  • National security versus moral responsibility: An analysis of integration programs in Malmo, Sweden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Social Politics: International Studies in Gender, State and Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1072-4745 .- 1468-2893. ; 15:1, s. 5-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article proposes that people working with integration projects in Sweden are driven by a wish to help immigrants integrate into the host society. At the same time, however, the practices of multiculturalism tend to reproduce narratives that depict immigrants as threats to the host society and as inherently different from it. This tension can be analyzed through the intersections of a dilemma of security versus moral responsibility. Secondly, this article argues that integration programs in Sweden tend to reproduce and maintain articulations of nation, culture, gender, and race, and thus contribute to the construction of a harmonious and singular sense of the Swedish self.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Neuroradiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1920 .- 0028-3940. ; 60:S2, s. 444-444
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose To investigate multivoxel proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1HMRS) biometrics for preoperative differentiation and prognosis of patients with brain metastases (MET), low-(LGG) and high grade glioma (HGG). Methods Thirty-five patients (15 HGG, 9 LGG and 11 MET) were included. Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Imaging(1H-MRSI) data was assessed and neurochemical profiles for metabolites (NAA+NAAG, Cr+PCr, Glu+Gln (Glx), Lac, Ins, GPC+PCho) and total Lipids (tLip) and macromolecule (tMM) signals were estimated. Concentrations were reported as either absolute or ratios to total choline (tCho=GPC+PCho) and creatine (tCr=Cr+PCr) levels. Voxels of interest (VOIs) in a MRSI matrix were labelled accordingly to contrast-enhancing/nonenhancing lesional, edema, ipsi- or contralateral healthy appearing tissue and the metabolite averages were reported for each tissue type. Multi-biometric analysis with logistic regression, ROC- and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed in SPSS v.24 and postprocessing with LC Model. Results Across HGG/LGG/MET; the average Ins/tCho was shown to be prognostic for overall survival (OS): with low values (≤1.29) in affected hemisphere predicting worse OS than high values (>1.29), (Log Rank

  • Cognitive Function and Variability in Antipsychotic Drug-Naive Patients With First-Episode Psychosis : A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JAMA psychiatry. - 2168-6238.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IMPORTANCE: Cognitive impairment contributes significantly to clinical outcome and level of function in individuals with psychotic disorders. These impairments are present already at psychosis onset at a group level; however, the question of heterogeneity in cognitive function among patients has not been systematically investigated.OBJECTIVE: To provide an updated quantification of cognitive impairment at psychosis onset before patients receive potentially confounding antipsychotic treatment, and to investigate variability in cognitive function compared with healthy controls.DATA SOURCES: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed articles were searched up to September 15, 2022.STUDY SELECTION: Original studies reporting data on cognitive function in antipsychotic drug-naive patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) were included.DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Data were independently extracted by 2 researchers. Cognitive tasks were clustered according to 6 domains of the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) Consensus Cognitive Battery and the domain of executive function. Random-effects model meta-analyses of mean differences and coefficient of variation ratios (CVRs) were performed, as well as meta-regressions, assessment of study quality, and publication bias.MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The main outcome measure was Hedges g for mean differences in cognition and CVR for within-group variability.RESULTS: Fifty studies were included in the analysis with a total of 2625 individuals with FEP (mean [SD] age, 25.2 [3.6] years, 60% male; 40% female) and 2917 healthy controls (mean [SD] age, 26.0 [4.6]; 55% male; 45% female). In all cognitive domains, the FEP group displayed significant impairment compared with controls (speed of processing: Hedges g = -1.16; 95% CI, -1.35 to -0.98; verbal learning: Hedges g = -1.08; 95% CI, -1.28 to -0.88; visual learning: Hedges g = -1.05; 95% CI, -1.27 to -0.82; working memory: Hedges g = -1.04; 95% CI, -1.35 to -0.73; attention: Hedges g = -1.03; 95% CI, -1.24 to -0.82; reasoning/problem solving: Hedges g = -0.90; 95% CI, -1.12 to -0.68; executive function: Hedges g = -0.88; 95% CI, -1.07 to -0.69). Individuals with FEP also exhibited a larger variability across all domains (CVR range, 1.34-1.92).CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Results of this systematic review and meta-analysis identified cognitive impairment in FEP before the initiation of antipsychotic treatment, with large effect sizes. The high variability within the FEP group suggests the need to identify those individuals with more severe cognitive problems who risk worse outcomes and could benefit the most from cognitive remediation.

  • A first search for coincident gravitational waves and high energy neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1475-7516. ; :6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy, particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of merger and core-collapse events.

  • Children of Baldur : Understanding the Construction of Masculinity within Göthicism and the Manhem Society
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Correspondences. - 2053-7158. ; 10:1, s. 167-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article focuses on how a nineteenth-century Swedish nationalistic movement, Göthicism, understood masculinity. The primary example used is Manhemsförbundet (the Manhem Society), an initiatory and educational organization active between 1815–1823. Most of its material was produced by the author Carl Jonas Love Almqvist (1793–1866). The society was at the center of cultural trends and debates in Sweden, notably those about education and how young males can best be of service to the nation. Göthicism and the Manhem Society urged Swedes to look inwards and develop their own national character, arguing that foreign influences made Sweden decadent and weak. Göthicism then sought answers to Sweden’s problems in the pre-Christian past. The Manhem Society attempted to further put Göthicism into practice. The Society developed a structure similar to freemasonry with degrees based on Old Norse mythology, where the candidate was to follow a mythical narrative of the story of Baldur that led from darkness to light. The degrees also included physical training and exercises to shape a manly character. The article argues that the initiations of the Manhem Society were used to create a form of masculinity that was an expression of middle-class ideals about character.

  • Improved limits on dark matter annihilation in the Sun with the 79-string IceCube detector and implications for supersymmetry
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1475-7516. ; :4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an improved event-level likelihood formalism for including neutrino telescope data in global fits to new physics. We derive limits on spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering by employing the new formalism in a re-analysis of data from the 79-string IceCube search for dark matter annihilation in the Sun, including explicit energy information for each event. The new analysis excludes a number of models in the weak-scale minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) for the first time. This work is accompanied by the public release of the 79-string IceCube data, as well as an associated computer code for applying the new likelihood to arbitrary dark matter models.

  • Soil dissolved organic carbon responses to sugarcane straw removal
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Soil Use and Management. - : Wiley. - 0266-0032 .- 1475-2743. ; 37, s. 126-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global demand for bioenergy increases interest in biomass-derived fuels, as ethanol from sugarcane straw. However, straw is the main carbon source to soil and its removal reduces C input, affecting active fractions (dissolved organic carbon, DOC) and C storage. To quantify the effects of straw removal on DOC and C stocks, we built lysimeter system using soil (Rhodic Kandiudox) from sugarcane field. We evaluated four soil depths (1, 20, 50 and 100 cm) and four straw removal rates: no removal NR, medium MR, high HR and total TR, leaving 12, 6, 3 and 0 Mg/ha on the soil surface, respectively. After rainfall, drainage water was collected and analysed for DOC content. Soil C stocks were determined after the 17-month. Total DOC released at 1-cm depth amounted to 606, 500, 441 and 157 kg/ha in NR, MR, HR and TR, respectively. Net-DOC suggests straw as the main source of DOC. Most of DOC in NR (50%) was retained within the 1-20 cm layer, resulting in higher C stock (10 Mg/ha) in the topsoil. In HR and MR, DOC retention was higher within 20-50 cm, suggesting differences in DOC composition. DOC in TR was 40% higher at 20 cm than at 1 cm, indicating C losses from topsoil. Low concentrations of DOC were found at 100-cm depth, but representing 30% in TR. Straw removal for bioenergy production is sustainable, but we should leave at least 3 Mg/ha of straw to ensure DOC production and soil C storage, taking account the DOC contribution to key soil functions.
