  • A middlebox control plane framework for wireless and mobile IP networks
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 2004 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops, 2004 (ICPP 2004 Workshops). - New York : IEEE conference proceedings. ; , s. 322-329
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In wireless and mobile IP networks there is a need to support a set of functions that are related to wireless QoS provisioning, resource optimizations, mobility and security management and operator policy enforcement. These requirements have lead to the frequent usage of so called middleboxes including header/payload compressors, performance enhancement proxies, tunnel endpoints, packet filters and redirectors, QoS schedulers and others. Unfortunately, the increasing usage of these types of devices often leads to undesirable artifacts called feature interactions. In this paper we propose a framework that aims to coordinate the operation of middleboxes such that feature interactions are avoided. The three main ideas are (1) the separation of the control plane from the distributed network nodes, (2) the usage of a middlebox function independent horizontal protocol that allows mobile hosts to communicate their desired service requests to the network and (3) the usage of a vertical protocol between the network control and user planes. We present two examples in which this framework helps eliminate the risk for feature interactions. We comment on the relationship between the end-to-end principle and this framework. Finally, we discuss how future middleboxes can fit into this framework.

  • Case-based entrepreneurship education in and for the Nordic region
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Reframing the Case Method in Entrepreneurship Education.. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781800881143 - 9781800881150 ; , s. 2-17
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The case method provides entrepreneurship educators with great potential to be entrepreneurial and to think outside the box when adjusting the case method for increased entrepreneurial learning. This chapter provides the theoretical background of case-based entrepreneurship education and a debate on context in case teaching in general and the Nordic countries in particular. Further the chapter provides a synopsis and reflections of how the chapters in this book discuss the design and utilization of cases through 2 parts. Part 1 includes theoretical perspectives, discussions, and practical procedures on how the case method and case activities can be reframed and approached in entrepreneurship education in general and for experiential learning in particular. Part 2 contributes with a collection of Nordic entrepreneurship cases with accompanying teaching notes. We believe that this book is of great inspiration for entrepreneurship educators wanting to use the case method in their teaching.

  • Relationship development patterns of university-based start-ups
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: A Research Agenda for the Entrepreneurial University. ; , s. 207-228
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the present chapter, we focus on how start-ups become embedded in the university and industry context(s) in order to suggest a research agenda for a more systemic approach to university and industry actors when studying start-up development in entrepreneurial universities. More specifically, the story should not end in business formation but an entrepreneurial university also has roles in the further development of start-ups originating both from the university and industry. We base our suggested research agenda on a case study of the automotive and transport cluster in Western Sweden, which is established as both an academic context and an industry context. We relied both on secondary data about the case as such as well as primary data about the relationship development patterns of the 9 start-ups in the cluster. We identified 5 different patterns of how start-ups become embedded. Arguing that the development and success of university-based start-ups have to be understood in terms of how they embed in their context(s) entails several important implications for further studies connected to additional details of the development patterns, the roles universities play in the networking and embedding of start-ups and the design of collaborative platforms for collaboration between various actors.

E. M. Aalbers & Katarina Eckerberg ChapterFirst Online: 01 January 20122144 Accesses2 Citations2 AltmetricAbstractThis chapter examines the analyses and strategies presented for each of the case studies in Chaps. 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 and presents a comparison in order to draw out the main findings which may provide possible solutions for policy makers working in other regions. As explained in Chap. 1, there are a range of particular policy challenges in the urban fringe. The policies of several adjacent municipalities or local authorities may be combined and managed by an indirectly elected regional authority, while different national and EU-level sectoral and regional policies frequently interfere with each other in such areas. Problems of implementation deficits with sector-based strategies are commonplace following institutional fragmentation, calling for increased co-ordination and better integration mechanisms (Tatenhove et al. 2000).

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Companion to World Literary Journalism. - London : Routledge. - 9780429331923 - 9780367355241 ; , s. 107-117
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Tysk höst (German Autumn) is perhaps the most famous Swedish reportage book from the twentieth century. It was written as a series of reportages by the young author Stig Dagerman and depicts the life of ordinary people in Germany in 1946. Themes such as suffering, guilt, and feelings of dejection are discussed, framed by an atmosphere of grayness. The reader is invited to empathize, not with certain individuals but rather with anyone who is cold, hungry, and bereaved of their beliefs. This chapter explores how these themes are made universally human by an advanced literary technique. Dagerman links the abstract to the concrete, the argumentation to what he has observed on the spot. This is achieved through figurative language, where key words are repeated, gradually transforming them in meaning and blurring the line between illustrated scenes and metaphors. The result becomes a paradoxical kind of gray expressiveness, where the power of the language seems to contradict the gloomy content.

    •  This chapter examines public opinion regarding European Community integration in the five small but comparatively prosperous countries in the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The evidence reveals a split. On the one hand, there is the positive endorsement expressed in Austria, Finland and Sweden; on the other, there is the negative assessment expressed in Norway and Switzerland. This ambivalence confirms that the impact of centre-periphery location is complex. Moreover, as the Norwegian and Swiss cases indicate, the centre-periphery cleavage within countries is as relevant as that between countries to an understanding of support for internationalized governance.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vegetation of the study area in Chobe National Park is influenced by a range of factors, including inundation by the Chobe River, soil moisture and fertility, and the impacts of different-size grazers and browsers. This chapter focuses on how the structure and species composition of the present vegetation in northern Chobe National Park is related to recent herbivory by elephants, as agents shaping the vegetation, and by mesoherbivores acting as controllers or responders, along with abiotic controllers such as soil type and distance to the river. In the study, a two-way indicator species analysis classified the vegetation data into four more or less distinct plant community groups (i) Baikiaea plurijuga-Combretum apiculatum woodland, (ii) Combretum mossambicense-Friesodielsia obovata wooded shrubland, (iii) Capparis tomentosa-Flueggea virosa shrubland and (iv) Cynodon dactylon-Heliotropium ovalifolium floodplain, named after the TWINSPAN indicator or preferential species with high cover, and the relative amount of shrubs and trees.

  • Ingår i: Reforms, Organizational Change and Performance in Higher Education: A Comparative Account from the Nordic Countries. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030117375 ; , s. 211-234
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter illuminates two critical aspects underpinning university life in the Nordic countries, namely, who gets involved with strategic processes and to what extent these processes affect behaviour across the organisation. Participation in strategy work was found to be unstable, which in turn further weakens the legitimacy of the strategy. The comparative data also show that some academic staff are not involved in the strategy process at all, and hence do not relate their daily tasks to the goals and/or values expressed in the strategy. The importance of strategies appears to lie in recognising the relevant problems, values, and normative postures, including the excellence and relevance of universities. The findings have implications for policy, practice, and future research inquiries on the topic.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Digital Literacies in Early Childhood. - London : Routledge. - 9781138303881 ; , s. 377-390
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on young children’s use of digital technologies and on participation in situated digital literacy practices within and across activities and institutional settings. First, we present a review of research focusing on digital literacy as embedded in children’s everyday lives and on multimodal engagements with and around digital technologies together with peers, siblings and adults. Second, we explore three mundane activities involving different participant constellations, technologies and settings, using an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic approach in order to discuss theoretical challenges related to the idea that digital literacies are situated.

  • The future of greying Europe : Conclusion
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Old age in Europe. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands. - 9789400761346 - 9789400761339 ; , s. 131-136
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although Europe’s population is greying, the future of Europe does not look grey. What can be learned from this book is that old age is not necessarily characterized by frailty and decline, but instead can be a time of self-fulfillment, activity, and social participation. Moreover, we now know that population ageing does not need to threaten extant social and welfare state-related institutions, but instead opens up potentials for restructuring and reinvention. Life expectancy is longer than ever before and living conditions that enhance healthy ageing have very much improved. New technologies and Information and Communication Technologies may assist older people to stay in their homes longer. The growing possibilities to reach a good old age may have given rise to what is sometimes called ‘a silver economy’: an economy with all kinds of new products and services, particularly aimed at the growing share of healthy and wealthy senior citizens. The greying of Europe might, thus, ultimately lead us into a bright and colourful future.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Managing Open Service Innovation. - : World Scientific. - 9789811234491 - 9789811234484 ; , s. 167-185
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The concept of open innovation was introduced by Henry Chesbrough in 2003 and refers to firms' use of inflows and outflows of knowledge to improve innovation processes. The concept has received considerable scholarly attention, but most research has focused on how manufacturing firms can manage inflows of knowledge during their product innovation processes. How outflows of knowledge can be managed by service firms during their innovation processes has until now not received the same scholarly attention. In this chapter, we therefore aim to contribute in filling this knowledge gap by observing an innovation project in tourism during its implementation. The findings suggested that tourism firms reveal different types of knowledge to other tourism firms in non-pecuniary outbound open innovation processes. In this case the knowledge was revealed in joint workshops where several firms participated and in bi-lateral meetings between two firms, and sometimes the knowledge was transferred via consultants or researchers that acted as "knowledge mediators". The findings also suggested that tourism firms decided to reveal knowledge to other firms to improve their image, increase the market size and to sharpen up their own business. Implications for management as well as the need for further research are discussed in the chapter.

  • Ingår i: Organizational Culture and Behavior. - : IGI Global. - 9781522519133 - 9781522519140 ; , s. 1329-1346
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Managers face enormous challenges today to plan the decision rights and responsibilities in order to reach desired IT behaviors which are aligned with business objectives of organizations. This is known as IT governance and is ranked as one of the firms' top concerns. Not surprisingly, it is crucial for organizations to find the affecting factors on IT governance and solve the problems associated with it. Culture in national, organizational or group level is an affecting factor in organizations that can play a role in IT governance and this role is rarely explored in academic research. This paper provides a literature review investigating the influence of culture on IT governance. The research purpose is to identify how culture and IT governance in the companies can be linked together and promote this area for future research. The literature review is done systematically and the findings are classified by using an IT governance framework with three main components of structures, processes and relational mechanisms. The results indicate there is an influence from national and organizational culture on IT governance. However, the number of studies is very few and there is still a lack of knowledge on how culture can influence IT governance. This research calls upon a further research on culture impact on achieving an effective IT governance implementation in organizations.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Information Technology Governance in Public Organizations. - Cham, Switzerland : Springer. - 9783319589770 - 9783319589787 ; , s. 229-252
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information Technology (IT) is widely used in organizations and managers continue to struggle with how to govern IT. IT governance concerns the decision rights and division of responsibilities to achieve value from IT investments. Any IT governance approach is incorporated into a given organizational structure. However in the particular context of public organizations, there is little research on IT organizational structure relationship with IT governance performance. In this research, a case study is done in a public organization to find out how suitable is the organizational structure of the IT department is in relation with the IT governance performance. The results reveal that the IT department organizational structure needs to suit the IT governance performance desired outcomes. In this case, operating as a public organization has actuated the organization to focus on IT governance outcome of effective use of IT for growth. This together with the IT governance archetypes of this public organization for different IT decisions led the IT department leaders to adopt a matrix organizational structure.

  • An Introduction to Piezoelectric and Thermoelectric Materials
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Energy Materials. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811644801 ; , s. 1-18
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Materials may demonstrate electromagnetism and thermomechanics coupling. Although we benefit from this coupling in our modern lives, comprehending this coupling is challenging. We intuitively understand that temperature increase causes an expansion in polymers and alloys. Typical example is a plastic water bottle left in the sun, the expansion is visible by naked eyes. Yet it is more abstract to consider that an electric field may create a deformation or even a temperature change. Electromagnetic fields are more abstract since our senses fail to be sensitive to these physical quantities. There are indeed materials with so-called piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties and we use them for sensors and actuators. More confusingly, there is a thermoelectric effect relating electric current and heat flux. In order to set the ideas correctly, we explain these phenomena and introduce to the abstract world of electromagnetism and thermomechanics coupling. Furthermore, we provide an inside look to realize how different types of thermal and electric coupling phenomena work and how to model such materials adequately.
