  • Design, crystal structures and enhanced frequency-upconverted lasing efficiencies of a new series of dyes from hybrid of inorganic polymers and organic chromophores
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry. - : RSC Publishing. - 0959-9428 .- 1364-5501. ; 19:48, s. 9163-9169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new series of hybrid dyes, trans-4-(4′-N,N-dialkylaminostyryl)-N-methyl pyridinium [Cd(SCN)3−]n [alkyl = Me(1), Et(2), Pr(3) and n–Bu(4)] have been successfully synthesized from hybrids of inorganic polymers and organic chromophores. The structures of four new hybrid dyes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction first. The particular features of the hybrid dyes are (1) the inorganic anions form isolated polymeric one-dimensional zig-zag chains of [Cd(SCN)3−]n with an extended π-conjugation system within the polymeric –[M–S–C≡N]–M… chain and high polarizabilities; and (2) the organic cationic chromophores determine their optical properties. Experimental results revealed that the TPA cross-section values and overall energy conversion efficiencies of hybrid dyes with different alkyl pendant groups have obviously increased from 1 to 4, and in particular, have been substantially enhanced compared to their corresponding iodide analogues 1′–4′. Therefore, we speculate that such increases are attributable to arrangements of infinite anionic [Cd(SCN)3−]n chains and synergic effects with chromophore cations.

  • Technology Roadmap for Flexible Sensors
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society. - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 17:6, s. 5211-5295
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

  • Mitochondria-targeted iridium (III) complexes as two-photon fluorogenic probes of cysteine/homocysteine
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sensors and actuators. B, Chemical. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0925-4005 .- 1873-3077. ; 255, s. 408-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fluorescent imaging of cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (Hcy) is crucial to understand sulphur metabolism in living cells. Whereas two-photon active cyclometalated Ir(III) complex for detecting Cys/Hcy has been rarely reported. Herein, two novel cyclometalated iridium (III) complexes Ir1-1r2 with different electron-donor were designed, synthesized and fully characterized as well as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which could selectively react with Cys/Hcy, accompanying with an obvious one- and two-photon fluorescence enhancement in vitro. The mechanism for sensing Cys/Hcy was further analyzed in detail by mass spectra and time-dependent density functional theory calculations. It was found that Ir2, bearing ester group, exhibited higher performance on the selective detection of Cys and Hcy compared to In. Notably, the two-photon action cross-section value in the near-infrared region (similar to 800 nm) of Ir2 is significantly enhanced upon the addition of Cys/Hcy. Further application to cellular imaging indicated that Ir2 is membrane permeable and capable of monitoring the changes of intracellular mitochondrial Cys/Hcy. These results support that such two-photon active complexes might provide a promising platform for the detection of mitochondrial Cys/Hcy in living biological systems. • Two-Photon Active Organotin(IV) Carboxylate Complexes for Visualization of Anticancer Action
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 2373-9878. ; 3:5, s. 836-842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is still a challenge that organotin(IV) carboxylate complexes with high-performance two-photon activity for cancer therapy. At present work, two novel organotin carboxylate complexes LSn1 and LSn2, containing coumarin moiety, were rationally designed for two-photon fluorescent imaging and anticancer purpose. The complexes possessed large two-photon action cross-sections and high quantum yields. Living cells evaluation revealed that complexes LSn1 and LSn2 exhibited good biocompatibility and deep tissue penetration over femtosecond laser with wavelength of 840 nm. Furthermore, the antitumor active and as well as possible mechanism of complexes LSn1 and LSn2 have been investigated systematically. The results indicated that complexes LSn1 and LSn2 could induce apoptotic cell death through a mitochondria] dysfunction and ROS elevation pathway. The present work provides a strategy for rationally designing organotin(IV) carboxylate complexes with two-photon activity and antitumor activity.

  • Wind tunnel experiment and regression model for spray drift
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering. - Beijing, China : Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering. - 1002-6819. ; 31:3, s. 94-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With greater environmental awareness, the movement of pesticides within and off of a spray target area is acritical public concern. Ideally, all of the material applied should be deposited within the targeted swath on the intendedpest or plant. But realistically, a portion of the spray remains airborne and is carried downwind to non-target areas.Airborne spray leaving the targeted area reduces the applied dosage, and could cause damage to neighboring plant andwater source or other detrimental environmental impacts. To study the influences of nozzle type, spray mixture and windspeed on spray drift, experiments were conducted using a wind tunnel. Spray drift risk was assessed by adding a tracer tothe spray mixture and measuring the quantities of spray deposited downwind from the nozzle on horizontal polythenelines with 2 mm diameter perpendicular to the wind direction in a vertical and a horizontal array. At a distance of 2 mdownwind from the static nozzle, five collector lines (V1 to V5) were positioned one above the other at the spacing of0.1 m to provide an estimate of the spray still airborne through this vertical profile. An additional five sampling collectorstrings (H1 to H5) were placed in a horizontal array with one-meter horizontal spacing at 0.1 m height to determine thefallout volumes and gradients of the spray from 2 to 6 m downwind. A water-soluble fluorescent tracer was dissolvedinto tap water as the spray liquid, and after the experiments, the collecting lines were washed with deionized water tomeasure deposit and drift. The results indicated that deposits on sampling collector decreased with increased verticalelevation and horizontal distance. Average fallout and airborne deposit resulting from the different spray applicationswere shown in the paper. These figures showed the expected fallout and airborne profiles for all tested nozzle types andsizes. The highest fallout deposits were measured at a position closest to the nozzle (H1) with a systematic decrease withthe distance from the nozzle. The highest airborne deposits were found at the lowest sampling collector (V1) with asystematic decrease with increasing height above the wind tunnel floor. Airborne spray drift was affected by wind speed. At all sample positions, deposits on collectors were reduced at lower wind speed. Nozzle’s structure was also found toinfluence droplet’s size, so injector/pre-orifice nozzle produced coarser droplets and reduced spray drift. The amount ofspray recovered is based on the amount of active ingredient of spray mixture within each droplet rather than the totaldroplet volume. On that basis, a multiple non-linear model for statistical drift prediction including four independent,non-correlated variables (target distance, wind speed, nozzle type and chemical type) was established. The regressionmodel provided a drift evaluation approach, and it was important in the interpretation of wind tunnel data for differentnozzle types, chemical types and sampling methodologies.

  • A series of Zn(II) terpyridine complexes with enhanced two-photon-excited fluorescence for in vitro and in vivo bioimaging
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials chemistry. B. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-750X .- 2050-7518. ; 3:36, s. 7213-7221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is still a challenge to obtain two-photon excited fluorescent bioimaging probes with intense emission, high photo-stability and low cytotoxicity. In the present work, four Zn(II)-coordinated complexes (1-4) constructed from two novel D-A and D-p-A ligands (L-1 and L-2) are investigated both experimentally and theoretically, aiming to explore efficient two-photon probes for bioimaging. Molecular geometry optimization used for theoretical calculations is achieved using the crystallographic data. Notably, the results indicate that complexes 1 and 2 display enhanced two-photon absorption (2PA) cross sections compared to their corresponding D-A ligand (L1). Furthermore, it was found that complex 1 has the advantages of moderate 2PA cross section in the near-infrared region, longer fluorescence lifetime, higher quantum yield, good biocompatibility and enhanced two-photon excited fluorescence. Therefore, complex 1 is evaluated as a bioimaging probe for in vitro imaging of HepG2 cells, in which it is observed under a two-photon scanning microscope that complex 1 exhibits effective co-staining with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and nuclear membrane; as well as for in vivo imaging of zebrafish larva, in which it is observed that complex 1 exhibits specificity in the intestinal system.

  • Nonlinear optical response and two-photon biological applications of a new family of imidazole-pyrimidine derivatives
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Dyes and pigments. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0143-7208 .- 1873-3743. ; 126, s. 286-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of novel D-pi-A type two-photon absorption (2PA) imidazole-pyrimidine derivatives (EX-1 similar to EX-4) have been synthesized and characterized, with EX-1 was crystallography confirmed. Based on systematic photophysical investigations, the structure property relationships can be drawn as follows: (1) Both theoretical and experimental studies indicated that the different donor groups have large influences on the optical properties. (2) The 2PA cross-section values (sigma) were obtained both by Z-Scan and two photon excited fluorescence (2PEF) measurements. 2PA cross sections show an increasing trend with increasing electron-donating strength and the number of branches. (3) Comprehensively considered the optical performance, molecular volume, cytotoxicity and solubility, EX-1 and EX-2 were identified to be the best candidates for living cells (HepG2) imaging. Moreover, the 2PA excitable features of EX-1 and EX-2 are capable of imaging in fresh mouses liver tissues with a depth of ca. 70 mu m. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
