  • Violence, Sex or Work? Claims-making against the Swedish ban on the purchase of sexual services on the Internet
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Social Work & Society. - 1613-8953. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internationally there is an on-going political struggle regarding whether to define prostitution as violence, sex or work. In Sweden, however, the national law that bans purchase of sexual services, by defining prostitution as violence against women, has strong support. The aim of this article is to identify and describe claims-making and mobilisation on the Internet against Swedish prostitution policy, and to explain arguments and positions by relating them to different ‘prostitution regimes’. Through qualitative text analysis of websites, three different critical positions against the Swedish law and its implementation by Social Services are identified, which correspond to three of the regimes considered: legalisation, toleration and abolition. Such positions are upheld by three collective actors mobilising sex clients, sex workers, prostitutes and their allies. Results suggest that other countries’ policies and their implementation are important inspirations for critics of the Swedish policy on prostitution, not least through mobilisation at European level.

  • Workplace violence : A threat to autonomy and professional discretion
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk Forskning. - Huddinge : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 2002-066X .- 0038-0342. ; 57:3-4, s. 249-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although many theories have been developed and a great amount of research has been conducted on autonomy and professional discretion, knowledge on the extent to which fear of being subjected to workplace violence might restrict such autonomy and professional discretion being used is limited. This article draws on a survey study (N=1,236) and compares the experiences of workplace violence of Swedish social workers, teachers and journalists. The aim of the article is to determine how digitalisation could be linked to workplace violence and also determine the extent to which workplace violence could affect the autonomy and professional discretion of these professional groups and prevent them from carrying out their democratic role. The results show the differences regarding where and how these professionals received threats and provides an alarming picture of the implications of such threats. 40% of the respondents had considered stopping working on a specific social problem, topic, target group, or task due to their fear of being subjected to hate, threats and harassment.

  • Exploring xylose metabolism in Spathaspora species : XYL1.2 from Spathaspora passalidarum as the key for efficient anaerobic xylose fermentation in metabolic engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Biotechnology for Biofuels. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1754-6834. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The production of ethanol and other fuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic materials is dependent of efficient xylose conversion. Xylose fermentation capacity in yeasts is usually linked to xylose reductase (XR) accepting NADH as cofactor. The XR from Scheffersomyces stipitis, which is able to use NADH as cofactor but still prefers NADPH, has been used to generate recombinant xylose-fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Novel xylose-fermenting yeasts species, as those from the Spathaspora clade, have been described and are potential sources of novel genes to improve xylose fermentation in S. cerevisiae. Results: Xylose fermentation by six strains from different Spathaspora species isolated in Brazil, plus the Sp. passalidarum type strain (CBS 10155T), was characterized under two oxygen-limited conditions. The best xylose-fermenting strains belong to the Sp. passalidarum species, and their highest ethanol titers, yields, and productivities were correlated to higher XR activity with NADH than with NADPH. Among the different Spathaspora species, Sp. passalidarum appears to be the sole harboring two XYL1 genes: XYL1.1, similar to the XYL1 found in other Spathaspora and yeast species and XYL1.2, with relatively higher expression level. XYL1.1p and XYL1.2p from Sp. passalidarum were expressed in S. cerevisiae TMB 3044 and XYL1.1p was confirmed to be strictly NADPH-dependent, while XYL1.2p to use both NADPH and NADH, with higher activity with the later. Recombinant S. cerevisiae strains expressing XYL1.1p did not show anaerobic growth in xylose medium. Under anaerobic xylose fermentation, S. cerevisiae TMB 3504, which expresses XYL1.2p from Sp. passalidarum, revealed significant higher ethanol yield and productivity than S. cerevisiae TMB 3422, which harbors XYL1p N272D from Sc. stipitis in the same isogenic background (0.40 vs 0.34 g g CDW -1 and 0.33 vs 0.18 g g CDW -1 h-1, respectively). Conclusion: This work explored a new clade of xylose-fermenting yeasts (Spathaspora species) towards the engineering of S. cerevisiae for improved xylose fermentation. The new S. cerevisiae TMB 3504 displays higher XR activity with NADH than with NADPH, with consequent improved ethanol yield and productivity and low xylitol production. This meaningful advance in anaerobic xylose fermentation by recombinant S. cerevisiae (using the XR/XDH pathway) paves the way for the development of novel industrial pentose-fermenting strains.

  • How smart is specialisation? An analysis of specialisation patterns in knowledge production
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Science and Public Policy. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0302-3427 .- 1471-5430. ; 43:4, s. 562-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To understand how the specialisation patterns of cities differ among scientific fields, we study patterns of knowledge production in Astrophysics, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Organic Chemistry in the period 1996-2012. Using keywords from journal publications, we find systematic differences across scientific fields, but remarkable similarities across cities within each field. Biotechnology shows a turbulent pattern with comparative advantages that are short lasting, and with few related topics are available for research locations. Astrophysics-and in later years Nanotechnology-show a pattern of stable rankings, comparative advantages that last longer, and many related topics potentially available for research locations. Organic Chemistry has an intermediate position. Thus, fields of knowledge production have fundamentally different characteristics that require different smart specialisation strategies taking into account the differences in accumulation and relatedness.

  • Outcome and management in neonates with gastroschisis in the third millennium-a single-centre observational study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pediatrics. - : Springer Nature. - 0340-6199 .- 1432-1076. ; 181:6, s. 2291-2298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gastroschisis is one of the most common congenital malformations in paediatric surgery. However, there is no consensus regarding the optimal management. The aims of this study were to investigate the management and outcome and to identify predictors of outcome in gastroschisis. A retrospective observational study of neonates with gastroschisis born between 1999 and 2020 was undertaken. Data was extracted from the medical records and Cox regression analysis was used to identify predictors of outcome measured by length of hospital stay (LOS) and duration of parenteral nutrition (PN). In total, 114 patients were included. Caesarean section was performed in 105 (92.1%) at a median gestational age (GA) of 36 weeks (range 29-38) whereof (46) 43.8% were urgent. Primary closure was achieved in 82% of the neonates. Overall survival was 98.2%. One of the deaths was caused by abdominal compartment syndrome and one patient with intestinal failure-associated liver disease died from sepsis. None of the deceased patients was born after 2005. Median time on mechanical ventilation was 22 h. Low GA, staged closure, intestinal atresia, and sepsis were independent predictors of longer LOS and duration on PN. In addition, male sex was an independent predictor of longer LOS. Conclusion: Management of gastroschisis according to our protocol was successful with a high survival rate, no deaths in neonates born after 2005, and favourable results in LOS, duration on PN, and time on mechanical ventilation compared to other reports. Multicentre registry with long-term follow-up is required to establish the best management of gastroschisis.
