    • Cette communication traite de la « figure étymologique ». À partir d’exemples variés, nous décrirons quelques types de réalisations possibles de cette figure polymorphe en nous intéressant surtout à ses caractéristiques sémantiques. Comme en témoignent les différentes définitions qui en ont été proposées, cette figure peut prendre des formes diverses. Ainsi, elle peut être conçue comme la « [r]éunion dans une construction syntaxique de type exceptionnel, de mots apparentés par l’étymologie […] » (TLFi), comme dans « vivre sa vie ». Aslanov (2001) montre que ce type de rapprochement étymologique peut se faire de manière « camouflée », et cite un exemple de Claudel qui rapproche les mots « idée » et « idole », apparentés par le fait que leurs étymons grecques (« idea » et « eidôlon ») ont la même racine indo-européenne « *weid- » ‘voir’ : « Seigneur, vous m’avez délivré des livres et des Idées, des Idoles et de leurs prêtres ». Or, la figure peut aussi se définir comme l’« emploi du mot selon le sens de son étymon » (Aquien 1999). À titre d’exemple, Mallarmé, parlant de « l’hiver lucide », utilise, selon l’analyse de Pougeoise (2006), le mot « lucide » au sens du latin « lucidus » ‘clair, lumineux’. La figure étymologique concerne, dans ce cas, une occurrence de mot (« lucide ») et non deux, à la différence du vers de Claudel (« idées » – « idoles »). Si l’allusion à l’étymologie est perçue par le récepteur – et que la réception figurale ne reste pas « inactivée » (cf. Bonhomme 2005) – la figure étymologique peut se manifester comme un cas particulier de « plurisémie » (Némo 2014, Rabatel 2015), où le sens étymologique vient s’ajouter au sens actuel d’un mot. Mais nous verrons que l’emploi de ce procédé ne produit pas forcément une superposition de sens. Il peut aussi correspondre à d’autres phénomènes sémantiques, comme l’usage « flou » ou « approximatif » (cf. Fuchs 2009) ou encore l’emploi « monosémique » d’une unité.

    • La syllepse, pouvant être définie comme l’emploi d’une occurrence de mot dans deux sens différents, est une des figures de prédilection de Francis Ponge. Cet article examine les syllepses employées à la fin des poèmes de Ponge et s’intéresse à cette figure du point de vue de sa réception. À l’aide d’une analyse quantitative d’un corpus composé de 90 poèmes de Ponge, nous avons voulu tester l’hypothèse selon laquelle la fréquence de syllepses serait particulièrement élevée dans la partie finale de ses poèmes. Les résultats, inattendus, tendent à infirmer cette hypothèse, car il s’est avéré que la fin des textes étudiés ne se distingue pas par une fréquence de syllepses spécialement élevée. Ainsi, la fréquence ne se présente pas, ici, comme un facteur décisif permettant de comprendre le caractère saillant des syllepses apparaissant à la fin des textes, c’est-à-dire d’expliquer le fait que celles-ci sont susceptibles d’attirer beaucoup l’attention lorsqu’elles sont employées à cet endroit. En revanche, les résultats indiquent, indirectement, l’importance des facteurs positionnels pour la perception de cette figure : il se peut en effet qu’une syllepse soit perçue comme saillante du fait même de son positionnement, par exemple en raison de sa position à la fin du texte.

  • ”Kalla mig inte mamsell!” : En jämförelse av tre skandinaviska översättares behandling av kulturspecifika element i fransk- och engelskspråkig skönlitteratur

    • The present study deals with the work and practice of three Scandinavian translators, namely Kjell Olaf Jensen (Norwegian), Marianne Öjerskog (Swedish) and Agnete Dorph Stjernfelt (Danish). The main question of the thesis is what strategies the translators use when translating culture-specific elements from French and English. Theoretically the thesis positions itself within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and draws upon system theories as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture. The method consists of a source text – target text analysis, using a somewhat modified version of Pedersen’s (2007) method identifying seven translation strategies, namely (1) retention, (2) specification, (3) direct translation, (4) generalization, (5) substitution, (6) omission and (7) official equivalent. In this thesis the three former and the official equivalent are categorized as “adequate”, whereas generalization, substitution and omission are categorized as “acceptable” using Toury’s (2012) terminology. Six different types of culture-specific elements are investigated, namely (1) titles, address and professional titles, (2) currencies, (3) weights and measures, (4) literature and music, (5) education, and (6) names. In addition to this analysis, interviews with the three translators were carried out. Results show that there are both similarities and dissimilarities in the translators’ choices of translation strategies. It also turns out that the strategies used to a great extent depend on the culture-specific element in question and hardly ever on the source language. Results also suggest that the higher the translators’ amount of accumulated total capital, the more likely it is that they adopt a heterodoxic translation strategy. Jensen and Stjernfelt are more often positioned at one of the two extremes of the adequacy–acceptability axis than is the case for Öjerskog. Moreover, results from the interviews and the text analyses show that there are a number of norms that govern the translators’ practices. The translatorial practice is to manoeuver in a field governed by norms in order to produce the best possible target texts – target texts that are true to the original and conform to domestic literary standards.

    • Unter dem Rahmenthema Emotionen fand am 15./16. April 2016 auf dem Campus Gotland der Universität Uppsala die 12. Arbeitstagung schwedischer Germanistinnen und Germanisten Text im Kontext statt. Der vorliegende Band versammelt ausgewählte Beiträge, die in ihrer Vielfalt ein aktuelles Bild der Forschungsansätze und -projekte der Germanistik in Schweden vermitteln. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht von der Digitalisierung von Stammbüchern aus fünf Jahrhunderten bis zur Analyse von Metonymien in den Medien, von Fragen des transkulturellen Erzählens bis zu neuen Formen der Literatur im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung. Eine Untersuchung des Zusammenhangs von metasprachlichem Wissen und Grammatikkenntnissen bei schwedischen Deutschschülern rundet die Publikation ab. Der Band belegt, dass der Begriff der Emotionen sich als geeigneter Ausgangspunkt für den Dialog von Literaturwissenschaft und Sprachwissenschaft erweist; als verbindende Elemente fungieren vor allem kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze.

    • A Fragment of the Alexander Romance and of the Narrative on the Four Large Seas in a Prayer book and an Account of Virgin’s Miracles from the 18th Century (MS 61 from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Library) The paper identifies a fragment from the Alexander Romance and the Narrative on the Four Large Seas copied on the front flyleaf of manuscript no.61 from the Archives of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (cf. Kodov 1969: 103–104). The codex contains Prayer book and an Account of Virgin’s Miracles. The article offers the first ever publication of this fragment. It identifies two different parts in the fragment: O velikom ostrově o provan(s)ko(m), taken from the Chronograph redaction of the Alexander Romance, and O četirech˝ velikoch˝ morjach˝ belonging to another part of the same Chronograph. These two excerpts have been checked against the extant Chronographs as well as against the only Russian Chronograph copy kept in Bulgaria, No. 774 from the National Library in Sofia. The comparisons lead to the conclusion that the text on the flyleaf stands closest to the Russian Chronograph of 1512. The paper proves that these two parts are indeed two excerpts deliberately selected and copied on the flyleaf, and are not a fragment taken from another codex and reused in the binding of the eighteenth-century Prayer book. It is further established that Chronograph no. 774 is not the source of these excerpts, since the text of ms no.774 derives from the Chronograph of 1617.

    • I den här rapporten redovisas en fallstudie av litterär flerspråkighet och språkväxling utifrån Mikael Niemis roman Mannen som dog som en lax (2006). Romanen utspelar sig huvudsakligen i svenska Tornedalen, där många människor är tvåspråkiga och talar både meänkieli och svenska. Sändaren anser sig inte vara tvåspråkig och det är sannolikt inte heller flertalet tänkta mottagare. Däremot är språkliga förhållanden centrala för romanens tema. Svenska är huvudspråk i romanen och inslag på meänkieli/finska och andra språk svarar för en mindre del av textmassan. I det undersökta materialet, som utgör cirka hälften av det totala antalet textsidor i romanen, dominerar implicit språkväxling i form av metaspråkliga kommentarer och kontextuella ledtrådar. Den klart vanligaste typen av explicit språkväxling är svenska > meänkieli/finska. Explicit språkväxling markeras mestadels i texten, vanligen med kursiv stil och/eller översättning till svenska, och den uppträder främst i romanens dialog. Det är ovanligt med morfologisk integrering av belägg för explicit språkväxling i huvudspråket svenska, medan det är mer vanligt med syntaktisk integrering. Denna förekommer till största delen i olika former av anföring. I materialet finns exempel på att språkväxling används för att försöka återge ett autentiskt språkbruk och skildra en autentisk språkmiljö. Därtill finns exempel på att Tornedalen, tornedalingar och meänkieli mer skildras som exotiska fenomen jämfört med majoritetssamhället och människor som hör hemma i detta. Likaså finns det exempel på att läsare, beroende på sina kunskaper om Tornedalen, dess förhållanden och meänkieli/finska, kan inkluderas eller exkluderas i partier av Mannen som dog som en lax genom olika språkväxlingsstrategier som Mikael Niemi använder.

    • In his novel Finnegans Wake (1939) James Joyce makes use of a very personal variant of English, in which words are distorted or expected words are exchanged for similar or quite different ones, resulting in absurd readings packed with potential associative value rather than obvious meaning. Traces of a large number of different languages, in authentic or slightly twisted form, can likewise be identified as apparently unannounced elements in the text. Joyce’s narrative technique further includes the interweaving of several disparate themes into the same “story”, thereby emphasizing the possibility of associating from the text in several diverging directions and distinguishing different layers of meaning. In a way, it can be argued that Joyce, before generative grammar was born, is constantly making use of such notions as underlying structure, deep and surface structure, embedding, cyclicity, transformations etc. The point is illustrated by an analysis of a well-known passage (usually taken to deal with an act of sexual intercourse), which builds on a story about one Buckley, an alleged Irish soldier participating in the Crimean war and supposed to have shot a Russian general. Attempts have earlier been made by researchers on Joyce to identify Buckley. This is another one.

    • I min avhandling (Romeborn 2013) genomförde jag en stilistisk och retorisk studie av stilfiguren ”syllepsis” (syllepse på franska) och av hur denna används hos den franska poeten Francis Ponge (1899-1988) (på 70-talet gavs ett antal av Ponges dikter ut i svensk tolkning av Jesper Svenbro). Syllepsis är en vedertagen term inom franskspråkig stilistik och retorik (se t.ex. Aquien & Molinié 1999 el. Ricalens-Pourchot 2011) och mer generellt inom såväl fransk lingvistik (se t.ex. Bonhomme 2005) som litteraturvetenskap (se t.ex. Jarrety 2001). En s.k. syllepsis är en typ av ambiguitet. Det rör sig om en syllepsis då ett ord förekommer endast en gång (dvs. det är en ordförekomst) men ordet ändå används i två betydelser på samma gång. Om figuren används i humoristiskt syfte, blir det ett slags ordlek eller ordvits. Inom ramen för avhandlingen utarbetade jag en metod för att identifiera den här stilfiguren i texter. I mitt bidrag skulle jag vilja presentera denna metod samt även, i mån av tid, några av de resultat jag kom fram till. Min studie kan ses som ett exempel på språkvetenskaplig analys av litterära texter och på det viset passar presentationen väl in i workshopen om litterär stilistik.

    • The New Order of Criticism (2020-2024) is a mixed-methods project combining algorithmic and interpretative approaches to the study of literary criticism. The project expands on a prior study of Swedish book reviews from the years 1906, 1956 and 2006 ('The Order of Criticism', Samuelsson 2013), re-examining and re-evaluating the original results through the use of computational tools, language technology and big data. The aim of the present paper is to discuss early experiences and results from the interdisciplinary approach utilized by the current project, a collaborative process where interpreter and programmer are in dialogue, and where methodologies, and their instantiation in tools, are reflexively discussed from an epistemological point of view. In our analysis we ask: How can insights from working with digital methodologies and tools inform traditional scholarship on literary criticism? How can interpretative approaches and results inform digital methods?.

    • What happens when a writer crosses the boundaries of literature? This is a question which it is quite pointless to ask, unless you state your theoretical point of departure. When that has been done, however, it is one of the most important issues which a literary scholar can raise. Through certain parts of the theories of Jean-Jacques Lecercle (mainly his concept of the “remainder” in language), Marjorie Perloff (mainly her discussions of how free verse is convention-based, and of what comes out of that insight: what she labels “after free verse”), and Jacques Rancière (mainly his concepts “polis” and “the political”), I aim to discuss what happens when Swedish contemporary poets Anna Hallberg and Lars-Mikael Raattamaa during recent years have sought to actively cross the boundaries of literature. These theoretical perspectives enable me to dwell on the political implications of this kind of boundary-crossing. This political dimension consists of a critique not only of the conventions of literature, but also of the modernist view of e.g. free verse. The crossing of literature’s boundaries not only moves them. More importantly, in these cases, it identifies them; it even highlights them, rendering them open for scrutiny.

  • Tracing Cultural Transfer Through Multiple Translation Analysis. The Case of the Swedish 19th-Century Bourgeois Novel in German and Czech

    • In the last decades, Comparative Literature has become more directed towards questions of transculturality. This renders translations of literary texts an important role as a vehicle not just for the transfer of text and language, but also of ideas and cultures. Digital methods for comparing multiple translations within and across languages might prove to be important for exploring how, for example, a Swedish 19th century bourgeois novel is reframed in Czech translations. The chosen example is A Merchant House (1859) by Emilie Flygare–Carlén (1807–1892) who was one of the most popular authors in Czech speaking regions in the late 19th Century. In this paper existing collation tools are used for comparing two different Czech translations (1872 and 1910), by two different translators. This might both reveal how the gender, context and position of the translator colours the literary text and how the translations are adapted to changing literary trends. Furthermore, parallel text alignment is tried as a method for comparing across languages, since the Czech translation is made from a German translation. Are the Czech translations subject to “foreignization” or “domestication”? Or do they retain the same traits as the German translation, which is the source of the first Czech translation? Does the systematic comparison of multiple translations contribute to the understanding of how texts move from certain gendered cultural contexts and ideologies to others?

    • Reading, even when silent and individual, is a social phenomenon and has often been studied as such. Complementary to this view, research has begun to explore how reading is embodied beyond simply being ‘wired’ in the brain. This article brings the social and embodied perspectives together in a very literal sense. Reporting a qualitative study of reading practices across student focus groups from six European countries, it identifies an underexplored factor in reading behaviour and experience. This factor is the sheer physical presence, and concurrent activity, of other people in the environment where one engages in individual silent reading. The primary goal of the study was to explore the role and possible associations of a number of variables (text type, purpose, device) in selecting generic (e.g. indoors vs outdoors) as well as specific (e.g. home vs library) reading environments. Across all six samples included in the study, participants spontaneously attested to varied, and partly surprising, forms of sensitivity to company and social space in their daily efforts to align body with mind for reading. The article reports these emergent trends and discusses their potential implications for research and practice.

    • Cette étude examine comment les choix linguistiques dans les cimetières alsaciens reflètent la situation sociolinguistique de la région et le changement de langue du germanique (allemand et alsacien) au français. Dans ce paysage linguistique (Landry & Bourhis 1997), les inscriptions des épitaphes ont un rôle fonctionnel puisqu’elles comportent des informations personnelles sur les défunts (nom, dates, etc.), et aussi un rôle symbolique, de par le choix de langue qui pouvait être transgressif. En effet, en Alsace, région ayant basculé plusieurs fois entre France et Alle-magne, le choix du français ou de l’allemand était censé suivre la langue du pouvoir. Mais ceci n’est pas toujours le cas. Ainsi, le choix du français pendant une période allemande pourra indiquer une prise de position identitaire en faveur de la France. Le choix de l’allemand, par contre, peut être considéré comme étant plutôt la conséquence de la tradition germanique de la région. De plus, noms et prénoms sont eux aussi marqués par les appartenances nationales.     • This article discusses how picturebooks for children can make use of poetry in order to empower child readers to bridge the asymmetric aetonormativity between child and adult inherent in the picturebook format. The article launches the concept of the poetic zone, springing from both epistemologically based poetry theory and norm critical theory. Two picturebooks are used as examples: Gro Dahle’s and Svein Nyhus’s Snill [What a Girl!], from 2002, and Lina Ekdahl and Emma Hanquist’s Vi smular vi härmar en gök [We Crumble We Imitate a Cuckoo], from 2016. Analyses of the poetic qualities of the two books show how they both pinpoint, and performatively empower, the child reader’s perspective. This takes place in the relationships between child and adult within the books’ plots, as well as in relation to the picturebook format. The poetic qualities that contribute in this sense concern both imagery, and rhythmical as well as auditory aspects of language.

    • The purpose of this article is to study what the French linguist Jean-Jacques Lecercle identified as ”the remainder of language” in his book The Violence of Language (1990), and how this is being put into play in two poetry books from 2008, by the Swedish poets Anna Hallberg and Lars Mikael Raattamaa. By explicitly challenging a large number of conventions of language, typography, and poetry, these books raise critical issues on how the language system works. These issues specifically concern what parts and aspects of language are allowed in within the linguistic system, and what parts and aspects are being kept out. These regulational mechanisms are demonstrated, and scrutinised, in these books – giving them touches of meta-critique, as well as of ideology critique. This scrutiny not only shows the relevance of identifying and understanding the mechanisms of exclusion that Lecercle identified within academic linguistics 25 years ago. It also brings them into contemporary society, where they – due to globalisation, and technological development – have disseminated, and become part of almost everyone’s daily experience. The results of the article stress how this dissemination increases the societal relevance of the kind of scrutiny undertaken by Hallberg and Raattamaa, and how it can assist in re-ideologising language.

    • This article studies the translation flows of picture book series between Scandinavia (Sweden and Norway) and France between 2011 and 2021. According to studies on literary flows, countries having so-called « dominated » and « peripheral » or « semi-peripheral » languages, for example Norway and Sweden, should import more literature from the core (France) than the other way around. However, the present study shows that this theory does not hold water regarding picture books for children aged 3-6 years, where the literary flows from the core to the (semi-)periphery are uneven, or even non-existing. We are able to ascertain that the status of the picture book series is maintained as they cross the borders between France and Scandinavia. Moreover, the series translated to French are almost always characterized by a high literary legitimacy (symbolic recognition of authors and works, limited number of titles per series, affirmation of graphic and authorial creativity), with often a representation of a Scandinavian perspective. The fact that the books originally are part of a series is rarely foregrounded as a marketing device in Scandinavia, but on the contrary, this could be the case in France. The translation flows concerning picture book series show that seriality, sales figures and literary legitimacy are compatible.

    • The relation between gender, emotion and normative ideals is a prominent theme in British sensation fiction of the 1860s, and a central concern in Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s novel Lady Audley’s Secret (1862). But despite critical assent concerning the importance of emotions in the text, there are no focused studies of their meaning and narrative function. This study explores how representations of anger and shame convey gender specificity and how the way characters express and perform emotions interplay with constructions of social power in the novel. Braddon’s work contains more examples of women than men exhibiting signs of anger and more instances of men than women showing shame which means that anger might be understood as female and shame as a male quality in the text. The contexts where these emotions occur indicate the opposite, however. Women displaying anger are shown to transgress gendered conduct codes, whereas men mostly experience shame because of women’s misbehaviour and as their guardians. Although the distribution of instances when male and female characters show anger or shame could initially be understood as a manifestation of the disruptive qualities of the sensation genre, such an interpretation is undermined by the gendered relations between emotional expression, power and control in the novel.

    • Languages differ in how events are described, but little is known about how semantics interacts with online event processing. This study targets this question examining placement events in Swedish. Swedish has three obligatory placement verbs for events where objects have support from below: sätta ’set’, ställa ’stand’, and lägga ’lay’. Swedish lacks a superordinate general term like English put (Gullberg & Burenhult, 2011). For every placement event the verb choice depends on object properties, and the direction of the object’s extension from the ground. We use event-related potentials (ERPs) and appropriateness ratings of verb usage to investigate the interaction between verb semantics and event properties. Typically violations of semantic congruency positively affect the amplitude of the N400 (Kutas & Hillyard, 1980). Studies also report a centro-parietal positivity (P600) when real-world knowledge is violated and verbs are incongruous to preceding contexts (Kuperberg, 2007, for a review). Previous ERP studies of visually presented images or movies of actions and events have reported an N400 followed by a P600 when the function of an object is violated (e.g., using a screwdriver as a key, Bach, et al., 2009; Balconi & Caldiroli, 2011).Method: Native speakers (N = 24, 18-35 years) watched still images of placement events followed by sentences visually presented word by word. Sentences described the depicted events while ERPs were recorded and time-locked to the placement verbs. Participants also did an appropriateness rating offline. Object properties (Base/Without base), symmetry (Sym/Asym), and orientation from the ground (Vertical/Horizontal) were varied and sentences with the three different placement verbs were combined with each image in a cross-subject design.Results: Base was important for appropriateness ratings of verb usage with symmetric objects while orientation was important for asymmetric objects. In contrast, there were no ERP effects to base (Base/Without) for symmetric objects. Asymmetric-base objects showed increased N400s and P600s with verbs incongruent with the depicted events (orientation, e.g., ‘lay’ with vertical glass). Asymmetric-Without base elicited an increased P600 when verbs were incongruent to depicted events when horizontally oriented (e.g., ‘set’ with horizontal avocado), but an increased N400 when verbs were incongruent to the atypical vertical placement of the objects (e.g., ‘lay’ with a vertical avocado).Discussion: Results showed an increased amplitude of both ERP effects (N400/P600) when placement verbs were incongruent with typical placement scenarios of objects that in the real-world are placed vertically or horizontally (Asymmetric-Base, e.g., a candle; cf. Bach et al., 2009). However, for objects without a base the anterior negativity was increased with a mismatch between the verb and the presented images (the depicted events), while the P600 increased for mismatches between the verb and typical real-world events. These results suggest the anterior N400 and the P600 indeed index different relationships with event processing as previously suggested for images (Sitnikova, et al., 2008). Our results agree with previous studies suggesting that the processing of verb meaning in language cannot be separated from knowledge of object handling in the real world (cf., Van Berkum, et al., 2008).

  • The Perceived Importance of Language Skills in Europe — The Case of Swedish Migrants in France

    • In a European context, where member states of the European Union share a common language policy, multilingualism and foreign language (FL) learning are strongly promoted. The goal is that citizens learn two FLs in addition to their first language(s) (L1). However, it is unclear to what extent the multilingual policy is relevant in people’s lives, at a time when the English language is established as a lingua franca. This survey-based study contributes insights into the relevance of the EU multilingual policy in an intra-European migration context, by focusing on Swedish migrants (n = 199) in France, who are L1 speakers of Swedish. We investigated the perceived importance of skills in FL French, FL English, and L1 Swedish, for professional and personal life. The quantitative analyses showed that participants perceive skills in French and in English to be equally important for professional life, whereas skills in Swedish were perceived to be less important. For personal life, skills in French were perceived as the most important, followed by skills in English, and then Swedish. In conclusion, the European multilingual language policy appears to be reflected in Europeans’ lives, at least in the case of Swedish migrants in France.

    • Övdalian is spoken in central Sweden by about 2000 speakers. Traditionally categorized as a dialect of Swedish, it has not received much international attention. However, Övdalian is typologically closer to Faroese or Icelandic than it is to Swedish, and since it has been spoken in relative isolation for about 1000 years, a number of interesting linguistic archaisms have been preserved and innovations have developed. This volume provides seven papers about Övdalian morphology and syntax. The papers, all based on extensive fieldwork, cover topics such as verb movement, subject doubling, wh-words and case in Övdalian. Constituting the first comprehensive linguistic description of Övdalian in English, this volume is of interest for linguists in the fields of Scandinavian and Germanic linguistics, and also historical linguists will be thrilled by some of the presented data. The data and the analyses presented here furthermore challenge our view of the morphosyntax of the Scandinavian languages in some cases – as could be expected when a new language enters the linguistic arena.

    • Acquiring Germanic verb second is typically described as difficult for second-languagelearners. Even speakers of a V2-language (Swedish) learning another V2-language (German)are said not to transfer V2 but to start with a non-V2 grammar, following a universaldevelopmental path of verb placement. The present study contests this claim, documentingearly targetlike V2 production for 6 Swedish ab-initio (and 23 intermediate) learners ofGerman, at a time when their interlanguage syntax elsewhere is nontargetlike (head-initialVPs). Learners whose only nonnative language is German never violate V2, indicatingtransfer of V2-L1 syntax. Informants with previous knowledge of English are less targetlikein their L3-German productions, indicating interference from non-V2 English. V2 per se isthus not universally difficult for nonnative learners.

    • Thispaper investigates the L2 acquisition of clausal syntax in post-puberty learnersof German and Swedish regarding V2, VP headedness and verb particleconstructions. The learner data are tested against L2 theories according towhich lower structural projections (VP) are acquired before higher functionalprojections (IP, CP), VP syntax is unproblematic (invulnerable), but where grammatical operations related to thetopmost level of syntactic structure (CP) are acquired late (e.g. Platzack’s(2001) vulnerable C-domain). It willbe shown that such theories do not hold water: native speakers of Swedishlearning German and native speakers of German learning Swedish both master V2from early on. At the same time, these learners exhibit a nontargetlike syntaxat lower structural levels: residual VO in the case of the Swedish-L1 learnersof German, and persistent nontarget transitive verb particle constructions inthe German-L1 learners of Swedish. I argue that these findings are bestexplained by assuming full transfer of L1 syntax (e.g. Schwartz & Sprouse 1996).
