  • The effect of a midfoot cut in the outer sole of a shoe on intrinsic foot kinematics during walking.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Footwear Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1942-4280 .- 1942-4299. ; 5:1, s. 63-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modifications in shoe outer soles are frequently made with the intention of altering biomechanics of the foot inside the shoe. These modifications are however, generally based upon intuition with little or no scientific data for support. The purpose of this study was to quantify changes in intrinsic foot segmental kinematics between walking in a neutral shoe and a shoe modified with a clear cut forming a break underneath the midfoot, approximating the Lisfrancs joint.Five healthy male subjects participated in the study. Intracortical pins were inserted under sterile conditions and local anaesthetic in nine different bones of the foot and shank. The subjects performed 10 walking trials in both a neutral, standard, flatsoled, flexible walking shoe and in the same shoe with an approximately 1 cm deep cut aligned with the subjects’ Lisfrancs joint. Material tests showed that the cut reduced midfoot shoe bending stiffness by 23% to 38% and torsional stiffness by 23% to 28%. A helical axis approach was applied for calculating the 3D rotations about relevant joints.Kinematic trajectories in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes were normalised to the stance phase for seven selected joints to compare rotation patterns when wearing the two shoe conditions. Although one out of 21 ranges of motion (ROM) showed a significant difference, there is strong reason to regard this as the result of a type 1 error. Apart from this no differences in ROM occurred between the shoe conditions. The low subject number reduced the statistical power of the results. However, the study indicated that outer sole modifications that may be assumed to have clear effects upon foot kinematics, do not necessarily do so.

  • Strengthening Concrete Structures using Mineral Based Composites
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Symposium on Fiber Reinforced Polymer for Reinforced Concrete Structures. - : Universidade do Minho. - 9789728692841
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last two decades, strengthening concrete structures with epoxy bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) has shown excellent results in increasing bearing capacity. However, there are some limitations with epoxy coated concrete surfaces, e.g.; low permeability which may provoke freeze/thaw problems, poor thermal compatibility to the concrete substrate which makes epoxy coating more sensitive to the surrounding temperature and regulations when it comes to the security and health (allergic reactions) of applicators and third party users. In this respect, using mineral based composites (MBC) may overcome some of these challenges associated with epoxy bonded strengthening systems. MBC, in this context, refers to high strength fibers bonded to the surface using a mineral based bonding agent. This study examines the cracking behavior and strain development of shear MBC strengthened RC beams. The results show that using MBC as shear strengthening postpones the formation of macro-cracks and that a considerable strengthening effect is achieved by using MBC.

  • The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey : First Spectroscopic Data from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the Second Phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 0067-0049 .- 1538-4365. ; 235:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020 and will be followed by SDSS-V.

  • Occupational inequalities in psychoactive substance use : A question of conceptualization?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Addiction Research and Theory. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1058-6989 .- 1606-6359 .- 1476-7392. ; 24:3, s. 186-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Three different conceptualizations of occupational prestige were contrasted by applying social stratification to four exemplarily selected psychoactive substances. Although these conceptualizations partly measure the same construct, it is hypothesized that the gradient of occupational inequality differs depending on the type of conceptualization. Method: Data were taken from the 2012 German Epidemiological Survey of Substance Abuse. The study sample comprised n = 9084 individuals of the general population aged 18–64 years. Use and heavy use of cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis and analgesics were stratified by (a) employment status (six groups: employed, marginally employed, apprenticeship, unemployed, retired and other), (b) occupational status (five groups: low to high) and (c) occupational social class (two groups: blue-collar and white-collar). Absolute and relative differences between occupational groups were calculated. All analyses were stratified by gender. Results: Risk for smoking was increased amongst unemployed males and blue-collar workers. Retired persons, people with low occupational status and female blue-collar workers had a diminished risk for alcohol consumption; apprentices had an increased risk. Amongst males, low occupational status and blue-collar work was associated with episodic heavy drinking. Unemployment and blue-collar work was related to cannabis use. Risk for heavy analgesics use was increased amongst unemployed women, men with low occupational status and male blue-collar workers, respectively. Conclusions: The results suggest that occupational inequality differs depending on the applied conceptualizations of occupational prestige. Consequently, they should not be used interchangeably.

  • Actuator and sensor placement for closed-loop control of convective instabilities
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics. - : Springer. - 0935-4964 .- 1432-2250.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work deals with the characterization of the closed-loop control performance aiming at the delay of transition. We focus on convective wavepackets, typical of the initial stages of transition to turbulence, starting with the linearized Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation as a model problem representative of the transitional 2D boundary layer; its simplified structure and reduced order provide a manageable framework for the study of fundamental concepts involving the control of linear wavepackets. The characterization is then extended to the 2D Blasius boundary layer. The objective of this study is to explore how the sensor–actuator placement affects the optimal control problem, formulated using linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) regulators. This is carried out by evaluating errors of the optimal estimator at positions where control gains are significant, through a proposed metric, labelled as $$\gamma $$γ. Results show, in quantitative manner, why some choices of sensor–actuator placement are more effective than others for flow control: good (respectively, bad) closed-loop performance is obtained when estimation errors are low (respectively, high) in the regions with significant gains in the full-state-feedback problem. Unsatisfactory performance is further understood as dominant estimation error modes that overlap spatially with control gains, which shows directions for improvement of a given set-up by moving sensors or actuators. The proposed metric and analysis explain most trends in closed-loop performance as a function of sensor and actuator position, obtained for the model problem and for the 2D Blasius boundary layer. The spatial characterization of the $$\gamma $$γ-metric provides thus a valuable and intuitive tool for the problem of sensor–actuator placement, targeting here transition delay but possibly extending to other amplifier-type flows.
