  • Mumbai / Bombay : majoritarian neoliberalism, informality, resistance, and wellbeing
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mumbai/Bombay is a quintessential urban expression which represents the questions and puzzles related to Indian urbanity. This book traces the various ways through which majoritarianism and neoliberal capitalist accumulation has reorganised Bombay or Mumbai in India. The book assesses Mumbai's present trajectories and processes as being embedded in its recent past. It looks at these changes by exploring work and labour; health and education; spatial planning and infrastructural development; politics and identity; and shows how financialisation, land speculation, deregulation and informality has impacted the city's culture and everyday living. The contributors to this volume analyse the consequences of these changes for women and men across ages, as they live their material and cultural lives; evaluate the role of changing nature of work, urban infrastructure and planning; determine its outcome for public health and education; and take a measure of its manifestation in the field of arts and culture. The volume explores the processes that reorient these changes, the socio-spatial and political implications of these on the inhabitants of the city, and the resistance and response to marginalisation. This interdisciplinary volume will interest students and researchers of economics, sociology, anthropology, political science, public policy and urban studies. It will also be useful to urban practitioners, planners, bureaucrats, activists and general readers.

  • Risk perception and new age beliefs
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Risk Analysis. - : Wiley. - 1539-6924 .- 0272-4332. ; 22:4, s. 751-764
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is a study of risk perception in relation to New Age (NA) beliefs, including traditional folk superstition and belief in paranormal phenomena, as well as use of alternative healing practices. Data were also obtained on trust dimensions and on personality and psychopathology variables, as well as religious involvement. It was found that four factors accounted for the investigated NA beliefs, which were termed higher consciousness beliefs, denial of analytic knowledge, traditional superstition, and belief in the physical reality of the soul. NA beliefs were strongly and positively related to religious involvement, and negatively to educational level. These beliefs were also positively related to maladjustment and to concerns over tampering with nature. In regression analyses, it was found that NA beliefs explained about 15% of the variance of perceived risk, and that the most powerful explanatory factors were higher consciousness beliefs and beliefs in paranormal phenomena. Traditional superstition and use of healing practices did not contribute to explaining perceived risk.

  • On integrated modularization in heavy-duty truck architecting
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Road transports face increasing challenges with respect to safety, legislations on lower emissions and traffic congestion, as well as numerous business challenges related to paradigm shifts in technology, tightened delivery times and cost constraints. Combination of truck electrification and automation may be utilized to address some of these issues. Electrified and autonomous transport vehicles may be characterized as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). A drawback with CPS is the extensive increase of technical complexity, which introduce new challenges to Systems Engineering (SE). The added complexity is preferably targeted in the product architecting development stage of SE. Product architecting involves conceptual system design, module identification (clustering) and product layout design. A product architecture is the interrelation between physical components and their function, i.e. their purpose. Product architectures can be categorized as being modular, hybrid or integral. A modular architecture is a strategic means to deliver external variety and internal commonality. Modular subsystems enable concurrent development and modularization is, thus, a structured method to manage technical complexity. In this thesis, a new clustering-based methodology and process for heavy-duty truck modularization that integrates technical complexity, company business strategies and physical interference is proposed.  The main hypothesis behind the  presented research is that computer-based product architecture clustering analysis benefit from a quantitative complexity measure, as well as means to represent (model) and communicate product architecture related complexity. A variety of industrial cases of heavy-duty truck subsystems are used to describe the proposed methodology and to verify its performance, i.e. how well the proposed methodology and process supports the SE process. All investigated subsystems  contains synergistic configurations of mechanical, electrical and software technologies, i.e. they may be characterized as CPS. The presented research concludes that the proposed modularization methodology and process is capable of supporting the SE process by improving the quality of the module identification stage, by adding business strategies and physical interference to product architecture clustering. Moreover, it is confirmed that the new methodology is both scalable and flexible, allowing the consequences of different architectural trade-offs to be analyzed independently or combined depending on purpose. Furthermore, the newly developed architectural representations showed to make architectural discussions in general and modularity discussion in particular with and between domain experts efficient. Finally, the case studies clearly shows that the clustering results depend on the relative weights of the different types of component relations that are represented in the product architecture DSM (Design Structure Matrix). However, the importance of these weights are reduced when multiple business strategic and physical interference constraints are introduced.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A modular product architecture is a strategic means to deliver external variety and internal commonality. In this paper, we propose a new clustering based method for product modularization that integrates product complexity and company business strategies. The proposed method is logically verified by a studied industrial case, where the architecture of a heavy truck driveline is analyzed in terms of how it has evolved over a couple of decades, due to changed business strategies and the evolution of new technology. The presented case indicates that the new methodology is capable of identifying and proposing reasonable module candidates that address product complexity as well as company-specific strategies. Furthermore, the case study clearly shows that the business strategic reasons for a specific architecture can be found by analyzing how sensitive the clusters are to changes in the module drivers.

  • Who should pay for humanitarian intervention?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Political Theory. - : SAGE Publications. - 1474-8851 .- 1741-2730. ; 19:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While some suggestions have been made as to how the duty to undertake humanitarian intervention should be assigned to specific states, the question of how to assign the duty to carry the economic and material costs remains underexplored. In this paper, I argue that the most plausible answer to this question is found in a pluralist approach. First, we should look to the Contribution to Problem Principle, according to which the costs are shared based on the historical responsibility of states for the occurrence of atrocities. For the many cases where this principle does not apply or needs to be supplemented, I suggest a novel alternative in the Entitlement-adjusted Ability Principle, according to which costs should be distributed based on states' levels of resources that have been tainted by historical rights violations.

  • More than half the sporadic cases of Hemophilia A in Sweden are due to a recent mutation
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-656X .- 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 80:3, s. 343-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to ascertain how many of the sporadic cases of severe Haemophilia A in Sweden are due to recent mutation, and establish its origin. DNA analysis was performed in 18 randomly selected families with a sporadic case of severe haemophilia A. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns were investigated, two intragenic (Bc1 I, Xba I/Kpn I) and two extragenic (DX 13, St 14) RFLP being used. In 10/18 families a haemophilia-linked gene was found to have derived from the healthy maternal grandfather; on the basis of clotting and immunological assay results, the odds were high (>104:1) for maternal carriership in four of these 10 cases, and for maternal non-carriership in two, four being indeterminate. In 4/18 families a haemophilia-linked gene derived from the healthy maternal grandmother; according to clotting and immunological assay results, in two cases the odds were high for maternal non-carriership. In the remaining 4/18 families no conclusions could be drawn from the RFLP pattern as to the origin of mutation. We conclude that at least 55% of the sporadic cases of severe hemophilia A in Sweden are due to a recent mutation within the last two genrations.
