  • Requirement of neurotrophin-3 for the survival of proliferating trigeminal ganglion progenitor cells
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Development (Cambridge, England). - : The Company of Biologists. - 0950-1991 .- 1477-9129. ; 122:8, s. 2405-2414
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to identify the physiological role of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) in the development of trigeminal ganglion sensory neurons. For this purpose we have analysed mice carrying a deletion in the NT-3 gene (NT3−/− mice). In these mice, by embryonic day (E) 11, 25% of the trigeminal ganglion neurons were absent and one day later, approximately 50% were absent, after which no further significant changes were observed. Mice carrying one functional NT-3 gene (NT-3+/− mice) displayed a less severe deficit than that of NT-3−/− mice. Whereas programmed cell death occurred between E12 and E14 in the control mice, pronounced excessive cell death was apparent prior to this in the NT-3−/− mice. The excessive cell death led to a progressive decline in the number of proliferating cells without a significant change in the fraction of dividing cells and total number of neurons, indicating that the neuronal deficit of NT-3−/− mice was caused by cell death of trigeminal ganglion progenitors. Furthermore, the degenerating cells had incorporated BrdU, a nucleotide analogue which labels proliferating cells, and expressed nestin, a marker for progenitor cells. Only rarely were degenerating cells seen to express peripherin, present in postmitotic neurons. These data provide evidence that NT3 is a survival factor for trigeminal ganglion progenitor cells, and suggests that limiting amounts of NT-3 could influence progenitor cell numbers during gangliogenesis.

  • On the Use of a Multivariable Frequency Response Function Estimation Method for Closed Loop Identification
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 43rd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 0780386825 ; , s. 827-832
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method for estimating the Multivariable Frequency Response Function using closed loop data is studied. An approximate expression for the estimation error is derived, and using this expression some properties of the estimation error can be explained. Of particular interest is how the model quality is affected by the properties of the disturbances, the choice of excitation signal in the different input channels, the feedback and the properties of the system itself. The expression is illustrated by simulation data from an industrial robot.

  • Ice streams in the Laurentide Ice Sheet : a new mapping inventory
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Maps. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1744-5647. ; 11:3, s. 380-395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapidly flowing ice streams dominate the drainage of continental ice sheets and are a key component of their mass balance. Due to their potential impact on sea level, their activity in the Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets has undergone detailed scrutiny in recent decades. However, these observations only cover a fraction of their 'life-span' and the subglacial processes that facilitate their rapid flow are very difficult to observe. To circumvent these problems, numerous workers have highlighted the potential of investigating palaeo-ice streams tracks, preserved in the landform and sedimentary record of former ice sheets. As such, it is becoming increasingly important to know where and when palaeo-ice streams operated. In this paper, we present a new map of ice streams in the North American Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS; including the Innuitian Ice Sheet), which was the largest of the ephemeral Pleistocene ice sheets and where numerous ice streams have been identified. We compile previously published evidence of ice stream activity and complement it with new mapping to generate the most complete and consistent mapping inventory to date. The map depicts close to three times as many ice streams (117 in total) compared to previous inventories, and categorises them according to the evidence they left behind, with some locations more speculative than others. The map considerably refines our understanding of LIS dynamics, but there is a clear requirement for improved dating of ice stream activity.

  • On the performativity of university ranking lists: commodity aesthetics and looping. : A keynote given at the symposium “Use and Abuse of International University Rankings ”. Barcelona July 2012.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The university: An institution of Society. - 9788499213002 ; , s. 77-79
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In focus of this keynote is the performativity of university rankings. I will present and discuss how different kinds of university rankings are constructed and their specific ways of understanding and presenting higher education and research. Here I will focus on their one-dimensionality and potential bias in ambitions to capture the academia in terms of ranking as presented by the Shanghai ranking list ”Academic Ranking of World Universities, and the World University Ranking lists – presented by Times Higher Education (THE) and Quaquarelli Symonds (QS) respectively. I will also put forwards some features of the Webometrics list. In relation to this I will also deal with the multidimensional ranking of higher education institutions the so called U-multirank that now is under construction with the support of the European Commission. A first point to be made is that university ranking is a way to transform the multitude of university qualities in education and research, as well as engagement in social activities, into a political economy of easily visible ranking positions (jfr Marginson, 2009) presenting the higher education institutions as comparable units in one or more dimensions. Academic activities are translated into a set of comparable indictors who in turn are conceived of as presenting the exchange-value of specific HEIs. A second point is that this political economy is biased – standards are set by a number of indicators favoring certain kinds of higher education activities predominant in certain Anglo-Saxon universities. These two points concern how ranking lists represent higher education and research institutions. A third point concerns if such a representation matter? An explicit idea of ranking lists is that they should have an impact on higher education institutions for university clients as well as for university governance. I will discuss such potential performative qualities with looping implications (Hacking, 2004) for higher education research. Here I will be informed by a current study in Sweden by Sundén (in process) inspired by Espeland & Sauder, (2007) and Hazelkorn (2009) of how Swedish Vice-chancellors are acting upon international university ranking lists.
