  • Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Publishing Company. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 52:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at P ¯ ANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel p¯ p→ e+e- is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e.p¯ p→ π+π-, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 95:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

  • Study of doubly strange systems using stored antiprotons
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 954, s. 323-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bound nuclear systems with two units of strangeness are still poorly known despite their importance for many strong interaction phenomena. Stored antiprotons beams in the GeV range represent an unparalleled factory for various hyperon-antihyperon pairs. Their outstanding large production probability in antiproton collisions will open the floodgates for a series of new studies of systems which contain two or even more units of strangeness at the PANDA experiment at FAIR. For the first time, high resolution gamma-spectroscopy of doubly strange Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei will be performed, thus complementing measurements of ground state decays of Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei at J-PARC or possible decays of particle unstable hypernuclei in heavy ion reactions. High resolution spectroscopy of multistrange Xi(-) -atoms will be feasible and even the production of Omega(-) -atoms will be within reach. The latter might open the door to the vertical bar S vertical bar = 3 world in strangeness nuclear physics, by the study of the hadronic Omega(-) -nucleus interaction. For the first time it will be possible to study the behavior of Xi(+) in nuclear systems under well controlled conditions.

  • The potential of Λ and Ξ- studies with PANDA at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: p¯ p→ Λ¯ Λ and p¯ p→ Ξ¯ +Ξ-. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

  • Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array for probing cosmology and fundamental physics with gamma-ray propagation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1475-7516. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of gamma-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of gamma-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift z = 2 and to constrain or detect gamma-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3 pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from gamma-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We conclude on the synergies between CTA and other upcoming facilities that will foster the growth of gamma-ray cosmology.

  • Nuclear astrophysics with radioactive ions at FAIR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

  • Severe accident research in the core degradation area : An example of effective international cooperation between the European Union (EU) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) by the International Science and Technology Center
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Engineering and Design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0029-5493 .- 1872-759X. ; 252, s. 226-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) was set up in Moscow to support non-proliferation of sensitive knowledge and technologies in biological, chemical and nuclear domains by engaging scientists in peaceful research programmes with a broad international cooperation. The paper has two following objectives: to describe the organization of complex, international, experimental and analytical research of material processes under extreme conditions similar to those of severe accidents in nuclear reactors and, to inform briefly about some results of these studies. The main forms of ISTC activity are Research Projects and Supporting Programs. In the Research Projects informal contact expert groups (CEGs) were set up by ISTC to improve coordination between adjacent projects and to encourage international collaboration. The European Commission was the first to use this. The CEG members - experts from the national institutes and industry - evaluated and managed the projects' scientific results from initial stage of proposal formulation until the final reporting. They were often involved directly in the project's details by joining the Steering Committees of the project. The Contact Expert Group for Severe Accidents and Management (CEG-SAM) is one of these groups, five project groups from this area from the total of 30 funded projects during 10 years of activity are detailed to demonstrate this: (1) QUENCH-VVER from RIAR, Dimitrovgrad and IBRAE, Moscow, and PARAMETER projects (SF1-SF4) from LUCH, Podolsk and IBRAE, Moscow; these concerned a detailed study of bundle quenching from high temperature; (2) Reactor Core Degradation; a modelling project simulating the fuel rod degradation and loss of geometry from IBRAE, Moscow; (3) METCOR projects from NITI, St. Petersburg on the interaction of core melt with reactor vessel steel; (4) INVECOR project, NNE Kurchatov City, Kazakhstan; this is a large-scale facility to examine the vessel steel retention of 60 kg corium during the decay heat; and finally, (5) CORPHAD and PRECOS projects, NITI, St. Petersburg undertook a systematic examination of refractory ceramics relevant to in-vessel and ex-vessel coria, particularly examining poorly characterised, limited data or experimentally difficult systems.

  • Photoinduced desorption of potassium atoms from a two dimensional overlayer on graphite
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 106:3, s. 982-1002
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of K atom desorption from the basal plane of graphite at 83 K induced by low energy photons (3-6 eV). The 2D potassium overlayer is characterized by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and work function measurements. At monolayer coverage (5.2 x 10(14) atoms cm(-2)), the dependence of the cross section on photon energy has a threshold at (h) over bar omega approximate to 3.0 eV and rises up to a maximum of 1.8 +/- 0.4 x 10(-20) cm(2) at 4.8 eV. The coverage dependence of the photoyield reflects the existence of two phases of adsorbed K, dilute ionized photo-active and close-packed photo-neutral, respectively. The observed photodesorption is a single-photon, nonthermal event, consistent with a substrate-mediated mechanism. The desorption results from attachment of optically excited hot electrons to the empty 4s state of ionized potassium. The theory predicts in this case a Gaussian line shape of the photoyield vs photon energy. Fitting the model parameters to the experimental data, we determine (i) the energy and slope of the excited state potential energy curve, and (ii) the position and width of the potassium-induced 4s resonance. The present findings combined with other available data for potassium on graphite are used to construct 1D potential energy curves along the surface normal for K+ and K-0. The calculated cross sections for s- and p-polarized Light are in qualitative agreement with the measurements. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

  • Photoinduced desorption of potassium atoms from graphite
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 363:1-3, s. 247-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of desorption of potassium atoms from the basal plane of graphite induced by photons with energies from 2 to 6 eV. The intensity of the photon flux employed in the measurements is low, and the observed photodesorption is a single-photon, non-thermal event. At monolayer coverage the photon-energy dependence of the cross section has a maximum at 4.8 eV. The experimental observations are interpreted in terms of a hot carrier mechanism, which involves attachment of optically excited substrate hot electrons to the empty 4s state of ionized potassium, and then desorption. The theory predicts a Gaussian line shape of the photoyield versus photon energy. Fitting the model parameters to the experimental data, we determine: (i) the potential energy for Gr + K+ and Gr + K-0; and (ii) the position (2.4 eV above the Fermi level) and width (0.15 eV) of the potassium 4s resonance, which is in good agreement with independent experimental observations.

  • Influence of Divalent Cations on Deformation and Rupture of Adsorbed Lipid Vesicles
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5827 .- 0743-7463. ; 32:25, s. 6486-6495
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fate of adsorbed lipid vesicles on solid supports depends on numerous experimental parameters and typically results in the formation of a supported lipid bilayer (SLB) or an adsorbed vesicle layer. One of the poorly understood questions relates to how divalent cations appear to promote SLB formation in some cases. The complexity arises from the multiple ways in which divalent cations affect vesicle substrate and vesicle vesicle interactions as well as vesicle properties. These interactions are reflected, e.g., in the degree of deformation of adsorbed vesicles (if they do not rupture). It is, however, experimentally challenging to measure the extent of vesicle deformation in real-time. Herein, we investigated the effect of divalent cations (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+) on the adsorption of zwitterionic 1,2-dioleoylsn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) lipid vesicles onto silicon oxide- and titanium oxide coated substrates. The vesicle adsorption process was tracked using the quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation (QCM-D) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) measurement techniques. On silicon oxide, vesicle adsorption led to SLB formation in all cases, while vesicles adsorbed but did not rupture on titanium oxide. It was identified that divalent cations promote increased deformation of adsorbed vesicles on both substrates and enhanced rupture on silicon oxide in the order Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Sr2+. The influence of divalent cations on different factors in these systems is discussed, clarifying experimental observations on both substrates. Taken together, the findings in this work offer insight into how divalent cations modulate the interfacial science of supported membrane systems.

  • Competition for Membrane Receptors: Norovirus Detachment via Lectin Attachment
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 141:41, s. 16303-16311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Virus internalization into the host cells occurs via multivalent interactions, in which a single virus binds to multiple receptors in parallel. Because of analytical and experimental limitations this complex type of interaction is still poorly understood and quantified. Herein, the multivalent interaction of norovirus-like particles (noroVLPs) with H or B type 1 glycosphingolipids (GSLs), embedded in a supported phospholipid bilayer, is investigated by following the competition between noroVLPs and a lectin (from Ralstonia solanacearum) upon binding to these GSLs. Changes in noroVLP and lectin coverage, caused by competition, were monitored for both GSLs and at different GSL concentrations using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. The study yields information about the minimum GSL concentration needed for (i) noroVLPs to achieve firm attachment to the bilayer prior to competition and to (ii) remain firmly attached to the bilayer during competition. We show that these two concentrations are almost identical for the H type 1-noroVLP interaction but differ for B type 1, indicating an accumulation of B type 1 GSLs in the noroVLP-bilayer interaction area. Furthermore, the GSL concentration required for firm attachment is significantly larger for H type 1 than for B type 1, indicating a higher affinity of noroVLP toward B type 1. This finding is supported by extracting the energy of single noroVLP-H type 1 and noroVLP-B type 1 bonds from the competition kinetics, which were estimated to be 5 and 6 kcal/mol, respectively. This demonstrates the potential of utilizing competitive binding kinetics to analyze multivalent interactions, which has remained difficult to quantify using conventional approaches.

  • Membrane Deformation Induces Clustering of Norovirus Bound to Glycosphingolipids in a Supported Cell-Membrane Mimic
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 9:9, s. 2278-2284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring and total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy have been used to investigate binding of norovirus-like particles (noroVLPs) to a supported (phospho)lipid bilayer (SLB) containing a few percent of H or B type 1 glycosphingolipid (GSL) receptors. Although neither of these GSLs spontaneously form domains, noroVLPs were observed to form micron-sized clusters containing typically up to about 30 VLP copies, especially for B type 1, which is a higher-affinity receptor. This novel finding is explained by proposing a model implying that VLP-induced membrane deformation promotes VLP clustering, a hypothesis that was further supported by observing that functionalized gold nanoparticles were able to locally induce SLB deformation. Because similar effects are likely possible also at cellular membranes, our findings are interesting beyond a pure biophysicochemical perspective as they shed new light on what may happen during receptor-mediated uptake of viruses as well as nanocarriers in drug delivery. © Copyright 2018 American Chemical Society.

  • High Sintering Resistance of Size-Selected Platinum Cluster Catalysts by Suppressed Ostwald Ripening
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 14:10, s. 5803-5809
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Employing rationally designed model systems with precise atom-by-atom particle size control, we demonstrate by means of combining noninvasive in situ indirect nano-plasmonic sensing and ex situ scanning transmission electron microscopy that monomodal size-selected platinum cluster catalysts on different supports exhibit remarkable intrinsic sintering resistance even under reaction conditions. The observed stability is related to suppression of Oftwald ripening by elimination of its main driving force via size-selection. This study thus constitutes a general blueprint for the rational design of sintering resistant catalyst systems and for efficient experimental strategies to determine sintering mechanisms. Moreover, this is the first systematic experimental investigation of sintering processes in nanoparticle systems with an initially perfectly monomodal size distribution under ambient conditions.
