  • Interactive teaching methods - drama for non-actors
  • 2006
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In our courses for university teachers we have tried different forms of drama and interpretations to illustrate, and to provide understanding complex issues in our context of teaching and learning. Engaging in performance can bring forward questions, experiences and issues that sometimes are difficult to express in words. With an inspiration in Augusto Boal’s work around forum theatre (Boal, 1992), we have developed a special method of understanding and solving complex problems in human relations, and in our context of teaching and learning. Boal developed a form of theatre from traditional monologues on stage into a form based on a dialogue between audience and stage. In our model, all course participants are engaged in a role play or a form of forum theatre. The choice of activity is based on the specified learning outcomes for each course. Common themes are gender, diversity, and balance of power. Our model becomes an extraordinary tool for transforming difficult questions and issues to a training ground for action and understanding of human behaviour in our specific environment as a University. We also become actively engaged with our participants, developing relationships and trust, and having a very good time. We want to discuss and share our model, the games and exercises, with other participants in a workshop. References Boal, A. (1992). Games for Actors and Non-Actors, London: Routledge.

  • Feminist Visions in Video Art : from Wonder Woman to Miss Universe
  • 2017
  • In: IFLA WLIC 2017.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This paper discusses the influence of feminism on three video works from the 1960s and 1970s in the USA and one in Sweden during the 1990s. For women artists one of the main issues was to be able to describe their own reality and to document it. New subjects and themes were explored in art. Humour and irony were often used in the struggle for women's rights, female representation and a critique of academy and society.

  • Essays on Labor Market Disparities and Discrimination : Immigration, Education and Gender
  • 2011
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The thesis consists of four papers, summarized as follows. Do Host Country Educations Even Out the Playing Field? Immigrant-Native Labor Market Gaps in Sweden This study follows a cohort of students from Swedish compulsory school graduation in 1988 until 2002 to document differences in education, including grades and field of education, and labor market outcomes between immigrants and natives. Results indicate initial differences in youth labor market status and long term differences in employment rates, most notably for those with Non-European backgrounds. Acculturation Identity and Higher Education: Is There a Trade-off Between Ethnic Identity and Education? This paper examines the role of identification to home and host cultures on the pursuit of higher educations for individuals with immigrant backgrounds. Identity is defined according to a two-dimensional acculturation framework based on strength of identification to both ethnic background cultures and the majority culture. The results put into question the premise of oppositional identities. Is It How You Look or Speak That Matters? -An Experimental Study Exploring the Mechanisms of Ethnic Discrimination Using a laboratory experiment, we explore the following questions: Are beliefs about performance affected by if a candidate is perceived to have looks that are non-stereotypical for the dominant population? Do these beliefs change if the candidate has a native-like vs. accented speech? We find that candidates not perceived as stereotypically Swedish are considered to be worse performers. When candidates are presented by both looks and speech, we find negative beliefs for candidates that speak Swedish with a foreign-accent. Sector Differences in the Glass Ceiling in Sweden -Is Occupational Segregation the Explanation? This paper explores sector differences in how the gender wage gap varies across the wage distribution and examines the role of occupational segregation in explaining this variation for Sweden. Results indicate that the phenomenon known as the glass ceiling is stronger in the public sector than in the private sector. This difference is found to be due to occupational segregation.

  • Contrasting lipid biomarkers in mountain rivers in the Nepal Himalayas : Organic matter characteristics and contribution to the fluvial carbon pool
  • 2021
  • In: Geoscience Frontiers. - Beijing : China University of Geosciences. - 1674-9871. ; 12:6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Nepal Himalayas is the source of many glacial and spring-fed river systems crisscrossing the mountainous terrain. There is an increasing recognition of small mountain rivers (SMRs) to have a significant combined export of dissolved and particulate organic carbon to the global carbon flux. We analyzed fluvial sediments from two SMRs and compared the results with two large mountain rivers (LMRs) in Nepal. We investigated the organic matter (OM), its compositional variability, and seasonal export using a suite of lipid biomarkers, namely n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, n-alkanols, and sterols. The SMRs indicated a similarity in lipid distribution and were affected by a strong seasonal variability. The LMRs showed a distinct contrast in the distribution of lipids in suspended sediments. Bedload sediments in SMRs were derived from diverse sources with weak terrigenous dominance all-year-round compared to the suspended load. Functional lipids (n-alkanoic acids and n-alkanols) were the major constituents in SMR sediments, indicating better preservation. In contrast, n-alkane concentration dominated over other fractions in suspended sediments retrieved from LMRs. The biomarker trends differentiate SMRs from LMRs with lower transformed/degraded OM in SMRs. A common observation was the strong presence of even carbon compounds in short-chain n-alkanes in SMR bedload sediments and their predominance in suspended sediments in LMRs. Such an unusual trend is attributed to specific biomarker sources from the catchment and ongoing processes in fluvial systems. Topsoil colonized by fungal species under moist acidic conditions and autochthonous bacteria contributes to the organic matter pool in shallow SMRs. In LMRs, the contribution from thermally mature sedimentary hydrocarbons and the diagenetic reduction of nalkanoic acids to n-alkanes are additional contributors to the allochthonous carbon pool. The differences in lipid concentrations, their distribution, seasonality, and the size of rivers suggest differential preservation/degradation of the organic matter pool and their importance in contributing to the carbon budget. • Valorization of Brewers’ Spent Grain for the Production of Lipids by Oleaginous Yeast
  • 2018
  • In: Molecules. - : MDPI. - 1431-5157 .- 1420-3049. ; 23:12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Brewers’ spent grain (BSG) accounts for 85% of the total amount of by-products generated by the brewing industries. BSG is a lignocellulosic biomass that is rich in proteins, lipids, minerals, and vitamins. In the present study, BSG was subjected to pretreatment by two different methods (microwave assisted alkaline pretreatment and organosolv) and was evaluated for the liberation of glucose and xylose during enzymatic saccharification trials. The highest amount of glucose (46.45 ± 1.43 g/L) and xylose (25.15 ± 1.36 g/L) were observed after enzymatic saccharification of the organosolv pretreated BSG. The glucose and xylose yield for the microwave assisted alkaline pretreated BSG were 34.86 ± 1.27 g/L and 16.54 ± 2.1 g/L, respectively. The hydrolysates from the organosolv pretreated BSG were used as substrate for the cultivation of the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides, aiming to produce microbial lipids. The yeast synthesized as high as 18.44 ± 0.96 g/L of cell dry weight and 10.41 ± 0.34 g/L lipids (lipid content of 56.45 ± 0.76%) when cultivated on BSG hydrolysate with a C/N ratio of 500. The cell dry weight, total lipid concentration and lipid content were higher compared to the results obtained when grown on synthetic media containing glucose, xylose or mixture of glucose and xylose. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report using hydrolysates of organosolv pretreated BSG for the growth and lipid production of oleaginous yeast in literature. The lipid profile of this oleaginous yeast showed similar fatty acid contents to vegetable oils, which can result in good biodiesel properties of the produced biodiesel

  • AKT1 and neurocognition in schizophrenia
  • 2007
  • In: The Australian and New Zealand journal of psychiatry. - : SAGE Publications. - 0004-8674 .- 1440-1614. ; 41:2, s. 169-177
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Objective: Previous research has shown conflicting results for the significance of five v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homolog 1 ( AKT1) single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to the aetiology of schizophrenia. Neurocognition is a plausible endophenotype for schizophrenia and it was reasoned that the lack of agreement might be due to variability in neurocognition across studies. Therefore, the association of genetic variation in AKT1 with neurocognition was investigated in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: The same five SNPs used in previous studies of the etiology of schizophrenia (rs2494732, rs2498799, rs3730358, rs1130241, and rs3803300) were genotyped in 641 individuals with schizophrenia who had participated in the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) project. The primary dependent variable was a neurocognitive composite score and exploratory analyses investigated five domain scores (processing speed, reasoning, verbal memory, working memory, and vigilance). Results: There were no significant asymptotic or empirical associations between any SNP and the neurocognitive composite score. The authors also investigated the association of five-SNP haplotypes with the neurocognitive composite score. A marginally significant association was observed for the neurocognitive composite score with one of the five-SNP haplotypes (global score statistic 19.51, df = 9, permutation p = 0.02). Exploratory analyses of five domain scores (processing speed, reasoning, verbal memory, working memory, and vigilance) were non-significant for all five SNPs. Conclusion: Results published to date for an association between genetic variation in AKT1 with schizophrenia are inconsistent. The results suggest that the AKT1 markers studied are not associated with neurocognition in schizophrenia, and do not support unassessed variation in neurocognitive scores as a reason for this discrepancy.
