  • Quantum Phase Transitions in Mass-Deformed ABJM Matrix Model
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 1409:9, s. Art. no. 021-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When mass-deformed ABJM theory is considered on S(3), the partition function of the theory localises and is given by a matrix model. We solve this model at large-N in the decompactification limit, where the radius of the three-sphere is taken to infinity. In this limit, the theory exhibits a rich phase structure with an infinite number of third-order quantum phase transitions accumulating at strong coupling.

  • Integrability and the AdS(3)/CFT2 correspondence
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :3, s. 058-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the AdS(3)/CFT2 correspondence for theories with 16 supercharges using the integrability approach. We construct Green-Schwarz actions for Type IIB strings on AdS(3) x S-3 x M-4 where M-4 = T-4 or S-3 x S-1 using the coset approach. These actions are based on a Z(4) automorphism of the super-coset D(2, 1; alpha) x D(2, 1; alpha)/SO(1, 2) x SO(3) x SO(3). The equations of motion admit a representation in terms of a Lax connection, showing that the system is classically integrable. We present the finite gap equations for these actions. When alpha = 0, 1/2, 1 we propose a set of quantum Bethe equations valid at all values of the coupling. The AdS(3)/CFT2 duals contain novel massless modes whose role remains to be explored.

  • Classical and quantum temperature fluctuations via holography
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study local temperature fluctuations in a 2+1 dimensional CFT on the sphere, dual to a black hole in asymptotically AdS spacetime. The fluctuation spectrum is governed by the lowest-lying hydrodynamic modes of the system whose frequency and damping rate determine whether temperature fluctuations are thermal or quantum. We calculate numerically the corresponding quasinormal frequencies and match the result with the hydrodynamics of the dual CFT at high temperature. As a by-product of our analysis we determine the appropriate boundary conditions for calculating low-lying quasinormal modes for a four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in global AdS.

  • Complete spectrum of long operators in N=4 SYM at one loop
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 0507, s. 030-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We construct the complete spectral curve for an arbitrary local operator, including fermions and covariant derivatives, of one-loop N=4 gauge theory in the thermodynamic limit. This curve perfectly reproduces the Frolov-Tseytlin limit of the full spectral curve of classical strings on AdS_5xS^5 derived in hep-th/0502226. To complete the comparison we introduce stacks, novel bound states of roots of different flavors which arise in the thermodynamic limit of the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations. We furthermore show the equivalence of various types of Bethe equations for the underlying su(2,2|4) superalgebra, in particular of the type "Beauty" and "Beast".

    • We compare quantum corrections to semiclassical spinning strings in AdS(5)xS(5) to one-loop anomalous dimensions in N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory. The latter are computed using the reduced (Landau-Lifshitz) sigma model and with the help of the Bethe ansatz. The results of all three approaches are in remarkable agreement with each other. As a byproduct we establish the relationship between linear instabilities in the Landau-Lifshitz model and analyticity properties of the Bethe ansatz.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0550-3213. ; 717:1-2, s. 137-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the renormalization of gauge invariant operators in large Nc QCD. We compute the complete matrix of anomalous dimensions to leading order in the 't Hooft coupling and study its eigenvalues. Thinking of the mixing matrix as the Hamiltonian of a generalized spin chain we find a large integrable sector consisting of purely gluonic operators constructed with self-dual field strengths and an arbitrary number of derivatives. This sector contains the true ground state of the spin chain and all the gapless excitations above it. The ground state is essentially the anti-ferromagnetic ground state of a XXX1 spin chain and the excitations carry either a chiral spin quantum number with relativistic dispersion relation or an anti-chiral one with non-relativistic dispersion relation.

  • The Algebraic Curve of Classical Superstrings on AdS_5xS^5
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Communications in Mathematical Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0010-3616 .- 1432-0916. ; 263, s. 659-710
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the monodromy of the Lax connection for classical IIB superstrings on AdS_5xS^5. For any solution of the equations of motion we derive a spectral curve of degree 4+4. The curve consists purely of conserved quantities, all gauge degrees of freedom have been eliminated in this form. The most relevant quantities of the solution, such as its energy, can be expressed through certain holomorphic integrals on the curve. This allows for a classification of finite gap solutions analogous to the general solution of strings in flat space. The role of fermions in the context of the algebraic curve is clarified. Finally, we derive a set of integral equations which reformulates the algebraic curve as a Riemann-Hilbert problem. They agree with the planar, one-loop N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory proving the complete agreement of spectra in this approximation.

  • Rigorous test of non-conformal holography : Wilson loops in N=2(*) theory
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • N - 2* gauge theory in four space-time dimensions arises as a deformation of the parent N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory under which its hypermultiplet acquires a mass. This theory, on the one hand, has a known supergravity dual and on the other hand is amenable to localization. We explain, using localization, a dynamical selection of the supergravity Coulomb branch vacuum at large N. We also demonstrate that large Wilson loops obey perimeter law, again finding exact match between direct field-theory calculations and string theory. Additionally, we compute free energy at large 't Hooft coupling.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One-point functions of certain non-protected scalar operators in the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of world volume flux can be expressed as overlaps between Bethe eigenstates of the Heisenberg spin chain and a matrix product state. We present a closed expression of determinant form for these one-point functions, valid for any value of k. The determinant formula factorizes into the k = 2 result times a k-dependent pre-factor. Making use of the transfer matrix of the Heisenberg spin chain we recursively relate the matrix product state for higher even and odd k to the matrix product state for k = 2 and k = 3 respectively. We furthermore find evidence that the matrix product states for k = 2 and k = 3 are related via a ratio of Baxter's Q-operators. The general k formula has an interesting thermodynamical limit involving a non-trivial scaling of k, which indicates that the match between string and field theory one-point functions found for chiral primaries might be tested for non-protected operators as well. We revisit the string computation for chiral primaries and discuss how it can be extended to non-protected operators.

Conformal gauge for the corresponding minimal surface in AdS(5) x S-5 is singular and we show that an IR anomaly associated with the divergence in the conformal factor removes previously reported discrepancy with the exact field -theory result. We also carefully check conformal anomaly cancellation and recalculate fluctuation determinants by directly evaluting phaseshifts for all the fluctuation modes.

We compute expectation values of Wilson loops in k-symmetric and antisymmetric representations of the SU(N) gauge group in this theory and show that the same phenomenon that causes the phase transitions at finite coupling leads to a non-analytic dependence of Wilson loops on k/N when the coupling is strictly infinite, thus making the higher-representation Wilson loops ideal holographic probes of the non-trivial phase structure of SYM*.

  • Non-conformal gauge/string duality : A rigorous case study
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The gauge/string duality, a.k.a. the holographic principle is a profound assertion that emerged from string theory. It relates strongly-coupled gauge theories to weakly coupled string theories living in a higher-dimensional curved geometry. Nevertheless, it is a conjecture, and only a few instances of its more concrete form, the AdS/CFT correspondence, are well-understood. The most well-studied example is the duality between N=4 SYM, which is a CFT, and type IIB string theory in AdS5xS5 background. Generalization to less symmetric cases is a must, and the next logical step is to add a mass scale to N=4 SYM, therefore breaking its conformal symmetry and leading to N=2* SYM, the theory we study in this thesis. It is supersymmetric enough to employ the powerful localization method that reduces its partition function to a matrix model. We will see that the mass scale causes non-trivial phase structures in its vacuum configuration, visible in the holographic regime. We will probe them using Wilson loops in different representations of the gauge group. On the other hand, the dual supergravity background was derived by Pilch-Warner, making N=2* theory an explicitly testable non-conformal holographic case, which is a rare example. We will prove that the duality works for the dual observables (string action, D-branes) we managed to compute, even at a quantum-level.

    • By considering a Gaussian truncation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills, we derive a set of Dyson equations that account for the ladder diagram contribution to connected correlators of circular Wilson loops. We consider different numbers of loops, with different relative orientations. We show that the Dyson equations admit a spectral representation in terms of eigenfunctions of a Schrodinger problem, whose classical limit describes the strong coupling limit of the ladder resummation. We also verify that in supersymmetric cases the exact solution to the Dyson equations reproduces known matrix model results.

    • Abstract: We calculate planar tree level one-point functions of non-protected operators in the defect conformal field theory dual to the D3-D5 brane system with k units of the world volume flux. Working in the operator basis of Bethe eigenstates of the Heisenberg XXX1/2 spin chain we express the one-point functions as overlaps of these eigenstates with a matrix product state. For k = 2 we obtain a closed expression of determinant form for any number of excitations, and in the case of half-filling we find a relation with the Néel state. In addition, we present a number of results for the limiting case k → ∞.

  • An Exploration of Q-Systems : From Spin Chains to Low-Dimensional AdS/CFT
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The discovery of integrability in the planar limit of the AdS5/CFT4 correspondence has led to impressive progress in the study of string theory and four-dimensional N=4 Super-Yang-Mills. In particular, with the formulation of the Quantum Spectral Curve (QSC) the spectral problem is now solved. The QSC has demonstrated its versatility and usefulness in various other applications, including the study of Wilson lines, conformal bootstrap, and the calculation of structure constants. It would be highly desirable to extend the QSC from AdS5/CFT4 to other instances of the AdS/CFT correspondence, a program so far only fully completed for AdS4/CFT3. Achieving this objective requires a solid understanding of the foundation of the QSC, a so-called analytic Q-system. In this thesis and the included papers, we investigate Q-systems and their algebraic and analytic properties. Inspired by the ODE/IM correspondence we propose Q-systems that encode the conserved charges of integrable models with a simply-laced symmetry algebra. In particular, for the case of D(r) a powerful parameterization of the Q-system using pure spinors is employed to efficiently solve compact rational spin chains and find T-functions solving Hirota equations. The extension from D(r) to the non-simply laced algebra B(2)/C(2) is explained and detailed. While many features are similar the relation between the symmetry of the Q-system and that of the integrable model becomes more intricate. By introducing a new method dubbed Monodromy Bootstrap we construct new Quantum Spectral Curves based on gl(2|2). In particular, one curve is conjectured to describe planar string theory on AdS3 with pure RR-flux. We solve the curve in a weak coupling limit both analytically and numerically. We also discuss the problem of finding the eigenvalue spectrum of operators on the squashed seven-sphere coming from the compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity. These eigenvalues are of importance for the mass spectrum of fields in AdS4.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 0311, s. 063-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a semiclassical multiwrapped circular string pulsating on S5, whose center of mass has angular momentum J on an S3 subspace. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we argue that the one-loop anomalous dimension of the dual operator is a simple rational function of J/L, where J is the R-charge and L is the bare dimension of the operator. We then reproduce this result directly from a super Yang-Mills computation, where we make use of the integrability of the one-loop system to set up an integral equation that we solve. We then verify the results of Frolov and Tseytlin for circular rotating strings with R-charge assignment (J',J',J). In this case we solve for an integral equation found in the O(−1) matrix model when J'<J and the O(+1) matrix model if J'>J. The latter region starts at J' = L/2 and continues down, but an apparent critical point is reached at J' = 4J. We argue that the critical point is just an artifact of the Bethe ansatz and that the conserved charges of the underlying integrable model are analytic for all J' and that the results from the O(−1) model continue onto the results of the O(+1) model.

  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this licentiate thesis, we provide the context and background for our work One-loop algebras and fixed flow trajectories in adjoint multi-scalar gauge theory (published in JHEP) on the renormalization group flow for a multi-scalar SU(N) gauge theory. The background consists of a description of renormalization group flow, with a focus on beta functions andhow to find fixed points, and multi-scalar theories. In the article we perform one-loop betafunction calculations in an adjoint, massless, multi-scalar Yang-Mills theory with a quartic scalar interaction, in four dimensions and at large N. We calculate the coupled renormalization group flows for this theory using an algebraic description we develop. The results show that to one-loop order real fixed points in the parameter space of the scalar coupling and gauge coupling do not occur.

We first identify this overlap with a partial version of reflecting-boundary domain-wall partition function, and then derive various determinant representations for off-shell and on-shell Bethe states.

  • On string integrability : A journey through the two-dimensional hidden symmetries in the AdS/CFT dualities
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of the main topics in the modern String Theory are the conjectured string/gauge (AdS/CFT) dualities. Proving such conjectures is extremely difficult since the gauge and string theory perturbative regimes do not overlap. In this perspective, the discovery of infinitely many conserved charges, i.e. the integrability, in the planar AdS/CFT has allowed us to reach immense progresses in understanding and confirming the duality. The first part of this thesis is focused on the gravity side of the AdS5/CFT4 duality: we investigate the quantum integrability of the type IIB superstring on AdS5 x S5. In the pure spinor formulation we analyze the operator algebra by computing the operator product expansion of the Maurer-Cartan currents at the leading order in perturbation theory. With the same approach at one loop order, we show the path-independence of the monodromy matrix which implies the charge conservation law, strongly supporting the quantum integrability of the string sigma-model. We also verify that the Lax pair field strength remains well-defined at one-loop order being free from UV divergences. The same string sigma-model is analyzed in the Green-Schwarz formalism in the near-flat-space (NFS) limit. Such a limit remarkably simplifies the string world-sheet action but still leaving interesting physics. We use the NFS truncation to show the factorization of the world-sheet S-matrix at one-loop order. This property defines a two-dimensional field theory as integrable: it is the manifestation of the higher conserved charges. Hence, we have explicitly checked their presence at quantum level. The second part is dedicated to the AdS4/CFT3 duality: in particular the type IIA superstring on AdS4 x CP3. We compute the leading quantum corrections to the string energies for string configurations with a large but yet finite angular momentum on CP3 and show that they match the conjectured all-loop Bethe Ansatz equations.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 50:39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the null dipole deformation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory, which is an example of a potentially solvable 'dipole CFT': a theory that is non-local along a null direction, has non-relativistic conformal invariance along the remaining ones, and is holographically dual to a Schrodinger space-time. We initiate the field-theoretical study of the spectrum in this model by using integrability inherited from the parent theory. The dipole deformation corresponds to a nondiagonal Drinfeld-Reshetikhin twist in the spin chain picture, which renders the traditional Bethe ansatz inapplicable from the very beginning. We use instead the Baxter equation supplemented with nontrivial asymptotics, which gives the full 1-loop spectrum in the sl(2) sector. We show that anomalous dimensions of long gauge theory operators perfectly match the string theory prediction, providing a quantitative test of Schrodinger holography.

    • We discuss the AdS/CFT duality from the perspective of integrable systems and establish a direct relationship between the dimension of single trace local operators composed of two types of scalar fields in = 4 super Yang-Mills and the energy of their dual semiclassical string states in AdS5 × S5. The anomalous dimensions can be computed using a set of Bethe equations, which for ``long'' operators reduces to a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We develop a unified approach to the long wavelength Bethe equations, the classical ferromagnet and the classical string solutions in the SU(2) sector and present a general solution, governed by complex curves endowed with meromorphic differentials with integer periods. Using this solution we compute the anomalous dimensions of these long operators up to two loops and demonstrate that they agree with string-theory predictions.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 124:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We initiate a systematic, non-perturbative study of the large-N expansion in the two-dimensional SU(N) x SU(N) principal Chiral model (PCM). Starting with the known infinite-N solution for the ground state at fixed chemical potential, we devise an iterative procedure to solve the Bethe ansatz equations order by order in 1/N. The first few orders, which we explicitly compute, reveal a systematic enhancement pattern at strong coupling calling for the near-threshold resummation of the large-N expansion. The resulting double-scaling limit bears striking similarities to the c = 1 noncritical string theory and suggests that the double-scaled PCM is dual to a noncritical string with a (2 + 1)-dimensional target space where an additional dimension emerges dynamically from the SU(N) Dynkin diagram.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the explicit solution for the vacuum state of the two-dimensional SU(N) principal chiral model at large N for an arbitrary set of chemical potentials and any interaction strength, a unique result of such kind for an asymptotically free quantum field theory. The solution matches one-loop perturbative calculation at weak coupling, and in the opposite strong-coupling regime exhibits an emergent spacial dimension from the continuum limit of the SU(N) Dynkin diagram.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the AdS5 × S5 sigma-model truncated to the near-flat-space limit to two-loops in perturbation theory. In addition to extending previously known one-loop results to the full SU(2|2)2 S-matrix we calculate the two-loop correction to the dispersion relation and then compute the complete two-loop S-matrix. The result of the perturbative calculation can be compared with the appropriate limit of the conjectured S-matrix for the full theory and complete agreement is found.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We calculate the S-matrix in the gauge-fixed sigma-model on AdS(5) x S-5 to the leading order in perturbation theory, and analyze how supersymmetry is realized on the scattering states. A mild nonlocality of the supercharges implies that their action on multi-particle states does not follow the Leibniz rule, which is replaced by a nontrivial coproduct. The plane wave symmetry algebra is thus naturally enhanced to a Hopf algebra. This structure mirrors that of the large't Hooft coupling expansion of the S-matrix for the spin chain in the dual super-Yang-Mills theory.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The encoding of all possible sets of Bethe equations for a spin chain with SU(N vertical bar M) symmetry into a QQ-system calls for an expression of spin chain overlaps entirely in terms of Q-functions. We take a significant step towards deriving such a universal formula in the case of overlaps between Bethe eigenstates and integrable boundary states, of relevance for AdS/dCFT, by determining the transformation properties of the overlaps under fermionic as well as bosonic dualities which allows us to move between any two descriptions of the spin chain encoded in the QQ-system. An important part of our analysis involves introducing a suitable regularization for singular Bethe root configurations.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A D3-D5 intersection gives rise to a defect CFT, wherein the rank of the gauge group jumps by k units across a domain wall. The one-point functions of local operators in this set-up map to overlaps between on-shell Bethe states in the underlying spin chain and a boundary state representing the D5 brane. Focussing on the k = 1 case, we extend the construction to gluonic and fermionic sectors, which was prohibitively difficult for k > 1. As a byproduct, we test an all-loop proposal for the one-point functions in the su(2) sector at the half-wrapping order of perturbation theory.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 2021:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The psu(2, 2|4) integrable super spin chain underlying the AdS/CFT correspondence has integrable boundary states which describe set-ups where k D3-branes get dissolved in a probe D5-brane. Overlaps between Bethe eigenstates and these boundary states encode the one-point functions of conformal operators and are expressed in terms of the superdeterminant of the Gaudin matrix that in turn depends on the Dynkin diagram of the symmetry algebra. The different possible Dynkin diagrams of super Lie algebras are related via fermionic dualities and we determine how overlap formulae transform under these dualities. As an application we show how to consistently move between overlap formulae obtained for k = 1 from different Dynkin diagrams.

    • We consider the defect CFT defined by a ’t Hooft line embedded in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory. By explicitly quantizing around the given background we exactly reproduce a prediction from S-duality for the correlators between the ’t Hooft line and chiral primaries in the bulk and pave the way for higher loop analyses for non-protected operators. Furthermore, we demonstrate at the leading perturbative order that correlators between the ’t Hooft line and non-protected bulk operators can be efficiently computed using integrability. As a byproduct we find new integrable overlaps in sl (2) spin chains in different representations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The D3-D5 probe-brane system is holographically dual to a defect CFT which is known to be integrable. The evidence comes mainly from the study of correlation functions at weak coupling. In the present work we shed light on the emergence of integrability on the string theory side. We do so by constructing the double row transfer matrix which is conserved when the appropriate boundary conditions are imposed. The corresponding reflection matrix turns out to be dynamical and depends both on the spectral parameter and the string embedding coordinates.

  • Linking Chains Together : String Bits and the Bethe Ansatz
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part we focus mainly on certain aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The AdS/CFT correspondence is a proposed duality between Type IIB superstring theory on AdS5 x S5 and N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In the BMN limit string states located in the center of AdS5 rotate quickly around the equator of the S5 and correspond, in the dual theory, to operators constructed as long chains of sub-operators. This structure of the operators can be formulated as a spin chain and by using the Bethe ansatz their properties can be obtained by solving a set of Bethe equations. Having infinitely many sub-operators, there are methods for solving the Bethe equations in certain sectors. In paper III finite size corrections to the anomalous dimensions in the SU(2) sector are calculated to leading order.Inspired by the chain structure of the corresponding operators, the theory of string bits treats the strings as a discrete sets of points. This theory suffers from the problem of fermion doubling, a general pathology of fermions on a lattice. In paper II we show how to adjust the theory in order to avoid this problem and, in fact, use the fermion doubling to our advantage. The second part of the thesis studies the low energy behaviour of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in 4 space-time dimensions. In paper I we perform numerical calculations on an effective action for this theory. We propose the existence of a knotted trajectory within the dynamics of this effective action.

  • Precision matching of circular Wilson loops and strings in AdS(5) x S-5
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : SPRINGER. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous attempts to match the exact N = 4 super Yang-Mills expression for the expectation value of the 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loop with the semiclassical AdS(5) x S-5 string theory prediction were not successful at the first subleading order. There was a missing prefactor similar to lambda(-3/4) which could be attributed to the unknown normalization of the string path integral measure. Here we resolve this problem by computing the ratio of the string partition functions corresponding to the circular Wilson loop and the special 1/4-supersymmetric latitude Wilson loop. The fact that the latter has a trivial expectation value in the gauge theory allows us to relate the prefactor to the contribution of the three zero modes of the "transverse" fluctuation operator in the 5-sphere directions.

  • Holographic Wilson Loops : Quantum String Corrections
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The gauge-string duality has been one of the most exciting areas in theoretical physics as it connects strongly coupled field theories with weakly interacting strings. The present thesis concerns the study of Wilson loops in this correspondence. Wilson loops are observables arising in many physical situations like the propagation of particles in gauge fields, the problem of confinement, etc. In the gauge-string correspondence these observables have a known physical description at both sides, making them ideal probes for the duality. Remarkable progress from localization has lead to predictions at all orders in the coupling for certain Wilson loop configurations in supersymmetric field theories. Being the string theory weakly interacting, in principle we can use perturbation theory to calculate the corresponding quantities. However, current string calculations have only been successful at leading order and in rare cases, next to leading order. At next to leading order the difficulties encountered include divergences, ambiguous boundary conditions, mismatch with field theory results, etc. The research presented in this thesis aims at a better understanding of these issues. The first calculation presented here concerns the Wilson line in N=2*, a massive deformation of N=4 SYM. The string theory dual to this configuration is a straight line in the type IIB Pilch-Warner background. Using techniques for functional determinants, we computed the 1-loop string partition function obtaining perfect matching with localization. This constitutes a first test of the correspondence at the quantum level for nonconformal theories. The second calculation in this thesis corresponds to the ratio of the latitude and circular Wilson loops in AdS5xS5. An IR anomaly related to the singular nature of the conformal gauge is shown to solve previously found discrepancies with field theory results.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :9, s. 040-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the anomalous dimensions for scalar operators for a three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory recently proposed in arXiv:0806.1218. We show that the mixing matrix at two-loop order is that for an integrable Hamiltonian of an SU(4) spin chain with sites alternating between the fundamental and the anti-fundamental representations. We find a set of Bethe equations from which the anomalous dimensions can be determined and give a proposal for the Bethe equations to the full superconformal group of OSp(2,2 vertical bar 6).

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider two-loop anomalous dimensions for fermionic operators in the ABJM model and the ABJ model. We find the appropriate Hamiltonian and show that it is consistent with a previously predicted Bethe ansatz for the ABJM model. The difference between the ABJ and ABJM models is invisible at the two-loop level due to cancelation of parity violating diagrams. We then construct a Hamiltonian for the full two-loop OSp(6|4) spin chain by first constructing the Hamiltonian for an SL(2|1) subgroup, and then lifting to OSp(6|4). We show that this Hamiltonian is consistent with the Hamiltonian found for the fermionic operators.
