  • Stockholdings of first-time and more experienced investors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Review of Behavioral Finance. - : EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1940-5979. ; 10:2, s. 146-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine whether socio-economic factors influence portfolio composition of individual investors investing in stocks for the first time and how these factors relate to stock portfolio performance. Design/methodology/approach The study uses cross-sectional time-series analysis to examine a unique and detailed data set of Swedish stockholdings. Findings The results show that first-time investors do not hold diversified portfolios. They experience high market risk and, on average, underperform more experienced investors. Males have higher unsystematic risk in their portfolios than females and older investors have more diversified portfolios compared to younger investors. Research limitations/implications The results show that individual investors should improve their insights by incorporating risk when investing in stocks. Practical implications Given the results of this paper, the movement from defined benefit to defined contribution pension schemes in many countries raises the issue of the need to better understand and monitor the risks in stock portfolios. Originality/value This study provides insights into whether socio-economic factors influence portfolio composition, the extent to which socio-economic factors and portfolio characteristics relate to portfolio returns, and whether portfolio performance between first-time and more experienced investors differs.

  • Predicting Signed Distance Functions for Visual Instance Segmentation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 33rd Annual Workshop of the Swedish-Artificial-Intelligence-Society (SAIS). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781665442367 - 9781665442374 ; , s. 5-10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Visual instance segmentation is a challenging problem and becomes even more difficult if objects of interest varies unconstrained in shape. Some objects are well described by a rectangle, however, this is hardly always the case. Consider for instance long, slender objects such as ropes. Anchor-based approaches classify predefined bounding boxes as either negative or positive and thus provide a limited set of shapes that can be handled. Defining anchor-boxes that fit well to all possible shapes leads to an infeasible number of prior boxes. We explore a different approach and propose to train a neural network to compute distance maps along different directions. The network is trained at each pixel to predict the distance to the closest object contour in a given direction. By pooling the distance maps we obtain an approximation to the signed distance function (SDF). The SDF may then be thresholded in order to obtain a foreground-background segmentation. We compare this segmentation to foreground segmentations obtained from the state-of-the-art instance segmentation method YOLACT. On the COCO dataset, our segmentation yields a higher performance in terms of foreground intersection over union (IoU). However, while the distance maps contain information on the individual instances, it is not straightforward to map them to the full instance segmentation. We still believe that this idea is a promising research direction for instance segmentation, as it better captures the different shapes found in the real world.

  • Co-producing public value through IoT and social media
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: dg.o '18 Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference on Digital Government Research. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450365260
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past decades a number of new perspectives on public administration have emerged, for instance New Public Service, New Public Governance and Digital Era Governance. Several of these perspectives seem to have the concept of co-production in common, implying that the public sector engages citizens to take part in the design and execution of services. A rather new way to achieve co-production in the public sector has been to utilize crowdsourcing or social media monitoring. However, the way these 'methods' has been implemented in public sector is often associated with difficulties, and to overcome some of them we propose an Internet of Things (IoT) approach that hopefully will create improved conditions for data-driven business development, and innovative citizen sourcing. At present, the approach is tested in a local government in northern Sweden in which we have set up a Low Power Wide Area Network (LoRa) designed for wireless battery-operated sensors. Although the test is still in an initial stage, results so far are promising and combining IoT and social media may be one way of creating co-production of public sector services.

  • Treatment with insulin lispro changes the insulin profile but does not affect the plasma concentrations of IGF-I and IGFBP-1 in type 1 diabetes
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Clinical Endocrinology. - : Wiley. - 0300-0664 .- 1365-2265. ; 55:1, s. 107-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE IGF-I levels in patients with type 1 diabetes without endogenous insulin production are low. Our aim was to examine whether the plasma insulin profile obtained by treatment with the insulin analogue lispro has a different effect on plasma concentrations of IGF-I and IGFBP-1 than that seen during treatment with conventional human insulin (regular insulin).DESIGN AND PATIENTS Twelve patients with type 1 diabetes, age 47·8 ± 2·4 years (mean ± SEM), body mass index 26·5 ± 1·0 kg/m2, diabetes duration 30·5 ± 3·2 years participated in this open label randomized cross-over study. IGF-I and IGFBP-1 levels were measured at the end of 6 weeks treatment with each insulin being administered by a continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion. IGF-I was measured fasting while IGFBP-1, free insulin and blood glucose were measured fasting and repeatedly after a morning meal preceded by an insulin bolus dose.RESULTS Lispro gave a marked insulin peak of 135 ± 20 pmol/l 50 minutes after injection. After an initial rapid rise, human regular insulin reached a plateau of approximately 50 pmol/l. The plasma free insulin area under the curve (AUC) from 0710 h to 0910 h was more than twice as large on lispro as on regular insulin (P = 0·01). Plasma IGF-I concentration was 78·8 ± 10·9 µg/l on lispro and 82·3 ± 10·5 µg/l on human regular insulin (not significant). AUC for IGFBP-1 did not show a significant difference even when divided from 0710 h to 0910 h and from 0930 h to 1430 h. Blood glucose AUC after administration of the bolus was significantly lower during treatment with lispro (P = 0·006) but glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) was 6·4 ± 0·2% on both therapies.CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that the effect of lispro on IGF-I and IGFBP-1 in patients with type 1 diabetes does not differ from that of human regular insulin.

  • Processing and Properties of Ferroelectric Ag(Ta,Nb)O3 Thin Films
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • High tunability and low loss tangent of ferroelectric thinfilms offer unique opportunity for the development of variousmicrowave devices. Silver tantalate niobate, which showsexcellent microwave properties, was selected for this study.Ag(Ta,Nb)O3(ATN) showed week dielectric dispersion in a widefrequency range from 1 kHz up to 100 GHz, negligible losses upto 30 GHz, and ease to tailor paraelectric state in a widetemperature range by Ta:Nb ratio. This thesis is mainly based on the synthesis andcharacterization of niobate ferroelectric ATN thin films. Thinfilms for various measurements were prepared by pulsed laserdeposition and rf-magnetron sputtering techniques.X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern show that ATN/Pt80Ir20films have been found to be (001) preferentiallyoriented, while the epitaxial quality of ATN/LaAlO3heterostructures have been ascertained. Dielectricproperties were analyzed by measuring the relationship betweendielectric permittivity and frequency as well as dielectricpermittivity and temperature. Reliable tracing of theferroelectric hysteresis polarization versus electric loopsindicate the ferroelectric state in ATN films at temperaturebelow 125 K and yields the remanant polarization of 0.4µC/cm2@ 77 K.The fundamental current-voltage behavior in Ag(Ta,Nb)O3ferroelectric films was measured usingMe/Ag(Ta,Nb)O3/Pt80Ir20, Me = Pd, Au, Cr, and Al, vertical capacitivecell structures with different top electrodes. Various kinds ofconduction mechanisms such as Schottky emission, Poole-Frenkel,Fowler-Nordheim, and ionic conduction were classified. Finally, by fabricating interdigital capacitors on the oxidesubstrates, the characteristics and performances of Ag(Ta,Nb)O3varactors were examined. Au/Cr/ATN/LaAlO3interdigital capacitors exhibited loss tangent aslow as 0.0033 @ 1 MHz, weak frequency dispersion of 5.8 % in 1kHz to 1 MHz range, tunability as high as 16.4 %,K-factor (tunability/tanδ) higher than 48.

  • Does validation and alliance during the multimodal investigation affect patients' acceptance of chronic pain? : An experimental single case study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Pain. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 1877-8860 .- 1877-8879. ; 19:1, s. 73-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims: Among chronic pain patients who are referred to participation in a multimodal rehabilitation program (MMRP), pain catastrophizing and dysfunctional pain coping is common. In many cases it may have driven the patient to a range of unsuccessful searches for biomedical explanations and pain relief. Often these efforts have left patients feeling disappointed, hopeless and misunderstood. The MMRP process can be preceded by a multimodal investigation (MMI) where an important effort is to validate the patient to create a good alliance and begin a process of change towards acceptance of the pain. However, whether the MMI has such therapeutic effect is unclear. Using a repeated single case experimental design, the purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of MMI by studying changes in patients' experience of validation, alliance, acceptance of pain, coping, catastrophizing, and depression before and during the MMI process. Methods: Participants were six chronic pain patients with high levels of pain catastrophizing (>25 on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale) and risk for long term disability (>105 on the Örebro Musculoskeletal Pain Screening Questionnaire) who were subjected to MMI before planned MMRP. For each patient, weekly self-report measures of validation, alliance and acceptance of pain were obtained during a 5-10-weeks baseline, before the MMI started. Subsequently, these measures were also obtained during a 6-8 weeks MMI process in order to enable comparative analyses. Additionally, pain coping, depression and pain catastrophizing were measured using standardized questionnaires before and after the MMI.Results: Irrespective of experiences of validation and alliance before MMI, all six patients felt validated and experienced a good alliance during MMI. Acceptance of pain improved only in one patient during MMI. None of the patients showed clinically relevant improvement in pain coping, depression or catastrophizing after the MMI.Conclusions: The patients did not change their acceptance and pain coping strategies despite of good alliance and experience of validation during the MMI process. Even if the design of this study precludes generalization to chronic pain patients in general, the results suggest that MMI may not have a therapeutic effect.
