  • En brokig gemenskap
  • 2017

  • From Big Bang to Big Data : A History of the Media
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • More than just newspapers, television, and social networks, media are the means by which any information is communicated, from cosmic radiation traces to medieval church bells to modern identity documents. Cultures are held together as much by bookkeeping and records as they are by stories and myths. From Big Bang to Big Data is a long history of the media – how it has been established, used, and transformed from the beginning of recorded time until the present. It is not primarily a story of revolutions and innovations, but of continuities and overlaps that reveal surprising patterns across history. Many media were invented as ways to store and share information, and many have served as powerful tools for administration and control. The concerns raised about media today, whether about privacy, piracy, or anxieties over declining cultural standards, preoccupied earlier generations too. In a playful style, accompanied by more than one hundred illustrations, the authors show us how every society has been a media society in its own way. From antique graffiti to last year’s viral YouTube clip, the past is only approachable through media. From Big Bang to Big Data provides a new way of thinking about media in history – and about human societies past and present.

  • Sprickor i fasaden
  • 2018

  • Dissecting the Gatekeepers : Relational Perspectives on the Power of Search Engines
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Deep Search. - Innsbruck, Wien, Bozen : Studienverlag. - 9783706547956 ; , s. 117-132
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The paper engages in an in-depth discussion of the search engine Google, focusing on its relationship to webmasters and users. Attempts by webmasters to game the ranking system in order to boost the position of their websites are met by Google with a subtle combination of rewards and punishment. It is argued that this strategy involves the establishment of a disciplinary regime that enforces a certain norm for web publishing. Google’s relationship to the users, on the other hand, is characterized by less invasive forms of power. By inserting itself deeply into the users’ information environment, Google can collect and analyze unprecedented amounts of user data. It is argued that the modeling of segmented consumption behavior that these schemes are based upon involves a governmental form of power. It is a kind of power that aims at controlling differential behavior patterns by gaining an intimate statistical knowledge of a population and using this knowledge as a means of predictive risk management.

  • Ovisshetens tid. Den nationella SOM-undersökningen 2022
  • 2023
Ovisshetens tid är SOM-institutets 82:a forskarantologi.

  • Use of social media sites and readership diversity: A case study at Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media has provided new opportunities for academics to disseminate their research results. They allow users to upload academic papers and links to published papers, track demand for their published articles, and engage in professional discussions with other users (Meishar-Tal and Efrat Pieterse, 2017). This paper aimed to study the use of academic and non-academic profiling sites and platforms amongst scholars at Chalmers University of Technology. We were also interested in the purpose that scholars had for using these platforms. Furthermore, using data about people who register in Mendeley as readers of papers, this article explored diverse types of users of scientific papers by scholars at Chalmers. These gave us insight into the different social media platforms being used, the purpose of use, the readers’ status and their topics of interest at Chalmers. Furthermore, this helped us to provide statistics on how scholarly publications at Chalmers are used for scientific, educational, or other professional purposes.

  • Discussing blockchain applications in TED Talks: A fashion wave approach to understanding the blockchain phenomenon
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE. - 1932-6203. ; 18:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since its first appearance as the infrastructure supporting Bitcoin, blockchain has received different waves of attention from practitioners and academics. Besides the degree of interest, the attention to blockchain has often focused not merely on its own potential and characteristics but on its applications field. However, looking at its application and deployment in domains other than cryptocurrency or the nascent non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain technology does not seem to be widely adopted or is still in its early stages. Given this, we are interested in how managers and the general public are informed about new technology other than through academic papers or the specialized press. In this paper, we analyze how blockchain has been presented by speakers invited to give TED and TEDx Talks to identify the most common terms used to present blockchain in these talks using a multi-methods approach (qualitative analysis and big data analysis) and see if the discourse surrounding blockchain has shifted over time. The results of this study show how the different perspectives brought by broadcasters like TED often overshadow a technological innovation like the blockchain in its evolution and application by the fact that the focus is instead shifted to products and services built on it. Also, this study shows how different degrees of attention and expertise are associated with each fashion wave of new or emergent technology innovations.

  • Artificial intelligence in the information ecosystem: affordances for everyday information seeking
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. - 2330-1635. ; , s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this conceptual article, we argue that artificial intelligence (AI) systems are contributing to the generation of an environment of affordances for everyday information practices through which they exert influence on people and the planet in ways that often are left unrecognised. We illustrate our insights by focusing on the practices of information seeking in everyday life, suggesting that the affordances of AI systems integrated into search engines, social media platforms, streaming services, and media generation, shape such practices. This shaping may, paradoxically, result both in the increase and reduction of diversity of and access to information. We discuss the potential implications of these developments in terms of the sustainability of information ecosystems and suggest solutions for addressing them through regulation and education. Drawing from the fields of library and information science and science and technology studies and research on affordances, everyday information practices, and sustainability, the article seeks to respond to the need for more nuanced theoretical insights on the impact and implications of AI on information practices and to develop conceptual tools with which to examine the co-evolution of humans and information systems from a systemic perspective.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Librarianship and Information Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0961-0006 .- 1741-6477. ; , s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social networking sites have become indispensable information and communication tools in everyday life. This qualitative study investigated the information-related activities and affordances of a Facebook group for foreign mothers living in Sweden. Four key information activities were identified: posting, monitoring, commenting and searching. These activities show how the group members accessed the information resources embedded within the group in a variety of visible, invisible, active and passive modes. The article concludes with a discussion of how these different modes are facilitated by the affordances of visibility, accessibility, persistence and associations.

  • Books on Screens : Players in the Swedish e-book market
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The music and film industries have long come to terms with the digital, and now the traditional printed book is challenged by digital formats. The e-book has become established in most countries, but is still a small part of the book industry. In this book a group of researchers follow the actors involved in the Swedish e-book market, from authors and publishers to libraries, booksellers and readers during 2012-2016. Using surveys, interviews and other sources the main actors were researched and it is shown how they act and react towards the e-book and towards each other. While the main focus in on Sweden as a small language country, several international comparisons are made. Are printed books disappearing soon? How are reading habits changing when the book becomes digital? Which forces are driving radical change and which are holding it back? The book discusses these and related questions and shows that after a period of rapid increase in the production and use of e-books, several factors slow down the rate of adoption, but digitisation of the book is an ongoing process and the current e-book is not the end of the story.

    • This article describes a study that investigated the need for and challenges connected to the establishment of a collaboratory - a sociotechnical forum where information and other resources can be made accessible and used by practitioners within library and information science. In order to identify needs and challenges interviews were carried out with a number of practitioners at a number of different institutions. The results reveal that there is a need for a collaboratory in order to facilitate the sharing of personal knowledge “on demand”. It is of great importance that the collaboratory is well integrated with practitioner’s daily activities.

  • 2018. - 1
  • Ingår i: Digital Transformation and Global Society. - Cham : Springer Nature Switzerland AG. - 9783030028459 - 9783030028466 ; , s. 3-18
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we examined the influence of personality factors and demographic factors on Internet usage. Personality was defined from the Five Factor Model of personality in terms of Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, while demographic factors were defined as gender, age and socioeconomic status (e.g. income and educational attainment). The results from a large, representative Swedish sample (N = 1,694) show that global Internet usage can be explained by a high degree of Extraversion, young age and high socioeconomic status. Our findings are consistent with some previous studies, but in contrast with others. We discuss contrasting results in terms of different study designs, cultures and time periods of Internet development. The results are discussed in terms of the “rich get richer model” and digital divides, and what broader implication our findings might have for society. The study may help facilitate our understanding regarding future challenges in the Internet design.

  • Practices and experiences of science communication: what scientists write beyond academia
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Scientists’ communication outside academia—science communication—has been researched extensively in the Social Sciences, examining its value and role in society (Davies, 2020). In Applied Linguistics, recent work such as Luzón and Pérez-Llantada (2019) investigates the constellations of genres and practices that comprise academic writing, yet questions remain about scientists’ own perspective and experiences with science communication. What genres are written by scientists, beyond publication? What can we learn from their experiences? To address these questions, we conducted a two-year project at a university of technology. In phase one, we adopted content and network analysis to map most frequently text types, topics, fields, and collaborative networks. Results indicate that science communication is done mostly by tenured academics in fields where research has a clear impact on society. In phase two, we investigated established scientists’ experiences through ethnographic interviews: what they write, how and why, and the role of science communication in their work life and career. Despite their different stories, common themes emerged. First, their motives denote ”scholarship of engagement” (Boyer, 1996): science communication aimed to propagate scientific knowledge, educate and engage (as opposed to marketization). Secondly, writing practices are tied to the nature of their work—comprising texts such as industry reports, non-fiction, and debate articles. Thirdly, they write for intrinsic motives, mostly in their spare time and without training or support. We suggest directions for further research and the development of training programs that build on genre pedagogy.   Boyer, E. L. (1996). The scholarship of engagement. • Scientific communication beyond academia: writing practices and scientists’ experiences
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Scientists’ communication outside academia—science communication—has increased in recent years along with the political will to democratise access to knowledge. Clearly, in this push towards engagement with society academics themselves play a central role, but questions remain of what they actually write beyond scientific publication. What other genres are written by scientists, in different fields? What are their experiences and what can we learn from them? We summarize a 2-year project that examined science communication writing practices at a university of technology. In phase one, we adopted content and network analysis to map the types of texts that are most frequently written, identifying topics, fields, and collaborative networks. Our results indicate a varied and uneven picture: science communication is done mostly by tenured academics in fields where research has a clear impact on society. In phase 2, through ethnographic narrative interviews we investigated established scientists’ experiences, motives, and practices: what they write, how they do it and why, and the place and space that science communication takes in their work life and career. The scientists we interviewed told very different “stories”, yet common themes emerged. First, their motives align with the notion of ”scholarship of engagement” (Boyer, 1996): science communication has democratic value as a means to educate and share scientific knowledge (as opposed to neo-liberal marketization). Secondly, they engage in different writing practices based on the nature of their work—producing texts such as reports to industry, non-fiction books, and debate articles. Third, they engage with science communication for intrinsic motives, writing mostly in their spare time, mostly without training or support. In the final phase of the project, we focus on the metacognitive strategies that these experienced scientists adopt when writing for readers outside academia, on the premise of research theorizing metacognition as facilitating transfer of writing skills across genres and tasks—as integrated in models of writing expertise. We conclude with suggestions for further research and the development of training programs that build on genre pedagogy. Boyer, E. L. (1996). The scholarship of engagement. • Ingår i: Museum & Society. - Leicester : University of Leicester. - 1479-8360. ; 17:3, s. 437-452

    • This study investigates the relationship between playable, interactive games onoriginal hardware and the representation of game culture using the case of theexhibition GameOn 2.0, often considered to be the largest exhibition of digitalgames in the West so far. Qualitative interviews with museum staff were usedin order to elicit their perspective on the relationship between playability andcontextualization. Our results suggest that play as a way of engaging with gamesas museum objects has limitations which make it necessary to add other meansof contextualization in order to afford critical engagement with digital games ascultural heritage. Play excludes visitors who lack necessary gaming skills as wellas many genres of games which need longer or different kinds of interaction thana museum can allow for in the context of an exhibition. Moreover, we show that notall games can be exhibited in the same way and that we need to adapt exhibitionstrategies to individual games and their properties and contexts.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries. - 2241-1925. ; :SI, s. 49-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academic libraries collaborate in several ways. For instance, collaboration can concern standards for indexing and statistics, technical solutions or collection development. A question that a given academic library might ask is with which other academic libraries the library should principally collaborate. In this study, we show how bibliometric methods can be used to generate information that can support decision making with regard to the question at stake. We evaluate the amount of research collaboration between Stockholm University and other Swedish academic institutions across five publishing years, and for the whole considered time period, where research collaboration is operationalized as co-publishing. A dataset of publications obtained from Web of Science, where each publication has at least one Stockholm University address, is used in the study. Co-publishing rates, non-fractionalized and fractionalized, across the publishing years and for the whole for period, for Stockholm University and other Swedish academic institutions, are reported. Further, parts of the outcome of the study are visualized in terms of co-publishing networks.

    • The purpose of this Master thesis is to deepen understanding of how the concept of information literacy is used within Swedish higher education. The empirical material consists of course syllabi from three different programmes offered at Kristianstad University, Sweden. These are analysed from a sociocultural perspective through qualitative content analysis. Using a data-driven coding frame with different categories, the method helps to define the level of clarity with which information literacy is expressed in the texts. The results of the study reveal that information literacy is seldom explicitly expressed in course syllabi. Information literacy is usually only implied or a potential connection can be discerned. It is concluded that the invisibility of information literacy as such may render it unimportant to students. It is suggested that in a sociocultural perspective, the teaching of information literacy ought to be embedded in the curricula. This requires cooperation between teachers and librarians, something which historically has been difficult to achieve. The analysis also shows that there are connections to information literacy in the syllabi in areas that are highly valued by both professions. These include creative thinking, scientific working processes and the use of information- and communication technology. By shedding light on these similarities, this thesis suggests ways of bringing the two professions closer together.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The e-book has gained a large number of readers in many countries. However, the growth rate, as well as the market penetration of e-books, varies considerably between countries and language areas. In the United States and other English-speaking countries, the use of e-books is more widespread than in many European countries, such as Sweden. In both the United States and Swedish markets, the growth rate has slowed down during the latest 2 years, and the majority of readers still seem to prefer printed books. This article aims to reveal the relationship between attitudes and use of e-books and to contextualize this in relation to socio-demographic background, library use and reading habits. The results, based on national, representative surveys in Sweden during 2013 and 2014, show that people’s attitudes are a significant and important factor for the choice of e-books instead of print, but this is probably a two-way relationship. It is also evident that e-books serve a complementary rather than displacement function in relation to print.

  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500. ; 20, s. 279-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish government has decided that all research results in the form of research data and scientific publications financed with public funds should be openly accessible as far as possible. The question is whether the responsible actors and if the universities are ready to implement the change. The significance of open access has amplified in Sweden. Earlier research has brought to light that the collection and preservation of research data are often surrounded by ambiguous rules and lack a comprehensive structure. For example, archiving is not given enough consideration in connection to research projects and researchers often tend to save their material on platforms that are not persistent over time. This article is based upon a qualitative research approach where 15 semi-structured interviews have been used as primarily data sources to investigate the implementation of open access of research data and scientific publications. The article investigated how Swedish universities and public authorities were working with archiving and implementation of open research data and their opinions on open access. The results displayed a lack of coordination, resources and infrastructure but also that common agreed nomenclature were missing. The management of research data was not part of an overall recordkeeping strategy. One explanation could be differences in the information culture among researchers and archivists. Social sciences theory has been combined with archival theory in order to explain the reasons to this. These have been put in relation to the principles of the open data directive.

  • Ingår i: Education for Information. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 0167-8329 .- 1875-8649. ; 37:3, s. 259-285
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teachers are the key to an inclusive and quality education for all. Therefore, training teachers and teacher students and understanding how they learn, including information-seeking behaviours, is crucial. This systematic literature review explores the observed research gap regarding teacher students’ information-seeking behaviours. Of specific interest is information-seeking affective behaviours and the research practice context. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guided the review process. Searches were conducted in three key research databases and resulted in 1006 references. Abstracts and titles were screened and assessed using Rayyan. After screening, 56 publications were chosen for the qualitative synthesis, of which 39 used only or partly quantitative methods and thereby of interest for the review. The high number of studies resulted in a need to divide the review into two studies. The second part will focus on qualitative methods studies. The results were then analysed through thematic analysis. The results revealed a research gap regarding quantitative and mixed methods studies of non-normative and qualitative features of teacher students’ information-seeking behaviours, especially affective behaviours and in research practices. This is the first systematic review of teacher students’ information-seeking behaviours. Thus, a valuable contribution to information-seeking behaviour and information literacy research has been provided.

  • Could early tweet counts predict later citation counts? A gender study in Life Sciences and Biomedicine (2014–2016)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203 .- 1932-6203. ; 15:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, it was investigated whether early tweets counts could differentially benefit female and male (first, last) authors in terms of the later citation counts received. The data for this study comprised 47,961 articles in the research area of Life Sciences & Biomedicine from 2014–2016, retrieved from Web of Science’s Medline. For each article, the number of received citations per year was downloaded from WOS, while the number of received tweets per year was obtained from PlumX. Using the hurdle regression model, I compared the number of received citations by female and male (first, last) authored papers and then I investigated whether early tweet counts could predict the later citation counts received by female and male (first, last) authored papers. In the regression models, I controlled for several important factors that were investigated in previous research in relation to citation counts, gender or Altmetrics. These included journal impact (SNIP), number of authors, open access, research funding, topic of an article, international collaboration, lay summary, F1000 Score and mega journal. The findings showed that the percentage of papers with male authors in first or last authorship positions was higher than that for female authors. However, female first and last-authored papers had a small but significant citation advantage of 4.7% and 5.5% compared to male-authored papers. The findings also showed that irrespective of whether the factors were included in regression models or not, early tweet counts had a weak positive and significant association with the later citations counts (3.3%) and the probability of a paper being cited (21.1%). Regarding gender, the findings showed that when all variables were controlled, female (first, last) authored papers had a small citation advantage of 3.7% and 4.2% in comparison to the male authored papers for the same number of tweets.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • News outlets and popular science magazines have played an important role in increasing the public’s knowledge, engagement with and understanding of global environmental issues in recent years. Increased access to scholarly outputs might foster a culture of greater scientific education, which in turn could have a direct impact on public policy. This paper aimed to study: (i) Which topics in the area of environmental sustainability have been communicated to the members of the public via News and Popular Science articles. (ii) If these topics were also found in OA and Non-OA scientific articles. Three data sets comprising documents published between 2014 and 2018 were obtained from ProQuest and Scopus databases. Our findings showed four topics have been communicated to the general public via News and Popular Science articles. ‘Environmental protection’ and ‘Socio-economic aspects of environmental sustainability’ were the common topics amongst OA, Non-OA and News and Popular Science articles. Although the three sets had two topics in common, they placed different levels of importance on different topics. In the OA set ‘Biodiversity management & wildlife conservation’ and ‘Sustainable agriculture’ were regarded as motor topics. In the News and Popular Science set, ‘Environmental policy’ appeared as a well-developed and motor topic.

  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 126:9, s. 8109-8128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we investigated whether open access could assist the broader dissemination of scientific research in Climate Action (Sustainable Development Goal 13) via news outlets. We did this by comparing (i) the share of open and non-open access documents in different Climate Action topics, and their news counts, and (ii) the mean of news counts for open access and non-open access documents. The data set of this study comprised 70,206 articles and reviews in Sustainable Development Goal 13, published during 2014–2018, retrieved from SciVal. The number of news mentions for each document was obtained from Altmetrics Details Page API using their DOIs, whereas the open access statuses were obtained using Unpaywall.org. The analysis in this paper was done using a combination of (Latent Dirichlet allocation) topic modelling, descriptive statistics, and regression analysis. The covariates included in the regression analysis were features related to authors, country, journal, institution, funding, readability, news source category and topic. Using topic modelling, we identified 10 topics, with topics 4 (meteorology) [21%], 5 (adaption, mitigation, and legislation) [18%] and 8 (ecosystems and biodiversity) [14%] accounting for 53% of the research in Sustainable Development Goal 13. Additionally, the results of regression analysis showed that while keeping all the variables constant in the model, open access papers in Climate Action had a news count advantage (8.8%) in comparison to non-open access papers. Our findings also showed that while a higher share of open access documents in topics such as topic 9 (Human vulnerability to risks) might not assist with its broader dissemination, in some others such as topic 5 (adaption, mitigation, and legislation), even a lower share of open access documents might accelerate its broad communication via news outlets.

    • The interest for user experience (UX) and usability in libraries has grown rapidly over the past years and has now become an essential tool for developing and assessing a library’s digital services and physical spaces. At Linköping University Library (LiUB) we are slowly moving towards a user-centered culture, where users are being observed interacting with both physical and virtual spaces, but this article will only focus on the library’s online presence. The main objective is to argue for continuous usability testing as a part of regular library activity.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Information Services and Use. - Guimarães : IOS Press. - 0167-5265 .- 1875-8789. ; 31:3-4, s. 259-269, s. 123-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main purpose of this project has been to examine the accessibility of refereed conference articles and the OA- and publishing policies of conferences in order to in this way elucidate different aspects concerning self-archiving in Swedish institutional repositories. For this purpose, the project participants have examined a number of conferences and references to conference articles via their institutional repositories during a specific time period and described these from the perspective of a common scheme. The study has showed that the local institutional repositories fill an important role to make conference publications visible. We have found that ca. 50% of the conference papers can be published as postprints in our institutional repositories. We have noticed that ca. 15% or the studied conference articles are not available at all. It is, therefore, of great importance to use local institutional repositories as a publishing channel, not only for primary published material such as dissertations and reports, but also as a source for finding these conference articles "without a home". Between 20-25% of the examined articles were found in some type of OA archive; ca. half of these were found in one of the project participants' own institutional repositories. This indicates that the publishing database of respective higher education institution is an important factor for open accessibility. Ca. 10% of the conferences in the study had an explicit OA policy or expressed such a policy by openly making conference articles accessible on their conference sites. A big problem when it comes to self-archiving of conference articles is the lack of information about OA policy. The landscape of conference publishing is complex and the self-archiving of documents from conferences is very time-consuming. Above all, we would wish a policy resource for conferences similar to the SHERPA/RoMEO. At present, however, there is no other alternative than scrutinizing the conferences' copyright information to the authors and from this attempt to draw conclusions about possible self-archiving. To facilitate the future handling and classification of conference articles in Swedish institutional repositories a number of recommendations are suggested.

  • Using the institutional repository as a platform for quality assessment of and open access to artistic works : A Project at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, University of Gothenburg, Sweden
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the university world, the financial allocations for research are increasingly dependent on bibliometric indicators of faculty publications registered in databases and repositories. Following a decision by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg, the allocation of faculty research resources, should from the budget year 2012 partly be based on bibliometric indicators and partly on external funds. Each faculty has had to develop and formulate their bibliometric indicators in a way that best reflects their specific subject field and their publishing culture. The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts has, beside traditional publications, also decided to focus on the unique excellence that characterizes its field, i.e. artistic works. We will show how it was made possible to use a bibliometric indicator also in assessing art works and how a workflow using the institutional repository as a platform was tried out in practice.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Documentation. - : Emerald. - 0022-0418 .- 1758-7379. ; Vol. 68:2, s. 238-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The aim of this study is to further understanding of the situated activity of seeking pictures. It relates to an ongoing discussion on how multimodal information literacies are enacted in different social practices. Design/methodology/approach – In order to understand the characteristics of the communication and interactions in the activity of seeking pictures, video recordings from an ethnographic study of primary school children working with problem-centred assignments have been analysed. Findings – The analysis reveals how the activity of seeking pictures is shaped by the assumption that pictures are different from facts and information; pictures are seen primarily as having decorative functions. The activity is also characterised by playful, yet efficient cooperation between the children; they make the activity meaningful by transforming it into a play and game activity where pictures become important as physical objects, but not as a semiotic means of learning. Research limitations/implications – The study is limited to the activity of seeking pictures in a specific primary school; however, it shows how modes other than textual modes can be included in the study of information activities. Practical implications – The study reveals the need for developing methods for enhancing children’s possibilities to critically examine and learn from visual material, such as pictures. Originality/value – Research on information seeking and information literacies rarely focus on multimodal aspects of information activities or the seeking of pictures outside special collections, despite the increased significance of visual material in the contemporary media landscape. This paper shows how studies of multimodal information activities can be designed.

  • Swedish researchers' responses to the cancellation of the big deal with Elsevier
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Insights: the UKSG journal. - : Ubiquity Press, Ltd.. - 2048-7754. ; 33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2018, the Swedish library consortium, Bibsam, decided to cancel big deal subscriptions with Elsevier. Many researchers (n = 4,221) let their voices be heard in a survey on the consequences of the cancellation. Almost a third of them (n = 1,241) chose to leave free-text responses to the survey question 'Is there anything you would like to add?'. A content analysis on these responses resulted in six themes and from these, three main conclusions are drawn. First, there is no consensus among researchers on whether the cancellation was for good or evil. The most common argument in favour of the cancellation was the principle. The most common argument against cancellation was that it harms researchers and research. A third of the free-text responses expressed ambivalence towards the cancellation, typically as a conflict between wanting to change the current publishing system and simultaneously suffering from the consequences of the cancellation. The general support for open access in principle reveals a flawed publishing system, as most feel the pressure to publish in prestigious journals behind paywalls in practice. Second, it was difficult for researchers to take a position for or against cancellation due to their limited knowledge of the ongoing work of higher education institutions and library consortia. Finally, there are indications that the cancellation made researchers reflect on open access and to some extent alter their publication pattern through their choice of copyright licence and publication channel.
