  • Scientific Models : Red Atoms, White Lies and Black Boxes in a Yellow Book
  • 2016
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A zebrafish, the hull of a miniature ship, a mathematical equation and a food chain - what do these things have in common? They are examples of models used by scientists to isolate and study particular aspects of the world around us. This book begins by introducing the concept of a scientific model from an intuitive perspective, drawing parallels to mental models and artistic representations. It then recounts the history of modelling from the 16th century up until the present day. The iterative process of model building is described and discussed in the context of complex models with high predictive accuracy versus simpler models that provide more of a conceptual understanding. To illustrate the diversity of opinions within the scientific community, we also present the results of an interview study, in which ten scientists from different disciplines describe their views on modelling and how models feature in their work. Lastly, it includes a number of worked examples that span different modelling approaches and techniques. It provides a comprehensive introduction to scientific models and shows how models are constructed and used in modern science. It also addresses the approach to, and the culture surrounding modelling in different scientific disciplines. It serves as an inspiration for model building and also facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations by showing how models are used in different scientific fields. The book is aimed primarily at students in the sciences and engineering, as well as students at teacher training colleges but will also appeal to interested readers wanting to get an overview of scientific modelling in general and different modelling approaches in particular.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: AIMS Mathematics. - : American Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS). - 2473-6988. ; 8:3, s. 7490-7514

    • Multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) techniques constitute a practical approach for solving complex problems involving multiple and often conflicting criteria. Decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is a popular MADM technique with both admirers and critics. This study presents a comprehensive review of DEMATEL through bibliometric analysis using the Scopus database. This article examined 3,521 papers published in journals, conferences or books between 1981 and 2023. We examined a few parameters for commenting on the performance of the technique. Among them are research outputs, the network of DEMATEL users, implementation subject areas, research zones, financing opportunities and publication hosts and their impact trends. We conclude from the findings of this study that the DEMATEL is capable of dealing with modern problem-solving in future environments. Although the growth of new MADMs is obvious, based on the gathered data, we forecast that more than 776 documents will be published in 2025 using DEMATEL for problem-solving. This expanding tendency will continue in the future. As distinct MADMs have diverse constraints, foundations, computing complexity and standpoints, which result in different performances, outmoded low-performance MADM techniques must be reported by researchers to continue this paper’s objective to minimize ambiguity among decision-makers and practitioners. To facilitate such a comparison in the future, a quantitative performance coefficient was also developed here.

  • Expedited analytical hierarchical process for multicriteria decision making
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ICIC Express Letters. - 1881-803X. ; 16:2, s. 145-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, a procedure to overcome analytical hierarchical process (AHP) limitations was developed and tested, and a tool created via pairwise comparison chart and weighted sum method hybridization was introduced. In addition, a multicriteria decision-making software was selected to validate the constructed hybrid decision-making tool. The software was formulated based on an established decision-making technique. Data for the comparison analysis were obtained from an ongoing research, and output from the comparison analysis provided evidence for the accuracy of the constructed tool. The proposed hybridized method aligned with AHP reasoning but demonstrated a faster process; hence, it was called ‘expedited AHP’.

  • Ordinary differential equation system for population of individuals and the corresponding probabilistic model
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Mathl. Computer Modelling. - : Elsevier BV. - 0895-7177.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The key model for particle populations in statistical mechanics is the Bogolyubov–Born– Green–Kirkwood–Yvon (BBGKY) equation chain. It is derived mainly from the Hamilton ordinary differential equation (ODE) system for the vectors of the particle states in the particle position-momentum phase space. Many problems beyond physics or chemistry, for instance, in the living-matter sciences (biology, medicine, ecology, and scoiology) make it necessary to extend the notion of a particle to an individual, or active particle. This challenge is met by the generalized kinetic theory. It implements the extension by extending the phase space from the space of the position-momentum vectors to more rich spaces formed by the state vectors with the entries which need not be limited to the entries of the position and momentum: they include other scalar variables (e.g., those associated with modelling homeorhesis or other features inherent to the individuals). One can assume that the dynamics of the state vector in the extended space, i.e. the states of the individuals (rather than common particles) is also described by an ODE system. The latter, however, need not be the Hamilton one. The question is how one can derive the analogue of the BBGKY paradigm for the new settings. The present work proposes an answer to this question. It applies a very limited number of carefully selected tools of probability theory and common statistical mechanics. It in particular uses the well-known feature that the maximum number of the individuals which can mutually interact simultaneously is bounded by a fixed value of a few units. The present approach results in the finite system of equations for the reduced many-individual distribution functions thereby eliminating the so-called closure problem inevitable in the BBGKY theory. The thermodynamic-limit assumption is not needed either. The system includes consistently derived terms of all of the basic types known in kinetic theory, in particular, both the “mean-field” and scattering-integral terms, and admits the kinetic equation of the form allowing a direct chemical-reaction reading. The present approach can deal with Hamilton’s equation systems which are nonmonogenic and not treated in statistical mechanics. The proposed modelling suggests the basis of the generalized kinetic theory and may serve as the stochastic mechanics of population of individuals.

    • The acquisition of semantic resources and relations is an important task for several applications, such as query expansion, information retrieval and extraction, machine translation. However, their validity should also be computed and indicated, especially for automatic systems and applications. We exploit the compositionality based methods for the acquisition of synonymy relations and of indicators of these synonyms. We then apply pagerank-derived algorithm to the obtained semantic graph in order to filter out the acquired synonyms. Evaluation performed with two independent experts indicates that the quality of synonyms is systematically improved by 10 to 15% after their filtering.

    • We obtain asymptotics for sums of the form Sigma(p)(n=1) e(alpha(k) n(k) + alpha(1)n), involving lower order main terms. As an application, we show that for almost all alpha(2) is an element of [0, 1) one has sup(alpha 1 is an element of[0,1)) | Sigma(1 <= n <= P) e(alpha(1)(n(3) + n) + alpha(2)n(3))| << P3/4+epsilon, and that in a suitable sense this is best possible. This allows us to improve bounds for the fractal dimension of solutions to the Schrodinger and Airy equations.

  • CONVERGENCE OF FINITE DIFFERENCE METHODS FOR THE WAVE EQUATION IN TWO SPACE DIMENSIONS
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mathematics of Computation. - : American Mathematical Society (AMS). - 0025-5718 .- 1088-6842. ; 87:314, s. 2737-2763
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When using a finite difference method to solve an initial-boundary-value problem, the truncation error is often of lower order at a few grid points near boundaries than in the interior. Normal mode analysis is a powerful tool to analyze the effect of the large truncation error near boundaries on the overall convergence rate, and has been used in many research works for different equations. However, existing work only concerns problems in one space dimension. In this paper, we extend the analysis to problems in two space dimensions. The two dimensional analysis is based on a diagonalization procedure that decomposes a two dimensional problem to many one dimensional problems of the same type. We present a general framework of analyzing convergence for such one dimensional problems, and explain how to obtain the result for the corresponding two dimensional problem. In particular, we consider two kinds of truncation errors in two space dimensions: the truncation error along an entire boundary, and the truncation error localized at a few grid points close to a corner of the computational domain. The accuracy analysis is in a general framework, here applied to the second order wave equation. Numerical experiments corroborate our accuracy analysis.

    • The object of study is a model of nonlinearly perturbed continuous-time renewal equation with multivariate non-polynomial perturbations. The characteristics of the distribution generating the renewal equation are assumed to have expansions in the perturbation parameter with respect to a non-polynomial asymptotic scale which can be considered as a generalization of the standard polynomial scale. Exponential asymptotics for such a model are obtained and applications are given.

  • Equivariance versus augmentation for spherical images
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Machine Learning Resaerch. ; , s. 7404-7421
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the role of rotational equivariance in convolutional neural networks (CNNs) applied to spherical images. We compare the performance of the group equivariant networks known as S2CNNs and standard non-equivariant CNNs trained with an increasing amount of data augmentation. The chosen architectures can be considered baseline references for the respective design paradigms. Our models are trained and evaluated on single or multiple items from the MNIST- or FashionMNIST dataset projected onto the sphere. For the task of image classification, which is inherently rotationally invariant, we find that by considerably increasing the amount of data augmentation and the size of the networks, it is possible for the standard CNNs to reach at least the same performance as the equivariant network. In contrast, for the inherently equivariant task of semantic segmentation, the non-equivariant networks are consistently outperformed by the equivariant networks with significantly fewer parameters. We also analyze and compare the inference latency and training times of the different networks, enabling detailed tradeoff considerations between equivariant architectures and data augmentation for practical problems.

  • EXACT AND APPROXIMATE COMPRESSION OF TRANSFER MATRICES FOR GRAPH HOMOMORPHISMS
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: LMS Journal of Computation and Mathematics. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1461-1570. ; 11, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to extend the previous work on transfer matrix compression in the case of graph homomorphisms. For H-homomorphisms of lattice-like graphs we demonstrate how the automorphisms of H, as well as those of the underlying lattice, can be used to reduce the size of the relevant transfer matrices. As applications of this method we give currently best known bounds for the number of 4- and 5-colourings of the square grid, and the number of 3- and 4-colourings of the three-dimensional cubic lattice. Finally, we also discuss approximate compression of transfer matrices.

  • Homeorhesis and evolutionary properties of living systems: From ordinary differential equations to the active-particle generalized kinetics theory
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: 10th Evolutionary Biology Meeting at Marseilles, 20-22 September 2006, Marseilles, France.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advanced generalized-kinetic-theory (GKT) models for biological systems are developed for populations of active (or living) particles [1]-[5]. These particles are described with both the stochastic variables common in kinetic theory (such as time, the particle random location and velocity) and the stochastic variables related to the internal states of an active particle. Evolution of these states represents biological, ecological, or social properties of the particle behavior. Paper [6] analyzes a number of the well-known statistical-mechanics approaches and shows that the active-particle GKT (APGKT) is the only treatment capable of modelling living systems. Work [2] summarizes the significance of the notion of an active particle in kinetic models. This notion draws attention to the features distinguishing living matter from nonliving matter. They are discussed by many authors (e.g., [7]-[15], [1]-[3], [6], [16]-[18]). Work [11] considers a lot of differences between living and nonliving matters, and the limitations of the modelling approaches developed for nonliving matter. Work [6] mainly focuses on the comparison of a few theoretical mechanics treatments in terms of the key living-matter properties formulated in [15]. One of the necessary properties of the evolution of living systems is homeorhesis. It is, loosely speaking, a peculiar qualitative and quantitative insensitivity of a living system to the exogenous signals acting on it. The earlier notion, homeostasis, was introduced by W. B. Cannon in 1926 who discussed the phenomenon in detail later [7]. Homeorhesis introduced by C. H. Waddington [8, p. 32] generalizes homeostasis and is well known in biology [8], [9], [12]. It is an inherent part of mathematical models for oncogeny (e.g., [16]-[18], [6, Appendix]). Homeorhesis is also discussed in [3, Section 4] in connection with APGKT. Homeorhesis is documented in ecology (e.g., [11], [13, the left column on p. 675]) where it is one of the key notions of the strong Gaia theory, a version of the Gaia theory (e.g., [14, Chapter 8]). The strong Gaia theory “states that the planet with its life, a single living system, is regulated in certain aspects by that life” [14, p. 124]. The very origin of the name “Gaia” is related to homeorhesis or homeostasis [14, p. 118]. These notions are also used in psychology and sociology. If evolution of a system is not homeorhetic, the system can not be living. Work [6, Appendix] derives a preliminary mathematical formulation of homeorhesis in terms of the simplest dynamical systems, i.e. ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The present work complements, extended, and further specify the approach of [6, Appendix]. The work comprises the two main parts. The first part develops the sufficient conditions for ODE systems to describe homeorhesis, and suggests a fairly general structure of the ODE model. It regards homeorhesis as piecewise homeostasis. The model can be specified in different ways depending on specific systems and specific purposes of the analysis. An example of the specification is also noted (the PhasTraM nonlinear reaction-diffusion model for hyperplastic oncogeny [16]-[18]). The second part of the work discusses implementation of the above homeorhesis ODE model in terms of a special version [3] of APGKT (see above). The key feature of this version is that the components of a living population need not be discrete: the subdivision into the components is described with a general, continuous-discrete probability distribution (see also [6]). This enables certain properties of living matter noted in [15]. Moreover, the corresponding APGKT model presents a system of, firstly, a generalized kinetic equation for the conditional distribution function conditioned by the internal states of the population and, secondly, Ito's stochastic differential equations for these states. This treatement employs the results on nonstationary invariant diffusion stochastic processes [19]. The second part of the work also stresses that APGKT is substantially more important for the living-matter analysis than in the case of nonliving matter. One of the reasons is certain limitations in experimental sampling of the living-system modes presented with stochastic processes. A few directions for future research are suggested as well. • Biologists have identified many features of living systems which cannot be studied by application of fundamental statistical mechanics (FSM). The present work focuses on some of these features. By discussing all the basic approaches of FSM, the work formulates the extension of the kinetic-theory paradigm (based on the reduced one-particle distribution function) that possesses all the considered properties of the living systems. This extension appears to be a model within the generalized-kinetic theory developed by N. Bellomo and his co-authors. In connection with this model, the work also stresses some other features necessary for making the model relevant to living systems. An example is discussed, which is a generalized kinetic equation coupled with the probability-density equation which represents the varying component content of a living system. The work also suggests directions for future research.

    • The nonlinear spaces of shapes (unparameterized immersed curves or submanifolds) are of interest for many applications in image analysis, such as the identification of shapes that are similar modulo the action of some group. In this paper, we study a general representation of shapes as currents, which are based on linear spaces and are suitable for numerical discretization, being robust to noise. We develop the theory of currents for shape spaces by considering both the analytic and numerical aspects of the problem. In particular, we study the analytical properties of the current map and the norm that it induces on shapes. We determine the conditions under which the current determines the shape. We then provide a finite element-based discretization of the currents that is a practical computational tool for shapes. Finally, we demonstrate this approach on a variety of examples.

    • We associate certain probability measures on R to geodesics in the space HL of positively curved metrics on a line bundle L, and to geodesics in the finite dimensional symmetric space of hermitian norms on H0(X, kL). We prove that the measures associated to the finite dimensional spaces converge weakly to the measures related to geodesics in HL as k goes to infinity. The convergence of second order moments implies a recent result of Chen and Sun on geodesic distances in the respective spaces, while the convergence of first order moments gives convergence of Donaldson’s Z-functional to the Aubin–Yau energy. We also include a result on approximation of infinite dimensional geodesics by Bergman kernels which generalizes work of Phong and Sturm.

    • Historically, Kohnen and Zagier connected modular forms with period polynomials, and as a consequence of this association concluded that the products of at most two Eisenstein series span all spaces of classical modular forms of level 1. Later Borisov and Gunnells among other authors extended the result to higher levels. We consider this problem for vector-valued modular forms, establish the framework of congruence types and obtain the structure of the space of vector-valued Eisenstein series using tools from representation theory. Based on this development and historic results, we show that the space of vector-valued modular forms of certain weights and any congruence type can be spanned by the invariant vectors of that type tensor at most two Eisenstein series.

    • Since its introduction the perfectly matched layer (PML) has proven to be an accurate and robust method for domain truncation in computational electromagnetics. However, the mathematical analysis of PMLs has been limited to special cases. In particular, the basic question of whether or not a stable PML exists for arbitrary wave propagation problems remains unanswered. In this work we develop general tools for constructing PMLs for first order hyperbolic systems. We present a model with many parameters, which is applicable to all hyperbolic systems and which we prove is well-posed and perfectly matched. We also introduce an automatic method for analyzing the stability of the model and establishing energy inequalities. We illustrate our techniques with applications to Maxwell's equations, the linearized Euler equations, and arbitrary 2 x 2 systems in (2 + 1) dimensions.

    • We discuss theoretical and empirical arguments for a human bias to acquire information individually rather than socially. In particular, we argue that when other people can be observed, information collection is a public good and hence some of the individual variation in the choice between individual and social learning can be explained by variation in social value orientation. We conducted two experimental studies, based on the game Explore & Collect, to test the predictions that (1) socially and individually acquired information of equal objective value are treated differently, and (2) prosocial subjects tend to spend more effort than selfish subjects on individual acquiring of information. Both predictions were supported.

This allows for an accurate description of the phase portraits of planar polynomial systems that are perturbations of Hamiltonian systems. • This chapter presents several solution methodologies for mixed-integer linear optimization, stated as mixed-binary optimization problems, by means of Lagrangian duals, subgradient optimization, cutting-planes, and recovery of primal solutions. It covers Lagrangian duality theory for mixed-binary linear optimization, a problem framework for which ultimate success—in most cases—is hard to accomplish, since strong duality cannot be inferred. First, a simple conditional subgradient optimization method for solving the dual problem is presented. Then, we show how ergodic sequences of Lagrangian subproblem solutions can be computed and used to recover mixed-binary primal solutions. We establish that the ergodic sequences accumulate at solutions to a convexified version of the original mixed-binary optimization problem. We also present a cutting-plane approach to the Lagrangian dual, which amounts to solving the convexified problem by Dantzig–Wolfe decomposition, as well as a two-phase method that benefits from the advantages of both subgradient optimization and Dantzig–Wolfe decomposition. Finally, we describe how the Lagrangian dual approach can be used to find near optimal solutions to mixed-binary optimization problems by utilizing the ergodic sequences in a Lagrangian heuristic, to construct a core problem, as well as to guide the branching in a branch-and-bound method. The chapter is concluded with a section comprising notes, references, historical downturns, and reading tips.

  • Topological and geometrical methods in data analysis
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis concerns two related data analysis pipelines, using topological and geometrical methods respectively, to extract relevant information. The first pipeline, referred to as the topological data analysis (TDA) pipeline, constructs a filtered simplicial complex on a given data set in order to describe its shape. The shape is described using a persistence module, which characterizes the topological features of the filtration, and the final step of the pipeline extracts algebraic invariants from this object. The second pipeline, referred to as the geometric data analysis (GDA) pipeline, associates an algebraic variety to a given data set and aims to describe the structure of this variety. Its structure is described using homology, an invariant which for most algebraic varieties can only be computed numerically using sampling methods. In Paper A we consider invariants on multi-parameter persistence modules. We explain how to convert discrete invariants into stable ones via what we call hierarchical stabilization. We illustrate  this process by constructing stable invariants for multi-parameter persistence modules with respect to the interleaving distance and so called simple noise systems. For one parameter, we recover the standard barcode information. For more than one parameter we prove that  the constructed invariants are in general NP-hard to calculate. A consequence is that computing the feature counting function, proposed by Scolamiero et. al. (2016), is NP-hard.In Paper B we introduce an efficient algorithm to compute a minimal presentation of a multi-parameter persistent homology module, given a chain complex of free modules as input.  Our approach extends previous  work on this problem in the 2-parameter case, and draws on ideas underlying the F4 and F5 algorithms for Gröbner basis computation. In the r-parameter case, our algorithm computes a presentation for the homology of C ->F A ->G B, with modules of rank l,n,m respectively, in O(r2nr+1 + nrm + nr-1m2 + rn2 l) arithmetic operations. We implement this approach in our new software Muphasa, written in C++. In preliminary computational experiments on synthetic TDA examples,      we compare our approach to a version of a classical approach based on Schreyer's algorithm, and find that ours is substantially faster and more memory efficient. In the course of developing our algorithm for computing presentations, we also introduce algorithms for the closely related problems of computing Gröbner bases for the image and kernel of the morphism G.  This algorithm runs in time O(nrm + nr-1m2) and memory O(n2 + mn + nr + K), where K is the size of the output.Paper C analyzes the complexity of fitting a variety, coming from a class of varieties, to a configuration of points in RN. The complexity measure, called the algebraic complexity, computes the Euclidean Distance Degree (EDD) of a certain variety called the hypothesis variety as the number of points in the configuration increases. Finally, we establish a connection to complexity of architectures of polynomial neural networks. For the problem of fitting an (N-1)-sphere to a configuration of m points in RN, we give a closed formula for the algebraic complexity of the hypothesis variety as m grows for the case of N=1. For the case N>1 we conjecture a generalization of this formula supported by numerical experiments. In Paper D we present an efficient algorithm to produce a provably dense sample of a smooth compact variety. The procedure is partly based on computing bottlenecks of the variety. Using geometric information such as the bottlenecks and the local reach we also provide bounds on the density of the sample needed in order to guarantee that the homology of the variety can be recovered from the sample. An implementation of the algorithm is provided together with numerical experiments and a computational     comparison to the algorithm by Dufresne et. al. (2019).

    • The paper proves existence of renormalized solutions for a class of velocity-discrete coplanar stationary Boltzmann equations with given indata. The proof is based on the construction of a sequence of approximations with L-1- compactness for the integrated collision frequency and gain term. L-1-compactness of a sequence of approximations is obtained using the Kolmogorov-Riesz theorem and replaces the L-1-compactness of velocity averages in the continuous velocity case, not available when the velocities are discrete.

    • Our topological setting is a smooth compact manifold of dimension two or higher with smooth boundary. Although this underlying topological structure is smooth, the Riemannian metric tensor is only assumed to be bounded and measurable. This is known as a rough Riemannian manifold. For a large class of boundary conditions we demonstrate a Weyl law for the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian associated to a rough metric. Moreover, we obtain eigenvalue asymptotics for weighted Laplace equations associated to a rough metric. Of particular novelty is that the weight function is not assumed to be of fixed sign, and thus the eigenvalues may be both positive and negative. Key ingredients in the proofs were demonstrated by Birman and Solomjak nearly fifty years ago in their seminal work on eigenvalue asymptotics. In addition to determining the eigenvalue asymptotics in the rough Riemannian manifold setting for weighted Laplace equations, we also wish to promote their achievements which may have further applications to modern problems.

    • We prove that the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator D-g in L-2 depends Riesz continuously L-infinity on perturbations of complete metrics on a smooth manifold. The Lipschitz bound for the map g -> D-g(1 + D-g(2))(-1/2) depends on bounds on Ricci curvature and its first derivatives as well as a lower bound on injectivity radius. Our proof uses harmonic analysis techniques related to Caldern's first commutator and the Kato square root problem. We also show perturbation results for more general functions of general Dirac-type operators on vector bundles.

More generally, we prove perturbation estimates for functional calculi of elliptic operators on manifolds with local boundary conditions.

    • Many models in mathematical physics are given as non-linear partial differential equation of hydrodynamic type; the incompressible Euler, KdV, and Camassa-Holm equations are well-studied examples. A beautiful approach to well-posedness is to go from the Eulerian to a Lagrangian description. Geometrically it corresponds to a geodesic initial value problem on the infinite-dimensional group of diffeomorphisms with a right invariant Riemannian metric. By establishing regularity properties of the Riemannian spray one can then obtain local, and sometimes global, existence and uniqueness results. There are, however, many hydrodynamic-type equations, notably shallow water models and compressible Euler equations, where the underlying infinite-dimensional Riemannian structure is not fully right invariant, but still semi-invariant with respect to the subgroup of volume preserving diffeomorphisms. Here we study such metrics. For semi-invariant metrics of Sobolev Hk-type we give local and some global well-posedness results for the geodesic initial value problem. We also give results in the presence of a potential functional (corresponding to the fluid's internal energy). Our study reveals many pitfalls in going from fully right invariant to semi-invariant Sobolev metrics; the regularity requirements, for example, are higher. Nevertheless the key results, such as no loss or gain in regularity along geodesics, can be adopted.

    • The Branson-Gover operators are conformally invariant differential operators of even degree acting on differential forms. They can be interpolated by a holomorphic family of conformally invariant integral operators called fractional Branson-Gover operators. For Euclidean spaces we show that the fractional Branson-Gover operators can be obtained as Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators of certain conformally invariant boundary value problems, generalizing the work of Caffarelli-Silvestre for the fractional Laplacians to differential forms. The relevant boundary value problems are studied in detail and we find appropriate Sobolev type spaces in which there exist unique solutions and obtain the explicit integral kernels of the solution operators as well as some of their properties. • We prove strong convergence for a large class of finite element methods for the time-dependent Joule heating problem in three spatial dimensions with mixed boundary conditions on Lipschitz domains. We consider conforming subspaces for the spatial discretization and the backward Euler scheme for the temporal discretization. Furthermore, we prove uniqueness and higher regularity of the solution on creased domains and additional regularity in the interior of the domain. Due to a variational formulation with a cut-off functional, the convergence analysis does not require a discrete maximum principle, permitting approximation spaces suitable for adaptive mesh refinement, responding to the difference in regularity within the domain.

Our approach combines techniques from stochastic analysis and infinite-dimensional geometry and provides a novel toolbox to establish local well-posedness of stochastic non-linear partial differential equations.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. • Let A be a separable, unital, simple, Z-stable, nuclear C*-algebra, and let alpha: G -+ Aut(A) be an action of a discrete, countable, amenable group. Suppose that the orbits of the action of G on T(A) are finite and that their cardinality is bounded. We show that the following are equivalent: (1) alpha is strongly outer; (2) alpha (R) idZ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. If G is moreover residually finite, the above conditions are also equivalent to (3) alpha (R) idZ has finite Rokhlin dimension (in fact, at most 2). If partial differential eT(A) is furthermore compact, has finite covering dimension, and the orbit space partial differential eT(A)/G is Hausdorff, we generalize results by Matui and Sato to show that alpha is cocycle conjugate to alpha (R) idZ, even if alpha is not strongly outer. In particular, in this case the equivalences above hold for alpha in place of alpha (R) idZ. In the course of the proof, we develop equivariant versions of complemented partitions of unity and uniform property Gamma as technical tools of independent interest. (c) 2022 The Author(s). • Since the last Ice Age (ca 115 000–11 700 years ago), the geographical ranges of most plants and animals have shifted, expanded or contracted. Understanding the timing, geographical patterns and drivers of past changes in insect communities is essential for evaluating the biodiversity implications of future climate changes, yet our knowledge of long-term patterns is limited. We applied a network modelling approach to the recent fossil record of northwestern European beetles to investigate how their taxonomic and trait composition changed during the past 16 000 years. We found two major changes in beetle faunas 4000–3500 and 10 000–9500 years ago, coinciding with periods of human population growth in the Late Holocene and climate warming in the Early Holocene. Our results demonstrate that humans have affected insect biodiversity since at least the introduction of agropastoralism, with landscape-scale effects that can be observed at sites away from areas of direct human impact.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivation: In recent years, the biological literature has seen a significant increase of reported methods for identifying both structure and parameters of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) from time series data. A natural way to evaluate the performance of such methods is to try them on a sufficient number of realistic test cases. However, weak practices in specifying identification problems and lack of commonly accepted benchmark problems makes it difficult to evaluate and compare different methods. Results: To enable better evaluation and comparisons between different methods, we propose how to specify identification problems as optimization problems with a model space of allowed reactions (e.g. reaction kinetics like Michaelis - Menten or S-systems), ranges for the parameters, time series data and an error function. We also define a file format for such problems. We then present a collection of more than 40 benchmark problems for ODE model identification of cellular systems. The collection includes realistic problems of different levels of difficulty w.r.t. size and quality of data. We consider both problems with simulated data from known systems, and problems with real data. Finally, we present results based on our identification algorithm for all benchmark problems. In comparison with publications on which we have based some of the benchmark problems, our approach allows all problems to be solved without the use of supercomputing.

    • We prove first-order convergence of the semi-explicit Euler scheme combined with a finite element discretization in space for elliptic-parabolic problems which are weakly coupled. This setting includes poroelasticity, thermoelasticity, as well as multiple-network models used in medical applications. The semi-explicit approach decouples the system such that each time step requires the solution of two small and well-structured linear systems rather than the solution of one large system. The decoupling improves the computational efficiency without decreasing the convergence rates. The presented convergence proof is based on an interpretation of the scheme as an implicit method applied to a constrained partial differential equation with delay term. Here, the delay time equals the used step size. This connection also allows a deeper understanding of the weak coupling condition, which we accomplish to quantify explicitly.

    • It is known that a C*-algebra with the Global Glimm Property is nowhere scattered (it has no elementary ideal-quotients), and the Global Glimm Problem asks if the converse holds. We provide a new approach to this long-standing problem by showing that a C*-algebra has the Global Glimm Property if and only if it is nowhere scattered and its Cuntz semigroup is ideal -filtered (the Cuntz classes generating a given ideal are downward directed) and has property (V) (a weak form of being sup-semilattice ordered). We show that ideal-filteredness and property (V) are automatic for C*- algebras that have stable rank one or real rank zero, thereby recovering the solutions to the Global Glimm Problem in these cases. We also use our approach to solve the Global Glimm Problem for new classes of C*-algebras.

In particular, we construct solutions that describe a thin shell of equally charged particles concentrating arbitrarily close to the origin and which give rise to charge densities and electric fields as large as one desires at some finite time. We show that these solutions exist even for arbitrarily small initial data or any desired mass. In the latter case, the time at which solutions concentrate can also be made arbitrarily large. As the constructed solutions are spherically-symmetric, they also satisfy the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system and thus our results apply to the latter system as well.
