  • Caught in a trap : landscape and climate implications of the insect fauna from a Roman well in Sherwood Forest
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences. - : Springer. - 1866-9557 .- 1866-9565. ; 10:1, s. 125-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire is often considered a well preserved ancient landscape, subsequently having survived by way of centuries of management as a hunting preserve. Archaeological evidence suggests otherwise, with an enclosed landscape beginning in the pre-Roman Iron Age and continuing through the Romanperiod. Due to the nature of the region's soils, however, there is little empirical, palaeoecological evidence on its environmental history prior to the medieval period. This paper presents an insect fauna from a Roman well in a small enclosure in north Nottinghamshire, on the edge of Sherwood Forest, and its interpretation in terms of contemporary land use. Wells and small pools act as large pitfall traps and mayeffectively sample aspects of the local and regional insect fauna. The Wild Goose Cottage fauna and its environmental implications are also compared with a number of archaeologically and geographically similar contexts.

  • The influence of urban and natural amenities on second home prices
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Housing and the Built Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1566-4910 .- 1573-7772. ; 30:3, s. 427-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper estimates a spatial hedonic model to examine the influence of urban and natural amenities on second home prices in south Sweden, incorporating local and regional heterogeneity. With the results obtained in this paper, several important relationships between amenities and second home prices are revealed and price formation in this particular study region is indicated to be strongly related to place-specific factors, regional context and amenities. Key findings show that natural amenities have a significant influence on pricing of second homes when located in regions classified as rural, whereas access to an attractive local house market is shown to be more important for prices of urban second homes.

  • Ultrawideband MIMO Channel Measurements and Modeling in a Warehouse Environment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications. - 9781467364324 ; 2015-September, s. 2277-2282
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a detailed description of a propagation channel measurement campaign performed in a warehouse environment and provide a comprehensive channel model for this environment. Using a vector network analyzer (VNA), we explored both Line-of-sight(LOS) and Non-Line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios over a 2-8 GHz frequency range. We extracted both small-scale and large-scale channel parameters such as distance-dependent pathloss exponent (n), frequency-dependent pathloss exponent (k), shadowing variance, and amplitude fading statistics of the channel. We also provide the clustering analysis of the channel impulse responses by using a modified Saleh-Valenzuela approach. Our model is validated by comparing the distributions of the root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread obtained from our model and measurement data, respectively. The model developed can be used for realistic performance evaluations of ultrawideband (UWB) communications and localization systems in warehouse environments.

  • Annotating public fungal ITS sequences from the built environment according to the MIxS-Built Environment standard – a report from a May 23-24, 2016 workshop (Gothenburg, Sweden)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: MycoKeys. - : Pensoft Publishers. - 1314-4057 .- 1314-4049. ; 16, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent molecular studies have identified substantial fungal diversity in indoor environments. Fungi and fungal particles have been linked to a range of potentially unwanted effects in the built environment, including asthma, decay of building materials, and food spoilage. The study of the built mycobiome is hampered by a number of constraints, one of which is the poor state of the metadata annotation of fungal DNA sequences from the built environment in public databases. In order to enable precise interrogation of such data – for example, “retrieve all fungal sequences recovered from bathrooms” – a workshop was organized at the University of Gothenburg (May 23-24, 2016) to annotate public fungal barcode (ITS) sequences according to the MIxS-Built Environment annotation standard (http://gensc.org/mixs/). The 36 participants assembled a total of 45,488 data points from the published literature, including the addition of 8,430 instances of countries of collection from a total of 83 countries, 5,801 instances of building types, and 3,876 instances of surface-air contaminants. The results were implemented in the UNITE database for molecular identification of fungi (http://unite.ut.ee) and were shared with other online resources. Data obtained from human/animal pathogenic fungi will furthermore be verified on culture based metadata for subsequent inclusion in the ISHAM-ITS database (http://its.mycologylab.org).

  • The impact of production-dependent geometric properties on fatigue-relevant stresses in laser-welded corrugated core steel sandwich panels
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Welding in the World. - : Springer Verlag. - 0043-2288 .- 1878-6669. ; 62:6, s. 1801-1818
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For bridge deck applications, laser-welded corrugated core steel sandwich panels with dual weld lines per crest and trough have been shown to be highly material- and economically efficient. The nature of welding induces a variation in the geometric properties of the joint that connects the core to the faces. The geometric properties of the joint are the weld width, weld misalignment, and plate gap between the core and the faces. This paper aims to investigate the impact of the variation of the production-dependent geometric properties of the joint on the fatigue-relevant stresses. A secondary aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of contact between the core and the faces on the weld region stresses. Within this paper, the production of four sandwich panels is documented and the manufacturing-dependent geometric properties of their joints are quantified. In order to investigate the impact of the natural variation of the parameters, a parametric study based on finite element analyses is executed. The result of the parametric study shows, among several other findings, that misalignment of the weld line in relation to the core direction can lead to considerable increases in stresses, determinant for the fatigue life of the panel.

  • Modeling the drying of porous material
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The following report presents a mathematical model regarding the drying of porousmaterial. The considered drying technique is fixed-bed drying, where the material is fixed in abed and exposed to a drying gas stream. The drying material is wooden biomass particles. Thedeveloped simulation model is, however, fundamental in nature and thus applicable to varioustypes of porous material. The model is based on coupled equations for air, water vapor, moisture content in theparticles, enthalpy, and pressure. The equations are solved by using the finite-differencemethod. The model predicts the drying course for different drying conditions, and quantitiessuch as temperature, moisture content, drying time and pressure drop along the bed may beobtained (functions of bed height and time). The iterative calculation for moisture content, temperature and water vapor flow requires 17 lines in Mathcad. The computer time for atypical case is only a few minutes. The Mathcad simulation code is appended.Simulation of a reference drying case is presented and the result is discussed in detail. Thedrying process was divided into two phases: an initial phase involving heating of the bedmaterial and a drying phase. The initial phase is rather short, typically only a few minutes. The drying of two common types of biomass material, sawdust and wood chips, issimulated and compared to real drying experiments. Properties such as temperaturedistribution, drying rate and character of the drying zone are well predicted by the model. In its present form, the model gives valuable information of the drying process and agreeswell with experimental data, though some main parameters are possible to optimize further. The model is a useful tool to analyze and evaluate drying processes
