  • Threat modeling – A systematic literature review
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Computers & security (Print). - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-4048 .- 1872-6208. ; 84, s. 53-69
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cyber security is attracting worldwide attention. With attacks being more and more common and often successful, no one is spared today. Threat modeling is proposed as a solution for secure application development and system security evaluations. Its aim is to be more proactive and make it more difficult for attackers to accomplish their malicious intents. However, threat modeling is a domain that lacks common ground. What is threat modeling, and what is the state-of-the-art work in this field? To answer these questions, this article presents a review of threat modeling based on systematic queries in four leading scientific databases. This is the first systematic literature review on threat modeling to the best of our knowledge. 176 articles were assessed, and 54 of them were selected for further analysis. We identified three separate clusters: (1) articles making a contribution to threat modeling, e.g., introducing a new method, (2) articles using an existing threat modeling approach, and (3) introductory articles presenting work related to the threat modeling process. The three clusters were analyzed in terms of a set of criteria, for instance: Is the threat modeling approach graphical or formal? Is it focused on a specific attack type and application? Is the contribution validated empirically or theoretically? We observe from the results that, most threat modeling work remains to be done manually, and there is limited assurance of their validations. The results can be used for researchers and practitioners who want to know the state-of-the-art threat modeling methods, and future research directions are discussed.

  • A food-borne streptococcal sore throat outbreak in a small community.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of infectious diseases. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 38:11-12, s. 988-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Beta-haemolytic group A streptococci (GAS) is a common cause of sore throat, usually spread person-to-person. Outbreaks related to infected food have more seldom been reported. The bacteria may originate from the throat or from wounds on the hands of persons handling the food. An outbreak in Sätila, Sweden, in April/May 2003 involving 153 individuals who fell ill after eating contaminated 'sandwich-layer cakes' was investigated in a descriptive, retrospective cohort study. Questionnaires were distributed, one immediately after the outbreak and one 3 months later. The average attack rate was 72%. 143 individuals sought medical care and 137 were treated with antibiotics. 76 individuals were ill for more than 4 days. GAS isolates of identical T-type were obtained from the throats of the patients, wounds on the caterer's fingers and also from the cakes. PFGE banding patterns of 14 representative isolates were identical, as well as the emm-sequence type, emm 89, of 3 chosen isolates. The study shows that GAS from a small wound on a finger can cause illness in a large number of individuals. To prevent further outbreaks, it is important to increase public awareness of this type of transmission.

  • Academic Entrepreneurship : The Bayh-Dole Act versus the Professor's Privilege
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial & labor relations review. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC. - 0019-7939 .- 2162-271X. ; 72:5, s. 1094-1122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Is the Bayh-Dole intellectual property regime associated with more and better academic entrepreneurship than the Professor's Privilege regime? The authors examine data on US PhDs in the natural sciences, engineering, and medical fields who became entrepreneurs in 1993-2006 and compare this to similar data from Sweden. They find that, in both countries, those with an academic background have lower rates of entry into entrepreneurship than do those with a non-academic background. The relative rate of academics starting entrepreneurial firms is slightly lower in the United States than in Sweden. Moreover, the mean economic gains from becoming an entrepreneur are negative, both for PhDs originating in academia and for non-academic settings in both countries. Analysis indicates that selection into entrepreneurship occurs from the lower part of the ability distribution among academics. The results suggest that policies supporting entrepreneurial decisions by younger, tenure-track academics may be more effective than are general incentives to increase academic entrepreneurship.

  • Information Diffusion in Social Networks in Two Phases
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering. - 2327-4697. ; 3:4, s. 197-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of maximizing information diffusion, given a certain budget expressed in terms of the number of seed nodes, is an important topic in social networks research. Existing literature focuses on single phase diffusion where all seed nodes are selected at the beginning of diffusion and all the selected nodes are activated simultaneously. This paper undertakes a detailed investigation of the effect of selecting and activating seed nodes in multiple phases. Specifically, we study diffusion in two phases assuming the well-studied independent cascade model. First, we formulate an objective function for two-phase diffusion, investigate its properties, and propose efficient algorithms for finding seed nodes in the two phases. Next, we study two associated problems: (1) budget splitting which seeks to optimally split the total budget between the two phases and (2) scheduling which seeks to determine an optimal delay after which to commence the second phase. Our main conclusions include: (a) under strict temporal constraints, use single phase diffusion, (b) under moderate temporal constraints, use two-phase diffusion with a short delay while allocating most of the budget to the first phase, and (c) when there are no temporal constraints, use two-phase diffusion with a long delay while allocating roughly one-third of the budget to the first phase.

  • Solubility of Hydrogen and Nitrogen in liquid cast iron during melting and mold filling
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 72nd World Foundry Congress, WFC 2016. - : The World Foundry Organization (WFO). - 9781510833128 ; , s. 52-53
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Defect formation like gas- and shrinkage porosity at cast iron component production is related to the content of gaseous elements in the liquid metal. The present work investigate the solubility of hydrogen and nitrogen in liquid iron aimed for production of lamellar and compacted graphite cast iron. The used methods and instruments are a combination of commercial measuring devices and novel experimental assemblies for measuring solubility of hydrogen and nitrogen during melting and mold filling of a complex shaped cast component. The obtained results reveal the role of the charge material and the mold filling on the solubility of the investigated elements.

  • Surface Turbulence at Flow of Gray Cast Iron
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Key Engineering Materials. - Switzerland : Trans Tech Publications. - 1013-9826 .- 1662-9795. ; 457, s. 422-427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gray cast iron has been investigated with respect to surface turbulence during mould filling. Different levels of flow velocities have been provoked in a vertically parted sand mould. The thermal resistant transparent front side of the mould permitted the observation of the flow pattern due to high speed camera registration. The registered frames including the liquid surface were investigated using image analyses. The results show good correlation between the average flow velocity and the liquid iron surface extension. Consequently it has been demonstrated that an increased absorption of hydrogen and nitrogen during mould filling is dependent on the level of liquid surface turbulence.

  • Reasonable Knock-Down Factors for Sandwich Face Wrinkling
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Design rules and formulas used to predict wrinkling failure of sandwich structures ofteninclude a knockdown factor to compensate for "imperfections" in the sandwich structure. The knockdown is usually based on experience and empirically derived from compression testing. It can be substantially large and clearly affect the design. For example the most widely used Hoff's formula suggests a reduction of 45%, from 0.91 to 0.5, due to the effect of imperfections. The wrinkling formulae are also often simplified, thus neglecting the effect of the stacking sequence of the face sheet laminate. These types of rough “rule of thumb” design constraints must be re-evaluated and questioned.Today’s modern design methods and highly optimised structures seek a weigh treduction of the few last percent. This demands a higher level of accuracy in the designprocess and yesterday’s methods must be improved to meet the demand. In this paper an alternative method to derive a reasonable knockdown factor is presented and it is shown that this factor can also be predicted based on constituent material properties and assumed amplitude of initial imperfections. The design method previously published by the authors in [1] is extended to fully anisotropic materials anda first ply failure criterion. The results have thus far been confirmed by tests and good agreement has been achieved.
