  • Demonstration of Atomic Frequency Comb Memory for Light with Spin-Wave Storage
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 104:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a light-storage experiment in a praseodymium-doped crystal where the light is mapped onto an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition shaped into an atomic frequency comb. After absorption of the light, the optical excitation is converted into a spin-wave excitation by a control pulse. A second control pulse reads the memory (on-demand) by reconverting the spin-wave excitation to an optical one, where the comb structure causes a photon-echo-type rephasing of the dipole moments and directional retrieval of the light. This combination of photon-echo and spin-wave storage allows us to store submicrosecond (450 ns) pulses for up to 20 mu s. The scheme has a high potential for storing multiple temporal modes in the single-photon regime, which is an important resource for future long-distance quantum communication based on quantum repeaters.

  • Towards an efficient atomic frequency comb quantum memory
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Luminescence. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2313. ; 130:9, s. 1579-1585
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an efficient photon-echo experiment based on atomic frequency combs [Phys. Rev. A 79 (2009) 052329]. Echoes containing an energy of up to 35% of that of the input pulse are observed in a Pr3+ -doped Y2SiO5 crystal. This material allows for the precise spectral holeburning needed to make a sharp and highly absorbing comb structure. We compare our results with a simple theoretical model with satisfactory agreement. Our results show that atomic frequency combs has the potential for high-efficiency storage of single photons as required in future long-distance communication based on quantum repeaters. • Towards Efficient Quantum Memories in Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Solids
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis describes experiments aimed at developing a key component in applications such as quantum networks and long-distance quantum communication systems: quantum memories. Quantum memories for light using photon-echo and coherent rephrasing techniques have been developed. The work is carried out on rare-earth-ion-doped inorganic crystals. Several properties are associated with these crystals such as long coherence times and long-lived ground state sublevels that are particularly interesting in connection applications in the area of quantum information science. It is demonstrated the preparation of optical inhomogeneous absorption profiles such that the light only interacts with a specific transition at a selected frequency. Narrow absorbing structures with widths of <100 kHz have been prepared with no absorption in the surrounding spectral interval. Most of the experiments were carried out using Pr3+:Y2SiO5. However, in our search for suitable a Λ-system in the material under consideration, we also performed spectral hole-burning spectroscopy in Nd:Y2SiVO4. As part of the search for host materials for Pr, Pr:La2(WO4)3 crystal was characterized using a variety of methods, such as, hole burning and photon-echoes. Electromagnetically induced transparency was also observed in this crystal. The most important criteria for evaluating quantum memory performance and the most important physical requirements are discussed. After investigating the standard photon echo techniques and controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB) for quantum state storage, we considered an efficient multimode quantum memory protocol; the atomic frequency comb (AFC) protocol. Combs with peaks of widths 100-300 kHz and an optical depth of~ 10 were created by optical pumping inside an emptied region of the inhomogeneous profile of Pr3+:Y2SiO5, allowing us to improve the efficiency of light storage. Light storage combining a photon-echo technique based on an AFC and spin-wave storage have been demonstrated, and an experimental AFC scheme for the storage of weak coherent light pulses in Pr3+:Y2SiO5 is presented. Finally, we have investigated superradiance and slow light effects. Both these effects occur in the high optical depth regime and can influence the memory performance. Under certain conditions superradiance results in the immediate re-emission of the stored light in a single burst of coherent radiation, and inside spectrally structured materials, slow light effects may result when storage is performed.

  • Long coherence lifetime and electromagnetically induced transparency in a highly-spin-concentrated solid
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 79:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied a rare-earth-doped crystal, Pr3+:La-2(WO4)(3), which exhibits a high magnetic-moment density. Although the latter favors rare-earth dephasing, a nuclear-spin coherence lifetime of 250 mu s has been observed, as well as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). This suggests that a broad range of materials could be considered for quantum information applications such as quantum memories for light, where solids are especially attractive. Absorption and dispersion curves are independently in very good agreement with EIT theory. Fano-like profiles have also been observed.

  • Hyperfine structure and hyperfine coherent properties of praseodymium in single-crystalline La-2(WO4)(3) by hole-burning and photon-echo techniques
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 79:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied the hyperfine structure and hyperfine coherent properties of the H-3(4)(0)-> D-1(2)(0) transition of Pr3+ ions in a tungstate single crystal La-2(WO4)(3) by hole-burning and photon-echo techniques. This work is motivated by the search of an efficient three level Lambda system in this new compound with which we could build up a quantum memory. By nonconventional hole-burning experiments, the ordering of the hyperfine splittings in the H-3(4)(0) ground state and in the D-1(2)(0) excited state is obtained. The hyperfine splittings are thus ordered: 24.6 and 14.9 MHz for the H-3(4)(0) level and 5.0 and 7.3 MHz for the D-1(2)(0) level. The relative and absolute transition strengths of individual hyperfine transitions are determined by comparing absorption strengths and by measuring the Rabi flopping frequency as the transition is coherently driven. Free induction and Raman echo decays give inhomogeneous and homogeneous hyperfine linewidths of 57 +/- 2 and 1.25 +/- 0.1 kHz, respectively.

  • Spectral hole-burning spectroscopy in Nd3+: YVO4
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 77:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present spectral hole-burning measurements on the 879 nm, I-4(9/2) -> F-4(3/2) transition in Nd3+ : YVO4. We observe antiholes in the spectrum along with long lived spectral holes, which demonstrates optical pumping between the ground state Zeeman levels. The spectral holes are narrow (homogeneous linewidth of 63 kHz) at 2.1 K with a 300 mT applied magnetic field. We also perform preliminary spectral tailoring in this material by creating a 40 MHz wide transmission window in the inhomogeneous absorption. These results show the potential of the Zeeman levels in Nd doped materials to be used for spectral tailoring for quantum and classical information processing.

  • Storage and Recall of Weak Coherent Optical Pulses with an Efficiency of 25%
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 105:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate experimentally an efficient coherent rephasing scheme for the storage and recall of weak coherent light pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition in a Pr3+: YSO crystal at 2.1 K. Precise optical pumping using a frequency stable (approximate to 1 kHz linewidth) laser is employed to create a highly controllable atomic frequency comb structure. We report single photon level storage and retrieval efficiencies of 25%, based on coherent photon-echo-type reemission in the forward direction. The high efficiency is mainly a product of our highly controllable and precise ensemble-shaping technique. The coherence property of the quantum memory is proved through interference between a super-Gaussian pulse and the emitted echo.

  • Experimental superradiance and slow-light effects for quantum memories
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 80:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of high optical depth phenomena, such as superradiance, are investigated in potential quantum memory materials. The results may have relevance for several schemes, including controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening, atomic frequency combs, and quantum memories based on electromagnetically induced transparency, which are based on using ensembles as storage media. It is shown that strong superradiant effects manifested as decay rates larger than 1/T*(2) are present even for moderate values of alpha L <= 5 and increases as a function of alpha L. For even higher alpha L, effects such as off-resonant slow light is demonstrated and discussed and, finally, the efficiency of time-reversed optimized input pulses is tested. A maximum retrieval efficiency of similar to 20% is reached and agreement with the theoretically expected result is discussed.
