  • Optimal work extraction from quantum states by photo-assisted Cooper pair tunneling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-9565. ; 3:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The theory of quantum thermodynamics predicts fundamental bounds on work extraction from quantum states. As these bounds are derived in a very general and abstract setting, it is unclear how relevant they are in an experimental context, where control is typically limited. Here we address this question by showing that optimal work extraction is possible for a realistic engine. The latter consists of a superconducting circuit, where a LC-resonator is coupled to a Josephson junction. The oscillator state fuels the engine, providing energy absorbed by Cooper pairs, thus producing work in the form of an electrical current against an external voltage bias. We show that this machine can extract the maximal amount of work from all Gaussian and Fock states. Furthermore, we consider work extraction from a continuously stabilized oscillator state. In both scenarios, coherence between energy eigenstates is beneficial, increasing the power output of the machine. This is possible because the phase difference across the Josephson junction provides a phase reference.

  • Vanadium in silicon carbide: telecom-ready spin centres with long relaxation lifetimes and hyperfine-resolved optical transitions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: QUANTUM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 2058-9565. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vanadium in silicon carbide (SiC) is emerging as an important candidate system for quantum technology due to its optical transitions in the telecom wavelength range. However, several key characteristics of this defect family including their spin relaxation lifetime (T1), charge state dynamics, and level structure are not fully understood. In this work, we determine the T1 of an ensemble of vanadium defects, demonstrating that it can be greatly enhanced at low temperature. We observe a large spin contrast exceeding 90% and long spin-relaxation times of up to 25 s at 100 mK, and of order 1 s at 1.3 K. These measurements are complemented by a characterization of the ensemble charge state dynamics. The stable electron spin furthermore enables high-resolution characterization of the systems' hyperfine level structure via two-photon magneto-spectroscopy. The acquired insights point towards high-performance spin-photon interfaces based on vanadium in SiC.

  • Optimal control of hybrid optomechanical systems for generating non-classical states of mechanical motion
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-9565. ; 4:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cavity optomechanical systems are one of the leading experimental platforms for controlling mechanical motion in the quantum regime. We exemplify that the control over cavity optomechanical systems greatly increases by coupling the cavity also to a two-level system, thereby creating a hybrid optomechanical system. If the two-level system can be driven largely independently of the cavity, we show that the nonlinearity thus introduced enables us to steer the extended system to non-classical target states of the mechanical oscillator with Wigner functions exhibiting significant negative regions. We illustrate how to use optimal control techniques beyond the linear regime to drive the hybrid system from the near ground state into a Fock target state of the mechanical oscillator. We base our numerical optimization on realistic experimental parameters for exemplifying how optimal control enables the preparation of decidedly non-classical target states, where naive control schemes fail. Our results thus pave the way for applying the toolbox of optimal control in hybrid optomechanical systems for generating non-classical mechanical states.

  • Optimal charging of a superconducting quantum battery
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-9565. ; 7:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantum batteries are miniature energy storage devices and play a very important role in quantum thermodynamics. In recent years, quantum batteries have been extensively studied, but limited in theoretical level. Here we report the experimental realization of a quantum battery based on superconducting qutrit. Our model explores dark and bright states to achieve stable and powerful charging processes, respectively. Our scheme makes use of the quantum adiabatic brachistochrone, which allows us to speed up the battery ergotropy injection. Due to the inherent interaction of the system with its surrounding, the battery exhibits a self-discharge, which is shown to be described by a supercapacitor-like self-discharging mechanism. Our results paves the way for proposals of new superconducting circuits able to store extractable work for further usage.

  • Self-energy functional theory with symmetry breaking for disordered lattice bosons
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-9565. ; 3:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We extend the self-energy functional theory to the case of interacting lattice bosons in the presence of symmetry breaking and quenched disorder. The self-energy functional we derive depends only on the self-energies of the disorder-averaged propagators, allowing for the construction of general non-perturbative approximations. Using a simple single-site reference system with only three variational parameters, we are able to reproduce numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results on local observables of the Bose–Hubbard model with box disorder with high accuracy. At strong interactions, the phase boundaries are reproduced qualitatively but shifted with respect to the ones observed with QMC due to the extremely low condensate fraction in the superfluid phase. Deep in the strongly-disordered weakly-interacting regime, the simple reference system employed is insufficient and no stationary solutions can be found within its restricted variational subspace. By systematically analyzing thermodynamical observables and the spectral function, we find that the strongly interacting Bose glass is characterized by different regimes, depending on which local occupations are activated as a function of the disorder strength. We find that the particles delocalize into isolated superfluid lakes over a strongly localized background around maximally-occupied sites whenever these sites are particularly rare. Our results indicate that the transition from the Bose glass to the superfluid phase around unit filling at strong interactions is driven by the percolation of superfluid lakes which form around doubly occupied sites.

  • Two-mode Schrodinger-cat states with nonlinear optomechanics : generation and verification of non-Gaussian mechanical entanglement
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-9565. ; 7:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cavity quantum optomechanics has emerged as a new platform for quantum science and technology with applications ranging from quantum-information processing to tests of the foundations of physics. Of crucial importance for optomechanics is the generation and verification of non-Gaussian states of motion and a key outstanding challenge is the observation of a canonical two-mode Schrodinger-cat state in the displacement of two mechanical oscillators. In this work, we introduce a pulsed approach that utilizes the nonlinearity of the radiation-pressure interaction combined with photon-counting measurements to generate this entangled non-Gaussian mechanical state, and, importantly, describe a protocol using subsequent pulsed interactions to verify the non-Gaussian entanglement generated. Our pulsed verification protocol allows quadrature moments of the two mechanical oscillators to be measured up to any finite order providing a toolset for experimental characterisation of bipartite mechanical quantum states and allowing a broad range of inseparability criteria to be evaluated. Key experimental factors, such as optical loss and open-system dynamics, are carefully analyzed and we show that the scheme is feasible with only minor improvements to current experiments that operate outside the resolved-sideband regime. Our scheme provides a new avenue for quantum experiments with entangled mechanical oscillators and offers significant potential for further research and development that utilizes such non-Gaussian states for quantum-information and sensing applications, and for studying the quantum-to-classical transition.

  • Building blocks of a flip-chip integrated superconducting quantum processor
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 2058-9565. ; 7:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have integrated single and coupled superconducting transmon qubits into flip-chip modules. Each module consists of two chips-one quantum chip and one control chip-that are bump-bonded together. We demonstrate time-averaged coherence times exceeding 90 mu s, single-qubit gate fidelities exceeding 99.9%, and two-qubit gate fidelities above 98.6%. We also present device design methods and discuss the sensitivity of device parameters to variation in interchip spacing. Notably, the additional flip-chip fabrication steps do not degrade the qubit performance compared to our baseline state-of-the-art in single-chip, planar circuits. This integration technique can be extended to the realisation of quantum processors accommodating hundreds of qubits in one module as it offers adequate input/output wiring access to all qubits and couplers.

  • Parameter estimation from quantum-jump data using neural networks
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Quantum Science and Technology. - 2058-9565. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an inference method utilizing artificial neural networks for parameter estimation of a quantum probe monitored through a single continuous measurement. Unlike existing approaches focusing on the diffusive signals generated by continuous weak measurements, our method harnesses quantum correlations in discrete photon-counting data characterized by quantum jumps. We benchmark the precision of this method against Bayesian inference, which is optimal in the sense of information retrieval. By using numerical experiments on a two-level quantum system, we demonstrate that our approach can achieve a similar optimal performance as Bayesian inference, while drastically reducing computational costs. Additionally, the method exhibits robustness against the presence of imperfections in both measurement and training data. This approach offers a promising and computationally efficient tool for quantum parameter estimation with photon-counting data, relevant for applications such as quantum sensing or quantum imaging, as well as robust calibration tasks in laboratory-based settings.
