  • Dynamics of Ti, N, and TiNx (x=1-3) admolecule transport on TiN(001) surfaces
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 86:15, s. 155443-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use classical molecular dynamics and the modified embedded atom method formalism to investigate the dynamics of atomic-scale transport on a low-index model compound surface, TiN(001). Our simulations, totaling 0.25 mu s for each case study, follow the pathways and migration kinetics of Ti and N adatoms, as well as TiNx complexes with x = 1-3, which are known to contribute to the growth of TiN thin films by reactive deposition from Ti, N-2, and N precursors. The simulations are carried out at 1000 K, within the optimal range for TiN(001) epitaxial growth. We find Ti adatoms to be the highest-mobility species on TiN(001), with the primary migration path involving jumps of one nearest-neighbor distance d(NN) between adjacent fourfold hollow sites along in-plane andlt; 100 andgt; channels. Long jumps, 2d(NN), are also observed, but at much lower frequency. N adatoms, which exhibit significantly lower migration rates than Ti, diffuse along in-plane andlt; 110 andgt; directions and, when they intersect other N atoms, associatively form N-2 molecules, which desorb at kinetic rates. As expected, TiN and TiN3 complexes migrate at even lower rates with complex diffusion pathways involving rotations, translations, and rototranslations. TiN2 trimers, however, are shown to have surprisingly high diffusion rates, above that of N adatoms and almost half that of Ti adatoms. TiN3 motion is dominated by in-place rotation with negligible diffusion.

  • Experiments revealing the formation of refractory methylmercury pools in natural sediments and soils
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7037 .- 1872-9533. ; 328, s. 76-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methylation and demethylation of mercury (Hg) are well recognized as processes controlling the concentrations of monomethylmercury (MeHg) in natural environments, and thus the pool of Hg available for biological uptake. In addition, studies have indicated the potential role of refractory MeHg pools (not readily available for demethylation) on the pool of MeHg in, for example, sediments and soils. These studies, however, remain scarce and often the role of refractory MeHg pools is overlooked. Here, we have conducted incubation experiments aiming to quantify refractory MeHg pools in contrasting environments. In our study, sediments (from lakes and brackish seawater sites) and soils (from forests and marshes) were incubated with isotopically enriched Hg tracers (Me201Hg and 198Hg) for up to 6 weeks. To follow the potential formation of refractory MeHg pools, %MeHg (fraction of Hg occurring as MeHg) after the first week of incubation for the added 198Hg and Me201Hg tracers, and ambient Hg was compared. The high %MeHg for the 198Hg tracer compared to the %MeHg of ambient Hg suggests a higher initial availability of added 198Hg in comparison to the ambient Hg in the sediments. For the soils, low %MeHg for the 198Hg tracer suggests low Hg methylation rates. The discrepancy observed between the sediments and soils can be explained by a higher availability of inorganic Hg in the sediments, as suggested by the Hg thermal fractional analysis conducted. The %MeHg steady state for the added Me201Hg tracer remained high (>17%) throughout the experiment, suggesting refractory pools of MeHg to be built-up in all tested sediments and soils. Together, the %MeHg for the added Hg tracers demonstrate that a significant fraction of the MeHg produced in sediments and soils is sequestered into refractory pools not readily available for demethylation. Furthermore, these results show that conditions favoring net methylation in sediments and soil could result in elevated concentrations of MeHg for a significant amount of time (months) even if the conditions favoring Hg net methylation are only temporary.

  • A parametric method for optimal design of two-dimensional cascades
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part A, journal of power and energy. - : SAGE Publications. - 0957-6509 .- 2041-2967. ; 215:4, s. 465-473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A parametric method for optimal design of two-dimensional cascades, based on the coupling between a genetic algorithm and a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, is introduced. The results of cascade geometry optimization for a large range of inlet and outlet flow angle pairs are presented. The method is a simple as well as effective tool for the optimal design of cascades for axial flow pumps.

  • Semi-stochastic modification of second-order radial derivative of Abel-Poisson's formula for validating satellite gravity gradiometry data
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Advances in Space Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0273-1177 .- 1879-1948. ; 47:4, s. 757-767
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The geoid can be used to validate the satellite gravity gradiometry data. Validation of such data is important prior to their downward continuation because of amplification of the data errors through this process. In this paper, the second-order radial derivative of Abel-Poisson's formula is modified stochastically to reduce the effect of the far-zone geoid and generate the second-order radial derivative of geopotential at 250 km level. The numerical studies over Fennoscandia show that this method yields the gradients with an error of 10 mE and when the long wavelength of geoid is removed from the estimator and restored after the computations (remove compute restore) the error will be in 1 mE level. We name this method semi-stochastic modification. The best case scenario is found when the degree of modification of the integral formula is 200 and the long wavelength geoid to degree 100 is removed and restored. In this case the geoid should have a resolution of 15' x 15' and the integration should be performed over a cap size of 3 degrees.

  • Time for an Urban (Re)evolution – Negotiating Body, Space and Food
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: PARSE Conference: The 1st PARSE Biennial Research Conference on TIME , Nov 4-6 2015, Göteborg SE. ; , s. 20-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Food is rhythmical and reoccurring, permeating a major part of our everyday city lives; yet it is rarely considered in urban design. There is a missing link in the food-to-time rapport with urban space and how the body relates to it, in which the concept of a cyclical process has been concealed from the urban experience. In order to confront this, this paper explores and evaluates the artistic method of butoh dance in order to bring the body into the urban food discourse performatively. Butoh sheds light on how the inclusion of embodiment within imagineering can emphasize the timely aspect of urban space and food production as a cyclical process. Imagineering is a design technique that uses narrative to generate an imagined emergence of a concept. By placing the body at the centre of my methodology, I explore the negotiation it has with time, space and food. From within architectural research I pose the question: How can the interaction of the body in butoh practice and food production, set in relation to one another, improve the understanding and handling of urban space where time is an aspect in design? My methodology is framed in micro and macro perspective lenses, where the butoh body is brought into the process of shaping urban environment through techniques such as: rebellion, interaction, mimesis, agro-roots, transformation, metamorphosis and reflection. The micro lens is explored through the bodily choreography and detail of body technique in a butoh dance performance at the AHA festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. The macro lens is implemented in an experimental-making of an ecological living system and foodscape called ‘Paperscapes,’ which becomes the stage for that performance. These embodiments of making and performing are part of a process of imagineering, drawn from the butoh metaphor and biomimicry, to enable an imagined emergence of another way of approaching urban foodscapes. In exploring the butoh body in its spatial-to-corporeal relationship, the Japanese spatio-temporal concept of ma – an interval, gap, opening, awareness – helps understand how temporal progression relies on space awareness, how spatial progression relies on time, and the potential transformation which exists in this ‘interval’. The use of butoh exposes the landscape in an ‘circular-timed’ orientation, and this sheds light on the transformation of everyday collective ‘rhythms’ and behaviour with food.

  • Evaluation of intraoperative touch imprint cytology on axillary sentinel lymph nodes in invasive breast carcinomas, a retrospective study of 1227 patients comparing sensitivity in the different tumor subtypes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Plos One. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 13:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Intraoperative evaluation of the axillary sentinel lymph node (SLN) in patients with breast carcinoma reduces the need of re-operations in cases where an axillary completion lymph node dissection (CLND) is indicated. Different methods have been used to determine the SLN status intraoperatively, e.g. frozen section histology (FS) and touch imprint cytology (TIC). The sensitivity of intraoperative TIC examination on SLN is not consistent between different studies and varies according to different tumor histologic subtypes, tumor size and the age of the patient. The aim of this study was to describe the specificity and sensitivity of TIC and to compare TIC sensitivity in the different histological subtypes of breast carcinoma. A retrospective review was performed of 1227 consecutive clinically node negative breast cancer patients treated with sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) with intraoperative TIC between the years 2003 and 2008. The SLN was bisected and stained using the May-Grun-wald-Giemsa method and immunocytochemically with the antibody MNF-116. The overall sensitivity of the TIC test was 68.6% and the specificity was 99.8%. There was no statistically significant difference between the detection of SLN metastases from ductal carcinoma versus lobular carcinoma. The sensitivity improved over the period of the study. TIC is highly specific with an acceptable overall sensitivity. The sensitivity increased under the period of the study and it was higher in cases with larger size of the primary tumor. There was no difference in TIC sensitivity between the different histological subtypes.

  • Lipocalin prostaglandin D synthase and PPARγ2 coordinate to regulate carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in vivo
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mice lacking Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor γ2 (PPARγ2) have unexpectedly normal glucose tolerance and mild insulin resistance. Mice lacking PPARγ2 were found to have elevated levels of Lipocalin prostaglandin D synthase (L-PGDS) expression in BAT and subcutaneous white adipose tissue (WAT). To determine if induction of L-PGDS was compensating for a lack of PPARγ2, we crossed L-PGDS KO mice to PPARγ2 KO mice to generate Double Knock Out mice (DKO). Using DKO mice we demonstrated a requirement of L-PGDS for maintenance of subcutaneous WAT (scWAT) function. In scWAT, DKO mice had reduced expression of thermogenic genes, the de novo lipogenic program and the lipases ATGL and HSL. Despite the reduction in markers of lipolysis in scWAT, DKO mice had a normal metabolic rate and elevated serum FFA levels compared to L-PGDS KO alone. Analysis of intra-abdominal white adipose tissue (epididymal WAT) showed elevated expression of mRNA and protein markers of lipolysis in DKO mice, suggesting that DKO mice may become more reliant on intra-abdominal WAT to supply lipid for oxidation. This switch in depot utilisation from subcutaneous to epididymal white adipose tissue was associated with a worsening of whole organism metabolic function, with DKO mice being glucose intolerant, and having elevated serum triglyceride levels compared to any other genotype. Overall, L-PGDS and PPARγ2 coordinate to regulate carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.
