  • Multiscale modelling for tokamak pedestals
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Plasma Physics. - 0022-3778 .- 1469-7807. ; 84:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pedestal modelling is crucial to predict the performance of future fusion devices. Current modelling efforts suffer either from a lack of kinetic physics, or an excess of computational complexity. To ameliorate these problems, we take a first-principles multiscale approach to the pedestal. We will present three separate sets of equations, covering the dynamics of edge localised modes (ELMs), the inter-ELM pedestal and pedestal turbulence, respectively. Precisely how these equations should be coupled to each other is covered in detail. This framework is completely self-consistent; it is derived from first principles by means of an asymptotic expansion of the fundamental Vlasov-Landau-Maxwell system in appropriate small parameters. The derivation exploits the narrowness of the pedestal region, the smallness of the thermal gyroradius and the low plasma beta (the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressures) typical of current pedestal operation to achieve its simplifications. The relationship between this framework and gyrokinetics is analysed, and possibilities to directly match our systems of equations onto multiscale gyrokinetics are explored. A detailed comparison between our model and other models in the literature is performed. Finally, the potential for matching this framework onto an open-field-line region is briefly discussed.

  • Cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers mirror rate of cognitive decline.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD. - 1875-8908. ; 34:4, s. 949-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to predict future decline in cognitive systems using the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers 42 amino acid form of amyloid-β (Aβ42) and total tau (T-tau) is not fully understood. In a clinical sample ranging from cognitively healthy to dementia (n = 326), linear regression models were performed in order to investigate the ability of CSF biomarkers to predict cognitive decline in all cognitive domains from baseline to 2-year follow-up. Gender, age, and years of education were included as covariates. In patients with subjective cognitive impairment, T-tau had a small impact on executive functions (r2 = 0.07). T-tau had a small to moderate influence (r2 = 0.06-0.11) on all cognitive functions with the exception of visuospatial functions in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In patients with dementia, the impact of T-tau was large (r2 = 0.29) on semantic memory. Aβ42 had a small effect (r2 = 0.07) on speed and executive functions in MCI. In patients with dementia, Aβ42 had a moderate influence (r2 = 0.13-0.24) on semantic and verbal working memory/fluency. Our results speak in favor of the notion that CSF biomarkers reflect the rate of cognitive decline across the continuum of cognitive impairment from healthy to dementia. CSF predicted subsequent decline in more cognitive domains among MCI cases, but the impact was most pronounced in patients with dementia.

  • On-demand Generation of Views to Support Online Evolution of Software Product Lines
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th SEI Architecture Technology User Network Conference. - : Software Engineering Institute.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is difficult to achieve assured conformance between architecture and code. We lacked proper architecture descriptions in the context of the evolution of an industrial software product line of logistic systems. As a result, a lack of explicit architecture documentation about the deployed products led to ad hoc update practices, which were error prone and resulted in unnecessary and undesirable shutdowns. To tackle these problems, we have codified the architecture knowledge required for evolving products in a viewpoint. Based on this viewpoint, we developed a supporting tool that allows generating on-demand architecture models. These models guide maintainers by listing the concrete tasks they need to perform when upgrading a system and by showing inconsistencies when they fail to do so. The evaluation of 68 updates of industrial logistic systems demonstrates a significant improvement in the quality of system updates with respect to the correct execution of updates and a reduced interruption of services.

  • Julius : a template based supplementary electronic health record system
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making. - London, United Kingdom : BioMed Central. - 1472-6947. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: EHR systems are widely used in hospitals and primary care centres but it is usually difficult to share information and to collect patient data for clinical research. This is partly due to the different proprietary information models and inconsistent data quality. Our objective was to provide a more flexible solution enabling the clinicians to define which data to be recorded and shared for both routine documentation and clinical studies. The data should be possible to reuse through a common set of variable definitions providing a consistent nomenclature and validation of data. Another objective was that the templates used for the data entry and presentation should be possible to use in combination with the existing EHR systems. Methods: We have designed and developed a template based system (called Julius) that was integrated with existing EHR systems. The system is driven by the medical domain knowledge defined by clinicians in the form of templates and variable definitions stored in a common data repository. The system architecture consists of three layers. The presentation layer is purely web-based, which facilitates integration with existing EHR products. The domain layer consists of the template design system, a variable/clinical concept definition system, the transformation and validation logic all implemented in Java. The data source layer utilizes an object relational mapping tool and a relational database. Results: The Julius system has been implemented, tested and deployed to three health care units in Stockholm, Sweden. The initial responses from the pilot users were positive. The template system facilitates patient data collection in many ways. The experience of using the template system suggests that enabling the clinicians to be in control of the system, is a good way to add supplementary functionality to the present EHR systems. Conclusion: The approach of the template system in combination with various local EHR systems can facilitate the sharing and reuse of validated clinical information from different health care units. However, future system developments for these purposes should consider using the openEHR/CEN models with shareable archetypes.

  • Not Speaking or Acting as Anti-Social Feminism and Unbecoming Woman : A Queer Reading of Silence in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony Trilogy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Barnboken. - : The Swedish Institute for Children's Books. - 0347-772X .- 2000-4389. ; 45, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to explore the queer possibilities of the silence in the depiction of the protagonist’s love life in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony trilogy (1922–1926). The silence in the trilogy is manifested through absence: the theme of “ingenting” (nothing), the protagonist not speaking or acting, and the aesthetic that is created by interruptions in the protagonist’s dialogue, inner monologue, and narration. The analysis focuses on three passages: a depiction of an encounter between Tony and one of her suitors, her relative Frank Maclean, in Tonys läroår (Tony’s Apprenticeship, 1924); the ending of the trilogy in Tonys sista läroår (Tony’s Last Apprenticeship, 1926); and an epilogue to the trilogy, which was never included in it but later published in the second, expanded edition of En dagdriverskas anteckningar (The Notes of a Flâneuse, 1934). They are contextualised with references to the trilogy as a whole and compared to Krusenstjerna’s previous novels Ninas dagbok (The Diary of Nina, 1917) and Helenas första kärlek (Helena’s First Love, 1918). The method is a close reading with instead of against the grain, focusing on queer aspects of depictions of heterosexuality. It draws on theory belonging to the anti-social turn of queer studies and queer temporality studies. My conclusion is that Tony not speaking or acting can be read as anti-social feminism, with Tony as an anti-social feminist subject. Her queer life schedule can be interpreted as unbecoming woman. The “nothing,” and implicitly the creativity, that her passivity leads to accomplishes the opposite of patriarchal and chrononormative structures. The narrative and its ending are queer in the sense that they refuse to cohere and to fulfil demands for a happy, emancipatory ending.

  • Trajectories of low back pain from midlife to retirement and functional ability at old age
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Public Health. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1101-1262 .- 1464-360X. ; 32:3, s. 497-503
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: This study aimed to identify trajectories of low back pain (LBP) over a 16-year follow-up from midlife to retirement and investigate their association with mobility limitations and disability in activities of daily living (ADL-disability) in later life. Methods: The study population consisted of 6257 baseline (1981) respondents aged 44–58 years from Finnish Longitudinal study on Aging Municipal Employees. Repeated measurements of LBP were collected in 1985, 1992 and 1997. We studied persons who had data on LBP at baseline and in at least one of the follow-ups and had information on mobility limitations (n = 2305) and ADL-disability (n = 2359) at a 28-year follow-up in 2009. Latent class growth analysis was used to identify LBP trajectories. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations of LBP trajectory and later life mobility limitations and ADL-disability were estimated and adjusted for confounders. Results: Three LBP trajectories with parallel shapes were identified: high-decreasing (19%), intermediate-stable (60%) and low (21%). After adjustment for confounders, high-decreasing trajectory had 3.2 times the odds (95% CI 2.1–4.9) of mobility limitations and 2.9 times the odds (95% CI 2.0–4.2) of ADL-disability as compared to low trajectory. The respective ORs for intermediate-stable trajectory were 1.6 (95% CI 1.2–2.1) and 1.7 (95% CI 1.3–2.3). Conclusions: Among majority of respondents, LBP remained stable over the follow-up. The respondents belonging to intermediate-stable and high-decreasing trajectories of LBP had higher odds of mobility limitations and ADL-disability at old age. This highlights that LBP during midlife to retirement has far-reached consequences on functional ability at old age.

  • Synthesis of Controllers from a Range of Controller Architectures
  • 1994
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An algorithm specific digital signal processor is a powerful alternative to a general purpose signal processor for demanding specifications such as high throughput, low power, small size, etc. These properties are achieved as the processor architecture is tailored to the algorithm as opposed to the general purpose architecture which must suit a wide range of algorithms. The increased performance is traded for reduced flexibility of the final circuit and an increased design effort. Consequently powerful CAD-tools are needed to decrease the design effort. This thesis presents COMA, a CAD-tool for synthesis of controllers suitable for a wide range of digital signal processing algorithms and application fields. COMA synthesizes a complete controller with all modules and interconnection specifications. COMA has been developed with the intention of being used by an active designer where his knowledge, skills, and experience is best utilized. An automated synthesis process can be performed but is preferably refined to a competitive solution using designer interaction before a circuit is fabricated. The main reason for designing an algorithm specific digital signal processors is the possibility to use an architecture dedicated to the algorithm. Consequently, COMA supports arbitrary datapath architectures and does not impose any restrictions. This is crucial in order to fully exploit the advantages of an algorithm specific design. Results presented in this thesis and the discussion regarding controller architectures show that different controller architectures are suitable for different algorithms and different implementation techniques of the fabricated circuit. Thus, COMA can synthesize a range of controller architectures suitable for these different needs. This approach, I believe, is unique for COMA. Standard controller architectures have been modified to suit application specific digital signal processing design and new solutions have been developed. Using COMA complex algorithm specific digital signals processors for a wide range of applications can be designed with a considerable reduction in design effort compared to a hand made design.
