  • Coal free-swelling index modeling by an ordinal-based soft computing approach
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Coal Preparation and Utilization. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1939-2699 .- 1939-2702. ; 43:5, s. 769-793
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coking coal is the most important reductant agent in the steel-making industry and approximately does not have any substitution. Thus, it is globally still on the list of critical raw materials. The free swelling index (FSI) as a qualitative index is used to assess and rank the coking-ability of coal samples. Although the accurate classification of FSI values is one of the most crucial issues in the coke-making industry, it has become one of the most challenging data-driven problems due to the specific difficulties that lie in coal data characteristics. In this study, by analyzing a robust dataset with over 3600 records from U.S. Geological Survey Coal Quality, an insight was obtained into the FSI classification problem factors that have led to the poor performance of machine learning models. By settling the class imbalance at the data level and applying an efficient model training strategy based on the ordinal classification at the algorithmic level, a novel structure for FSI modeling has been proposed. This study also demonstrates direct relation between the model accuracy and the impact of nonlinear feature selection using Mutual Information instead of traditional linear methods.

  • omega-3 Fatty Acids in the Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Humans
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Advances in Nutrition. - : Elsevier BV. - 2161-8313 .- 2156-5376. ; 4:6, s. 672-676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The brain is a lipid-rich organ where docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is enriched and where eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) may have anti-inflammatory effects. The potential role for n-3 (omega-3) fatty acids such as DHA and EPA in the prevention of cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) has attracted major interest for the past 20 y. This review presents our understanding of recent observational, interventional, and experimental studies, with the aim of providing some answers to the following question: Can n-3 FA intake modulate cognitive function during aging? In longitudinal observation studies we mainly observe inverse relations between fish intake or serum concentrations of DHA and cognitive impairment. Intervention studies of EPA and DHA supplementation in healthy old individuals have been negative so far (i.e., after up to 2 years of treatment, no differences in cognitive decline between treated and nontreated participants have been observed). In studies that provided EPA and DHA to adults with mild cognitive impairment or age-related cognitive impairment the data seem to be positive. However, when patients with established AD were supplemented with EPA and DHA it appears no benefit was gained. For studies on healthy individuals, a major concern is that the treatment periods may have been too short. There might also be subgroup effects because of the Carriage of apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 alleles or risk factor burden. Experimental studies appear to be consistently positive (i.e., n-3 FA supplementation in rodents over a substantial portion of their lives reduces amyloid-beta deposition and hippocampal neuron loss and improves cognitive functioning). We are getting closer to providing evidence-based recommendations on fish and fish oil intake to facilitate memory function during old age. In the meantime it is advised to follow the general CDC dietary recommendations of 2-3 fish meals per week or the equivalent intake of long chain n-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA.

  • HATS-31B THROUGH HATS-35B : FIVE TRANSITING HOT JUPITERS DISCOVERED BY THE HATSOUTH SURVEY
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 152:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery of five new transiting hot-Jupiter planets discovered by the HATSouth survey, HATS-31b through HATS-35b. These planets orbit moderately bright stars with V magnitudes within the range of 11.9-14.4 mag while the planets span a range of masses of. 0.88-1.22 M-J. and have somewhat inflated radii between 1.23 and 1.64 R-J. These planets can be classified as typical hot Jupiters, with HATS-31b and HATS-35b being moderately inflated gas giant planets with radii of 1.64 +/- 0.22 R-J and 1.464(-0.044)(+0.069) R-J, respectively, that can be used to constrain inflation mechanisms. All five systems present a higher Bayesian evidence for a fixed-circular-orbit model than for an eccentric orbit. The orbital periods range from 1.8209993 +/- 0.0000016 day for HATS-35b) to 3.377960 +/- 0.000012 day for HATS-31b. Additionally, HATS-35b orbits a relatively young F star with an age of 2.13 +/- 0.51 Gyr. We discuss the analysis to derive the properties of these systems and compare them in the context of the sample of well-characterized transiting hot Jupiters known to date.

  • Toward a Definition of Sarcopenia
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Clinics in Geriatric Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0749-0690 .- 1879-8853. ; 27:3, s. 341-353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The definition of sarcopenia has been thoroughly discussed by scientific stakeholders and industry representatives to increase the clinical applicability of the concept. The pooled consensus from 3 of 5 recent and parallel processes, of which 2 are pending, is that sarcopenia is mainly, but not only, an age-related condition defined by the combined presence of reduced muscle mass and muscle function. Contributing factors to sarcopenia are senescence, chronic disease, physical inactivity, and poor food intake. Cachexia may be considered as one etiologic pathway of an accelerated sarcopenia. The adjusted and extended definitions of sarcopenia promote the clinical use of the concept.

  • ESPEN guidelines on definitions and terminology of clinical nutrition
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nutrition. - 0261-5614 .- 1532-1983. ; 36:1, s. 49-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundA lack of agreement on definitions and terminology used for nutrition-related concepts and procedures limits the development of clinical nutrition practice and research.ObjectiveThis initiative aimed to reach a consensus for terminology for core nutritional concepts and procedures.MethodsThe European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) appointed a consensus group of clinical scientists to perform a modified Delphi process that encompassed e-mail communication, face-to-face meetings, in-group ballots and an electronic ESPEN membership Delphi round.ResultsFive key areas related to clinical nutrition were identified: concepts; procedures; organisation; delivery; and products. One core concept of clinical nutrition is malnutrition/undernutrition, which includes disease-related malnutrition (DRM) with (eq. cachexia) and without inflammation, and malnutrition/undernutrition without disease, e.g. hunger-related malnutrition. Over-nutrition (overweight and obesity) is another core concept. Sarcopenia and frailty were agreed to be separate conditions often associated with malnutrition. Examples of nutritional procedures identified include screening for subjects at nutritional risk followed by a complete nutritional assessment. Hospital and care facility catering are the basic organizational forms for providing nutrition. Oral nutritional supplementation is the preferred way of nutrition therapy but if inadequate then other forms of medical nutrition therapy, i.e. enteral tube feeding and parenteral (intravenous) nutrition, becomes the major way of nutrient delivery.ConclusionAn agreement of basic nutritional terminology to be used in clinical practice, research, and the ESPEN guideline developments has been established. This terminology consensus may help to support future global consensus efforts and updates of classification systems such as the International Classification of Disease (ICD). The continuous growth of knowledge in all areas addressed in this statement will provide the foundation for future revisions.
