    • Aim. In this paper we report on the rates of drug/alcohol use on acute psychiatric wards in relation to levels and intensity of exit security measures. Background. Many inpatient wards have become permanently locked, with staff concerned about the risk of patients leaving the ward and harming themselves or others, and of people bringing illicit substances into the therapeutic environment. Methods. In 2004/2005, a cross sectional survey on 136 acute psychiatric wards across three areas of England was undertaken. A comprehensive range of data including door locking and drug/alcohol use were collected over 6months on each ward. In 2006, supplementary data on door locking and exit security were collected. Door locking, additional exit security measures and substance misuse rates of the 136 wards were analysed and the associations between these were investigated. Results. No consistent relationships were found with exit security features, intensity of drug/alcohol monitoring procedures, or the locking of the ward door. There were indications that use of breath testing for alcohol might reduce usage and that the use of 'sniffer' dogs was associated with greater alcohol use. Conclusion. Greater exit security or locking of the ward door had no influence on rates of use of alcohol or illicit drugs by inpatients and thus cannot form part of any strategy to control substance use by inpatients. There are some grounds to believe that a greater use of screening might help reduce the frequency of alcohol/substance use on wards and may lead to a reduction in verbal abuse.

  • Multi-length scale modeling of martensitic transformations in stainless steels

    • In the present work a multi-length scale model is developed to study both the athermal and stress-assisted martensitic transformations in a single crystal of 301 type stainless steel. The microstructure evolution is simulated using elastoplastic phase-field simulations in three dimensions. The input data for the simulations is acquired from a combination of computational techniques and experimental works. The driving force for the transformation is calculated by using the CALPHAD technique and the elastic constants of the body-centered cubic phase are calculated by using ab initio method. The other input data is acquired from experimental works. The simulated microstructures resemble a lath-type martensitic microstructure, which is in good agreement with the experimental results obtained for a stainless steel of similar composition. The martensite habit plane predicted by the model is in accordance with experimental results. The Magee effect, i.e. formation of favorable martensite variants depending on the loading conditions, is observed in the simulations. The results also indicate that anisotropic loading conditions give rise to a significant anisotropy in the martensitic microstructure.

    • The Complex Absorbing Potential (CAP) method is widely used to compute resonances in Quantum Chemistry, both for scalar valued and matrix valued Hamiltonians. In the semiclassical limit h -> 0 we consider resonances near the real axis and we establish the CAP method rigorously in an abstract matrix valued setting by proving that resonances are perturbed eigenvalues of the nonselfadjoint CAP Hamiltonian, and vice versa. The proof is based on pseudodifferential operator theory and microlocal analysis.

    • Highly increased use of biomass production is placing great demands on Swedish forests. Several silvicultural measures can be implemented to increase forest production and fertilization being addressed in this paper is one. Forest companies are now increasingly applying fertilizer, with the main nutrient needed for high forest growth being nitrogen (N).This study investigated how commercial N fertilization (150 kg N/ha, including also Ca, Mg and B) of the 45 ha forest catchment Risfallet in central Sweden affected chemical composition and runoff export in stream water during one year after the fertilization. This well-defined and long-term monitored catchment proved very suitable for studies of water quality and nutrient losses. The fertilizer consisted of ammonium nitrate (50/50 ammonium and nitrate, respectively), plus calcium (Ca, 22 kg ha(-1)) and magnesium (Mg, 12 kg ha(-1)) to mitigate acidification and boron (B 1.1 kg ha(-1)) to compensate for decreased boron availability. The study was carried out according to the paired catchment method using a control area and a calibration period. Data from the after treatment period were compared with previous 25-year monitoring data for the catchment and also data for a similar 83 ha control catchment, Gusseltjarn, in the same region. During the first year after treatment, the nitrate concentration in stream water increased from 0.05 mg L-1 to 3.3 mg L-1 on average. Other elements showing increased concentrations were ammonium (300%), B (3-fold), Mg (80%), Ca (60%), potassium (K) (50%) and sodium (Na) (40%). The pH decreased in the first half-year by 0.2 pH-units. One year after treatment, 14% of the N applied had leached from the catchment. Crown Copyright (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.     • We present a fast algorithm for computing a watchman route in a simple polygon that is at most a constant factor longer than the shortest watchman route. The algorithm runs in $O(n\log n)$ time as compared to the best known algorithm that computes a shortest watchman route which runs in $O(n^6)$ time.
