  • Towards Bioleaching of a Vanadium Containing Magnetite for Metal Recovery
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Microbiology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-302X. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vanadium - a transition metal - is found in the ferrous-ferric mineral, magnetite. Vanadium has many industrial applications, such as in the production of high-strength low-alloy steels, and its increasing global industrial consumption requires new primary sources. Bioleaching is a biotechnological process for microbially catalyzed dissolution of minerals and wastes for metal recovery such as biogenic organic acid dissolution of bauxite residues. In this study, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to identify microorganisms in Nordic mining environments influenced by vanadium containing sources. These data identified gene sequences that aligned to the Gluconobacter genus that produce gluconic acid. Several strategies for magnetite dissolution were tested including oxidative and reductive bioleaching by acidophilic microbes along with dissimilatory reduction by Shewanella spp. that did not yield significant metal release. In addition, abiotic dissolution of the magnetite was tested with gluconic and oxalic acids, and yielded 3.99 and 81.31% iron release as a proxy for vanadium release, respectively. As a proof of principle, leaching via gluconic acid production by Gluconobacter oxydans resulted in a maximum yield of 9.8% of the available iron and 3.3% of the vanadium. Addition of an increased concentration of glucose as electron donor for gluconic acid production alone, or in combination with calcium carbonate to buffer the pH, increased the rate of iron dissolution and final vanadium recoveries. These data suggest a strategy of biogenic organic acid mediated vanadium recovery from magnetite and point the way to testing additional microbial species to optimize the recovery.

  • Pelvic Ring Injuries and Acetabular Fractures : Quality of Life Following Surgical Treatment
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aim was to study outcome following surgery of the injured pelvis with focus on assessment from the patient’s perspective. All adult patients operatively treated for pelvic ring injuries or acetabular fractures at the Department of Orthopaedics, Uppsala University, starting 2003 were prospectively included and followed with quality of life (QoL) instruments for 2 years. The most common trauma mechanism was motor vehicle accident (MVA). Study I included 54 patients with pelvic ring injuries during the three-year period 2003-2005. The two instruments, SF-36 and LiSat-11, were used. In 45 responders lower than normative QoL and life satisfaction prevailed at two years after the injury. Study II included 12 patients with pelvic ring injuries or acetabular fractures sustained following a jump from height in an attempt to commit suicide. At four years all patients were still alive and SCID-interviews performed by a psychiatrist revealed low recurrence of self-destructive behaviour and high QoL in the younger patients. Study III included 136 patients with acetabular fractures where 52 had elementary and 84 associated fracture patterns. Fracture reduction was 0-1 mm in 106 patients and 2 mm or more in 30. QoL was significantly higher in patients with anatomically reduced fractures. Physical SF-36 domains improved with time, albeit QoL was lower than norm. Study IV had the aim to construct a condition-specific outcome instrument for patients with acetabular fractures. Closed and open questions were sent to 127 consecutive acetabular fracture patients at 6, 12 and 24 months following surgery. Responses were validated through factor analysis, scree tests, item reduction and principal component analysis which resulted in a multi-item verbal descriptive scale (VDS) with six condition-specific questions related to “Pain”, “Walking”, “Hip motion”, “Leg numbness”, “Sexual life”, “Operation scar” and a global question concerning impact on daily life activities for acetabular fracture assessment.

  • Shake-up transitions in S 2p, S 2s and F 1s photoionization of the SF6 molecule
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 42:5, s. 055102-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shake-up transitions occurring upon core photoionization in the SF6 molecule have been studied experimentally and theoretically. The S 2p, S 2s and F 1s shake-up satellite photoelectron spectra were measured using A1 Ka radiation at 1487 eV photon energy. They have been interpreted with the aid of ab initio configuration interaction calculations in the sudden-limit approximation. For the S 2p spectrum, conjugate shake-up transitions were also calculated. Clear evidence of conjugate processes is observed in the S 2p shake-up spectrum measured at 230 eV photon energy. The experimental and theoretical S 2p and S 2s shake-up spectra show very similar structures mainly due to orbital relaxation involving S 3s and 3p participation. For the calculation of the F 1s shake-up spectrum, the symmetry lowering of the molecule in the final states was considered, resulting in a good agreement with the experiment.

  • Prospective Control and Object Representation in Yound Infants : An action-based account
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the present thesis was to study the age-related differences of prospective control and object representation in young infants. The overall set of theoretical and empirical issues addressed in this thesis consists of how infants represent and react to visible and non-visible moving objects. This involves understanding the interrelationship between different actions, such as head and trunk movements, and reaching. Questions about infants’ ability to negotiate different kinds of motions and the notion that infant representation of an occluded object can be graded in strength are also addressed in the present thesis. The hypothesis of graded representation proposed that a concept of object representation is not a clear-cut distinction between whether one has a representation or not. It is rather a graded process, evolving with experience and becoming embedded in processes underlying overt behaviour. Study I showed that perturbing an object affected the quality of grasp, which seems to indicate that the approach and grasp components are, at least partially, integrated by nine months of age. The analysis of the relationship between head and hand movements showed tightness in the coupling between these movements, as indicated by a small correction time difference between them. Study III showed that 6-month-old infants, under certain conditions, can form a dynamical representation of a moving and temporarily occluded object, taking into account the velocity and the direction of the object’s motion. It also revealed three other interesting findings: firstly, that an occluder could provide landmark information about object reappearance; secondly, that reaching was dramatically disrupted when the object was temporarily non-visible either due to occlusion or blackout of the room lights and thirdly, that reaching recovered markedly after a few trials, but only when subject to blackout. Overall, the results supported the hypothesis of graded representations. In Study IV, when infants observed a circular object motion, it was shown that while head tracking is functional in 6-month-old infants, it continues to develop and become more refined up to, and beyond, the age of 12 months. The structural organization of head tracking in both 6 and 12-month-old infants complied with an organizational pattern of accelerations and decelerations, or so-called movement units, which is in line with earlier studies of both goal-directed and spontaneous arm movements. The intersegmental coupling between the head and the trunk showed that the infants tried to stabilise head movements by adjustments of the trunk. In addition, study II presents a method for coding prehensile movements by means of a touch screen system, which is used in study III.

  • Motivation, Knowledge Sharing, and Need Satisfaction in Groups
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research confirms that there are many forms of motivation associated with various organizational outcomes, and that there are various ways in which motivation can be supported. Self-determination theory shows that autonomous motivation is related to many important organizational outcomes and that the support of basic psychological needs helps to develop the motivations even further. However, additional understanding on whether different types of motivation may be related to important organizational outcomes more than others is needed. In addition, more understanding of the processes of basic psychological need satisfaction and work motivation needs to be gained. Therefore, we have examined relations between different types of motivation and outcomes and ways in which group members may increase their need satisfaction, and autonomous motivation. Hence, this symposium aims at enhancing our understanding of motivation and need satisfaction of individuals and groups in organizations. In this symposium, three empirical papers will be presented, using different methods and samples in different contexts, to explore (1) knowledge sharing motivation and (2) how group members can enhance satisfaction of their basic needs and autonomous motivation. Following the presentations, Anja Van den Broeck, a major contributor in work motivation, will serve as the discussant; to provide both theoretical and practical suggestions and lead an interactive group discussion.

  • From gristle to chondrocyte transplantation: treatment of cartilage injuries
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B-Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8436 .- 1471-2970. ; 370:1680
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review addresses the progress in cartilage repair technology over the decades with an emphasis on cartilage regeneration with cell therapy. The most abundant cartilage is the hyaline cartilage that covers the surface of our joints and, due to avascularity, this tissue is unable to repair itself. The cartilage degeneration seen in osteoarthritis causes patient suffering and is a huge burden to society. The surgical approach to cartilage repair was non-existing until the 1950s when new surgical techniques emerged. The use of cultured cells for cell therapy started as experimental studies in the 1970s that developed over the years to a clinical application in 1994 with the introduction of the autologous chondrocyte transplantation technique (ACT). The technology is now spread worldwide and has been further refined by combining arthroscopic techniques with cells cultured on matrix (MACI technology). The non-regenerating hypothesis of cartilage has been revisited and we are now able to demonstrate cell divisions and presence of stem-cell niches in the joint. Furthermore, cartilage derived from human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells could be the base for new broader cell treatments for cartilage injuries and the future technology base for prevention and cure of osteoarthritis.
