  • The Costs of Living with Floods in the Jamuna Floodplain in Bangladesh
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Water. - : MDPI. - 2073-4441. ; 11:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bangladeshi people use multiple strategies to live with flooding events and associated riverbank erosion. They relocate, evacuate their homes temporarily, change cropping patterns, and supplement their income from migrating household members. In this way, they can reduce the negative impact of floods on their livelihoods. However, these societal responses also have negative outcomes, such as impoverishment. This research collects quantitative household data and analyzes changes of livelihood conditions over recent decades in a large floodplain area in north-west Bangladesh. It is found that while residents cope with flooding events, they do not achieve successful adaptation. With every flooding, people lose income and assets, which they can only partially recover. As such, they are getting poorer, and therefore less able to make structural adjustments that would allow adaptation in the longer term.

  • Nonlinearity-Tolerant Four-Dimensional 2A8PSK Family for 5-7 Bits/Symbol Spectral Efficiency
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 35:8, s. 1383-1391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe in detail the recently proposed four-dimensional modulation format family based on 2-ary amplitude 8-ary phase-shift keying (2A8PSK), supporting spectral efficiencies of 5, 6, and 7 bits/symbol. These formats nicely fill the spectral efficiency gap between the dual-polarization (DP) quadrature PSK (QPSK) and DP 16-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (16QAM), with excellent linear and nonlinear performance. Since these modulation formats just use different parity bit expressions in the same constellation, similar digital signal processing can be seamlessly used for different spectral efficiency. A series of nonlinear transmission simulation results shows that this modulation format family outperforms the conventional modulation formats at the corresponding spectral efficiency. We also investigate the adaptive equalizer for these modulation formats.

  • Comparisons of weight change, eating habits and physical activity between women in Northern Sweden and Rural New York State-results from a longitudinal study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nutrition Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1475-2891. ; 14:88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Previous research has focused exclusively on weight loss or weight maintenance following weight loss, i.e. secondary weight maintenance (SWM). The long-term results of SWM have been modest, suggesting that preventing initial weight gain among normal weight or overweight individuals, i.e. primary weight maintenance (PWM), may be more successful. The aim of this study was to compare the pattern of weight change between Swedish and US women and to contrast eating and physical activity between the two countries. Methods: A questionnaire of attitudes, strategies and behaviours regarding physical activity, food habits, body image and demands to maintain weight was mailed to 4021 Swedish and 3199 US individuals. Subjects had weight measurements taken 10 years apart in the Vasterbotten Intervention Programme in northern Sweden, and self-reported weight as part of the Upstate Health and Wellness Study in Upstate New York. The mean 10-year percent weight change, and weight change in kilograms, were calculated between the two countries for nine female age (30, 40, 50 years at baseline) by BMI (20-25, 25-30, 30-35) groups. For the Swedish/US pair showing the largest differences in these two endpoints, analysis of variance, correlations and chi-square tests identified likely contributors to the observed differences in weight change. Results: For all subgroups combined, the mean percent weight changes for Swedish women and US women were 4.9 % (SD = 5.8) and 9.1 % (SD = 13.7) respectively (p<0.001). Differences in 10 year weight change between the two countries were largest among normal weight 30 year olds. Eight variables were identified as likely contributors to this difference. A significantly higher proportion of Swedish women selected the healthy alternatives for these eight variables. Percent weight change varied considerably over healthy versus unhealthy response levels in the US, but not in Sweden. Conclusions: The prevalence of obesity among the Swedish women did not progress as rapidly as among the US. The greatest weight gain occurred predominantly among the 30 year old groups. The Swedish women tended to select healthier alternatives than their US counterparts, and women in the US appeared to be more vulnerable to the effects of unhealthy habits than women in Sweden.

  • Are political connections beneficial or harmful toward firms’ performance? A meta-analysis approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Corporate Governance. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1472-0701 .- 1758-6054. ; 22:5, s. 901-921
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  PurposeThis study aims to reconcile conflicting empirical results from prior studies on the association between political connections (PCs) and firms’ performance. Furthermore, it investigates whether the contradictory findings were moderated by the different types of both PCs and firms’ performance measures. This study also makes a cross-country comparison of the empirical evidence to provide more insight.Design/methodology/approachThis study used meta-analysis to integrate the previous studies’ findings on the association between PCs and firms’ performance and further investigated the moderators of such association.FindingsThe findings show that PCs have a positive association with firms’ performance. This result is apparent for both democratic and authoritarian countries, which suggests PCs’ beneficial consequences toward firms’ performance should not be disregarded in both contexts. This study also finds PCs and firms’ performance measures moderate the association between PCs and firms’ performance.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the stream of research that investigates the association between PCs and firms’ performance. To the best of our knowledge, it is among the first to implement statistical meta-analysis on the aforementioned literature while incorporating a cross-country comparison.

  • Thermo-acoustic flame instability criteria based on upstream reflection coefficients
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Combustion and Flame. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-2180 .- 1556-2921. ; 225, s. 435-443
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prospective method to assess thermo-acoustic instabilities based on two reflection coefficients measured from the upstream side of the burner is presented and experimentally validated. In order to compose a model which allows predicting the onset of thermo-acoustic instability of combustion in a practical appliance, one has to characterize the thermo-acoustic properties of the burner including the flame as an acoustically active element and acoustic properties of all other (usually passive) components of the combustion appliance both upstream as well as downstream of the burner. This kind of modeling strategy usually faces serious practical problems related to the need of measurements/modeling at the hot downstream part of the system. In the present work, we propose a measurement and a system modeling approach which relies on two acoustic measurements, namely reflection coefficients, only at the cold (burner upstream) part of the combustion appliance. Both reflection coefficients, termed upstream and input, can be readily measured using standard acoustic techniques. The need to measure the input reflection coefficient of an acoustically active subsystem may impose difficulties related to the acoustic instability of the measurement setup itself. The approach and technical solution to handle this problem via a special modification of the excitation source (loudspeaker box) is proposed. The dispersion relation to search for system eigen frequencies is represented in a form that couples the reflection coefficients of the upstream part of the appliance and input reflection coefficient from the downstream part as observed through the burner with flame. This form of the dispersion relation is commonly used in the theory of radio-frequency circuits and recently introduced for thermo-acoustic problems. The proposed method is applied to burners with premixed burner-stabilized Bunsen-type flames. The observed instability conditions and oscillation frequencies are compared with predictions of the proposed modeling approach and reveal good correspondence.

  • Anthropocentrism : More than just a misunderstood problem
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics. - : Springer. - 1187-7863 .- 1573-322X. ; 31:1, s. 109-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anthropocentrism, in its original connotation in environmental ethics, is the belief that value is human-centred and that all other beings are means to human ends. Environmentally -concerned authors have argued that anthropocentrism is ethically wrong and at the root of ecological crises. Some environmental ethicists argue, however, that critics of anthropocentrism are misguided or even misanthropic. They contend: first that criticism of anthropocentrism can be counterproductive and misleading by failing to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate human interests. Second, that humans differ greatly in their environmental impacts, and consequently, addressing human inequalities should be a precondition for environmental protection. Third, since ecosystems constitute the "life-support system" for humans, anthropocentrism can and should be a powerful motivation for environmental protection. Fourth, human self-love is not only natural but helpful as a starting point for loving others, including nonhumans. Herein we analyze such arguments, agreeing with parts of them while advancing four counter-arguments. First, redefining the term anthropocentrism seems to be an attempt to ignore behavior in which humans focus on themselves at the risk of the planet. Second, if addressing human inequalities is a precondition for environmental protection, biodiversity protection will remain out of the scope of ethical consideration for an indefinite period of time. Third, anthropocentric motivations can only make a positive contribution to the environment in situations where humans are conscious of a direct benefit to themselves. Fourth, 'self-love' alone is an inadequate basis for environmental concern and action. We also explore the question of agency, shared responsibility, and a fair attribution of blame for our environmental predicaments.
