  • The Use of Diffusion Weighted Imaging and Intravoxel Incoherent Motion to Assess Edema and Perfusion in Abdominal Organs during Endotoxemia
  • 2023
  • In: MAGNETOCHEMISTRY. - : MDPI. - 2312-7481. ; 9:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) technique probing the microscopic movement of water molecules in tissue, allows for the quantification of water diffusivity and the contribution of perfusion to the total amount of water. In the last decades, its use in organs other than the brain has increased and it has successfully been applied to abdominal organs; otherwise the use of DWI for the assessment of perfusion (by measuring perfusion fraction and edema (by measuring the apparent diffusion coefficient-ADC) of entire organs is not a clinical standard. The aim of this paper is to assess whether DWI, specifically IVIM, can accurately assess edema (the amount of water contained in a tissue) and perfusion in abdominal organs (liver, spleen, intestine and kidneys) in an endotoxemic porcine model. Endotoxemia was induced in 20 piglets and they were divided into three groups: HM group (HighMAP, mean arterial pressure was maintained >65 mmHg by noradrenaline infusion), LM group (LowMAP, MAP was maintained between 50 and 60 mmHg) and LTD (the thoracic duct was ligated to increase abdominal edema). In addition, a fourth group of healthy controls (four animals) underwent MRI. Edema was also assessed by wet-dry weight in liver, spleen and intestine; and perfusion was assessed by hemodynamics, lactate concentration and SvO(2). ADC was found to be higher in the intestine of the LTD group compared with the other groups, in accordance with wet-dry weight. In addition, ADC in kidneys was found to be correlated to glomerular filtration rate. f was correlated with hemodynamics in kidneys and liver. The presented data show that there is a potential for clinical use of the technique in septic patients.

  • Representatives' Attitudes Toward Citizen Protests in Sweden: The Impact of Ideology, Parliamentary Position and Experiences
  • 2012
  • In: Legislative Studies Quarterly. - : Wiley. - 0362-9805. ; 37:2, s. 251-268
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • What affects political representatives' attitudes toward citizen protests? We test the impact of political representatives' left-right ideology, parliamentary position, and earlier experience of citizen protests. Using data from a pioneering survey covering all local political representatives in Sweden (n = 9,101, response rate 70%), we examine attitudes toward controversial noninstitutionalized forms of citizen protests. The results show that representatives to the right show considerably lower protest acceptance than those to the left. Representatives in office show significantly lower levels of acceptance than those of the opposition. Finally, the results show that representatives with more protest experience show higher protest acceptance.

  • A prospective investigation over two decades on signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and associated variables. A final summary.
  • 2005
  • In: Acta odontologica Scandinavica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0001-6357 .- 1502-3850. ; 63:2, s. 99-109
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this summary of a longitudinal investigation on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) was to present the prevalence figures of signs and symptoms of TMD and certain other examined variables, and the correlations between these variables, over a 20-year period. Originally, 402 randomly selected 7-, 11-, and 15-year-olds were examined clinically and by means of a questionnaire. The same examination procedure was repeated three times: after 4-5 years and after 10 and 20 years, respectively. Signs and symptoms of TMD were mainly mild, but common already in childhood. They increased up to young adulthood, after which they leveled out. Progression to severe pain and dysfunction was rare, and spontaneous recovery from more pronounced symptoms was also rare. Significant correlations between reported bruxism and TMD symptoms were found, and a baseline report of tooth-grinding was a predictor of TMD treatment during the 20 years covered by the investigation. Occlusal factors were only weakly associated with TMD signs and symptoms. However, a lateral forced bite between the retruded contact position (RCP) and the intercuspal contact position (ICP) and a unilateral crossbite deserve further consideration as possible local risk factors for development of TMD. In conclusion, a substantial fluctuation of TMD signs and symptoms was observed in this sample of Swedish subjects followed for 20 years from childhood to adult. The demand for TMD treatment was low at all examinations, while the estimated treatment need was larger. One-third of subjects who had some kind of orthodontic treatment did not run a higher risk of developing TMD later in life.

  • The Sarawani dialect of Balochi and Persian influence on it
  • 2003
  • In: The Baloch and their neighbours: Ethnic and linguistic contact in Balochistan in historical and modern times. ; , s. 75-111
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The paper describes the Central Sarawani dialect, spoken in Iranian Balochistan. This dialect differs quite markedly from other Balochi dialects spoken in Iran and is more deeply influenced by Persian, e.g. by empolying the ezafe-construction instead of genitive case marking. The phonology, morphology and syntax of the dialect is described and exemplified from data representing 17 informants from Sarawan aged between 13 and 75. Differences in dialect between well educated persons and illiterate persons are also notices. A sample text with translation into English is appended.

  • The evolution of charge-induced gap states in degenerate and non-degenerate conjugated molecules and polymers as studied by photoelectron spectroscopy
  • 1994
  • In: Synthetic metals. - : Elsevier. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 67:1, s. 81-86
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report the results of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) studies of the interaction between sodium and conjugated systems for a series of diphenylpolyees and diffrent oligomers of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV). The diphenylpolyenes include molecules containing two (i.e., stilbene) to 14 carbon atoms in the polyene part; stilbene itself can also be considered as a phenyl-capped monomer of PPV. Furthermore, a PPV oligomer with three phenylene units, as well as PPV itself, has been studied. The experimental results are interpreted with the help of quantum-chemical calculations using the Hartree-Fock semi-empirical Austin Model 1 (AM1) and valence-effective Hamiltonian (VEH) methods. An important result is that all the systems react strongly with sodium; at high doping levels two new doping-induced states are detected above the valence band edge of the pristine material. In the case of saturation-doped diphenylpolyenes (i.e., two sodiums per molecule), the new states can be discussed in terms of soliton-antisoliton pairs confined within the polyene part of the molecules; in contrast, the self-localized states induced in PPV and its oligomers have to be referred to as bipolarons.
