- Despite the success of several international initiatives the glycosciences still lack a managed infrastructure that contributes to the advancement of research through the provision of comprehensive structural and experimental glycan data collections. UniCarbKB is an initiative that aims to promote the creation of an online information storage and search platform for glycomics and glycobiology research. The knowledgebase will offer a freely accessible and information-rich resource supported by querying interfaces, annotation technologies and the adoption of common standards to integrate structural, experimental and functional data. The UniCarbKB framework endeavors to support the growth of glycobioinformatics and the dissemination of knowledge through the provision of an open and unified portal to encourage the sharing of data. In order to achieve this, the framework is committed to the development of tools and procedures that support data annotation, and expanding interoperability through cross-referencing of existing databases. - Jane Addams referred to herself as a sociologist, but what Addams is remembered for today has little to do either with her reputation as a scholar, or with the sociological articles and books that she wrote for sociological audiences. She is instead remembered for the activities that she regarded as comprising important spheres of application of her professional skills and knowledge, not as the essence of her professional calling, such as acting as a public intellectual in service to the cause of social justice, equality, and social welfare. The sociological community was quite reluctant throughout the twentieth century to acknowledge her status as a professional sociologist and a founder of the discipline. Addams’ recognition as sociologist is closely related to, and in fact inseparable from, the recovery of the sociological identity of her Hull-House. However, gaining a clear understanding of the latter entails sorting out the relationships between sociology and social work, which have remained problematic ever since the two disciplines were separated, as well as acknowledging that Hull-House is an historical site important for the emergence and institutionalization of sociology. After the many works on Addams which have been written from a sense of duty, solidarity, or political correctness, now is the time to look beyond ‘what is the case’ in order to find out ‘what lies behind it.’ The present text addresses important questions in a way that promises to revitalize the discussion and lead it in new directions.

- We study the boundedness of rough Fourier integral and pseudodifferential operators, defined by general rough Hörmander class amplitudes, on Banach and quasi-Banach LpLp spaces. Thereafter we apply the aforementioned boundedness in order to improve on some of the existing boundedness results for Hörmander class bilinear pseudodifferential operators and certain classes of bilinear (as well as multilinear) Fourier integral operators. For these classes of amplitudes, the boundedness of the aforementioned Fourier integral operators turn out to be sharp. Furthermore we also obtain results for rough multilinear operators.

The Evaluation of the Gaussian Mixture Probability Hypothesis Density Approach for Multi-target Tracking

- This paper describes the performance of the Gaussian Mixture Probability Hypothesis Density (GM-PHD) filter for multiple human tracking in an intelligent vision system. Human movement trajectories were observed with a camera and tracked by the GM-PHD filter. The filter multi-target tracking ability was validated by two random motion trajectories in the paper. To evaluate the filter performance in relation to the target movement, the motion velocity and angular velocity as key evaluation factors were proposed. A circular motion model was implemented for simplified analysis of the filter tracking performance. The results indicate that the mean absolute error defined as the difference between the filter prediction and the ground truth is proportional to the motion speed and angular velocity of the target. The error is only slightly affected by the tracking targets’ number.

- In this chapter, we show that while the carbon emission allowance futures market, which is still emerging, has gained relative little popularity among investors it can present attractive diversification opportunities for investors. Our findings show that the exposure of these futures returns to equity returns as well as the value factor is low but increases with stock market stress. As our further analysis suggests that investors can also profit from negative convenience yield in carbon emission futures by taking short positions in them, the strategy can be an attractive addition to equity portfolios. We note that potential reasons for the lack of popularity are poor liquidity, lack of investors' attention to the investments, investment ambiguity, and investment constraints. Nevertheless, carbon emission allowances and environmental investments of its kind can be important portfolio diversifiers in future.

Managing resilience to reverse phase shifts in coral reefs

- Both coral-dominated and degraded reef ecosystems can be resistant to change. Typically, research and management have focused on maintaining coral dominance and avoiding phase shifts to other species compositions, rather than on weakening the resilience of already degraded reefs to re-establish coral dominance. Reversing degraded coral-reef states will involve reducing local chronic drivers like fishing pressure and poor water quality. Reversals will also require management of key ecological processes - such as those performed by different functional groups of marine herbivores - that both weaken the resilience of the degraded state and strengthen the coral-dominated state. If detrimental human impacts are reduced and key ecological processes are enhanced, pulse disturbances, such as extreme weather events, and ecological variability may provide opportunities for a return to a coral-dominated state. Critically, achieving these outcomes will necessitate a diverse range of integrated approaches to alter human interactions with reef ecosystems.
