  • Linking discourse-level information and the induction of bilingual discourse connective lexicons
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Semantic Web. - 1570-0844 .- 2210-4968. ; 13:6, s. 1081-1102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The single biggest obstacle in performing comprehensive cross-lingual discourse analysis is the scarcity of multilingual resources. The existing resources are overwhelmingly monolingual, compelling researchers to infer the discourse-level information in the target languages through error-prone automatic means. The current paper aims to provide a more direct insight into the cross-lingual variations in discourse structures by linking the annotated relations of the TED-Multilingual Discourse Bank, which consists of independently annotated six TED talks in seven different languages. It is shown that the linguistic labels over the relations annotated in the texts of these languages can be automatically linked with English with high accuracy, as verified against the relations of three diverse languages semi-automatically linked with relations over English texts. The resulting corpus has a great potential to reveal the divergences in local discourse relations, as well as leading to new resources, as exemplified by the induction of bilingual discourse connective lexicons.

  • Power Consumption in Remote Gaming : an Empirical Evaluation
  • 2016

    • The thin-client approach for gaming is becoming more popular. For instance, Nvidia Shield, Valve Steam and Shinra technologies have offerings based on the concept. In remote cloud gaming, the game is being executed and processed in the cloud while the user receives a video and audio stream of the game, in a very similar way as with remote desktop clients. At the same time, clouds are moving towards the end-users as "edge clouds" with different standardization bodies, such Open Mobile Edge Cloud and Open Fog Consortium, giving momentum for the efforts. Were remote gaming approaches to utilize edge clouds, the games could be played without installing any infrastructure at the homes of end-users while keeping network delays to the latency-sensitive games low. While waiting for such edge-cloud deployments to substantiate, even regional clouds could be utilized for the purpose. In such environments, remote cloud gaming can already now be utilized by game companies as an alternative to traditional download-and-install games in order to support, e.g., anti-piracy protection. While the incentives for the game companies are relatively clear, the end-user experience has been investigated mainly from the viewpoint of latency. In this paper, we fill a research gap related to energy efficiency by showing that mobile phone users can save between 12 and 32 % power by utilizing remote gaming instead of playing with a native app. Our prototype is based on GamingAnywhere open-source software for which we have also integrated a gamepad for easier controls. We show power measurements both with a 2D and 3D games, and also additional measurements with a smart TV-stick.

  • Does freshwater macroinvertebrate diversity along a pH-gradient reflect adaptation to low pH?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Freshwater Biology. - Oxford : Blackwell Scientific. - 0046-5070 .- 1365-2427. ; 52:11, s. 2172-2183

    • 1. The impacts of anthropogenic surface water acidification are much better known than those of natural acidity. Recent studies have indicated biodiversity is not degraded and species composition unaltered in naturally acidic compared to circumneutral watercourses.2. Here, we use a geographically extensive dataset comprising sites in more than 200 Swedish streams to test whether the lack of effects on macroinvertebrate species diversity is due to exaptation and adaptation to natural acidity.3. To this end, we modelled pH associated with spring flood episodes, which inflict the most challenging hydrochemical conditions to the biota. We compared taxonomic richness and species composition along the modelled pH gradient in northern Sweden, where acidity is largely natural, with southern Sweden, a region influenced by significant anthropogenic acidification.4. We found Plecoptera richness did not respond to varying pH either in northern or southern Sweden. Ephemeroptera richness was sensitive to pH in both regions, while that of Trichoptera increased with increasing pH in southern Sweden, but decreased in the north. The taxonomic composition of Plecoptera changed along the pH gradient in both regions, whereas that of Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera changed more strongly with pH in southern Sweden.5. Our results support the hypothesis that stream invertebrates are able to tolerate low pH through exaptation or adaptation, but that this capability varies among taxonomic groups.

  • Characterization modelling and validation of a two-point loaded iron ore pellet
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Powder Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-5910 .- 1873-328X. ; 235, s. 126-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Iron ore pellets are sintered, centimetre-sized spheres of ore with high iron content. Together with carbonized coal, iron ore pellets are used in the production of steel. In the transportation from the pelletizing plants to the customers, the iron ore pellets are exposed to different stresses, resulting in degradation of strength and in some cases fragmentation. For future reliable numerical simulations of the handling and transportation of iron ore pellets, knowledge about their mechanical properties is needed. This paper describes the experimental and numerical work to investigate the mechanical properties of blast furnace iron ore pellets. To study the load deformation behaviour and the fracture of iron ore pellets, a number of point load tests are carried out and analysed. Material parameters for an elastic–plastic constitutive model with linear hardening for iron ore pellets are derived and expressed in terms of statistical means and standard deviations. Two finite element models are developed for different purposes. For the material parameter determination, a perfectly spherical model is used. The constitutive model is validated with a finite element model based on a representative optically scanned iron ore pellet. The proposed constitutive model is capturing the force displacement relation for iron ore pellets in a two-point load test. A stress based fracture criterion which takes the triaxiality into account is suggested and calculated as the maximum equivalent effective stress dependent on the three principal stresses at fracture. The results of this study show that the equivalent effective stress in the vicinity of the centre of an irregular model of an iron ore pellet is very close to the results of a model of a perfectly spherical iron ore pellet. The proposed fracture criterion indicates fracture in the representative iron ore pellet model coincident with the location of the crack developed during the test of the optically scanned iron ore pellet.
