  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Geometry design of tethered small-molecule acceptor enables highly stable and efficient polymer solar cells

    • With the power conversion efficiency of binary polymer solar cells dramatically improved, the thermal stability of the small-molecule acceptors raised the main concerns on the device operating stability. Here, to address this issue, thiophene-dicarboxylate spacer tethered small-molecule acceptors are designed, and their molecular geometries are further regulated via the thiophene-core isomerism engineering, affording dimeric TDY-alpha with a 2, 5-substitution and TDY-beta with 3, 4-substitution on the core. It shows that TDY-alpha processes a higher glass transition temperature, better crystallinity relative to its individual small-molecule acceptor segment and isomeric counterpart of TDY-beta, and amore stablemorphology with the polymer donor. As a result, the TDY-alpha based device delivers a higher device efficiency of 18.1%, and most important, achieves an extrapolated lifetime of about 35000 hours that retaining 80% of their initial efficiency. Our result suggests that with proper geometry design, the tethered small-molecule acceptors can achieve both high device efficiency and operating stability.

  • Early-life exposure to PM2.5 constituents and childhood asthma and wheezing : Findings from China, Children, Homes, Health study

    • Background: Emerging evidence suggests that early-life (in-utero and first-year since birth) exposure to ambient PM2.5 is a risk factor for asthma onset and exacerbation among children, while the hazards caused by PM2.5 compositions remain largely unknown.Objective: To examine potential associations of early-life exposures to PM2.5 mass and its major chemical constituents with childhood asthma and wheezing.Methods: By conducting the Phase II of the China, Children, Homes, Health study, we investigated 30,325 preschool children aged 3-6 years during 2019-2020 in mainland China. Early-life exposure to PM2.5 mass and its constituents (i.e., black carbon [BC], organic matter [OM], nitrate, ammonium, sulfate) were calculated based on monthly estimates at a 1 km x 1 km resolution from satellite-based models. We adopted a novel quantile-based g-computation approach to assess the effect of a mixture of PM2.5 constituents on childhood asthma/wheezing.Results: The average PM2.5 concentrations during in-utero and the first year since birth were 64.7 +/- 10.6 and 61.8 +/- 10.5 mu g/m(3), respectively. Early-life exposures to a mixture of major PM2 center dot 5 constituents were significantly associated with increased risks of asthma and wheezing, while no evident compositions-wheezing associations were found in the first year. Each quintile increases in all five PM2.5 components exposures in utero was accordingly associated with an odds ratio of 1.18 [95% confidence interval: 1.07-1.29] for asthma and 1.08 [1.01-1.16] for wheezing. BC, OM and SO42- contributed more to risks of asthma and wheezing than the other PM2.5 constituents during early life, wherein the effects of BC were only observed during pregnancy. Sex subgroup analyses suggested stronger associations among girls of first-year exposures to PM2.5 components with childhood asthma.Conclusion: Early-life exposures to ambient PM2.5, particularly compositions of BC, OM and SO42-, are associated with an increased risk of childhood asthma.

  • Investigation of Triphenylamine (TPA)-Based Metal Complexes and Their Application in Perovskite Solar Cells

    • Triphenylamine-based metal complexes were designed and synthesized via coordination to Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) using their respective acetate salts as the starting materials. The resulting metal complexes exhibit more negative energy levels (vs vacuum) as compared to 2,2', 7,7'-tetrakis(N, N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD), high hole extraction efficiency, but low hole mobilities and conductivities. Application of dopants typically used for Spiro-OMeTAD was not successful, indicating a more complicated mechanism of partial oxidation besides the redox potential. However, utilization as hole-transport material was successful, giving a highest efficiency of 11.1% under AM 1.5G solar illumination.

  • Organic Salts as p-Type Dopants for Efficient LiTFSI-Free Perovskite Solar Cells

    • Despite the ubiquity and importance of organic hole-transport materials in photovoltaic devices, their intrinsic low conductivity remains a drawback. Thus, chemical doping is an indispensable solution to this drawback and is essentially always required. The most widely used p-type dopant, FK209, is a cobalt coordination complex. By reducing Co(III) to Co(II), Spiro-OMeTAD becomes partially oxidized, and the film conductivity is initially increased. In order to further increase the conductivity, the hygroscopic co-dopant LiTFSI is typically needed. However, lithium salts are normally quite hygroscopic, and thus, water absorption has been suggested as a significant reason for perovskite degradation and therefore limited device stability. In this work, we report a LiTFSI-free doping process by applying organic salts in relatively high amounts. The film conductivity and morphology have been studied at different doping amounts. The resulting solar cell devices show comparable power conversion efficiencies to those based on conventional LiTFSI-doped Spiro-OMeTAD but show considerably better long-term device stability in an ambient atmosphere.

  • Impact of AlphaFold on structure prediction of protein complexes: The CASP15-CAPRI experiment

    • We present the results for CAPRI Round 54, the 5th joint CASP-CAPRI protein assembly prediction challenge. The Round offered 37 targets, including 14 homodimers, 3 homo-trimers, 13 heterodimers including 3 antibody-antigen complexes, and 7 large assemblies. On average similar to 70 CASP and CAPRI predictor groups, including more than 20 automatics servers, submitted models for each target. A total of 21 941 models submitted by these groups and by 15 CAPRI scorer groups were evaluated using the CAPRI model quality measures and the DockQ score consolidating these measures. The prediction performance was quantified by a weighted score based on the number of models of acceptable quality or higher submitted by each group among their five best models. Results show substantial progress achieved across a significant fraction of the 60+ participating groups. High-quality models were produced for about 40% of the targets compared to 8% two years earlier. This remarkable improvement is due to the wide use of the AlphaFold2 and AlphaFold2-Multimer software and the confidence metrics they provide. Notably, expanded sampling of candidate solutions by manipulating these deep learning inference engines, enriching multiple sequence alignments, or integration of advanced modeling tools, enabled top performing groups to exceed the performance of a standard AlphaFold2-Multimer version used as a yard stick. This notwithstanding, performance remained poor for complexes with antibodies and nanobodies, where evolutionary relationships between the binding partners are lacking, and for complexes featuring conformational flexibility, clearly indicating that the prediction of protein complexes remains a challenging problem.

  • DDR1/2 enhance KIT activation and imatinib resistance of primary and secondary KIT mutants in gastrointestinal stromal tumors

    • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are predominantly initiated by KIT mutations. In this study, we observed that discoidin domain receptors 1 and 2 (DDR1 and DDR2) exhibited high expression in GISTs, were associated with KIT, and enhanced the activation of both wild-type KIT and primary KIT mutants. Inhibition of DDR1/2 led to a reduction in the activation of KIT and its downstream signaling molecules, ultimately impairing GIST cell survival and proliferation in vitro. Consequently, treatment of mice carrying germline KIT/V558A mutation with DDR1/2 inhibitor significantly impeded tumor growth, and the combined use of DDR1/2 inhibitor and imatinib, the first-line targeted therapeutic agent for GISTs, markedly enhanced tumor growth suppression. In addition, DDR1/2 inhibition resulted in decreased KIT expression, while KIT inhibition led to upregulation of DDR1/2 expression in GISTs. The presence of DDR1/2 also decreased the sensitivity of wild-type KIT or primary KIT mutants to imatinib, indicating a possible role for DDR1/2 in promoting GIST survival during KIT-targeted therapy. The development of drug-resistant secondary KIT mutations is a primary factor contributing to GIST recurrence following targeted therapy. Similar to primary KIT mutants, DDR1/2 can associate with and enhance the activation of secondary KIT mutants, further diminishing their sensitivity to imatinib. In summary, our data demonstrate that DDR1/2 contribute to KIT activation in GISTs and strengthen resistance to imatinib for both primary and secondary KIT mutants, providing a rationale for further exploration of DDR1/2 targeting in GIST treatment.

  • Synthesis of chiral TiO2 nanofibre with electron transition-based optical activity

    • The optical chirality induced at the absorption bands due to electronic exciton coupling of the transition dipole moments between chromophores in close proximity is ubiquitous in helical organic materials. However, inorganic materials with optical activity resulting from electronic transitions have not been explored. Here we report the synthesis of chiral TiO2 fibres via transcription of the helical structure of amino acid-derived amphiphile fibres through coordination bonding interactions between the organics and the TiO2 source. Upon calcination, the as-prepared amorphous TiO2 double-helical fibres with a pitch length of ~100 nm were converted to double-helical crystalline fibres with stacks of anatase nanocrystals in an epitaxial helical relationship. Both the amorphous and anatase crystalline helical TiO2 fibres exhibited optical response to circularly polarized light at the absorption edge around ~350 nm. This was attributed to the semiconductor TiO2-based electronic transitions from the valence band to the conduction band under an asymmetric electric field.

    • The safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is paramount for all users. One effective way to improve safety is incorporating heat-resistant polyimide (PI) separators, which can increase the thermal stability of batteries and minimize the risk of thermal runaway. However, preparing PI separators with both an ideal pore structure and adequate mechanical properties remains as a challenge. Here, we introduced decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) into PI and produced a hybrid separator with an outstanding pore structure and excellent mechanical properties. Aided with DBDPE, the separators attain a well-defined and uniform pore size (20 nm), while demonstrating high porosities (78%) through phase inversion processes. Owing to the addition of CNFs, the mechanical properties of the separators were significantly improved, with a tensile strength of 25.4 MPa and an elastic modulus of 550.1 MPa. Moreover, the separators demonstrate high ion conductivity (0.45 mS cm-1), excellent thermal-dimensional stability (up to 200 degrees C), remarkable flame retardancy, and outstanding electrolyte wettability. At room temperature, the batteries with the separators demonstrate comparable performance with those of polypropylene (PP) separators. However, when subjected to thermal shock treatments, the batteries with the separators outperform those with PP, showcasing their superior performance. The work introduces a novel strategy for designing high-performance separators, thereby paving the way for advancements in the fabrication of LIBs with enhanced safety features. A porous, robust, and thermally stable hybrid separator was developed to solve the dilemma between desired pore structures and mechanical properties in polyimide separators by introducing decabromodiphenyl ethane and cellulose nanofibers.

    • Human mobility behavior is far from random, and its indicators follow non-Gaussian distributions. Predicting human mobility has the potential to enhance location-based services, intelligent transportation systems, urban computing, and so forth. In this paper, we focus on improving the prediction accuracy of non-Gaussian mobility data by constructing a hybrid Markov-based model, which takes the non-Gaussian and spatio-temporal characteristics of real human mobility data into account. More specifically, we (1) estimate the order of the Markov chain predictor by adapting it to the length of frequent individual mobility patterns, instead of using a fixed order, (2) consider the time distribution of mobility patterns occurrences when calculating the transition probability for the next location, and (3) employ the prediction results of users with similar trajectories if the recent context has not been previously seen. We have conducted extensive experiments on real human trajectories collected during 21 days from 3474 individuals in an urban Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, and the results demonstrate that the proposed model for non-Gaussian mobility data can help predicting people’s future movements with more than 56% accuracy.

    • A new crosslinked polymer, called P65, with appropriate photo-electrochemical, opto-electronic, and thermal properties, has been designed and synthesized as an efficient, dopant-free, hole-transport material (HTM) for n-i-p type planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). P65 is obtained from a low-cost and easily synthesized spiro[fluorene-9,9′-xanthene]-3′,6′-diol (SFX-OH)-based monomer X65 through a free-radical polymerization reaction. The combination of a three-dimensional (3D) SFX core unit, hole-transport methoxydiphenylamine group, and crosslinked polyvinyl network provides P65 with good solubility and excellent film-forming properties. By employing P65 as a dopant-free hole-transport layer in conventional n-i-p type PSCs, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 17.7% is achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a 3D, crosslinked, polymeric dopant-free HTM has been reported for use in conventional n-i-p type PSCs. This study provides a new strategy for the future development of a 3D crosslinked polymeric dopant-free HTM with a simple synthetic route and low-cost for commercial, large-scale applications in future PSCs.

    • Two novel dopant-free hole-transport materials (HTMs) with spiro[dibenzo[c,h]xanthene-7,9-fluorene] (SDBXF) skeletons were prepared via facile synthesis routes. A power conversion efficiency of 15.9% in perovskite solar cells is attained by using one HTM without dopants, which is much higher than undoped Spiro-OMeTAD-based devices (10.8%). The crystal structures of both new HTMs were systematically investigated to reveal the reasons behind such differences in performance and to indicate the design principles of more advanced HTMs.

    • The integrated assessments of indoor and outdoor ventilation are still rare so far. As a novelty, this paper aims to quantify the influence of street aspect ratios (building height/street width, H/W = 0.5–5) and window sizes (1 m × 1 m, 1.5 m × 1.5 m) on indoor-outdoor ventilation in two-dimensional streets with single-sided naturally-ventilated buildings. Numerical simulations with RNG k-ε model are validated against experimental data and the grid independence are tested as well. Air change rates per hour (ACH, h−1) are adopted for assessing indoor-outdoor ventilation by mean flows (ACHmean) and turbulent fluctuations (ACHturb) respectively. Age of air(τ), purging flow rate (PFR) and its corresponding ACHPFR are used to evaluate overall ventilation capacities.Shallower streets experience better indoor-outdoor ventilation. Outdoor ACHPFR drop from 14.69 to 17.55 h−1 to 3.96–3.97 h−1 as H/W rises from 0.5 to 3. In extremely deep canyon (H/W = 5), two-counter-rotating vortices produce much smaller velocity at low-level regions (U/Uref~10−3-10−5), resulting in small ACHPFR for outdoor (~0.76–0.91 h−1) and indoor in 1–13th floors (~0.03–0.61 h−1). When H/W = 0.5–1, leeward 5–6th floors experience smaller ACHPFR(e.g.~1.13–1.40 h−1 as H/W = 1) than the other floors (e.g. ~1.54–9.52 h−1 as H/W = 1). Particularly, as H/W = 2–3, leeward-side indoor ACHPFR in the middle floors (except the first and top two floors) are nearly constants (~1.02–1.69 h−1) and much smaller than windward-side ACHPFR(~1.41–4.35 h−1) which increase toward upper floors. Besides, the smaller window size reduces indoor ACHPFR by 19.38%~88.28%, but hardly influences outdoor ventilation. Moreover, both outdoor and indoor ACHPFR are greater than ACHmean but smaller than ACHmean + ACHturb. Although further investigations are still required, this paper provides an insight and scientific foundation on integrated indoor-outdoor ventilation evaluation with various effective ventilation indexes.

    • The development of a highly active manganese-based water oxidation catalyst in the design of an ideal artificial photosynthetic device operating under neutral pH conditions remains a great challenge, due to the instability of pivotal Mn3+ intermediates. We report here defective and "c-disordered" layered manganese oxides (MnOx-300) formed on a fluorine-doped tin oxide electrode by constant anodic potential deposition and subsequent annealing, with a catalytic onset (0.25 mA/cm(2)) at an overpotential (eta) of 280 mV and a benchmark catalytic current density of 1.0 mA/cm(2) at an overpotential (eta) of 330 mV under neutral pH (1 M potassium phosphate). Steady current density above 8.2 mA/cm(2) was obtained during the electrolysis at 1.4 V versus the normal hydrogen electrode for 20 h. Insightful studies showed that the main contributing factors for the observed high activity of MnOx-300 are (i) a defective and randomly stacked layered structure, (ii) an increased degree of Jahn-Teller distorted Mn3+ in the MnO6 octahedral sheets, (iii) effective stabilization of Mn3+, (iv) a high surface area, and (v) improved electrical conductivity. These results demonstrate that manganese oxides as structural and functional models of an oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in photosystem II are promising catalysts for water oxidation in addition to Ni/Co-based oxides/hydroxides.

    • The development of manganese-based water oxidation electrocatalysts is desirable for the production of solar fuels, as manganese is earth-abundant, inexpensive, non-toxic, and has been employed by the Photosystem II in nature for a billion years. Herein, we directly constructed a 3 D nanoarchitectured turbostratic δ-MnOx on carbon nanotube-modified nickel foam (MnOx/CNT/NF) by electrodeposition and a subsequent annealing process. The MnOx/CNT/NF electrode gives a benchmark catalytic current density (10 mA cm−2) at an overpotential (η) of 270 mV under alkaline conditions. A steady current density of 19 mA cm−2 is obtained during electrolysis at 1.53 V for 1.0 h. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the most efficient manganese-oxide-based water oxidation electrode and demonstrates that manganese oxides, as a structural and functional model of oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in Photosystem II, can also become comparable to those of most Ni- and Co-based catalysts.

    • Two zinc-based coordination complexes Y3 and Y4 have been synthesized and characterized, and their performance as hole-transport materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been investigated. The complex Y3 contains two separate ligands, and the molecular structure can be seen as a disconnected porphyrin ring. On the other hand, Y4 consists of a porphyrin core and therefore is a more extended conjugated system as compared to Y3. The optical and redox properties of the two different molecular complexes are comparable. However, the hole mobility and conductivity of Y4 as macroscopic material are remarkably higher than that of Y3. Furthermore, when employed as hole-transport materials in perovskite solar cells, cells containing Y4 show a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.05%, comparable to the Spiro-OMeTAD-based solar cells with an efficiency around 17.08%. In contrast, solar cells based on Y3 show a negligible efficiency of about 0.01%. The difference in performance of Y3 and Y4 is analyzed and can be attributed to the difference in packing of the nonplanar and planar building blocks in the corresponding materials.

However, the interfaces between the perovskite and the charge transport layers contribute to major power conversion efficiency (PCE) loss and instability. Here, we use a single material of 2-thiopheneethylammonium chloride (TEACl) to molecularly engineer both the interface between the perovskite and fullerene-C60 electron transport layer and the buried interface between the perovskite and NiOx-based hole transport layer. The dual interface modification results in optimized band alignment, suppressed nonradiative recombination, and improved interfacial contact. A PCE of 24.3% is demonstrated, with open-circuit voltage (Voc) and fill factor (FF) of 1.17 V and 84.6%, respectively. The unencapsulated device retains >97.0% of the initial performance after 1000 h of maximum power point tracking under illumination. Moreover, a PCE of 22.6% and a remarkable FF of 82.4% are obtained for a mini-module with an active area of 3.63 cm2.

    • Quantifying the upper limit of stable soil carbon storage is essential for guiding policies to increase soil carbon storage. One pool of carbon considered particularly stable across climate zones and soil types is formed when dissolved organic carbon sorbs to minerals. We quantified, for the first time, the potential of mineral soils to sorb additional dissolved organic carbon (DOC) for six soil orders. We compiled 402 laboratory sorption experiments to estimate the additional DOC sorption potential, that is the potential of excess DOC sorption in addition to the existing background level already sorbed in each soil sample. We estimated this potential using gridded climate and soil geochemical variables within a machine learning model. We find that mid- and low-latitude soils and subsoils have a greater capacity to store DOC by sorption compared to high-latitude soils and topsoils. The global additional DOC sorption potential for six soil orders is estimated to be 107 ± 13 Pg C to 1 m depth. If this potential was realized, it would represent a 7% increase in the existing total carbon stock.

    • Climate change has caused significant impacts on water resource redistribution around the world and posed a great threat in the last several decades due to intensive human activities. The impacts of human water use and management on regional water resources remain unclear as they are intertwined with the impacts of climate change. In this study, we disentangled the impact of climate-induced human activities on groundwater resources in a typical region of the semi-arid North China Plain based on a process-oriented groundwater modelling approach accounting for climate-human-groundwater interactions. We found that the climate-induced human effect is amplified in water resources management ('amplifying effect') for our study region under future climate scenarios. We specifically derived a tipping point for annual precipitation of 350 mm, below which the climate-induced human activities on groundwater withdrawal will cause significant 'amplifying effect' on groundwater depletion. Furthermore, we explored the different pumping scenarios under various climate conditions and investigated the pumping thresholds, which the pumping amount should not exceed (4 x 10(7) m(3)) in order to control future groundwater level depletion. Our results highlight that it is critical to implement adaptive water use practices, such as water-saving irrigation technologies in the semi-arid regions, in order to mitigate the negative impacts of groundwater overexploitation, particularly when annual precipitation is anomalously low.

It has also slowed down following up of the Moore's Law, and it is expected to hit the wall soon [1]. Graphene film with high in-plane thermal conductivity is one of the key materials to make it possible for electronics industry to continue to follow the Moore's Law. However, there are few studies focusing on the longitudinal thermal conductivity of graphene films. The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal thermal conductivity of graphene films according to ASTM D5470 [2]. The results show that the longitudinal thermal conductivity of the pressed graphene film is greater than that of the unpressurized graphene film. The longitudinal thermal conductivity is 10.6 W/m· K for the unpressurized graphene film and 20.6 W/m· K for the pressed graphene film.

    • There has been an urgent need to eliminate toxic lead from the prevailing halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but the current lead-free PSCs are still plagued with the critical issues of low efficiency and poor stability. This is primarily due to their inadequate photovoltaic properties and chemical stability. Herein we demonstrate the use of the lead-free, all-inorganic cesium tin-germanium triiodide (CsSn(0.5)Ge(0.5)l(3)) solid-solution perovskite as the light absorber in PSCs, delivering promising efficiency of up to 7.11%. More importantly, these PSCs show very high stability, with less than 10% decay in efficiency after 500 h of continuous operation in N-2 atmosphere under one-sun illumination. The key to this striking performance of these PSCs is the formation of a full-coverage, stable native-oxide layer, which fully encapsulates and passivates the perovskite surfaces. The native-oxide passivation approach reported here represents an alternate avenue for boosting the efficiency and stability of lead-free PSCs.

    • Transparent wood biocomposites based on PMMA combine high optical transmittance with excellent mechanical properties. One hypothesis is that despite poor miscibility the polymer is distributed at the nanoscale inside the cell wall. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments are performed to test this hypothesis, using biocomposites based on deuterated PMMA and "contrast-matched" PMMA. The wood cell wall nanostructure soaked in heavy water is quantified in terms of the correlation distance d between the center of elementary cellulose fibrils. For wood/deuterated PMMA, this distance d is very similar as for wood/heavy water (correlation peaks at q approximate to 0.1 angstrom(-1)). The peak disappears when contrast-matched PMMA is used, indeed proving nanoscale polymer distribution in the cell wall. The specific processing method used for transparent wood explains the nanocomposite nature of the wood cell wall and can serve as a nanotechnology for cell wall impregnation of polymers in large wood biocomposite structures.

    • A perylenediimide (PDI) tetramer-based three dimensional (3D) molecular material, termed SFX-PDI4, has been designed, synthesized, and characterized. The low-lying HOMO and LUMO energy levels, high electron mobility and good film-formation property make it a promising electron transport material (ETM) in inverted planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The device exhibits a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.3% with negligible hysteresis, which can rival that of device based on PC61BM. These results demonstrate that three dimensional PDI-based molecular materials could serve as high performance ETMs in PSCs.

    • Graphene attracts great attention due to its excellent properties. However, the mechanical of assembled graphene-based film is usually inferior than its inherent mechanical properties. Herein, we construct a high-performance graphene-based film via vacuum filtration process by using graphene as matrix and hydroxylated Carbon Nanotube (CNT) as reinforcement agent. The synergistic interaction of hydrogen bonds between CNT and graphene Oxide (GO) and ionic bonds between Fe2+ on CNT and GO significantly improve the mechanical properties of free-standing and flexible rGO/CNT film. Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) imaging and stress transfer mechanism analysis show that the introduction of CNT can hinder the slippage of GO sheets and promote the stress transfer under the continuous loading. The obtained rGO/CNT film shows high toughness of 3 MJ/m3, which is 3.6 times higher than that of GO sheets. This facile and scalable strategy can pave the way for the fabrication of high-performance graphene-based film in various applications.

    • Upconversion (UC) technology makes it possible to harvest infrared (IR) light from the sun and has increasingly been employed in recent years to improve the efficiency of solar cells. The progress in the area concerns both research on fundamental principles and processes of UC and technologies of device fabrication. Significant increase of important solar cell parameters, like short-circuit photocurrent density and open-circuit photovoltage as well as the total photon-to-current efficiency, has been accomplished. We here review the research published during the last few years in the area, in particular we consider the two most cherished techniques, namely the incorporation of upconverting nanophosphors directly into the photoanodes of the solar cells and the introduction of plasmonic metal nanoparticles co-existing with the UC particles. Other ways to achieve strong field enhancement, and the use of the non-linear nature of UC, is to apply microlenses, with or without assisting plasmonic excitation. Further enhanced UC action has been demonstrated by broad band and effective harvesting by organic IR antennas, with subsequent mediation by an intermediate nanoshell of the energy into the upconverting core. Codoping, nanohybrid and layer-by-layer technologies involving upconverting particles as well as the use of upconverting nanoparticles in hole-transport and electrolyte layers, tested in recent works, are also reviewed. While most of these technologies employ upconverting rare earth metals for sequential photon absorption, the main alternative technique, namely triplet-triplet annihilation UC using organic materials, is also reviewed. It is our belief that all these approaches will be further much researched in the near future, with potentially great impact on solar cell technology.

Synergy between the CFC as a self-standing conductive substrate and the FeS nanoparticle dotted MoS2 nanosheets with abundant active sites makes the noble-metal-free catalytic electrode FeS@MoS2/CFC highly efficient in nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), with an ammonia production rate of 8.45 mu g h(-1) cm(-2) and excellent long-term stability at -0.5 V in pH neutral electrolyte. Further electrolysis in acidic and alkaline electrolytes revealed the overall NRR catalytic activity of this electrode over a wide pH range.

    • Transfer and updating of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy model of fruit internal quality has become the focus of the industrial application. Internet of Things (IoT) and deep learning (DL) were proposed to perform soluble solids content (SSC) model transfer of apple by NIR. A model transfer platform including low-power handheld internal quality terminal and interacting cloud data system had been constructed. An autoencoder (AE) neural network model was developed for the spectral correction and model transfer. The average time for transmitting detection results to the detection terminal was 1.5 to 2.0 s, with a 100% effective transmission rate. After 5000 iterations of training, the correlation coefficient of different detection terminals improved by 55%, and the root mean square error was reduced by 94%. Selected samples from the second batch of apples detected by the No. 1 detection terminal were added to the original neural network for training. After adding 30 samples, the correlation coefficient increased by 13% and the root mean square error decreased by 90%. The results demonstrated that the AE neural network for spectral correction was effective in eliminating differences between devices and significantly reducing the impact of different detection terminals on the accuracy of NIR detection of SSC in apples. Therefore, the NIR detection model transfer technique could be practically exploited for fruit quality control assessment using different detection terminals.

    • This paper proposes a grid topology based passive optical interconnect (POI) architecture that is composed of multiple floors of arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) to offer high connectivity and scalability for datacenter networks. In the proposed POI signal only needs to pass one AWGR, and thus can avoid the crosstalk accumulation and cascaded filtering effects, which exist in many existing POI architectures based on cascaded AWGRs. Meanwhile, due to high connectivity, the proposed grid topology based POI also has the potential advantage of high reliability. Simulation results validate the network performance. With a proper node degree, the proposed grid topology can achieve acceptable blocking probability. Besides, steady performance is kept when the number of floors increases, indicating good scalability of the proposed POI.

    • The spin polarization in centrosymmetric molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) bulk crystal is recorded by helicity dependent photocurrent exposed as elliptically polarized terahertz (THz) emission. We assign this observation to hidden spin polarization due to the local Dresselhaus effect induced by the molybdenum atomic site asymmetry. This spin polarization induces ultrafast optically controlled circular photogalvanic current that results in elliptically polarized THz emission. Furthermore, this THz radiation exhibits a helicity dependent bleaching effect under opposite circularly polarized excitations due to the spin relaxation. Our results demonstrate the viability of all-optical control of hidden spin polarization in two-dimensional materials and propose the applicability of the THz emission spectroscopy as a sensitive and contactless method to study spintronic physics in two-dimensional materials.

    • The lack of a sizeable band gap has so far prevented graphene from building effective electronic and optoelectronic devices despite its numerous exceptional properties. Intensive theoretical research reveals that a band gap larger than 1 eV can only be achieved in sub-3 nm wide graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), but real fabrication of such ultranarrow GNRs still remains a critical challenge. Herein, we demonstrate an approach for the synthesis of ultranarrow and photoluminescent semiconducting GNRs by longitudinally unzipping single-walled carbon nanotubes. Atomic force microscopy reveals the unzipping process, and the resulting 2.2 nm wide GNRs are found to emit strong and sharp photoluminescence at similar to 685 nm, demonstrating a very desirable semiconducting nature. This band gap of 1.8 eV is further confirmed by follow-up photoconductivity measurements, where a considerable photocurrent is generated, as the excitation wavelength becomes shorter than 700 nm. More importantly, our fabricated GNR field-effect transistors (FETs), by employing the hexagonal boron nitride-encapsulated heterostructure to achieve edge-bonded contacts, demonstrate a high current on/off ratio beyond 105 and carrier mobility of 840 cm(2)/V s, approaching the theoretical scattering limit in semiconducting GNRs at room temperature. Especially, highly aligned GNR bundles with lengths up to a millimeter are also achieved by prepatterning a template, and the fabricated GNR bundle FETs show a high on/off ratio reaching 10(5), well-defined saturation currents, and strong light-emitting properties. Therefore, GNRs produced by this method open a door for promising applications in graphene-based electronics and optoelectronics.

    • Density functional theory calculations have been performed to study the effects of alloying Cr and W on the stability and diffusivity of interstitial He impurity in body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe host lattice. The interaction between two close Cr/W atoms is repulsive. The relative stable position for an interstitial He remains the tetrahedral interstitial site in the presence Cr. Energetically, He prefers to locate far away from W inside Fe host lattice due to the strong repulsive interaction between He and W. On the other hand, the He migration barrier becomes lower in the presence of Cr (0.026 eV) and W(0.049 eV), as compared to 0.059 eV for pure Fe. Addition of Cr is benefit for He self-trapping, while W is against. The effective diffusivity of He decreases with increasing Cr and W concentrations. Moreover, the additions of Cr and W slightly hinder He being trapped by monovacancy.

Current studies have shown that brown algae are rich sources of bioactive compounds with excellent nutritional value, and are considered functional foods with health benefits. Polysaccharides are the main constituents of brown algae; their diverse structures allow many unique physical and chemical properties that help to moderate a wide range of biological activities, including immunomodulation, antibacterial, antioxidant, prebiotic, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antitumor, and anticoagulant activities. In this review, we focus on the major polysaccharide components in brown algae: the alginate, laminarin, and fucoidan. We explore how their structure leads to their health benefits, and their application prospects in functional foods and pharmaceuticals. Finally, we summarize the latest developments in applied research on brown algae polysaccharides.

    • Oxide-supported noble metal catalysts have been extensively studied for decades for the water gas shift (WGS) reaction, a catalytic transformation central to a host of large volume processes that variously utilize or produce hydrogen. There remains considerable uncertainty as to how the specific features of the active metal-support interfacial bonding-perhaps most importantly the temporal dynamic changes occurring therein-serve to enable high activity and selectivity. Here we report the dynamic characteristics of a Pt/CeO2 system at the atomic level for the WGS reaction and specifically reveal the synergistic effects of metal-support bonding at the perimeter region. We find that the perimeter Pt-0-O vacancy-Ce3+ sites are formed in the active structure, transformed at working temperatures and their appearance regulates the adsorbate behaviors. We find that the dynamic nature of this site is a key mechanistic step for the WGS reaction. Revealing the structure and dynamics of active sites is essential to understand catalytic mechanisms. Here the authors demonstrate the dynamic nature of perimeter Pt-0-O vacancy-Ce3+ sites in Pt/CeO2 and the key effects of their dynamics on the mechanism of the water gas shift reaction.

    • The atmospheric concentrations of 14 organophosphate esters (OPEs) were monitored by passive air sampling at 33 sites to determine their spatial distributions, and seasonal variations (summer and winter) in Tianjin, North China. The total concentrations of the OPEs (Sigma 9OPEs) in the summer ranged from 0.08 to 1113 ng/sample with a median of 98.4 ng/sample, which was non-statistically different from the concentrations obtained in the winter (which ranged from 1.93 to 548 ng/sample with a median of 46.2 ng/sample). Among the observed OPEs, the concentrations of TnBP and TCiPP were statistically higher in the summer compared with the winter (p < 0.05). For grouped OPEs, only a significantly higher level of chlorinated OPEs was found in summer than that in winter. In the winter, spatial differences were found to be significantly different between the concentrations of TnBP, TiBP, TCEP, and TEHP in the suburban and rural areas (p < 0.05). Considering the possible point-sources, in the summer, the concentrations of TDCPP, TCiPP, DPEHP, TEHP, and the total concentration of TCPs (denoted as Sigma 3TCP, comprised of the concentrations of TCP, TmCP, and ToCP) in an electronic-waste (e-waste) dismantling area were higher than those obtained at the other sampling sites. Sigma 9OPEs at the e-waste site and another site located near a manufacturing plant of organophosphate flame retardants (OFRs) were both higher than the median concentrations obtained at the other sampling sites, and TCiPP was the most abundant pollutant. In the winter, the concentrations of Sigma 9OPEs at the e-waste site were still higher than their median concentrations at the other sites. Because OPEs are used in aircraft lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids, an airport was thought to be another important source of TiBP and TPhP in the present study. Therefore, the e-waste site, airport, and OFR manufacturing plant may be the major sources of OPEs in the environment.

    • With the growth of the Mobile Internet, people have become active in both the online and offline worlds. Investigating the relationships between users’ online and offline behaviors is critical for personalization and content caching, as well as improving urban planning. Although some studies have measured the spatial properties of online social relationships, there have been few in-depth investigations of the relationships between users’ online content browsing behaviors and their real-life locations. This paper provides the first insight into the geospatial properties of online content browsing behaviors from the perspectives of both geographical regions and individual users. We first analyze the online browsing patterns across geographical regions. Then, a multilayer-network-based model is presented to discover how inter-user distances affect the distributions of users with similar online browsing interests. Drawing upon results from a comprehensive study of users of three popular online content services in a metropolitan city in China, we achieve a broad understanding of the general and specific geospatial properties of users’ various preferences. Specifically, users with similar online browsing interests exhibit, to a large extent, strong geographic correlations, and different services exhibit distinct geospatial properties in terms of their usage patterns. The results of this work can potentially be exploited to improve a vast number of applications.

    • A novel Bayesian matrix factorization method for bounded support data is presented. Each entry in the observation matrix is assumed to be beta distributed. As the beta distribution has two parameters, two parameter matrices can be obtained, which matrices contain only nonnegative values. In order to provide low-rank matrix factorization, the nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) technique is applied. Furthermore, each entry in the factorized matrices, i.e., the basis and excitation matrices, is assigned with gamma prior. Therefore, we name this method as beta-gamma NMF (BG-NMF). Due to the integral expression of the gamma function, estimation of the posterior distribution in the BG-NMF model can not be presented by an analytically tractable solution. With the variational inference framework and the relative convexity property of the log-inverse-beta function, we propose a new lower-bound to approximate the objective function. With this new lower-bound, we derive an analytically tractable solution to approximately calculate the posterior distributions. Each of the approximated posterior distributions is also gamma distributed, which retains the conjugacy of the Bayesian estimation. In addition, a sparse BG-NMF can be obtained by including a sparseness constraint to the gamma prior. Evaluations with synthetic data and real life data demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method.

  • The genetic basis for ecological adaptation of the Atlantic herring revealed by genome sequencing

    • Ecological adaptation is of major relevance to speciation and sustainable population management, but the underlying genetic factors are typically hard to study in natural populations due to genetic differentiation caused by natural selection being confounded with genetic drift in subdivided populations. Here, we use whole genome population sequencing of Atlantic and Baltic herring to reveal the underlying genetic architecture at an unprecedented detailed resolution for both adaptation to a new niche environment and timing of reproduction. We identify almost 500 independent loci associated with a recent niche expansion from marine (Atlantic Ocean) to brackish waters (Baltic Sea), and more than 100 independent loci showing genetic differentiation between spring- and autumn-spawning populations irrespective of geographic origin. Our results show that both coding and non-coding changes contribute to adaptation. Haplotype blocks, often spanning multiple genes and maintained by selection, are associated with genetic differentiation.

    • Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) may cross the placental barrier and lead to fetal exposure. However, little is known about the factors that influence maternal-fetal transfer of these chemicals. PFAS concentrations were analyzed in 100 paired samples of human maternal sera collected in each trimester and cord sera at delivery; these samples were collected in Wuhan, China, 2014. Linear regression was used to estimate associations of transfer efficiencies with factors. Chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFAESs, 6:2 and 8:2) were frequently detected (>99%) in maternal and cord sera. A significant decline in PFAS levels during the three trimesters was observed. A U-shape trend for transfer efficiency with increasing chain length was observed for both carboxylates and sulfonates. Higher transfer efficiencies of PFASs were associated with advancing maternal age, higher education, and lower glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Cord serum albumin was a positive factors for higher transfer efficiency (increased 1.1-4.1% per 1g/L albumin), whereas maternal serum albumin tended to reduce transfer efficiency (decreased 2.4-4.3% per 1g/L albumin). Our results suggest that exposure to Cl-PFAESs may be widespread in China. The transfer efficiencies among different PFASs were structure-dependent. Physiological factors (e.g., GFR and serum albumin) were observed for the first time to play critical roles in PFAS placental transfer.

    • Inorganic hollow spheres have a great potential in many fields, such as calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) as carriers of active ingredients and local delivery. They are typically synthesized by the methods that reply on template-based strategies. However, the template residue and energy consumption during template removal are drawbacks. Currently developed template-free methods remain challenges such as time, cost and complicated procedures. In this paper, we introduce a general low-cost and template-free precipitation method with simple procedure. A series of inorganic hollow spheres, including calcium phosphate, calcium fluoride, strontium phosphate, strontium fluoride, barium phosphate and barium fluoride via magnesium were successfully synthesized, respectively. Based on these experimental results, a new model is proposed to explain the mechanism of the hollow inorganic spheres formation. This paper provides a general method to synthesize inorganic hollow spheres, which may have an important indication to other systems.

    • Calcium phosphate (CaP) and magnesium phosphate (MgP) are widely used as biomaterials. A novel method for low-cost manufacturing of calcium phosphate spheres and magnesium phosphate micro particles was studied. The method focuses on novel strategies of utilizing seawater and lake water. In the natural water, the molar ratios of Mg/Ca are constant. The morphologies of the particles are determined by ratio of Ca/P. This simple method provides a prototype to synthesize low-cost inorganic spheres with natural water, which facilitate large-scale production.

    • Modified supersaturated phosphate buffer solutions were used to synthesize phosphate-based spheres, including calcium phosphate (CaP), strontium phosphate (SrP) and barium phosphate (BaP). A series of ions concentrations in the modified phosphate buffer solutions were investigated in order to study their effects in precipitates morphologies. During synthesis, it was found that magnesium was the key factor in sphere formation. The morphologies of calcium phosphate, strontium phosphate and barium phosphate precipitates varied as the concentration of magnesium ions varied. When sufficient magnesium was provided, the precipitates appeared spherical, and the diameter was in range of 0.5-2 mu m. The morphologies, compositions and structure of spheres were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N-2 adsorption analysis. Moreover, the application of magnesium substituted calcium phosphate spheres in dentin tubules occlusion was investigated.

    • The focus of this study is on synthesis and mechanism of calcium fluoride (CaF2) spheres. Magnesium is the decisive factor in the formation of the spheres. The solubility product constant of Mg1-xCaxF2 is higher than those of CaF2 and MgF2. The structure of particles evolved to being spherical due to solubility equilibrium. The calcium fluoride spheres have great potential as dental materials in bleaching products.

    • In this crowdsourced initiative, independent analysts used the same dataset to test two hypotheses regarding the effects of scientists' gender and professional status on verbosity during group meetings. Not only the analytic approach but also the operationalizations of key variables were left unconstrained and up to individual analysts. For instance, analysts could choose to operationalize status as job title, institutional ranking, citation counts, or some combination. To maximize transparency regarding the process by which analytic choices are made, the analysts used a platform we developed called DataExplained to justify both preferred and rejected analytic paths in real time. Analyses lacking sufficient detail, reproducible code, or with statistical errors were excluded, resulting in 29 analyses in the final sample. Researchers reported radically different analyses and dispersed empirical outcomes, in a number of cases obtaining significant effects in opposite directions for the same research question. A Boba multiverse analysis demonstrates that decisions about how to operationalize variables explain variability in outcomes above and beyond statistical choices (e.g., covariates). Subjective researcher decisions play a critical role in driving the reported empirical results, underscoring the need for open data, systematic robustness checks, and transparency regarding both analytic paths taken and not taken. Implications for orga-nizations and leaders, whose decision making relies in part on scientific findings, consulting reports, and internal analyses by data scientists, are discussed.

    • Upon mild acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharide of Escherichia coli O165, the O-polysaccharide chain was cleaved at the glycosidic linkage of 5-N-acetyl-7-N-[(R)-3-hydroxybutanoyl]pseudaminic acid (Pse5Hb7Ac). Analysis of the resulting linear tetrasaccharide and alkali-treated lipopolysaccharide by 1H/13C 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy enabled elucidation of the following structure of the O-polysaccharide: →8)-α-Psep5Hb7Ac-(2 → 6)-β-D-Galp-(1 → 4)-β-D-Glсp-(1 → 3)-α-DGlсpNAc-(1→. The β-D-Galp-(1 → 4)-β-D-Glсp-(1 → 3)-D-GlсpNAc structural element is also present in the O-polysaccharide of E. coli O82. The content of the O-antigen gene cluster of E. coli O165 was found to be consistent with the O-polysaccharide structure established. Functions of proteins encoded in the gene cluster, including enzymes involved in the Pse5Hb7Ac biosynthesis and glycosyltransferases, were putatively assigned by comparison with sequences in available databases.

    • Tree stems undergo a massive secondary growth in which secondary xylem and phloem tissues arise from the vascular cambium. Vascular cambium activity is driven by endogenous developmental signalling cues and environmental stimuli. Current knowledge regarding the genetic regulation of cambium activity and secondary growth is still far from complete. The tropical Cannabaceae tree Parasponia andersonii is a non-legume research model of nitrogen-fixing root nodulation. Parasponia andersonii can be transformed efficiently, making it amenable for CRISPR-Cas9-mediated reverse genetics. We considered whether P. andersonii also could be used as a complementary research system to investigate tree-related traits, including secondary growth. We established a developmental map of stem secondary growth in P. andersonii plantlets. Subsequently, we showed that the expression of the co-transcriptional regulator PanNODULE ROOT1 (PanNOOT1) is essential for controlling this process. PanNOOT1 is orthologous to Arabidopsis thaliana BLADE-ON-PETIOLE1 (AtBOP1) and AtBOP2, which are involved in the meristem-to-organ-boundary maintenance. Moreover, in species forming nitrogen-fixing root nodules, NOOT1 is known to function as a key nodule identity gene. Parasponia andersonii CRISPR-Cas9 loss-of-function Pannoot1 mutants are altered in the development of the xylem and phloem tissues without apparent disturbance of the cambium organization and size. Transcriptomic analysis showed that the expression of key secondary growth-related genes is significantly down-regulated in Pannoot1 mutants. This allows us to conclude that PanNOOT1 positively contributes to the regulation of stem secondary growth. Our work also demonstrates that P. andersonii can serve as a tree research system.
