  • Boron-Rich Molybdenum Boride with Unusual Short-Range Vacancy Ordering, Anisotropic Hardness, and Superconductivity

    • Determination of the structures of materials involving more light elements such as boron-rich compounds is challenging and technically important in understanding their varied compositions and superior functionalities. Here we resolve the long-standing uncertainties in structure and composition about the highest boride (termed MoB4, Mo1-xB3, or MoB3) through the rapid formation of large sized boron-rich molybdenum boride under pressure. Using high-quality single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we reveal that boron-rich molybdenum boride with a composition of Mo0.757B3 exhibits P6(3)/mmc symmetry with a partial occupancy of 0.514 in 211 Mo sites (Mol), and direct observations reveal the short-range ordering of cation vacancies in (010) crystal planes. Large anisotropic Young's moduli and Vickers hardness are seen for Mo0.757B3, which may be attributed by its two-dimensional boron distributions. Mo0.757B3 is also found to be superconducting with a transition temperature (T-c) of 2.4 K, which was confirmed by measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Theoretical calculations suggest that the partial occupancy of Mo atoms plays a crucial role in the emergence of superconductivity.

  • A global survey on the use of the international classification of diseases codes for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease.

    • With the implementation of the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the publication of the metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) nomenclature in 2020, it is important to establish consensus for the coding of MAFLD in ICD-11. This will inform subsequent revisions of ICD-11.Using the Qualtrics XM and WJX platforms, questionnaires were sent online to MAFLD-ICD-11 coding collaborators, authors of papers, and relevant association members.A total of 890 international experts in various fields from 61 countries responded to the survey. We also achieved full coverage of provincial-level administrative regions in China. 77.1% of respondents agreed that MAFLD should be represented in ICD-11 by updating NAFLD, with no significant regional differences (77.3% in Asia and 76.6% in non-Asia, p=0.819). Over 80% of respondents agreed or somewhat agreed with the need to assign specific codes for progressive stages of MAFLD (i.e. steatohepatitis) (92.2%), MAFLD combined with comorbidities (84.1%), or MAFLD subtypes (i.e., lean, overweight/obese, and diabetic) (86.1%).This global survey by a collaborative panel of clinical, coding, health management and policy experts, indicates agreement that MAFLD should be coded in ICD-11. The data serves as a foundation for corresponding adjustments in the ICD-11 revision.

  • Advances in Tin(II)-Based Perovskite Solar Cells : From Material Physics to Device Performance

    • During the past decade, metal halide perovskites are widely studied in the field of optoelectronic materials due to their unique optical and electrical properties. Lead-based halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), in particular, currently achieve a record efficiency of 25.5%, thus showing strong potential in industrial application. However, toxicity of lead-based perovskite materials possesses great concerns to natural environment and human body. Therefore, the quest for nontoxic and eco-friendly elements to replace lead in perovskites is of great interest. Among all the element choices, tin(II) (Sn2+) is the most promising candidate. As a rising star of lead-free PSCs, Sn-based PSCs have drawn much attention and made promising progress during the past few years. While the rapid oxidation and decomposition of Sn-based perovskites result in poor stability and low efficiency of PSCs. In this review, structural, optoelectronic properties and the critical issues of Sn-based perovskite materials are analyzed. Then, a detailed discussion on the recent methods in solving critical issues of Sn-based perovskite devices, from optimization on materials physics to device performance, is also presented. Finally, remaining challenges and future perspective are given to advance the progression of Sn-based PSCs.

  • Coastal blue carbon in China as a nature-based solution toward carbon neutrality

    • To achieve the Paris Agreement, China pledged to become "Carbon Neutral" by the 2060s. In addition to massive decarbonization, this would require significant changes in ecosystems toward negative CO2 emissions. The ability of coastal blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), including mangrove, salt marsh, and seagrass meadows, to sequester large amounts of CO2 makes their conservation and restoration an important "nature-based solution (NbS)" for climate adaptation and mitigation. In this review, we examine how BCEs in China can contribute to climate mitigation. On the national scale, the BCEs in China store up to 118 Tg C across a total area of 1,440,377 ha, including over 75% as unvegetated tidal flats. The annual sedimental C burial of these BCEs reaches up to 2.06 Tg C year(-1) , of which most occurs in salt marshes and tidal flats. The lateral C flux of mangroves and salt marshes contributes to 1.17 Tg C year(-1) along the Chinese coastline. Conservation and restoration of BCEs benefit climate change mitigation and provide other ecological services with a value of $32,000 ha(-1) year(-1). The potential practices and technologies that can be implemented in China to improve BCE C sequestration, including their constraints and feasibility, are also outlined. Future directions are suggested to improve blue carbon estimates on aerial extent, carbon stocks, sequestration, and mitigation potential. Restoring and preserving BCEs would be a cost-effective step to achieve Carbon Neutral by 2060 in China despite various barriers that should be removed.

    • Understanding the fundamental principle of catalytic performance and the mechanism of multimetal-based electrocatalysts is essential for the rational design of advanced renewable energy systems. Here, highly crystalline MMMoB4 (M = Fe, Co) compounds with controllable compositions of multiple active metal atoms and polyacene-type boron networks were synthesized delicately by a one-step high-pressure technique to explore electrocatalytic selectivity and activity. CoFeMoB4 and Co2MoB4 are revealed to be highly active and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions. The mutually promotive activation of metals with amorphous clusters and ultra-small grains on the surface are responsible for the enhanced activity of CoFeMoB4. More specifically, Co and Fe coupling in CoFeMoB4 facilitates surface reconstruction into active Co hydroxide and Fe oxyhydroxide, in contrast to Co oxyhydroxide in Co2MoB4 and Fe oxides in Fe2MoB4. Dissolving Mo may provide potential space for adsorbing hydroxyl, and the optimized electronic structure with boron is mainly responsible for the long-term durability. In contrast, Mo atoms are responsible for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties, and the optimized d-band center and density of states at the Fermi level make Co2MoB4 a superior HER catalyst. Our findings provide insight into distinguishing the catalytic pathway of multi-metal borides with improved OER activity and different roles of Mo and Co/Fe in the HER and OER.

  • Infection probability under different air distribution patterns

    • Infectious diseases have caused significant physical harm to humans as well as enormous economic losses over the years. Effective ventilation and distribution of fresh air could help to reduce indoor cross-infection. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used in this paper to investigate airborne transmission with seven different air distribution methods. The revised Wells-Riley model, which took into account the non-uniform air distribution generated with the methods, was used to calculate the infection probability in an office room shared by ten occupants for 4 h. One of the occupants was an infector. The significance of the infector's location was studied. The obtained infection probability was compared to that obtained in the case of complete air mixing, which is uncommon in practice. Under specified conditions of this study, personalized ventilation (PV) performed the best in terms of preventing cross-infection, followed by displacement ventilation (DV), impinging jet ventilation (IJV), stratum ventilation (SV) and wall attachment ventilation (WAV). The number of infected occupants was reduced below the number obtained under the complete mixing assumption by using these air distribution methods. Mixing ventilation (MV) and diffuse ceiling ventilation (DCV) exhibited the worst performance. In comparison to the case of complete mixing the infection probability for seven out of nine susceptible occupants was higher with MV and for all occupants in the case of DCV. In SV, the position of the infector had a clear impact on the infection probability of susceptible individuals. WAV may perform better in practice if the system is well designed. The location of the exhaust outlets had a significant impact on the infection probability for DCV.

    • The construction process is a dynamic one, and the complexity of the working conditions and the high level of uncertainty make the construction industry the third most dangerous industry after mining and agriculture. And since the construction industry is vital to the development of a country, safety during construction is of particular importance. A great deal of research, studies and practices have been conducted to reduce potential risks and improve worker efficiency during the construction process. In recent years, with the rapid development of cognitive neuroscience and the integration of medical technology, various wearable monitoring devices have been widely used in the field of building construction for real-time monitoring of workers’ physical and mental conditions. Among them, the application of EEG (electroencephalogram) in the building construction process enables researchers to gain insight into the physical and mental state of construction workers while performing construction tasks. This paper introduces EEG technology and portable EEG monitoring equipment and summarizes its application in monitoring workers’ adverse reactions (emotion, fatigue, psychological burden, and vigilance) and construction hazard identification during the process of construction in recent years, which provides future EEG research in the field of building construction and construction site safety management.
