- Genom historien har skilda föreställningar om Norden skapats och uttryckts i olika delar av Europa. De har påverkat beskrivningarna av både Europa och Norden som specifika kulturella rum, och de har bidragit till att politiska, ekonomiska och filosofiska intressen och värderingar kopplats till bestämda geografiska områden. Det finns därför en spännande mångtydighet i själva begreppet Norden, och denna mångtydighet vill bokens olika artiklar belysa. Norden ses här omväxlande som en rent politisk enhet, en geografisk plats, ett kulturellt rum, och ett inre tillstånd. Genomgående fungerar Norden dock som en projektionsyta för strömningar och föreställningar, ofta positiva sådana, varför det också utgör ett mål för drömmar och resor. Men vi finner även en rörelse mot en mörkare och mer kritisk Nordenbild som löper som en röd tråd genom flera av bidragen.

- Boksamlingen som presenteras i detta kapitel tillhörde den tyske bysantinologen och slavisten Robert Adolf (Rolf ) Klostermann (1907–1983). Den innehåller litteratur på bulgariska, engelska, fornkyrkoslaviska, franska, italienska, litauiska, polska, ryska, serbiska, slovenska, svenska, tyska och ukrainska, mest rörande teologi och kyrkohistoria i olika slaviska länder, främst i Ryssland. Samlingen omfattar cirka 600 volymer och är ett unikt vittnesbörd till perioden 1920–1980. Den omfattar mellankrigstiden, andra världskriget, efterkrigstiden och tiden kring kalla kriget, som är representerad av bland annat flera böcker med kommunistisk och ateistisk propaganda. Detta kapitel är ett samarbete mellan UB och Institutionen för språk och litteraturer, Humanistiska fakulteten vid Göteborgs universitet. Det tar sitt avstamp i den tidigare forskningen kring samlingen. Genom finansiering från Apotekare Gustaf Bernströms fond, har Taissia Goriounova kunnat ansluta till arbetet med att inventera, kategorisera och systematisera hela samlingen. Detta arbete genomfördes under perioden 2018–2020. Vi använde EndNote för att skapa poster med beskrivningar av materialet i samlingen. Projektet ledde till att flera intressanta exemplar upptäcktes och gav nya ledtrådar till samlingens historia.

- The background material of the study consists of articles about French literature gathered between 2010 and 2014 in the Swedish press. The aim of the article is to isolate the most widely discussed French literature from France in the Swedish press during the period, in order to explore why the transfer of this literature persists over time, how it is perceived, and which type of mediators bring about this transmission. The study raises questions about the image of French literature in Swedish media, Sweden’s impact on the transnational circulation of literature, and the use of French literature to place Sweden on the literary map.The results of the reception study show that French literature is presented as both aesthetically disruptive with innovative features and as a normative and traditional model. It incarnates an image of tradition as well as of modernity. French literature from France is principally mediated by orthodox journalists with a consistent symbolic capital, and the posture of these journalists is analyzed through Sapiro’s model, inspired by Bourdieu. The orthodox journalists manage to redirect the symbolic capital inherent to consecrated French literature at three levels: national, personal, and transnational. Firstly, the importation of French literature increases Swedish literature’s symbolic capital. Secondly, this transfer allows for an auto-consecration of the orthodox journalists themselves. Thirdly, this use of highly valued imported literature engenders a supplementary consecration (surconsecration) of a national literature and its dominating language. In conclusion, these observed bilateral literary exchanges show the often overlooked importance of peripheral countries in transnational literary transmission. The results modify Casanova’s (2002) model, since they display the impact on the market from the margins. The transfer of central national literatures in dominating languages towards peripheral countries allows for dominated languages and minor national literatures to take an active part in the construction and reconstruction of the relations on the global literary map.

- This book advances critical discussions about what coloniality, decoloniality and decolonization mean and imply in the Nordic region. It brings together analysis of complex realities from the perspectives of the Nordic peoples, a region that are often overlooked in current research, and explores the processes of decolonization that are taking place in this region. The book offers a variety of perspectives that engage with issues such as Islamic feminism and the progressive left; racialization and agency among Muslim youths; indigenizing distance language education for Sami; extractivism and resistance among the Sami; the Nordic international development endeavour through education; Swedish TV-reporting on Venezuela; creolizing subjectivities across Roma and non-Roma worlds and hierarchies; and the whitewashing and sanitization of decoloniality in the Nordic region. As such, this book extends much of the productive dialogue that has recently occurred internationally in decolonial thinking but also in the areas of critical race theory, whiteness studies, and postcolonial studies to concrete and critical problems in the Nordic region. This should make the book of considerable interest to scholars of history of ideas, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, international development studies, legal sociology and (intercultural) philosophy with an interest in coloniality and decolonial social change.

- Cette communication traite de la « figure étymologique ». À partir d’exemples variés, nous décrirons quelques types de réalisations possibles de cette figure polymorphe en nous intéressant surtout à ses caractéristiques sémantiques. Comme en témoignent les différentes définitions qui en ont été proposées, cette figure peut prendre des formes diverses. Ainsi, elle peut être conçue comme la « [r]éunion dans une construction syntaxique de type exceptionnel, de mots apparentés par l’étymologie […] » (TLFi), comme dans « vivre sa vie ». Aslanov (2001) montre que ce type de rapprochement étymologique peut se faire de manière « camouflée », et cite un exemple de Claudel qui rapproche les mots « idée » et « idole », apparentés par le fait que leurs étymons grecques (« idea » et « eidôlon ») ont la même racine indo-européenne « *weid- » ‘voir’ : « Seigneur, vous m’avez délivré des livres et des Idées, des Idoles et de leurs prêtres ». Or, la figure peut aussi se définir comme l’« emploi du mot selon le sens de son étymon » (Aquien 1999). À titre d’exemple, Mallarmé, parlant de « l’hiver lucide », utilise, selon l’analyse de Pougeoise (2006), le mot « lucide » au sens du latin « lucidus » ‘clair, lumineux’. La figure étymologique concerne, dans ce cas, une occurrence de mot (« lucide ») et non deux, à la différence du vers de Claudel (« idées » – « idoles »). Si l’allusion à l’étymologie est perçue par le récepteur – et que la réception figurale ne reste pas « inactivée » (cf. Bonhomme 2005) – la figure étymologique peut se manifester comme un cas particulier de « plurisémie » (Némo 2014, Rabatel 2015), où le sens étymologique vient s’ajouter au sens actuel d’un mot. Mais nous verrons que l’emploi de ce procédé ne produit pas forcément une superposition de sens. Il peut aussi correspondre à d’autres phénomènes sémantiques, comme l’usage « flou » ou « approximatif » (cf. Fuchs 2009) ou encore l’emploi « monosémique » d’une unité.

Något betydelsefullt : Leonid Dobyčins möten bortom orden i den sovjetiska samtiden

- This thesis studies the 1931 short story collection Portret [The Portrait] by the Russian author Leonid Ivanovich Dobychin (1894–1936?). My main argument is that the principal theme in Dobychin’s writings arises out of the complexities of human encounters. My approach is based on affirmative interpretations that I call “encountering” readings. They draw on critical practices developed by Boris Gasparov, who argues in his 2013 study of Pasternak Boris Pasternak: Po tu storonu poėtiki (Filosofiia. Muzyka. Byt) that the key to Pasternak’s work lies not in the dominant feature of their linguistic texture, but in the momentary states of everyday life that the author captures, and Henri Meschonnic’s Critique du rythme: Anthropologie historique du langage (1982). Meschonnic focuses on rhythm as an intrinsic aspect of the text that requires the reader to participate actively in appreciating the text as a work of art by following the interplay between rhythm, the active subject and what is expressed. Both scholars reflect a turn away from the linguistically informed theoretical approaches that dominated the academic study of literature in the twentieth century. Similarly, I approach Dobychin’s characters on the level of their personal conflicts and everyday lives by simulating an interpersonal encounter in an anti-theoretical search for meaning that is congenial to both the central theme of the stories and the way in which they reveal human encounters “beyond words,” as it were, both within the works and with the reader, through suggestive associations and not yet categorized, “precategorial” experiences in everyday life. The “unoutspokenness” (nedogovorënnost’)—i.e. reticence, a deliberate avoidance of explicitness that Dobychin’s contemporary critics ascribed to his writings and often disparaged as “incomprehensibility”—serves as a starting point for a critical discussion of both earlier research on Dobychin and theoretical approaches to literature more generally. In searching for a dominant formal feature, a ‘key’ or ‘code’, in Dobychin’s writings, earlier scholars have tended to describe it in terms of an anti-aesthetic. The alleged lack of plot, inner coherence and meaning is explained as deliberate, intended to performatively mirror the absurdness and inadequacies, the disorientation and loss of meaning in Soviet reality itself. In this thesis, I argue instead that there is no such lack or incoherence in Dobychin’s works. The “nedogovorënnost’” of his short stories is instead understood as an exact and purposeful way of conveying meaning through what is experienced and shared beyond words in a time that was overburdened with idealistic ideological discourses. At the heart of Dobychin’s stories are moments of fragile human interaction that underlie trivial dialogues and actions in banal everyday existence. The stories let the reader experience the sudden and unexpected human connections that the characters encounter in their everyday impressions. The contrasts and plurality of human perspectives thus perceived evoke a potential interaction beyond societal roles. These brief encounters are presented as something precarious in a Soviet society striving towards a single true ideology. Such a reading suggests that Dobychin is not so much a deliberately enigmatic author as a writer who aspires to express in words that which is profoundly wordless: the encounters between people outside of the ideological categories and discourses of their language.

- The present study deals with the work and practice of three Scandinavian translators, namely Kjell Olaf Jensen (Norwegian), Marianne Öjerskog (Swedish) and Agnete Dorph Stjernfelt (Danish). The main question of the thesis is what strategies the translators use when translating culture-specific elements from French and English. Theoretically the thesis positions itself within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and draws upon system theories as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture. The method consists of a source text – target text analysis, using a somewhat modified version of Pedersen’s (2007) method identifying seven translation strategies, namely (1) retention, (2) specification, (3) direct translation, (4) generalization, (5) substitution, (6) omission and (7) official equivalent. In this thesis the three former and the official equivalent are categorized as “adequate”, whereas generalization, substitution and omission are categorized as “acceptable” using Toury’s (2012) terminology. Six different types of culture-specific elements are investigated, namely (1) titles, address and professional titles, (2) currencies, (3) weights and measures, (4) literature and music, (5) education, and (6) names. In addition to this analysis, interviews with the three translators were carried out. Results show that there are both similarities and dissimilarities in the translators’ choices of translation strategies. It also turns out that the strategies used to a great extent depend on the culture-specific element in question and hardly ever on the source language. Results also suggest that the higher the translators’ amount of accumulated total capital, the more likely it is that they adopt a heterodoxic translation strategy. Jensen and Stjernfelt are more often positioned at one of the two extremes of the adequacy–acceptability axis than is the case for Öjerskog. Moreover, results from the interviews and the text analyses show that there are a number of norms that govern the translators’ practices. The translatorial practice is to manoeuver in a field governed by norms in order to produce the best possible target texts – target texts that are true to the original and conform to domestic literary standards.

- John von Neumann var ett för de allra flesta okänt ungerskt underbarn av judisk härkomst som sedermera flydde undan nazisterna till USA, där han dog 1957. Han var ett matematiskt universalgeni som gav viktiga, för att inte säga avgörande, bidrag till fysikens, biologins, data- och samhällsvetenskapens och meteorologins (och därmed klimatvetenskapens) utveckling under 1900-talet. Vid sidan av den mer allmänt kände Alan Turing föranstaltade han det som vi idag lär känna som A.I. och teoretiserade tidigt om hur man kunde tänka på maskiner som livsformer analogt med biologiska – en idé som idag ingår både i evolutionsbiologiska verktygslådor liksom i visioner och mardrömsscenarier om en teknologisk singularitet bortom vilken generella A.I. dominerar och, i värsta fall, tränger ut människoarten. Det är denne märkliga och skrämmande person Benjamín Labatuts välskrivna roman sätter i centrum för en berättelse om gränslandet mellan genialitet och galenskap, vetenskap och teknik från förra sekelskiftet till nu, logikseminariernas tankelekar och konkret global politisk utveckling på liv och död. Romanen är pärlande klart översatt av Anna Petronella Foultier. Man behöver nog ha ett visst intresse för vetenskap, teknik och/eller global politik för att uppskatta den fullt ut, men mycket sådant förklaras under hand på ett skenbart enkelt vis, så jättestora kunskaper behövs inte.

- I den här rapporten redovisas en fallstudie av litterär flerspråkighet och språkväxling utifrån Mikael Niemis roman Mannen som dog som en lax (2006). Romanen utspelar sig huvudsakligen i svenska Tornedalen, där många människor är tvåspråkiga och talar både meänkieli och svenska. Sändaren anser sig inte vara tvåspråkig och det är sannolikt inte heller flertalet tänkta mottagare. Däremot är språkliga förhållanden centrala för romanens tema. Svenska är huvudspråk i romanen och inslag på meänkieli/finska och andra språk svarar för en mindre del av textmassan. I det undersökta materialet, som utgör cirka hälften av det totala antalet textsidor i romanen, dominerar implicit språkväxling i form av metaspråkliga kommentarer och kontextuella ledtrådar. Den klart vanligaste typen av explicit språkväxling är svenska > meänkieli/finska. Explicit språkväxling markeras mestadels i texten, vanligen med kursiv stil och/eller översättning till svenska, och den uppträder främst i romanens dialog. Det är ovanligt med morfologisk integrering av belägg för explicit språkväxling i huvudspråket svenska, medan det är mer vanligt med syntaktisk integrering. Denna förekommer till största delen i olika former av anföring. I materialet finns exempel på att språkväxling används för att försöka återge ett autentiskt språkbruk och skildra en autentisk språkmiljö. Därtill finns exempel på att Tornedalen, tornedalingar och meänkieli mer skildras som exotiska fenomen jämfört med majoritetssamhället och människor som hör hemma i detta. Likaså finns det exempel på att läsare, beroende på sina kunskaper om Tornedalen, dess förhållanden och meänkieli/finska, kan inkluderas eller exkluderas i partier av Mannen som dog som en lax genom olika språkväxlingsstrategier som Mikael Niemi använder.

- To what extent is working-class literature compatible with religious faith? Wide-spread conceptions of working-class literature exclude this connection, but in the first working-class prose in the early 1900s – in spite of a beginning secularization – Christianity was the official religion, the Bible was a living cultural heritage and the working-class movement and the religious revivalists exchanged members. So, what might a Christian working-class literature look like? How the Christian radical Mathilda Roos’ (1852–1908) fiction relates to that issue is what is investigated in this article. Roos had attracted much attention and debate in her time. As a professed Chris-tian and social radical, she also depicted working-class issues. This article focuses on the intersection of Christianity and class-perspective in the short novel Strejken på Bergstomta [The Strike on Bergstomta] (1892), and to what extent this work might cor-respond to some given or possible conceptions of working-class literature.

We Call upon the Author : Contemporary Biofiction and Fyodor Dostoevsky

- This thesis studies fictional representations of Fyodor Dostoevsky in contemporary biofiction. The aim of the study is to present an intermedial theoretical framework for biofiction, a genre defined as fictional biographical and often metafictional narratives in which a biographical subject serves as the focal point for the story or plays a role integral to the narrative. Drawing on contributions from prior studies within different areas—biopics, the biographical novel, intermediality, transmedial narratology—the thesis identifies the most salient tenets of an increasingly important and ubiquitous genre—its fictional, intermedial, and metafictional properties—to suggest a medium-spanning definition. From this intermedial definition of the genre, it is suggested that biofiction studies should move beyond medium-specific analysis. By situating the genre firmly within the realm of fiction, the thesis underlines the fact that it is exactly the fictional element that allows the genre to open up important ways to engage with a certain biographical subject. Overall, the biofiction definition presented in the thesis is inspired by Jacques Derrida’s différance.Arguing that contemporary biofiction arose from the larger aporetic shift in theory and fiction in the 1960s, which was directed toward various presuppositions undergirding epistemological, metaphysical, and ontological projects, it is contended that biofiction fictionalizes subjects to engage with and reassess the assumptions that suffuse our understanding of the subject. From their metafictional perspective, biofictions also employ subjects for various purposes to interrogate contemporary issues. Biofictions are thus turned toward both a historical moment and its own contemporary context. Buttressed by the intermedial perspective, it is argued that biofictions often employ sustained intermedial strategies—for instance, intermedial references and formal imitation—to engage not only with artistic subjects such as Dostoevsky and their work but also with the premises of creating art.The thesis centers on five Dostoevsky biofictions within film and literature: Aleksandr Zarkhi’s biopic Twenty-Six Days from the Life of Dostoevsky (1980), Leonid Tsypkin’s novel Summer in Baden-Baden (1982), J. M. Coetzee’s novel The Master of Petersburg (1994), Lara Vapnyar’s novel Memoirs of a Muse (2006), and Vladimir Khotinenko’s television series Dostoevsky (2010). As contemporary biofictions, these fictional representations of Dostoevsky were all produced or written in the wake of the aforementioned aporetic shift and therefore comprise examples of the reflexive and metacritical form of biofiction that is discussed in the thesis. The inclusion of Dostoevsky biofictions is, in part, connected with the various critical perceptions of the writer; it is maintained that biofictions such as those analyzed in the thesis proffer new readings of issues that have been overlooked or have not received due attention, such as how Dostoevsky engaged with and augmented the rivalry polemics of his day; the ways in which his conceptualization of Russian identity rested as much on inclusion as exclusion; how Dostoevsky has been employed to propagate certain models of the muse, the genius, and canonicity; and how, in today’s Russia, the writer is employed to embody and express the hyperreal politics of Vladimir Putin’s administration.

- Mit dem Begriff der Leseszene knüpft vorliegender Band an den bereits etablierten Begriff der Schreibszene an und nähert sich einer theoretischen Bestimmung der Leseszene von den Lektüren her. Poetische und poetologische, (literatur-)geschichtliche sowie materiale und auch mediale Dimensionen werden anhand einer Vielzahl beispielhafter Szenen des Lesens vom 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt stehen das (Lese-)Begehren ebenso wie die Bedingungen und die Schauplätze der Lektüre, ihr Personal sowie eine Vielzahl an Praktiken, Gegenständen und Gesten des Lesens. - Idag beräknas 47 miljoner människor i världen ha en demenssjukdom. År 2050 är prognosen att siffran tangerar 131-miljonersstrecket. I kölvattnet på denna utveckling har det under de senaste decennierna gått att urskilja en ”cultural dementia boom”. Demens har blivit en sjukdom som inte bara är förbehållen ett biomedicinsk intresse, utan ägnas stor uppmärksamhet i kulturen överlag. Papret fokuserar på denna kulturella demensboom i en svensk kontext med utgångspunkt i tre litterära anhörigberättelser om demenssjukdom utgivna under 2000-talet: Marie Petersons Du tror du vet allting (2004), Anna-Karin Palms Jag skriver över ditt ansikte (2021) och Jonas Bruns Hon minns inte (2021). Utmärkande för dessa berättelser är författarnas strävan efter att komma underfund med hur det som en gång varit så nära – deras demenssjuka mödrar – under sjukdomsförloppet successivt förvandlas och rör sig längre och längre bort, in i glömskan. Sammantagna reser berättelserna därmed en rad intressanta frågor som tangerar problemområdet närhet och distans: Hur förhåller de sig till de föreställningar om demens som förmedlas i kulturen överlag? Lägger de sig nära dessa större kulturella berättelser eller intar de distans? Hur väljer de tre författarna att gestalta demenssjukdomen och vad den gör med dem själva och med deras demenssjuka mödrar? Vad innebär det att med språket och minnet som verktyg försöka fånga och hålla fast det som i ljuset av sjukdomen obönhörligen inte låter sig fångas och fasthållas? Det senare är en ur etisk synvinkel akut fråga som dessa demensberättelser aktualiserar och som kan sägas gälla sjukdomsberättelser överlag.

It includes a general bibliographical study and also a more detailed translation analysis about the Miffy-books by Dutch picture book artits Dick Bruna. In order to analyse how both words and images are translated, multimodal text analysis is integrated as a tool in the translation analysis.

- This book explores the concept of digital epistemology. In this context, the digital will not be understood as merely something that is linked to specific tools and objects, but rather as different modes of thought. For example, the digital within the humanities is not just databases and big data, topic modelling and speculative visualizations; nor are the objects limited to computer games, other electronic works, or to literature and art that explicitly relate to computerization or other digital aspects. In what way do digital tools and expressions in the 1960s differ to the ubiquitous systems of our time? What kind of artistic effects does this generate? Is the present theoretical fascination for materiality an effect or a reaction to a digitization? Above all: how can early modern forms such as the cabinets of curiosity, emblem books and the archival principle of pertinence contribute to the analyses of contemporary digital forms?

- Francis Ponge, dans ses « Fragments métatechniques » (1922), pose cette question rhétorique au sujet de l’étymologie : « Quelle science est plus nécessaire au poète ? ». L’intérêt de Ponge pour l’histoire des mots se manifeste de diverses manières. Comme nous l’avons étudié précédemment (Romeborn 2013), la syllepse, c’est-à-dire l’emploi d’une occurrence de mot dans deux sens différents, est une figure très présente dans son œuvre ; or, dans certains poèmes, Ponge emploie un type particulier de syllepse qu’on peut qualifier, à la suite de Wahl (2010), de syllepse « étymologique » et qui consiste à employer un mot à la fois dans un sens actuel et dans un sens étymologique. C’est ainsi qu’il est possible de considérer que le verbe « proposer », dans le poème « La Cheminée d’usine » (Ponge 1961), est employé simultanément dans un sens actuel (‘soumettre à la réflexion’, comme dans un énoncé du type « Il propose une solution ») et dans le sens concret de son étymon latin « proponere » : ‘poser devant/placer devant les yeux’ (Romeborn 2013 : 102-104). Mais le recours à l’étymologie ne se fait pas seulement chez Ponge par le biais de syllepses, il prend également d’autres formes, telle l’insertion, dans les textes, de précisions sur la filiation des mots. Les étymologies de Ponge peuvent aussi être « fantaisistes » (Genette 1976) et elles correspondent alors à certaines des procédures caractéristiques de l’étymologie populaire décrites par Béguelin (2002). Nous nous proposons, dans cette communication, de décrire les divers procédés mis en œuvre par Ponge dans son usage de l’étymologie, en essayant également de préciser la conception du langage qui semble sous-tendre cette pratique. Il sera en effet intéressant de noter que Ponge semble adhérer, à sa façon, au mythe d’une langue « originelle » dénoncé par Jean Paulhan (1953).

- This chapter studies the representations and (self-)attributions of emotions to and of different social groups in two pieces of historiography penned in thirteenth-century Livonia, the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia and the Livonian Rhymed Chronicle. The processes of conversion and colonisation of Livonia in the thirteenth century durably shaped the relations between the native population and the arriving missionaries, settlers and crusaders, and formed the religious and ethnic identities of both groups. In order to access the emotional landscapes of thirteenth-century Livonia this study uses the only two locally penned historiographical accounts: The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia and the anonymous Livonian Rhymed Chronicle. The overuse of vro generates so much noise in this emotion’s data that it is difficult to isolate a meaningful signal. However, we can conveniently look at its less frequent but similarly attributed cognate, vreuden.

- Dystopian stories and visions of the Apocalypse are nothing new; however in recent years there has been a noticeable surge in the output of this type of theme in literature, art, comic books/graphic novels, video games, TV shows, etc. The reasons for this are not exactly clear; it may partly be as a result of post 9/11 anxieties, the increasing incidence of extreme weather and/or environmental anomalies, chaotic fluctuations in the economy and the uncertain and shifting political landscape in the west in general. Investigating this highly topical and pervasive theme from interdisciplinary perspectives this volume presents various angles on the main topic through critical analyses of selected works of fiction, film, TV shows, video games and more.

- The Íslendingasögur provide a great wealth of personal names, both of historical and possibly fictional nature, which allows for an examination of historical and literary name-giving practices before and during the saga-writing age. Prosoponyms – personal names – in Old Norse sources have only been studied to a limited extent and very rarely in the context of the Íslendingasögur, which is surprising given the sheer amount of personal names mentioned in the Sagas.Personal names do not only function as identifiers for individuals but also serve as mirrors of the society and culture using them. Personal names are reflections of the community that gives these names to individuals. As such, these personal names can express family ties and affiliations to a certain group of people, and both individual and communal identity. It is therefore worth examining the personal names in the Íslendingasögur from the perspective of socio-onomastics to explore the social, cultural and identity related implications of name-giving traditions and practices, especially in the context of Icelandic identity. The Íslendingasögur often denote an elusive difference in Scandinavian/Norwegian and Icelandic identity and naming traditions are not to be forgotten as a contributing factor of these differences in perceived identity. A socio-onomastic analysis of the personal names mentioned in the Íslendingasögur has not only the potential for further insight into the sense of community and Icelandic identity during the saga-writing age but also furthers the advancement of historical and literary socio-onomastics in the field of Old Norse Studies.
