- Although many theories have been developed and a great amount of research has been conducted on autonomy and professional discretion, knowledge on the extent to which fear of being subjected to workplace violence might restrict such autonomy and professional discretion being used is limited. This article draws on a survey study (N=1,236) and compares the experiences of workplace violence of Swedish social workers, teachers and journalists. The aim of the article is to determine how digitalisation could be linked to workplace violence and also determine the extent to which workplace violence could affect the autonomy and professional discretion of these professional groups and prevent them from carrying out their democratic role. The results show the differences regarding where and how these professionals received threats and provides an alarming picture of the implications of such threats. 40% of the respondents had considered stopping working on a specific social problem, topic, target group, or task due to their fear of being subjected to hate, threats and harassment.

- In this paper we examine whether China has benefited more from spending on R&D than other countries by conducting a meta-analysis of the relevant literature on a large number of countries at different stages of economic development. The results suggest that the growth-enhancing effect of R&D spending in China has been significantly weaker than that of other countries. It is thus unlikely that R&D spending has been successful as a key contributing factor to economic growth in China.

- We exposed bovine aortic endothelial cells in culture to native LDL (n-LDL) and LDL modulated by dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO-LDL), dimethylsulfoxide-soluble particles from cigarette smoke (DSP-LDL) or Cu2+ (Cu(2+)-LDL) to explore the hypothesis that these LDL-forms might influence interactions between endothelial and smooth muscle cells. It was shown that 3H-thymidine incorporation into endothelial cells was decreased by DMSO-LDL, DSP-LDL and Cu(2+)-LDL compared to n-LDL, while it was higher by DSP-LDL compared to its control i.e. DMSO-LDL. These effects could be transferred by conditioned medium to smooth muscle cell cultures. DSP-LDL or Cu(2+)-LDL decreased total cellular protein of endothelial cells. Initial (15 min) prostacyclin release from endothelial cells was increased by all LDL preparations compared to medium without LDL, most pronounced for Cu(2+)-LDL. If n-LDL was control, only Cu(2+)-LDL significantly increased the release of prostacyclin during 15 min and during 24 h. The release of prostacyclin assayed after 24 h was depressed by DSP-LDL compared to DMSO-LDL. This study demonstrated that interactions between endothelial and smooth muscle cells could be influenced by LDL treated by dimethylsulfoxide-soluble particles from cigarette smoke or by Cu2+, and their effects were not similar. DSP-LDL, in contrast to Cu(2+)-LDL, significantly decreased the release of prostacyclin by endothelial cells after 24 h incubations and via endothelial cell conditioned medium stimulated smooth muscle cell proliferation judged by increased 3H-thymidine incorporation. The results might be of relevance for atherogenesis.

The dynamic behaviour of slender structures with cross-sectional cracks

- A dynamic model for beams with cross-sectional cracks is discussed. It is shown that a crack can be represented by a consistent, static flexibility matrix. Two different methods for the determination of the flexibility matrix are discussed. If the static stress intensity factors are known, the flexibility matrix can be determined from an integration of these stress intensity factors. Alternatively, static finite element calculations can be used for the determination of the flexibility matrix. Both methods are demonstrated in the present paper. The mathematical model was applied to an edge-cracked cantilevered beam and the eigenfrequencies were determined for different crack lengths and crack positions. These results were compared to experimentally obtained eigenfrequencies. In the experiments, the cracks were modelled by sawing cuts. The theoretical results were, for all crack lengths, in excellent agreement with the experimental data. The dynamic stress intensity factor for a longitudinally vibrating, centrally cracked bar was determined as well. The results compared very well with dynamic finite element calculations. The crack closure effect was experimentally investigated for an edge-cracked beam with a fatigue crack. It was found that the eigenfrequencies decreased, as functions of crack length, at a much slower rate than in the case of an open crack.

Dismantling internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for tinnitus : The contribution of applied relaxation: A randomized controlled trial

- Background: Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) for tinnitus is an evidence-based intervention. The components of ICBT for tinnitus have, however, not been dismantled and thus the effectiveness of the different therapeutic components is unknown. It is, furthermore, not known if heterogeneous tinnitus subgroups respond differently to ICBT. Aims: This dismantling study aimed to explore the contribution of applied relaxation within ICBT for reducing tinnitus distress and comorbidities associated with tinnitus. A secondary aim was to assess whether outcomes varied for three tinnitus subgroups, namely those with significant tinnitus severity, those with low tinnitus severity, and those with significant depression. Methods: A parallel randomized controlled trial design (n = 126) was used to compare audiologist-guided applied relaxation with the full ICBT intervention. Recruitment was online and via the intervention platform. Assessments were completed at four-time points including a 2-month follow-up period. The primary outcome was tinnitus severity as measured by the Tinnitus Functional Index. Secondary outcomes were included for anxiety, depression, insomnia, negative tinnitus cognitions, health-related quality of life, hearing disability, and hyperacusis. Treatment engagement variables including the number of logins, number of modules opened, and the number of messages sent. Both an intention-to-treat analysis and completers only analysis were undertaken. Results: Engagement was low which compromised results as the full intervention was undertaken by few participants. Both the ICBT and applied relaxation resulted in large reduction of tinnitus severity (within-group effect sizes d = 0.87 and 0.68, respectively for completers only analysis), which were maintained, or further improved at follow-up. These reductions in tinnitus distress were greater for the ICBT group, with a small effect size differences (between-group d = 0.15 in favor of ICBT for completers only analysis). Tinnitus distress decreased the most at post-intervention for those with significant depression at baseline. Both ICBT and applied relaxation contributed to significant reductions on most secondary outcome measures, with no group differences, except for a greater reduction of hyperacusis in the ICBT group. Conclusion: Due to poor compliance partly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic results were compromised. Further studies employing strategies to improve compliance and engagement are required.
