensemaking activity of low intensity and low cognitive strain, which allows for modification of extant mental frames in the face of slowly paced environmental changes which are unlikely to energise what is called episodic sensemaking, i.e. intensive, strenuous cognitive activity. I also offer an early attempt at conducting a sensemaking investigation of data of quantitative character.

  • Developments in Strategic Entrepreneurship
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: FOUNDATIONS AND TRENDS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP. - : NOW PUBLISHERS INC. - 1551-3114 .- 1551-3122. ; 16:6, s. 444-513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Now almost twenty years ago, strategic entrepreneurship emerged as a new and high-potential field of research at the crossroads of the entrepreneurship and strategic management literatures. In this review, we track the development of this new field of research to see whether it has lived up to the original promises. Based on the review of 131 articles that have appeared over the period 2001-2019, we conclude that strategic entrepreneurship research is yet to develop the coherence and momentum that will allow it to take off more emphatically. In the discussion, we outline a set of interrelated issues concerned with conceptual ambiguity, model boundaries, and consistency in the application of conceptual foundations which we believe have had an attenuating effect on past developments of the field. We conclude our review by identifying a number of avenues for future research, alongside a pressing need for producing firmer practical guidelines for how to effectively integrate the entrepreneurial and strategic aspects of management.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 58:1, s. 15-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The 2020 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research has been awarded to Professor John Haltiwanger. John Haltiwanger has made significant contributions to the field of entrepreneurship by improving our understanding of job creation and destruction, productivity growth, and the role of small- and medium-sized firms (SMEs) in economic development. He has played a major role in the careful development of large, longitudinal firm-level datasets, and introduced a novel and widely adopted measure of firm growth that addresses previous statistical biases. His work has influenced public policy and national statistical offices around the world. Plain English Summary The winner of the 2020 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, John Haltiwanger, has pioneered research showing that it is mainly firm age, not size, that matters for job creation. Through analyzing the relationship between employment, growth, and firms, he has advanced our understanding of how the economy works. He has done this by building new datasets and introducing a new measure of firm growth, solving problems encountered with earlier techniques. His work has also broadened the policy debate on entrepreneurship and inspired people all around the world. From a policy perspective, John Haltiwanger has shown that it is difficult to justify targeted industrial and commercial policies, and if job creation is to be supported, politicians need to target young firms rather than small firms. These important findings from John Haltiwanger's pioneering work have been published in world-class leading academic and scientific journals.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Professor Saras Sarasvathy is the recipient of the 2022 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. Her research contributions have fundamentally changed and invigorated the conversation in the domain of entrepreneurship research. Sarasvathy's work on effectuation emphasizes how entrepreneurs operate based on available resources, think in terms of affordable loss rather than profit maximization, leverage trustworthy partnerships, and treat unforeseen contingencies as opportunities rather than problems. It has led and inspired a new generation of researchers in the quest for a better understanding of how entrepreneurs make their decisions and the unfolding of the entrepreneurial process.

  • Dynamics in the origins of technological knowledge in early firm years : Implications for new product introductions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Strategy Science. - : Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). - 2333-2050 .- 2333-2077. ; 4:3, s. 217-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We document how, in the early years of high-technology firms, the origination oftechnological knowledge started with firm founders, then shifted to other firm members, and, later on, shifted to external stakeholders. We further show that greater reliance onfounder technological knowledge is initially positively but later on negatively associatedwith new product introductions, whereas the opposite relationship holds for reliance onfirm member and external stakeholder technological knowledge. By assessing the dynamicsand effects of technological knowledge origins on new product introductions, involving founders, firm members, and external stakeholders, we offer in this paper newempirical and theoretical insights pertaining to the role of technological knowledge in theQ: 5 growth of high-technology firms.

  • The evolution of vertical boundaries in new high technology ventures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. - : Wiley. - 1932-4391. ; 12:3, s. 287-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We argue that interrelated processes of knowledge codification and uncertainty reduction lead to the contraction of vertical firm boundaries of new high technology ventures over time. Consistent with our arguments, we show that, over time, outsourcing of R&D is slower than outsourcing of manufacturing, while outsourcing of marketing and sales is the fastest. Further, we show heterogeneity in the pace of vertical boundary contraction, where new high technology ventures that engage in knowledge exploration and those whose founders have strong technological backgrounds exhibit slower vertical boundary contraction. Typically, the slowdown in the pace of outsourcing, once again, is the strongest for R&D and the weakest for marketing and sales.

  • Strategic knowledge creation in multinational enterprises
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The Oxford Handbook of International Business Strategy. - : Oxford University Press. - 9780191904820 - 9780198868378 ; , s. 109-132
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Unique knowledge and proprietary innovations are key to the competitive advantages on which most multinational enterprises (MNEs) are expected to base their initial international expansion. Moreover, their subsequent fortunes and survival typically depend on MNEs’ continued ability to upgrade and renew these advantages, as competition, imitation, and environmental change erode the value of existing ones. This chapter reviews key literatures around the nature, management, and effects of knowledge creation in MNEs. The chapter centers on the processes through which geographical patterns of international R&D have evolved, along with the structures, systems, and procedures through which MNEs have sought to govern and coordinate these activities. Finally, the chapter offers a summary and critique of the way that much of the inherited literature has portrayed and interpreted the strategic knowledge creation process in MNEs.

  • The Tech Cold War, the multipolarization of the world economy, and IB research
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - : Elsevier. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 32:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper first traces the evolution of the Tech Cold War to multipolarization in the context of major developments in the global economy, i.e. the ascent of China in the 21st century, antagonistic rivalry for technological supremacy between the United States and China, and the impending bifurcation of the world economy and its consequences. The paper then discusses the implications of the aforementioned developments for international business (IB) research and practice. Research topics include the Global North-South divide, nonmarket influences, government-MNE relationships, industrial policy and techno-nationalism, innovation in a multipolar world economy, the rise of middle powers, and innovation under geopolitical pressure.

  • Weathering storms : Technological pathfinding of MNCs in times of financial crisis
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper aims at generating new empirical knowledge about financial crises and their consequences for MNC technological development, thereby addressing a largely uncharted issue in the crossroads of strategy and international business. Drawing on threat-rigidity theory, we investigate how major international financial crises over the 1890-2008 period affected domestic and international technological exploration in a sample of Swedish MNCs. We find that financial crises had a negative effect on the firms’ propensity to enter into new technologies, and that the effect was, unexpectedly, symmetrical across home and foreign units of the multinational network. The results are indicative of an effect of financial crisis on technological exploration that runs through the perception of adversity and declining sales and employment, rather than changes in reported corporate profitability.
