  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Moderna Språk. - 2000-3560. ; 110, s. 108-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The background material of the study consists of articles about French literature gathered between 2010 and 2014 in the Swedish press. The aim of the article is to isolate the most widely discussed French literature from France in the Swedish press during the period, in order to explore why the transfer of this literature persists over time, how it is perceived, and which type of mediators bring about this transmission. The study raises questions about the image of French literature in Swedish media, Sweden’s impact on the transnational circulation of literature, and the use of French literature to place Sweden on the literary map.The results of the reception study show that French literature is presented as both aesthetically disruptive with innovative features and as a normative and traditional model. It incarnates an image of tradition as well as of modernity. French literature from France is principally mediated by orthodox journalists with a consistent symbolic capital, and the posture of these journalists is analyzed through Sapiro’s model, inspired by Bourdieu. The orthodox journalists manage to redirect the symbolic capital inherent to consecrated French literature at three levels: national, personal, and transnational. Firstly, the importation of French literature increases Swedish literature’s symbolic capital. Secondly, this transfer allows for an auto-consecration of the orthodox journalists themselves. Thirdly, this use of highly valued imported literature engenders a supplementary consecration (surconsecration) of a national literature and its dominating language. In conclusion, these observed bilateral literary exchanges show the often overlooked importance of peripheral countries in transnational literary transmission. The results modify Casanova’s (2002) model, since they display the impact on the market from the margins. The transfer of central national literatures in dominating languages towards peripheral countries allows for dominated languages and minor national literatures to take an active part in the construction and reconstruction of the relations on the global literary map.

  • Travelling objects : modernity and materiality in British Colonial travel literature about Africa
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study examines the functions of objects in a selection of British colonial travel accounts about Africa. The works discussed were published between 1863 and 1908 and include travelogues by John Hanning Speke, Verney Lovett Cameron, Henry Morton Stanley, Mary Henrietta Kingsley, Ewart Scott Grogan, Mary Hall and Constance Larymore. The author argues that objects are deeply involved in the construction of pre-modern and modern spheres that the travelling subject moves between. The objects in the travel accounts are studied in relation to a contextual background of Victorian commodity and object culture, epitomised by the 1851 Great Exhibition and the birth of the modern anthropological museum. The four analysis chapters investigate the roles of objects in ethnographical and geographical writing, in ideological discussions about the transformative powers of colonial trade, and in narratives about the arrival of the book in the colonial periphery. As the analysis shows, however, objects tend not to behave as they are expected to do. Instead of marking temporal differences, descriptions of objects are typically unstable and riddled with contradictions and foreground the ambivalence that characterises colonial literature.

  • A Corpus Stylistic Analysis of Development in Hemingway's Literary Production
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Hemingway Review. - : The Ernest Hemingway Foundation. - 1548-4815. ; 40:2, s. 71-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes an attempt at introducing the quantitative perspective available through corpus stylistics into the discussion regarding Hemingway's linguistic development throughout his career. By building a corpus of Hemingway's fiction, previous statements and research into the author's style are explored through part-of-speech tagging and diachronic presentations of data regarding word class distributions, sentence lengths, and lexical density. This method combines literary theory with contemporary advances in digital humanities to offer a nuanced investigation of underlying text patterns that are otherwise frequently overlooked.

  • Broken Mirrors: Representations of Apocalypses and Dystopias in Popular Culture
  • 2019
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Dystopian stories and visions of the Apocalypse are nothing new; however in recent years there has been a noticeable surge in the output of this type of theme in literature, art, comic books/graphic novels, video games, TV shows, etc. The reasons for this are not exactly clear; it may partly be as a result of post 9/11 anxieties, the increasing incidence of extreme weather and/or environmental anomalies, chaotic fluctuations in the economy and the uncertain and shifting political landscape in the west in general. Investigating this highly topical and pervasive theme from interdisciplinary perspectives this volume presents various angles on the main topic through critical analyses of selected works of fiction, film, TV shows, video games and more.

  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study deals with the work and practice of three Scandinavian translators, namely Kjell Olaf Jensen (Norwegian), Marianne Öjerskog (Swedish) and Agnete Dorph Stjernfelt (Danish). The main question of the thesis is what strategies the translators use when translating culture-specific elements from French and English. Theoretically the thesis positions itself within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and draws upon system theories as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture. The method consists of a source text – target text analysis, using a somewhat modified version of Pedersen’s (2007) method identifying seven translation strategies, namely (1) retention, (2) specification, (3) direct translation, (4) generalization, (5) substitution, (6) omission and (7) official equivalent. In this thesis the three former and the official equivalent are categorized as “adequate”, whereas generalization, substitution and omission are categorized as “acceptable” using Toury’s (2012) terminology. Six different types of culture-specific elements are investigated, namely (1) titles, address and professional titles, (2) currencies, (3) weights and measures, (4) literature and music, (5) education, and (6) names. In addition to this analysis, interviews with the three translators were carried out. Results show that there are both similarities and dissimilarities in the translators’ choices of translation strategies. It also turns out that the strategies used to a great extent depend on the culture-specific element in question and hardly ever on the source language. Results also suggest that the higher the translators’ amount of accumulated total capital, the more likely it is that they adopt a heterodoxic translation strategy. Jensen and Stjernfelt are more often positioned at one of the two extremes of the adequacy–acceptability axis than is the case for Öjerskog. Moreover, results from the interviews and the text analyses show that there are a number of norms that govern the translators’ practices. The translatorial practice is to manoeuver in a field governed by norms in order to produce the best possible target texts – target texts that are true to the original and conform to domestic literary standards.

  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this thesis is the contemporary literature written by the sons and daughters of North African immigrant families in France. Its main area of investigation is the place of this literature in the French literary field, in the Bourdieusian sense of the term, and the discursive features which motivate the ethnic based label of “Beur literature”. The study has a double approach in investigating both the argument for the socio-ethnic categorisation, and the reception of this literature in the French press. The literary corpus consists of twenty works from 2005 and 2006 by eighteen Beur writers. Thirteen of these works are subject to literary analysis. These are novels by Akli Tadjer, Zahia Rahmani, Faïza Guène, Mabrouck Rachedi, El Driss, Mohamed Razane, Houda Rouane, Nora Hamdi, Nor Eddine Boudjedia and Touhami Moualek, and three autobiographical narratives written by Razika Zitouni, Abel El Quandili and Aziz Senni. The press corpus from the corresponding period covers 14 titles of French national and regional daily papers, 8 titles of weekly general press and 6 titles of periodicals of literary and social debate. According to my hypothesis, the Beur fiction and the autobiographical narratives of my corpus are based on a common discourse that is expressed through certain literary means. A frequent strategy found in the novels is the subversion of French classics. Another feature is the constant referral to the French republican values. The novels share the latter of these two strategies with the autobiographical stories. This can be interpreted as resulting from a communication between a literary discourse and a social discourse which points toward a common ideological foundation. It also reveals the specific “Frenchness” of a literature that is often classified as “francophone” rather than “French” literature. The study of the journalistic reception confirms this aspect by the frequent referral of its authors to their ethnic and social origins.

  • Northern Crossings : Translation, Circulation and the Literary Semi-periphery
  • 2022
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This open access book uses Swedish literature and the Swedish publishing field as recurring examples to describe and analyse the role of the literary semi-peripheral position in world literature from various perspectives and on meso, micro and macro levels, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. This includes the role of translation in the semi-periphery and the conditions under which literature travels to and from that position. The focus is not on Sweden, as such, but rather on the semi-peripheral transitional space as exemplified by the Swedish case.Consisting of three co-written chapters, this study sheds light on what might be called the semi-peripheral condition or the semi-periphery as an area of transition. As part of the Cosmopolitan and Vernacular Dynamics in World Literatures series, it makes continuous use of the concepts of 'cosmopolitan' and 'vernacular' – or rather, the processual terms, cosmopolitanization and vernacularization – which provide an overall structure to the analysis of literature and literary phenomena. In this way, the authors show that the semi-periphery is an ideal point of departure to further the understanding of world literature, because it is a place where the cosmopolitan (the literary universal) and the vernacular (the rootedness in a particular culture or place) interact in ways that have not yet been thoroughly explored.

  • Norden i Europa: Rörelse, resor, föreställningar 1945-2014
  • 2015

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: XX Congrès des romanistes scandinaves, 15-18 augusti 2017, Universitetet i Bergen.

  • World Literatures : Exploring the Cosmopolitan-Vernacular Exchange
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Placing itself within the burgeoning field of world literary studies, the organising principle of this book is that of an open-ended dynamic, namely the cosmopolitan-vernacular exchange. As an adaptable comparative fulcrum for literary studies, the notion of the cosmopolitan-vernacular exchange accommodates also highly localised literatures. In this way, it redresses what has repeatedly been identified as a weakness of the world literature paradigm, namely the one-sided focus on literature that accumulates global prestige or makes it on the Euro-American book market. How has the vernacular been defined historically? How is it inflected by gender? How are the poles of the vernacular and the cosmopolitan distributed spatially or stylistically in literary narratives? How are cosmopolitan domains of literature incorporated in local literary communities? What are the effects of translation on the encoding of vernacular and cosmopolitan values?Ranging across a dozen languages and literature from five continents, these are some of the questions that the contributions attempt to address.

  • Något betydelsefullt : Leonid Dobyčins möten bortom orden i den sovjetiska samtiden
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis studies the 1931 short story collection Portret [The Portrait] by the Russian author Leonid Ivanovich Dobychin (1894–1936?). My main argument is that the principal theme in Dobychin’s writings arises out of the complexities of human encounters. My approach is based on affirmative interpretations that I call “encountering” readings. They draw on critical practices developed by Boris Gasparov, who argues in his 2013 study of Pasternak Boris Pasternak: Po tu storonu poėtiki (Filosofiia. Muzyka. Byt) that the key to Pasternak’s work lies not in the dominant feature of their linguistic texture, but in the momentary states of everyday life that the author captures, and Henri Meschonnic’s Critique du rythme: Anthropologie historique du langage (1982). Meschonnic focuses on rhythm as an intrinsic aspect of the text that requires the reader to participate actively in appreciating the text as a work of art by following the interplay between rhythm, the active subject and what is expressed. Both scholars reflect a turn away from the linguistically informed theoretical approaches that dominated the academic study of literature in the twentieth century. Similarly, I approach Dobychin’s characters on the level of their personal conflicts and everyday lives by simulating an interpersonal encounter in an anti-theoretical search for meaning that is congenial to both the central theme of the stories and the way in which they reveal human encounters “beyond words,” as it were, both within the works and with the reader, through suggestive associations and not yet categorized, “precategorial” experiences in everyday life. The “unoutspokenness” (nedogovorënnost’)—i.e. reticence, a deliberate avoidance of explicitness that Dobychin’s contemporary critics ascribed to his writings and often disparaged as “incomprehensibility”—serves as a starting point for a critical discussion of both earlier research on Dobychin and theoretical approaches to literature more generally. In searching for a dominant formal feature, a ‘key’ or ‘code’, in Dobychin’s writings, earlier scholars have tended to describe it in terms of an anti-aesthetic. The alleged lack of plot, inner coherence and meaning is explained as deliberate, intended to performatively mirror the absurdness and inadequacies, the disorientation and loss of meaning in Soviet reality itself. In this thesis, I argue instead that there is no such lack or incoherence in Dobychin’s works. The “nedogovorënnost’” of his short stories is instead understood as an exact and purposeful way of conveying meaning through what is experienced and shared beyond words in a time that was overburdened with idealistic ideological discourses. At the heart of Dobychin’s stories are moments of fragile human interaction that underlie trivial dialogues and actions in banal everyday existence. The stories let the reader experience the sudden and unexpected human connections that the characters encounter in their everyday impressions. The contrasts and plurality of human perspectives thus perceived evoke a potential interaction beyond societal roles. These brief encounters are presented as something precarious in a Soviet society striving towards a single true ideology. Such a reading suggests that Dobychin is not so much a deliberately enigmatic author as a writer who aspires to express in words that which is profoundly wordless: the encounters between people outside of the ideological categories and discourses of their language.

  • Literature and the Work of Universality
  • 2024
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an age of accelerating ecological crises, global inequalities and democratic fragility, it has become crucial to achieve renewed articulations of human commonality. With anchorage in critical theory as well as world literary studies, this volume approaches literature – and modes of literary thinking – as a key resource for such a task. "Universality" is understood here not as an established "universalism", but as a horizon towards which intellectual inquiry and literary practices orient themselves. In the field of world literature, there is by now a wide repertoire of epistemological resources through which claims to universality can be both questioned and reconfigured. If, at one end of the spectrum, world literature confronts us with the spectre of homogenisation and the commodification of difference under a regime of global capitalism, at another end renewed forms of philological, anthropological and ecological attentiveness to the particulars of languages and texts within the crucible of connected histories allow for defamiliarising perspectives both on received historical narratives and aesthetic practices. Vernacularity emerges here as a central point of reference for constructing the universal from within the particular, the idiomatic, and the experiences of social subordination or complicity.

    • "Poets versus Actors Reading Poetry on Swedish Radio 2020–2021"Following the rise of the poet as the principal performer of his or her own work, in the second half of the 20th century, actors have been criticized for performing poetry as if acting on stage, or for focusing too much on conveying the lyric I. This primarily quantitative study investigates what prosodic differences there are between poets and actors reading poetry. The material consists of 276 readings from the Swedish public radio program Dagens dikt (The Daily Poem), from 2020 and 2021. A set of prosodic measures are produced for each recording with computational aid, and the groups are compared by using descriptive statistics. The differences found in terms of tempo and pausal patterns, though small, suggest that the actors read in a conventionally poetic, expressive style, while the poets are closer to a style typical of prose reading and conversational speech; this might be connected to differences between their respective repertoire – the poets reading newer, longer, and possibly more narrative texts. When it comes to pitch, there are more substantial differences: the poets are more monotonous and their tonal patterns more predictable, indicating a formal, less expressive style. These traits are associated with the highly stylized vocal cliché Poet Voice, which in turn is connected to poetological shifts in the last few decades. In both groups, however, younger individuals (born 1970 or later) and women, respectively, are the more monotonous and predictable; this might suggest a sociolinguistic trend not limited to poetry. Qualitative, close listening to a selection of readings largely confirms the findings of the quantitative investigation. While the frequently idiosyncratic poets tend to highlight form, such as rhythm and tonal repetitions, the actors rather try to convey the content of the poem, in accordance with prosodical and performative conventions.

  • Mångtydigheternas klarhet. Om ironier hos Torgny Lindgren från Skolbagateller till Hummelhonung
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis addresses the work of the Swedish author, Torgny Lindgren (born 1938). Its main focus lies on the all-pervading irony in his work. The use of irony is seen as a unifying trait in Lindgren’s authorship. The development of more complex ironies during the years of his authorship is seen as an effect of his authorship’s thematic development, moving from political satire to existential, ethical and religious matters. The first chapter provides a short presentation of Lindgren’s life and work, and is followed by an extensive theoretical section that is concerned with the interpretation of irony. The interpretational model that is argued for in the thesis states that instances of irony are not apprehended as irony until they are interpreted as such. However, it is also argued that an author is able to trigger this type of interpretation by employing certain textual and contextual stimuli that are socially and culturally determined, thereby signalling that an interpretation of irony is to be inferred. The next five chapters consist of close analyses of the novels that Lindgren published between 1972 and 1995. Here it is shown how Lindgren moves from a pessimistic view of life in his early novels, via a trust in the mercy of God, to a mystical view of God; God as the unification of incompatibilities. It is also shown that, from his public breakthrough in 1982 and on, Lindgren delves deeply into religious questions and the irony of human existence. From this point onwards, Lindgren’s typical “poetics of ambiguity” (such that it is labelled in the thesis) becomes a predominant factor in his work. The most salient feature of this poetics is how Lindgren constantly exploits a movement between opposed positions. He does this in order to show that the answer one can obtain with respect to Life’s existential questions can only be formulated as some unspeakable thirdness that comes forth only in a dialectic play between extremes. It is also pointed out in the thesis that the predominant metafictional themes in Lindgren’s work have an existential significance. In addition to the analysis of how Lindgren employs many different kinds of ironies in order to express his view of the world, his novels are also compared with the thoughts of several significant European philosophers, including Böhme, Spinoza, Schlegel, Kierkegaard and Schopenhauer. It is shown, however, that the thoughts of these thinkers are not completely accepted by Lindgren since it is concluded in the final chapter that Lindgren is engaged in a constant critical discussion of the thoughts of these (and other) thinkers in order to express an ironic view of the world; a world where everything is all things, everywhere, at the same time.

  • African Street Literature and the Future of Literary Form
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: African research & documentation. - 0305-862X. ; :134, s. 12-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This text is about an ongoing research project about contemporary African literature that circulates outside the infrastructures of the global book market. The researchers involved in the project are based at Uppsala University, Sweden, and collaborate closely with librarians at the Nordic Africa Institute where a small collection of ephemeral, often self-published texts is being established. This collection is a part of the book collection at the Nordic Africa Institute’s library, but can be accessed as a sub-collection in the library catalogue. The article is co-authored by one of the researchers and two of the librarians and is organized into two main sections: one is written from the perspective of the researchers who collect and study the material. This section outlines the project, its scope, general research questions and how texts have been collected. The second part is written from the perspective of the librarians, presents some of the possibilities and challenges involved in cataloguing the material and the ways in which it differs from the rest of the library collection.

  • Between Death and Resurrection : Dostoevsky's Notes from the House of the Dead on the Eve of the Peasant Emancipation
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a study of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Notes from the House of the Dead (1860–1862), a semi-documentary rendition of life in a Siberian prison of the 1850s. The work is read against the background of the pivotal historical event coinciding with its writing and publication: the peasant emancipation of 1861. On the basis of materials from contemporary newspapers and periodicals, the dissertation proposes that the years 1857–1862 saw the evolution a public “discourse of liberation” characterized by the fluctuating use of specific symbolism. The act of emancipation is conceptualized as a civic “resurrection” of the Russian people, whose life under serfdom is equated with imprisonment in the “land of the dead.” This discourse of liberation is shown to intersect with Dostoevsky’s text, which incorporates and adapts its central metaphors. Thereby, the uncertainty of the public mood in the transitional period of the early emancipation era reinforces the fundamental ambivalence of Dostoevsky’s poetics: notes of joyous anticipation and triumph are carried over into the work along with strong undercurrents of doubt and disillusionment. The narrative progression towards resurrection, culminating in the book’s final scene of release from the “dead house” of the prison, is undercut and complicated by a network of parallels and resonances.House of the Dead is also examined in relation to the genre of Russian “peasant fiction” prevalent in the decade leading up to the emancipation. Dostoevsky is shown to meet the challenge of truthfully representing the peasant voice in literature both through documentary methods, employing the so-called “Siberian notebook” of his prison years, and through fictionalization, as in the interpolated short story “Akulka’s Husband.” The narration of “Akulka’s Husband” is interpreted as an expression of the frustrated struggle of the peasant voice towards clarity and self-understanding – an unfulfilled, stumbling verbal quest for mental emancipation. It is also argued that Dostoevsky drew on two genres of Russian folklore in order to create an authentic plot and mode of characterization for his “village tale:” the tragic ballad of wife murder and the comic dancing song about the cuckolded husband. The result is a dissonant tale filled with tension, where comedy acts as the catalyst for tragedy, and silence emerges as the chief medium for truth. Finally, the dissertation analyzes the role of popular laughter in House of the Dead, focusing on the multiple ambivalent episodes where comic performance is paired with violence. These episodes are linked with elements of traditional Russian laughter culture and folk theatre. Internally connected through a series of echoes and inversions, they are shown to be integral to the book’s dual trajectories of death and resurrection. In his renditions of comic spectacle, Dostoevsky reveals the existence of two forces of laughter: one destructive and corrupting, one creative and redemptive. While both rely on the irrational, convulsive and liberating nature of laughter, each is representative of a distinct potential in the human soul for damnation and salvation.

  • Ingår i: Tintas: Quaderni di letterature iberiche e iberoamericane. - : Milano University Press. - 2240-5437. ; :10, s. 33-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to analyze the updating of the myth of Isis and Osiris in three works of Contemporary Spanish Literature, «Balada de un día de julio» (1921) by Federico García Lorca, «Pantomima» (1995) by Manuel Mantero and «El hechizo de Iris» (1999) by José María Merino. To carry out this study, concepts such as mytheme from myth criticism or ideal intertext will be used. Beyond the hypertextuality between the first written versions of the myth and these contemporary versions, the study shows how in contemporary texts the value of the siblinghood that sustains the myth of Isis and Osiris endures and is amplified.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this article is the representation of language and identity in Hispanic immigrant literature. It provides a framework for the analysis of linguistic and cultural constructions of migrant identities in literary texts, on the basis of the exploration of the novel El Corrido de Dante, by Eduardo González Viaña. The most significant finding is that González Viaña applies linguistic homogenization in order to stress a common Hispanic identity without effacing cultural, national and ethnic differences, as these are stylistically marked by means of strategic (re)creations of different varieties of Spanish and instances of code-switching between Spanish and English (Spanglish) that require no bilingual competence. The article also sheds light on three crucial language and identity conflicts in the novel: intergenerational conflicts between undocumented migrants and their U.S.-born children; conflicts between Chicano/as and “new” Latino/as; and asymmetric power relations between Hispanics and Anglo-Americans.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Research in African Literatures. - : Indiana University Press. - 0034-5210 .- 1527-2044. ; 51:2, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper begins with the assertion that world literature is in danger of becoming a closed system, whereby literature anticipates its critical reception in both its form and content. Emergent African literary forms are often excluded from the field of world literature precisely because they demand methods of reading that challenge this anticipatory logic. We refer to this emergent literature circulating in African urban spaces as "African street literature." This paper focuses on three such street forms: ephemeral print literature, flash fiction, and spoken word poetry. In all three cases, the literary form registers its situated-ness, and as such its location is co-constructive of the field of the literary text. The methodological intervention that the paper makes explores ways of reading context, material, form, and content as combined and codetermining without losing attention to the literariness of the text under examination.

  • L'esthétique didactique de Yasmina Khadra
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on three novels by the contemporary Algerian novelist Yasmina Khadra, the study discusses didactic and aesthetic features of the literary text. While essentially set in the Arab world, Khadra’s fiction links to western encyclopaedia and journalistic discourse. In relating to this part of the reader’s experience, the novels produce an impression of proximity to the peripheral real, and a sense of responsibility. It is suggested that this interdiscursivity be viewed not as a deviation from literature but as inherent to literary discourse itself; the text comments and constitutes simultaneously. Emphasising the hybridity of literary means and didactical drive, the study proposes that Khadra’s work be labelled “didafiction”.

Who is talking?” Literary multilingualism and literary code switching in Mikael Niemi’s novel Mannen som dog som en lax [‘The man who died like a salmon’]
  • 2012

  • Coloniality and Decolonisation in the Nordic region
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book advances critical discussions about what coloniality, decoloniality and decolonization mean and imply in the Nordic region. It brings together analysis of complex realities from the perspectives of the Nordic peoples, a region that are often overlooked in current research, and explores the processes of decolonization that are taking place in this region. The book offers a variety of perspectives that engage with issues such as Islamic feminism and the progressive left; racialization and agency among Muslim youths; indigenizing distance language education for Sami; extractivism and resistance among the Sami; the Nordic international development endeavour through education; Swedish TV-reporting on Venezuela; creolizing subjectivities across Roma and non-Roma worlds and hierarchies; and the whitewashing and sanitization of decoloniality in the Nordic region. As such, this book extends much of the productive dialogue that has recently occurred internationally in decolonial thinking but also in the areas of critical race theory, whiteness studies, and postcolonial studies to concrete and critical problems in the Nordic region. This should make the book of considerable interest to scholars of history of ideas, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, international development studies, legal sociology and (intercultural) philosophy with an interest in coloniality and decolonial social change.

  • CALL for widening participation: short papers from EUROCALL 2020
  • 2020
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the EUROCALL society succeeded in holding the 28th EUROCALL conference, EUROCALL2020, on 20-21 August as an online, two-day gathering. The transition process required to make this happen was demanding and insightful for everyone involved, and, in many ways, a logical consequence of the core content and purpose of EUROCALL. Who would be better suited to transform an onsite conference into an online event than EUROCALL? CALL for widening participation was this year’s theme. We welcomed contributions from both theoretical and practical perspectives in relation to the many forms and contexts of CALL. We particularly welcomed longitudinal studies or studies that revisited earlier studies. The academic committee accepted 300 abstracts for paper presentations, symposia, workshops, and posters under this theme; 57 short papers are published in this volume. We hope you will enjoy reading this volume, the first one to reflect a one hundred percent online EUROCALL conference/Online Gathering.

  • The Inscribing Environmental Memory Project
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research clusters within the Nordic Network for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies (NIES), the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization (NABO) and the Global Human Ecodynamics Alliance (GHEA), in cooperation with partner networks in the USA, the UK and the Nordic countries, have undertaken a major interdisciplinary research initiative that aims to examine environmental memory in the medieval Icelandic sagas, with a prominent focus on historical processes of environmental change and adaptation. The medieval Sagas of Icelanders constitute one key corpus, among other literary and documentary corpora, to be investigated in this initiative. Anchored in traditional fields of study (e.g. saga studies and various medieval-studies fields) as well as newer and emerging fields (e.g. integrated history and historical ecology, ecocriticism, digital and environmental humanities, etc.), the initiative brings together literary scholars, anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, geographers, digital humanities specialists and environmental and life scientists in a coordinated set of sub-projects. The initiative seeks to foreground evidence of changing environmental conditions in Iceland, Greenland and Scandinavia from the late Iron Age through the pre-Industrial period, with a guiding focus on long-term human ecodynamics and the relations among ecological change and adaptation, on the one hand, and resource management, social organization/conflict and resilience on the other. Numerous IEM workshops organized by NIES, NABO, GHEA and various university networks are taking place in 2013 in Sweden, Scotland and Iceland. This talk briefly sketches how this initiative began and how it has developed over the past year. More importantly, it looks ahead to where we expect IEM to be heading in the next year and beyond.
