  • Crisis as a Continuum: Learning from an Inclusive Feminist Crisis Response. RESISTIRÉ Factsheet
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As a way of harvesting our collective insights from the RESISTIRÉ research, we 1) propose the concept of ‘crisis as a continuum’ as an essential framework for crisis prevention, response, recovery, and monitoring, and 2) suggest that public authorities at all levels, including the European Union, support and learn from an inclusive feminist crisis response to prevent and better manage future crises. These recommendations are based on the three cycles of RESISTIRÉ research and supported by project factsheets that aim to provide a conceptual framework for approaching future crises.

  • VP reconfiguration through Simulated Allocation
  • 1996
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • VP reconfiguration is a powerful and flexible tool to cope with traffic changes and/or equipment failures in ATM networks. In the paper we present an application of a stochastic optimization algorithm called Simulated Allocation to the problem of VP reconfiguration in response to traffic shifts. The considered optimization task takes into account the cost of VPs reconfiguration imposed by changes in VP routing tables, rearrangement and possible loss of some calls in progress. Numerical results illustrating the effectiveness of the Simulated Allocation algorithm are given.

  • Mania symptoms in a Swedish longitudinal population study: The roles of childhood trauma and neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of affective disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 1573-2517 .- 0165-0327. ; 280:Part A, s. 450-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adult psychiatric disorders are associated with both childhood traumatic experiences (CTEs) and neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). CTEs and NDDs frequently co-occur in childhood, but their combined risk effect on the emergence of juvenile mania symptoms has not yet been examined. In a population-representative Swedish twin study, CTEs and NDDs were assessed in 3,348 nine-year old twins born between 1998 and 2001, and treated as dichotomous predictors (any CTEs, any NDDs). Follow-up data were gathered at age 15 through parental reports of mania symptoms, yielding a symptom count score. Both CTEs and NDDs at age 9 contributed uniquely to an increase in mania symptoms at age 15. Children with both risk factors had 1.6 times the rate of mania symptoms as children with CTEs-only (Incidence rate ratio [IRR] 1.63, 95% CI 1.37-1.93), and 1.3 times the rate of mania symptoms as children with NDDs-only (IRR 1.26, 95% CI 1.06-1.50). There was no evidence for an interactive effect of CTEs and NDDs. NDDs showed a trend towards having a larger effect on mania symptoms than CTEs (NDDs-only vs. CTEs-only: IRR 1.29, 95% CI 0.99-1.68).Although it is a strength of the study that the data on exposures and outcome were collected prospectively, parental recall of CTEs was required and CTEs may be under-reported.NDDs are at least as important as CTEs in the development of mania symptoms, and their risk is additive. Those with a history of both CTEs and NDDs should be monitored closely for the development of more severe psychiatric presentations.

  • Architecture of the human mitochondrial iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 0021-9258. ; 291:40, s. 21296-21321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fe-S clusters, essential cofactors needed for the activity of many different enzymes, are assembled by conserved protein machineries inside bacteria and mitochondria. As the architecture of the human machinery remains undefined, we co-expressed in Escherichia coli the following four proteins involved in the initial step of Fe-S cluster synthesis: FXN42-210 (iron donor); [NFS1]·[ISD11] (sulfur donor); and ISCU (scaffold upon which new clusters are assembled). We purified a stable, active complex consisting of all four proteins with 1:1:1:1 stoichiometry. Using negative staining transmission EM and single particle analysis, we obtained a three-dimensional model of the complex with ∼14 Å resolution. Molecular dynamics flexible fitting of protein structures docked into the EM map of the model revealed a [FXN42-210]24·[NFS1]24·[ISD11]24·[ISCU]24 complex, consistent with the measured 1:1:1:1 stoichiometry of its four components. The complex structure fulfills distance constraints obtained from chemical cross-linking of the complex at multiple recurring interfaces, involving hydrogen bonds, salt bridges, or hydrophobic interactions between conserved residues. The complex consists of a central roughly cubic [FXN42-210]24·[ISCU]24 sub-complex with one symmetric ISCU trimer bound on top of one symmetric FXN42-210 trimer at each of its eight vertices. Binding of 12 [NFS1]2·[ISD11]2 sub-complexes to the surface results in a globular macromolecule with a diameter of ∼15 nm and creates 24 Fe-S cluster assembly centers. The organization of each center recapitulates a previously proposed conserved mechanism for sulfur donation from NFS1 to ISCU and reveals, for the first time, a path for iron donation from FXN42-210 to ISCU.

  • EAU Guidelines on Primary Urethral Carcinoma
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier. - 0302-2838 .- 1873-7560. ; 64:5, s. 823-830
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: The European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines Group on Muscle-Invasive and Metastatic Bladder Cancer prepared these guidelines to deliver current evidence-based information on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with primary urethral carcinoma (UC).Objective: To review the current literature on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with primary UC and assess its level of scientific evidence.Evidence acquisition: A systematic literature search was performed to identify studies reporting urethral malignancies. Medline was searched using the controlled vocabulary of the Medical Subject Headings database, along with a free-text protocol.Evidence synthesis: Primary UC is considered a rare cancer, accounting for <1% of all malignancies. Risk factors for survival include age, tumour stage and grade, nodal stage, presence of distant metastasis, histologic type, tumour size, tumour location, and modality of treatment. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred method to assess the local extent of urethral tumour; computed tomography of the thorax and abdomen should be used to assess distant metastasis. In localised anterior UC, urethra-sparing surgery is an alternative to primary urethrectomy in both sexes, provided negative surgical margins can be achieved. Patients with locally advanced UC should be discussed by a multidisciplinary team of urologists, radiation oncologists, and oncologists. Patients with noninvasive UC or carcinoma in situ of the prostatic urethra and prostatic ducts can be treated with a urethra-sparing approach with transurethral resection and bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Cystoprostatectomy with extended pelvic lymphadenectomy should be reserved for patients not responding to BCG or as a primary treatment option in patients with extensive ductal or stromal involvement. Conclusions: The 2013 guidelines document on primary UC is the first publication on this topic by the EAU. It aims to increase awareness in the urologic community and provide scientific transparency to improve outcomes of this rare urogenital malignancy.

  • Towards a decarbonized green state? The politics of low-carbon governance in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Rethinking the Green State: Environmental Governance towards Climate and Sustainability Transitions. - 9781138792517 ; Routledge Studies in Sustainability, s. 156-173
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter we explore how a decarbonized green state might develop. Climate governance provides venues towards decarbonization and for greening the state by steering and enabling transformative social change. We study low-carbon transitions in Sweden in a set of policy sectors for their potential to reduce carbon emissions, spur innovation and enter policy paths towards decarbonization. Sweden has been successful in supporting transitions in the energy sector but decarbonization is not institutionalized in the transport and industry sectors. While lacking a strategic focus on long-term decarbonization climate policy is dominated by the market-liberal norm of cost-efficiency.

  • Confined polymers in the extended de Gennes regime
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the American Physical Society.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the "extended de Gennes regime" the problem of describing the conformations of a semiflexible polymer confined to a channel can be mapped onto the weakly self-avoiding random-walk model. For large contour lengths the asymptotically exact solution of this model predicts how the conformational fluctuations of the confined polymer depend upon the channel dimensions and upon the physical properties of the polymer, its effective width and persistence length. The extended de Gennes regime (where the polymer is neither weakly nor strongly confined) has recently been studied intensively experimentally and by means of computer simulations of worm-like chain models. In this talk I explain the mapping, summarise the predictions derived from the exact solution, and compare the predictions to results of computer simulations [Dorfman et al.] and experiments [Westerlund et al.] of DNA molecules confined to nanochannels. I conclude by summarising open questions. This talk is mainly based on joint work with E. Werner [Phys. Rev. E 90 (2014) 062602].
