  • Artificial Cognitive Systems : A Primer
  • 2014
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book offers a concise and accessible introduction to the emerging field of artificial cognitive systems. Cognition, both natural and artificial, is about anticipating the need for action and developing the capacity to predict the outcome of those actions. Drawing on artificial intelligence, developmental psychology, and cognitive neuroscience, the field of artificial cognitive systems has as its ultimate goal the creation of computer-based systems that can interact with humans and serve society in a variety of ways. This primer brings together recent work in cognitive science and cognitive robotics to offer readers a solid grounding on key issues.

  • Disaster Risk Reduction and Health : The Potential of Health Registers for Public Health Monitoring
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Prehospital and Disaster Medicine.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction:The Sendai Framework seeks to substantially reduce disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods, health, and other assets including persons, communities, and countries. The framework focuses on reducing mortality while increasing population wellbeing, early warning, and promotion of health systems resilience. The use of scientific evidence to inform policy and formulate effective initiatives and interventions is crucial to disaster risk reduction within health. Different instruments and methodologies are available to guide policy and operations. The potential value of routinely collected patient data from health registers is that they can provide pre-event health and comparison group data without burdening affected populations.Aim:The current contribution aims to illustrate how health registers can help monitor the health impact of natural and human-made disasters. Methods:Patient data from health registers of general practitioners and other health professionals, sometimes combined with other registers and data sources, have been utilized to monitor the health impact of disasters and environmental hazards in the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden since 2000.Results:Health registers allowed monitoring of mental health problems, medically unexplained symptoms, chronic health problems, and social problems. These were compared to groups not directly exposed. The health impact and care utilization was tracked after the fireworks explosion in Enschede affecting inhabitants of the neighborhood (2000; data range 1999-2005), children and parents after the Volendam café fire (2001; data range 2000-2006), Swedish survivors of the Tsunami in Southeast Asia (2004; data range 2004-2010), and parents of children affected by the terrorist attack on Utøya (2011; data range 2008-2014).Discussion:Health systems with registers have an important advantage when it comes to the potential for monitoring population health, and perhaps offer early warnings of pandemics. However, data generation should be closely connected to policy-making before and during the planning and evaluation of public health intervention.

  • Heavy metal ion sensing in water using surface plasmon resonance of metallic nanostructures
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Groundwater for Sustainable Development. - : Elsevier. - 2352-801X. ; 1:1-2, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heavy metal contamination in water and other ecosystems is one of the major environmental issues and already gaining significant attention across the world. For monitoring heavy metals in the environmental ecosystem, optical sensors are getting popular due to their high sensitivity and ease of use. Application of nanomaterials in the sensor elements further improves the sensitivity due to their large surface-to-volume ration, high reactivity, high degree of functionalization and size-dependent properties. This article mainly reviews the application of various metallic nanostructures for heavy metal ion sensing based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). SPR sensors are widely applied in real time monitoring of heavy metals, chemical and biological analytes etc., because of their ability to efficiently detect and quantify these contaminants even at much diluted conditions (ng/L levels). In this article, SPR sensors fabricated with several metallic nanostructures, such as gold and silver, and their shape and size effects on sensor performance for heavy metal ion detection is discussed. Techniques used to improve the performance of such SPR sensors are also reviewed briefly.

  • Dielectric function and thermodynamic properties of jellium in the GW approximation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 95:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fully self-consistent GW approximation is an established method for electronic structure calculations. Its most serious deficiency is known to be an incorrect prediction of the dielectric response. In this work, we examine the GW approximation for the homogeneous electron gas and find that problems with the dielectric response are drastically improved by enforcing the particle-number conservation law in the polarization function. We also find that previously reported data for the ground-state energy contradict each other well outside of reported error bounds. Some of these results created a false impression of how accurate the fully self-consistent GW approximation is. Our two independent implementations of the GW method agree with the data plotted in X.-Z. Yan [Phys. Rev. E 84, 016706 (2011)], thus confirming only that data set. We also present values for other key Fermi-liquid properties.

  • Adult (step) parent-child relationships in complex families : a latent profile analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1322-9400 .- 1839-3543. ; 29:2, s. 660-682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study identifies a typology of adult stepparent-child and biological parent-child relationships by studying the structures in which relationship dimensions - affection, contact, support, and conflict - combine, building on the intergenerational solidarity paradigm. The existing literature on family complexity, which has analysed parent-child relationships one-dimensionally, and exclusively considered positive dimensions, requires a more integrated approach to describe the diverse landscape of (step)parent-child relationships. Using the OKiN anchor data, based on a stratified random sample of Dutch adults (aged 25-45), this study simultaneously analysed closeness, contact, support, and conflict in stepparent-child (N = 3,896) and biological parentchild relationships (N = 9,467), using latent profile analysis (LPA). These data provided adults' reports on up to four relationships to their (step)parents. LPA revealed four relationship profiles among biological parent-child as well as stepparent-child dyads: harmonious, ambivalent, detached, and conflictual. One relationship profile, disharmonious, was unique for step-dyads. Although the distribution over these profiles differs between stepdyads and biological dyads, it seems more strongly differentiated by parental separation, co-residential history, and parental gender. This study reveals the multi-dimensional diversity that lies beneath the comparison of averages of single dimensions of parent-child relationships, and calls for more nuance in studying family ties.
