- The helical axis model can be used to describe translation and rotation of spine segments. The aim of this study was to investigate the cervical helical axis and its center of rotation during fast head movements (side rotation and flexion/extension) and ball catching in patients with non-specific neck pain or pain due to whiplash injury as compared with matched controls. The aim was also to investigate correlations with neck pain intensity. A finite helical axis model with a time-varying window was used. The intersection point of the axis during different movement conditions was calculated. A repeated-measures ANOVA model was used to investigate the cervical helical axis and its rotation center for consecutive levels of 15° during head movement. Irregularities in axis movement were derived using a zero-crossing approach. In addition, head, arm and upper body range of motion and velocity were observed. A general increase of axis irregularity that correlated to pain intensity was observed in the whiplash group. The rotation center was superiorly displaced in the non-specific neck pain group during side rotation, with the same tendency for the whiplash group. During ball catching, an anterior displacement (and a tendency to an inferior displacement) of the center of rotation and slower and more restricted upper body movements implied a changed movement strategy in neck pain patients, possibly as an attempt to stabilize the cervical spine during head movement.

- Integrated models are inherently complex and often obscure to any but those who write them. Their usefulness can be greatly enhanced through well-structured, object-oriented design. A robust and computationally efficient Simulink/C++ library of optics, control, finite-element, and visualization routines for modeling radio telescope performance under various operating conditions is being developed and is described. The library is being developed in conjunction with an end-to-end model of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) antennas. The model includes the mechanical structure, optics, servos, and potential laser gyros, and can be used to investigate such issues as tracking performance, compliance with error budgets, wind sensitivity, and effectiveness of an internal metrology system. It will also be a good tool for comparison of different antenna designs.

- The Notch signaling pathway is important for cellular differentiation. The current view is that the Notch receptor is cleaved intracellularly upon ligand activation. The intracellular Notch domain then translocates to the nucleus, binds to Suppressor of Hairless (RBP-Jk in mammals), and acts as a transactivator of Enhancer of Split (HES in mammals) gene expression. In this report we show that the Notch 3 intracellular domain (IC), in contrast to all other analysed Notch ICs, is a poor activator, and in fact acts as a repressor by blocking the ability of the Notch 1 IC to activate expression through the HES-1 and HES-5 promoters. We present a model in which Notch 3 IC interferes with Notch 1 IC-mediated activation at two levels. First, Notch 3 IC competes with Notch 1 IC for access to RBP-Jk and does not activate transcription when positioned close to a promoter. Second, Notch 3 IC appears to compete with Notch 1 IC for a common coactivator present in limiting amounts. In conclusion, this is the first example of a Notch IC that functions as a repressor in Enhancer of Split/HES upregulation, and shows that mammalian Notch receptors have acquired distinct functions during evolution.

Group Differences in Test-Taking Behaviour : An example from a High-Stakes Testing Program

- This study investigated whether different groups of test-takers vary in their reported test-taking behaviour in a high-stakes test situation. A between-group design (N = 1129) was used to examine whether high and low achievers, as well as females and males, differ in their use of test-taking strategies, and in level of reported test anxiety and motivation. The results showed differences between high and low achievers on a number of test-taking strategies, where high achievers reported using successful strategies to a higher extent. There were also gender differences: females, for example, reported using random guessing to a higher extent than males. Further, low achievers, especially females, reported significantly higher levels of test anxiety than high achievers, and high achievers reported slightly higher levels of motivation when compared to low achievers. To conclude, test-taking behaviour might bring additional variance to test scores, whether or not this is irrelevant variance is discussed.

- The thesis at hand consists of three papers as well as an introductory chapter and a summary of results. The topic of the thesis is the study of the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with step-like oscillatory data.Paper A studies the Cauchy problem for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the line with step-like oscillatory boundary conditions. More precisely, the solution is required to approach a single exponential as x → -∞ and to decay to zero as x → +∞. We prove existence of a global solution and show that the solution can be expressed in terms of the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We also compute the long-time asymptotics of the solution and apply the results to a related initial-boundary value problem on the half-line.Paper B studies an initial-boundary value problem for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line with asymptotically oscillatory boundary conditions. More precisely, the solution is required to approach a single exponential on the boundary as t → +∞ and to decay to zero as x → +∞. We construct a solution of the problem in a sector close to the boundary and compute its long-time behaviour.Paper C studies a similar problem as Paper B but instead of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation we study the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation. We give necessary conditions for the existence of a solution of the associated initial-boundary value problem under asymptotically oscillatory boundary conditions.

Atypical attack of acute intermittent porphyria : paresis but not abdominal pain

- We report a case of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) in a 45-year-old woman. Her first attack occurred at the age of 38. Because of escalating cyclical premenstrual attacks, the following 2 years, depletion of the endogenous sex hormone was considered as haeme arginate treatment proved insufficient. Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist treatment with low-dose oestradiol add back was quite successful initially but was abandoned after 18 months when progesterone add back precipitated a severe attack. Following hysterectomy and oophorectomy at age 42 and oestradiol add back, a remarkable monthly regularity of attacks ensured periodically but with milder symptoms. Two years after surgery, preceded by six attack-free months, a puzzling symptom-shift occurred, from abdominal pain, back and thigh pain during the attacks, to solely severe distal extensor paresis in the arms. Haeme arginate treatment interrupted the progress of the paresis almost immediately and motor function improved considerably up to the 9-month follow-up. Electrophysiological examination revealed only motor neuropathy, consistent with axonal degeneration. Subsequently the symptoms changed yet again, to sensory disturbances with numbness and dysesthesia as the primary expression followed by rather mild abdominal pain. However, cyclical attacks occurred, despite absence of endogenous ovarial hormone production, possibly attributable to impaired oestrogen metabolism in the liver, or adrenal oestrogen production. Treatment comprising oophorectomy, low-dose oestradiol add back and haeme arginate infusion for 2 days on the appearance of early AIP symptoms is now quite successful affording improvement in life quality.
