  • Update: proposed reference sequences for subtypes of hepatitis E virus (species Orthohepevirus A)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of General Virology. - : Microbiology Society. - 0022-1317 .- 1465-2099. ; 101:7, s. 692-698
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this recommendation, we update our 2016 table of reference sequences of subtypes of hepatitis E virus (HEV; species Orthohepevirus A, family Hepeviridae) for which complete genome sequences are available (Smith et al., 2016). This takes into account subsequent publications describing novel viruses and additional proposals for subtype names; there are now eight genotypes and 36 subtypes. Although it remains difficult to define strict criteria for distinguishing between virus subtypes, and is not within the remit of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), the use of agreed reference sequences will bring clarity and stability to researchers, epidemiologists and clinicians working with HEV.

  • The Economic Value of Water in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) River Basin
  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study estimates the scarcity value of irrigation water to farmers of Bangladesh and compares it with that of India especially in the Ganges dependent districts of both these countries. We use a physical production function approach for our analysis. The value of water ranges from USD 0.002 to 0.015 per m3 for irrigated boro rice in Bangladesh. The Southwest region, the Ganges dependent area has the highest value of water. The study has important implications for an optimal allocation of water between different groups of farmers.

  • Adding Natural Areas to Social Indicators of Intra-Urban Health Inequalities among Children: A Case Study from Berlin, Germany
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI AG. - 1660-4601. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research suggests that there is a relationship between the health of urban populations and the availability of green and water spaces in their daily environment. In this paper, we analyze the potential intra-urban relationships between children's health determinants and outcomes and natural areas in Berlin, Germany. In particular, health indicators such as deficits in viso-motoric development in children are related to environmental indicators such as the natural area cover, natural area per capita and distance to natural areas; however, these indicators are also correlated with social determinants of health. The methodological approach used in this study included bivariate and multivariate analyses to explore the relations between health inequalities and social, socio-economic, and land use parameters. The results on a sub-district level indicated that there was a correlation between natural areas and social health determinants, both of which displayed a certain intra-urban spatial pattern. In particular, a lower percentage of natural area cover was correlated with deficits in viso-motoric development. However, results with percentage of natural area cover and per capita natural area with childhood overweight were not conclusive. No significant correlation was found for percentage of natural area cover and overweight, while significant negative correlation values were found between overweight and per capita natural area. This was identified particularly in the districts that had lower social conditions. On the other hand, the districts with the highest social conditions had the comparatively lowest levels of complete measles immunization. This study may facilitate public health work by identifying the urban areas in which the strengthening of health resources and actions should be prioritized and also calls for the inclusion of natural areas among the social health indicators included in intra-urban health inequality tools.

  • Pax Germanica : A nova Paz Liberal e a velha Angst Europeia
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Relacoes Internacionais. - Lisbon : Portuguese Institute of International Affairs. - 1645-9199. ; :32, s. 129-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article seeks to contribute to a reflection on the current european crisis through a critical theorization of liberalism, here characterized as a phi‐ losophical, political and ontological assumption of a liberal peace that rests increasingly on the geopolitical scenario  of germanisation of europe. Therefore, two main essays are revisited in the paper, one by carl schmitt and the other by emanuel levinas, their criticisms of the model of liberal peace describes many of the limitations of the industrial and technocratic model that underpins it, but above all the way in which this model paves the way for its own collapse.

  • Plea Bargaining Changing Nordic Criminal Procedure : Sweden and Finland as Examples
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Rethinking Nordic Courts. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030748500 - 9783030748517 ; , s. 255-269
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A plea bargaining system is a novelty and originally a legal transplant in Northern European countries. It exists—in some form—for instance in Finland, Norway and Denmark, whereas in Sweden only the system of crown witnesses is likely to be introduced. In this chapter plea bargaining is put into the East-Nordic—Finnish and Swedish—contexts. How does plea bargaining fit into the East-Nordic court culture? Which ingredients does the contemporary legal culture consist of? In which way is court culture changing due to the new values in the society? Or are the amendments made primarily to reduce the costs of the state? Fairness, procedural justice, conflict resolution, negotiated law, pragmatically acceptable compromise, procedural truth, court service, communication and interaction are examples of the topics that are currently discussed in Finland and Sweden. At the same time, the use of written proceedings and proceedings in the absence of an accused are increasing. Is the plea bargaining system a step towards a more effective and economic criminal procedural system or is it mirroring new type of thinking concerning criminal proceedings? In this chapter, these elements are discussed. Finland is used as a main example. The Finnish situation is also compared with Sweden.
