- To achieve a relatively consistent probability of failure for structural elements, most design codes apply reliability based code calibration process. Such approaches commonly focus on the strength of the structural members, which is related to the ultimate limit state (ULS). However in the design of beams the performance of the structural elements is often limited by the serviceability requirements, which are related to the serviceability limit state (SLS) using different load combinations than applied in the ultimate limit state. The current study aims to investigate the reliability for serviceability design for flexural members made of different materials (steel, concrete and timber) according to the specifications of the Eurocodes. Second-order reliability method (SORM) is applied to determine the reliability index for different design situations for beams subjected to bending. The probabilistic models of basic variables for time invariant analysis have been taken from the JCSS Probabilistic Model Code. The characteristic, the frequent and the quasi-permanent combination of actions are investigated and compared. The differences in service reliability for different materials are discussed. The results show that there are differences between the achieved reliability indices in the serviceability state between different materials and that for the given load combinations in the Eurocode the reliability index is often below the one given in the code. Longitudinal characterization of the brain proteomes for the tg2576 amyloid mouse model using shotgun based mass spectrometry

- Neurodegenerative disorders are often defined pathologically by the presence of protein aggregates, such as amyloid plaques composed of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide in Alzheimer's disease. Such aggregates are the result of abnormal protein accumulation and may lead to neuronal dysfunction and cell death. In this study, APPSWE transgenic mice (Tg2576), which overexpress the Swedish mutated form of human amyloid precursor protein (APP), were used to study the brain proteome associated with amyloid plaque deposition. The major aim of the study was to map and compare the Tg2576 model brain proteome profiles during pathology progression using a shotgun approach based on label free quantification with mass spectrometry. Overall, 1085 proteins were identified and longitudinally quantified. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed the appearance of the pathology onset between twelve and fifteen months, correlating with sharp amyloid plaque accumulation within the same ages. Cluster analysis followed by protein-protein interaction analysis revealed an age-dependent decrease in mitochondrial protein expression. We identified 57 significantly affected mitochondrial proteins, several of which have been reported to alter expression in neurological diseases. We also found ten proteins that are upregulated early in the amyloid driven pathology progression with high confidence, some of which are directly involved in the onset of mitochondrial apoptosis and may represent potential markers for use in human neurological diseases prognosis. Our results further contribute to identifying common pathological pathways involved in both aging and progressive neurodegenerative disorders enhancing the understanding of disease pathogenesis.

- Some have argued that more men should play a role in ending violence against women - but what do we know about those men who are already doing so? Using case studies from Spain, Sweden and the UK, this book highlights those men who are already taking action. Examining the social, cultural, political and economic factors that support men to take a public stance, the authors explore what we can learn from their experiences in order to help build the movement to end violence against women. This important study will inform scholars and students of sociology and gender studies, as well as social movements and organisations working to involve and engage men and boys in achieving gender equality.
