  • Different Doping Behaviors of Silicon in Zinc Blende and Wurtzite GaAs Nanowires : Implications for Crystal-Phase Device Design
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Nano Materials. - 2574-0970. ; 6:13, s. 11465-11471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crystal-phase engineering between zinc blende (ZB) and wurtzite (WZ) structures is becoming an important method in designing unique optoelectronic and electronic semiconductor devices. Doping to engineer their electric properties is thus of critical importance, but a direct experimental comparison in doping these two crystal structures is still missing. Nanowires (NWs) allow the coexistence of both structures due to their special growth mode. The differences in dopant incorporation between the two phases are studied here in GaAs NW shells that are coherently grown around the NWs, hence maintaining the crystal structure of the core. The Si dopant is observed to have a higher incorporation efficiency into the WZ structure due to a 2 times lower incorporation energy compared with that of the ZB structure. Besides, it can also be predicted that Si is more inclined toward Ga sites in both structures. Indeed, the As-site doping energy of the WZ structure is several orders of magnitude higher than that of Ga sites, allowing a lower doping compensation effect. This work provides useful information for doping control and hence designing crystal-phase devices.

  • Association between accelerometer-measured amplitude of rest-activity rhythm and future health risk : a prospective cohort study of the UK Biobank
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Lancet Healthy Longevity. - 2666-7568. ; 4:5, s. e200-e210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The health effects of rest-activity rhythm are of major interest to public health, but its associations with health outcomes remain elusive. We aimed to examine the associations between accelerometer-measured rest-activity rhythm amplitude and health risks among the general UK population.METHODS: We did a prospective cohort analysis of UK Biobank participants aged 43-79 years with valid wrist-worn accelerometer data. Low rest-activity rhythm amplitude was defined as the first quintile of relative amplitude; all other quintiles were classified as high rest-activity rhythm amplitude. Outcomes of interest were defined using International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision codes and consisted of incident cancer and cardiovascular, infectious, respiratory, and digestive diseases, and all-cause and disease-specific (cardiovascular, cancer, and respiratory) mortality. Participants with a current diagnosis of any outcome of interest were excluded. We assessed the associations between decreased rest-activity rhythm amplitude and outcomes using Cox proportional hazards models.FINDINGS: Between June 1, 2013, and Dec 23, 2015, 103 682 participants with available raw accelerometer data were enrolled. 92 614 participants (52 219 [56·4%] women and 40 395 [42·6%] men) with a median age of 64 years (IQR 56-69) were recruited. Median follow-up was 6·4 years (IQR 5·8-6·9). Decreased rest-activity rhythm amplitude was significantly associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases (adjusted hazard ratio 1·11 [95% CI 1·05-1·16]), cancer (1·08 [1·01-1·16]), infectious diseases (1·31 [1·22-1·41]), respiratory diseases (1·26 [1·19-1·34]), and digestive diseases (1·08 [1·03-1·14]), as well as all-cause mortality (1·54 [1·40-1·70]) and disease-specific mortality (1·73 [1·34-2·22] for cardiovascular diseases, 1·32 [1·13-1·55] for cancer, and 1·62 [1·25-2·09] for respiratory diseases). Most of these associations were not modified by age older than 65 years or sex. Among 16 accelerometer-measured rest-activity parameters, low rest-activity rhythm amplitude had the strongest or second- strongest associations with nine health outcomes.INTERPRETATION: Our results suggest that low rest-activity rhythm amplitude might contribute to major health outcomes and provide further evidence to promote risk-modifying strategies associated with rest-activity rhythm to improve health and longevity.

  • Genome-wide association meta-analysis in Chinese and European individuals identifies ten new loci associated with systemic lupus erythematosus
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 48:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE; OMIM 152700) is a genetically complex autoimmune disease. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified more than 50 loci as robustly associated with the disease in single ancestries, but genome-wide transancestral studies have not been conducted. We combined three GWAS data sets from Chinese (1,659 cases and 3,398 controls) and European (4,036 cases and 6,959 controls) populations. A meta-analysis of these studies showed that over half of the published SLE genetic associations are present in both populations. A replication study in Chinese (3,043 cases and 5,074 controls) and European (2,643 cases and 9,032 controls) subjects found ten previously unreported SLE loci. Our study provides further evidence that the majority of genetic risk polymorphisms for SLE are contained within the same regions across both populations. Furthermore, a comparison of risk allele frequencies and genetic risk scores suggested that the increased prevalence of SLE in non-Europeans (including Asians) has a genetic basis.

  • Coastal blue carbon in China as a nature-based solution toward carbon neutrality
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: INNOVATION. - 2666-6758. ; 4:5
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To achieve the Paris Agreement, China pledged to become "Carbon Neutral" by the 2060s. In addition to massive decarbonization, this would require significant changes in ecosystems toward negative CO2 emissions. The ability of coastal blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), including mangrove, salt marsh, and seagrass meadows, to sequester large amounts of CO2 makes their conservation and restoration an important "nature-based solution (NbS)" for climate adaptation and mitigation. In this review, we examine how BCEs in China can contribute to climate mitigation. On the national scale, the BCEs in China store up to 118 Tg C across a total area of 1,440,377 ha, including over 75% as unvegetated tidal flats. The annual sedimental C burial of these BCEs reaches up to 2.06 Tg C year(-1) , of which most occurs in salt marshes and tidal flats. The lateral C flux of mangroves and salt marshes contributes to 1.17 Tg C year(-1) along the Chinese coastline. Conservation and restoration of BCEs benefit climate change mitigation and provide other ecological services with a value of $32,000 ha(-1) year(-1). The potential practices and technologies that can be implemented in China to improve BCE C sequestration, including their constraints and feasibility, are also outlined. Future directions are suggested to improve blue carbon estimates on aerial extent, carbon stocks, sequestration, and mitigation potential. Restoring and preserving BCEs would be a cost-effective step to achieve Carbon Neutral by 2060 in China despite various barriers that should be removed.

  • Associations of timing of physical activity with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a prospective cohort study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing interest in the role of timing of daily behaviors in improving health. However, little is known about the optimal timing of physical activity to maximize health benefits. We perform a cohort study of 92,139 UK Biobank participants with valid accelerometer data and all-cause and cause-specific mortality outcomes, comprising over 7 years of median follow-up (638,825 person-years). Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) at any time of day is associated with lower risks for all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and cancer mortality. In addition, compared with morning group (>50% of daily MVPA during 05:00-11:00), midday-afternoon (11:00-17:00) and mixed MVPA timing groups, but not evening group (17:00-24:00), have lower risks of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. These protective associations are more pronounced among the elderly, males, less physically active participants, or those with preexisting cardiovascular diseases. Here, we show that MVPA timing may have the potential to improve public health.

  • Additive manufacturing of 18% nickel maraging steels : Defect, structure and mechanical properties: A review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science & Technology. - : Chinese Society of Metals. - 1005-0302. ; 120, s. 227-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews the latest research progress in the additive manufacturing (AM) process of 18% nickel maraging steels, which involves laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF), laser-based directed energy deposition (L-DED), and wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). The emphasis is on the defects, structure, and mechanical properties of the additive manufactured 18% nickel maraging steels. At first, this article outlines the influences of the processing parameters of AM techniques on the defects formed in the fabricated parts, in terms of the L-PBF and WAAM. The macrostructure and microstructure characteristics of as-built and heat-treated 18% nickel maraging steel are then described in detail. Later, the mechanical properties of as-built and heat-treated 18% nickel maraging steel are assessed, such as their tensile, hardness, impact toughness, and fatigue performances. Finally, future directions for work on the AM of 18% nickel maraging steel are provided.

  • Solidification structures and phases in wire arc additive manufactured C250 maraging steel
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Science and Technology. - : Sage Publications. - 0267-0836 .- 1743-2847. ; 39:5, s. 582-590
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple layers of C250 maraging steel were deposited into a single-wall structure by using wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). The microstructural characteristics of the as-deposited C250 steel, in terms of solidification structures and phases, were investigated by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that lath martensite and austenite phases are formed in the as-deposited C250 steel. Apart from these two phases, Laves phase Fe2Ti particles, which have not been reported in C250 steel, are also observed in the C250 steel produced by the WAAM process. TEM analysis does not reveal the formation of strengthening precipitates in the as-built C250 steel, which is further confirmed by hardness measurement.

  • Solution-processed solar-charging power units made of organic photovoltaic modules and asymmetric super-capacitors
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 118:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic photovoltaics with the properties of flexibility, portability, and printability are ideal candidates for low-power-consumption electronics such as the Internet of Things under indoor light conditions. In this work, an all solution-processed integrated photocapacitor (IPC) consisting of an organic photovoltaic module (OPVM) and an asymmetric super-capacitor (ASC) is demonstrated. The OPVM poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b ]dithiophene)-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1, 2-c:4,5-c ]dithiophene-4,8-dione)] (PBDB-T) : 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2 ,3 d ]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b-]-dithiophene (ITIC) with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as the top electrode delivers a high power conversion efficiency of 6.7% with a voltage of 4.3 V (1 Sun). The ASC based on PEDOT:PSS and Ti3C2Tx electrodes shows a wide operation window of 1.5 V in the aqueous electrolyte with a high energy density of 28.7 mu W h cm(-2). Consequently, the IPC achieves a high output voltage of 3 V and outstanding overall efficiency of 6.0% (45 000 lx), which shows excellent stability as the solar-charging power unit under room light (500 lx). Synergizing energy harvest and storage in a solution-processed robust, lightweight, low-cost organic IPC enables this solar-charging power unit wide potential applications in low-power-consumption portable electronics.

  • Association of lifespan reproductive duration with depression in Swedish twins : The role of hormone replacement therapy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics. - : Wiley. - 0020-7292 .- 1879-3479. ; 162:1, s. 309-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To examine the association between reproductive duration and postmenopausal depression (taking the use of hormone replacement therapy [HRT] into account). Methods: In this population-based cohort study, 11 320 postmenopausal women (mean age 63.6 years) were followed for up to 18 years. Reproductive duration was categorized into three groups: short (≤34 years), average (35–39 years), and long (≥40 years). Depression was ascertained from the Sweden National Patient Registry. Results: During the follow up, 593 (5.24%) women developed depression. In the multi-adjusted generalized estimating equation model, the odds ratios (ORs) of depression were 1.28 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05–1.55) and 1.25 (95% CI 1.01–1.55) for women with short and long reproductive durations, respectively, compared with those women with average reproductive duration. Women with a non-typical reproductive duration (≤34 or ≥40 years) who received HRT were at a higher risk of depression (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.42–2.33). There was a significant additive interaction between non-typical reproductive duration and the use of HRT on depression (attributable proportion 0.26, 95% CI 0.03–0.50).Conclusion: Women with a short or long reproductive duration, especially those with a history of HRT use, have a higher risk of depression after menopause compared with those with an average reproductive duration.

  • Associations of Insomnia With Insulin Resistance Traits : A Cross-sectional and Mendelian Randomization Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. - : Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X .- 1945-7197. ; 108:8, s. e574-e582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: Insomnia is associated with insulin resistance (IR) in observational studies; however, whether insomnia is causally associated with IR remains unestablished. Objective: This study aims to estimate the causal associations of insomnia with IR and its related traits. Methods: In primary analyses, multivariable regression (MVR) and 1-sample Mendelian randomization (1SMR) analyses were performed to estimate the associations of insomnia with IR (triglyceride-glucose index and triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [TG/HDL-C] ratio) and its related traits (glucose level, TG, and HDL-C) in the UK Biobank. Thereafter, 2-sample MR (2SMR) analyses were used to validate the findings from primary analyses. Finally, the potential mediating effects of IR on the pathway of insomnia giving rise to type 2 diabetes (T2D) were examined using a 2-step MR design. Results: Across the MVR, 1SMR, and their sensitivity analyses, we found consistent evidence suggesting that more frequent insomnia symptoms were significantly associated with higher values of triglyceride-glucose index (MVR, beta = 0.024, P < 2.00E-16; 1SMR, beta = 0.343, P < 2.00E-16), TG/HDL-C ratio (MVR, beta = 0.016, P = 1.75E-13; 1SMR, beta = 0.445, P < 2.00E-16), and TG level (MVR, beta = 0.019 log mg/dL, P < 2.00E-16, 1SMR: beta = 0.289 log mg/dL, P < 2.00E-16) after Bonferroni adjustment. Similar evidence was obtained by using 2SMR, and mediation analysis suggested that about one-quarter (25.21%) of the association between insomnia symptoms and T2D was mediated by IR.Conclusions: This study provides robust evidence supporting that more frequent insomnia symptoms are associated with IR and its related traits across different angles. These findings indicate that insomnia symptoms can be served as a promising target to improve IR and prevent subsequent T2D.

  • Association of accelerometer-derived circadian abnormalities and genetic risk with incidence of atrial fibrillation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: npj Digital Medicine. - : Springer Nature. - 2398-6352. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evidence suggests potential links between circadian rhythm and atrial fibrillation (AF). However, whether circadian disruption can predict the onset of AF in the general population remains largely unknown. We aim to investigate the association of accelerometer-measured circadian rest-activity rhythm (CRAR, the most prominent circadian rhythm in humans) with the risk of AF, and examine joint associations and potential interactions of CRAR and genetic susceptibility with AF incidence. We include 62,927 white British participants of UK Biobank without AF at baseline. CRAR characteristics, including amplitude (strength), acrophase (timing of peak activity), pseudo-F (robustness), and mesor (height), are derived by applying an extended cosine model. Genetic risk is assessed with polygenic risk scores. The outcome is the incidence of AF. During a median follow-up of 6.16 years, 1920 participants developed AF. Low amplitude [hazard ratio (HR): 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.25-1.58], delayed acrophase (HR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.10-1.39), and low mesor (HR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.21-1.52), but not low pseudo-F, are significantly associated with a higher risk of AF. No significant interactions between CRAR characteristics and genetic risk are observed. Joint association analyses reveal that participants with unfavourable CRAR characteristics and high genetic risk yield the highest risk of incident AF. These associations are robust after controlling for multiple testing and in a series of sensitivity analyses. Accelerometer-measured CRAR abnormalities, characterized by decreased strength and height, and later timing of peak activity of circadian rhythm, are associated with a higher risk of AF in the general population.

  • Association of Circadian Rest-Activity Rhythms with Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. - : Elsevier. - 0168-8227 .- 1872-8227. ; 197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIMS: To examine the associations of disrupted circadian rest-activity rhythm (CRAR) with cardiovascular diseases and mortality among people with type 2 diabetes.METHODS: A total of 3147 participants with baseline type 2 diabetes (mean age 65.21 years, 39.78% female; mean HbA1c 50.02 mmol/mol) from UK Biobank were included. The following CRAR parameters were derived from acceleration data: interdaily stability (IS), intradaily variability (IV), relative amplitude (RA), most active 10 h period onset (M10 onset), and least active 5 h period onset (L5 onset). We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the associations of CRAR with cardiovascular diseases and mortality, adjusting for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health characteristics.RESULTS: Participants in the lowest quartile of IS and RA exhibited the greatest risk of developing cardiovascular disease (IS, hazard ratio [HR]Q1 vs. Q4 1.40 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04, 1.88]; RA, HRQ1 vs. Q4 2.45 [95% CI 1.73, 3.49]). However, the association between delayed L5 onset and cardiovascular disease risk did not reach statistical significance. Additionally, we found that high IV and low RA were associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.CONCLUSION: Objectively determined CRAR disturbances may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and mortality among people with type 2 diabetes.

  • Association of depression with mortality in nationwide twins : The mediating role of dementia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European psychiatry. - : Royal College of Psychiatrists. - 0924-9338 .- 1778-3585. ; 65:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. The differential impact of depression across different periods in life on mortality remains inconclusive. We aimed to examine the association of depression that occurs at different age with all-cause mortality, and to explore the roles of dementia, as well as genetic and early-life environmental factors, in this association.Methods. From the Swedish Twin Registry, 44,919 twin individuals were followed for up to 18 years. Depression was ascertained using the National Patient Registry and categorized as early-life (<45 years), midlife (45-64 years), and late-life (>= 65 years) depression according to the age of the first diagnosis. Deaths were identified through the Cause of Death Register. Generalized estimating equation, generalized structural equation, and conditional logistic regression were used for unmatched, mediation, and co-twin matched analyses, respectively.Results. In unmatched analyses, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of mortality were 1.71 (1.46-2.00) for depression at any age, 1.72 (1.36-2.17) for early-life, 1.51 (1.19-1.90) for midlife, and 4.10 (2.02-8.34) for late-life depression. Mortality was significantly higher in individuals with late-life depression than those with earlier-life depression (p < 0.05). The mediation analysis showed that 59.83% of the depression-mortality association was mediated by dementia. No significant difference in ORs between the unmatched and co-twin matched analyses was observed (p = 0.09).Conclusions. Depression is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, and dementia mediates approximately 60% of the impact of depression on mortality in late life. Genetic and early-life environmental factors may not play a significant role in the depression-mortality association.

  • Association of life-course traumatic brain injury with dementia risk : A nationwide twin study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Alzheimer's & Dementia. - : Wiley. - 1552-5260 .- 1552-5279. ; 19:1, s. 217-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The impact of life-course traumatic brain injury (TBI) on dementia is unclear. Methods: Within the Swedish Twin Registry (STR), 35,312 dementia-free twins were followed for up to 18 years. TBI history was identified via medical records. Data were analyzed using generalized estimating equation (GEE) and conditional logistic regression. Results: In multi-adjusted GEE models, the odds ratio (OR, 95% confidence interval [CI]) of dementia was 1.27 (1.03–1.57) for TBI at any age, 1.55 (1.04–2.31) for TBI at 50 to 59 years, and 1.67 (1.12–2.49) for TBI at 60 to 69 years. Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) increased dementia risk associated with TBI at age 50 to 69 years. The ORs in GEE and conditional logistic regression did not differ significantly (P = .37).Discussion: TBI, especially between ages 50 and 69 years, is associated with an increased risk of dementia, and this is exacerbated among people with CMDs. Genetic and early-life environmental factors may not account for the TBI–dementia association.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Age and Ageing. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0002-0729 .- 1468-2834. ; 51:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: the timing of incident injurious falls at different stages of dementia diagnosis is unclear. Objectives: to identify when the occurrence of injurious falls begins to increase among individuals who are going to develop dementia, to explore the time point at which people living with dementia are at highest risk of injurious falls and to ascertain differences in fall-related factors pre- and post-dementia diagnosis.Design: this study included 2,707 participants with incident dementia and 2,707 1:1 matched (i.e. same birth year and sex) controls without dementia. Methods: dementia diagnosis and date of onset were identified from the National Patient Registry (NPR) and the Swedish Cause of Death Register following international criteria. Information on injurious falls and history of chronic disease was obtained from the NPR. Data were analysed using conditional Poisson regression and generalized estimating equation models. Results: compared with controls, the incidence of injurious falls among participants with dementia started to increase beginning 4 years pre-diagnosis (incidence rate ratio [IRR] 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.30–2.22), reaching a peak (IRR 3.73, 95% CI 3.16–4.41) in the year of dementia diagnosis. Heavy drinking, physically active and cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) were associated with incident falls among those with dementia. Conclusion: people with dementia have a higher incidence of injurious falls beginning 4 years leading up to diagnosis and peaking during the year of diagnosis. Older age, female, heavy drinking, physically active and CMDs may predict injurious falls among people with dementia.
