  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Large-Area, Semitransparent, and Flexible All-Polymer Photodetectors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 28:48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photodetectors, converting optical signals from specific wavelengths to electrical signals, have many applications on photoimaging, optical communication, and environmental monitoring. Solution-processed organic photodetectors (OPDs) based on organic materials emerge promise especially for wearable electronics and smart buildings. In this work, new all-polymer photodetectors (all-PPDs) are developed based on bulk-heterojunction active layers which incorporate a donor polymer and an acceptor polymer. The inverted all-PPDs exhibit outstanding external quantum efficiency over 70%, low dark current density (J(d)) of 1.1 x 10(-8) A cm(-2), and high detectivity (D*) over 3.0 x 10(12) Jones with planar response over the entire visible range. It is one of the best-performing all-PPDs reported so far and is also comparable with many organic and inorganic photodetectors. By using lamination technique, large-area, semitransparent, flexible, and "fully" polymeric photodetectors are successfully fabricated for the first time, with D* over 10(11) Jones for double-side light detection. The results highlight the great potential for producing high-performance all-PPDs by taking advantages of various device architecture and solution-processing techniques.

  • A bimetallic 3D interconnected metal–organic framework with 2D morphology and its derived electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: CrystEngComm. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1466-8033. ; 25:13, s. 1869-1873
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used as precursors to generate derivatives for electrocatalysis. However, two-dimensional (2D) MOFs often suffer from the collapse of their 2D structures after being treated at high temperature. Herein, we used the dense ZIF-EC1 as a precursor and doped Co as a secondary metal. The content of Co in ZIF-EC1 can be tuned without changing the crystalline structure. After pyrolysis, the derived carbon-based material maintains the 2D morphology from the parental precursor. The derived ZIF-EC1(ZnCo)-20-900 exhibits the best activity toward the ORR, which is even better than that of Pt/C. This work demonstrates the potential of using a nonporous dense MOF as a precursor and optimizing electrocatalytic ORR activity by tuning the Co content.

  • Non-fullerene acceptor with low energy loss and high external quantum efficiency: towards high performance polymer solar cells
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 4:16, s. 5890-5897
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A non-fullerene electron acceptor bearing a fused 10-heterocyclic ring (indacenodithiophenoindacenodithiophene) with a narrow band gap (similar to 1.5 eV) was designed and synthesized. It possesses excellent planarity and enhanced effective conjugation length compared to previously reported fused-ring electron acceptors. When this acceptor was paired with PTB7-Th and applied in polymer solar cells, a power conversion efficiency of 6.5% was achieved with a high open circuit voltage of 0.94 V. More significantly, an energy loss as low as 0.59 eV and an external quantum efficiency as high as 63% were obtained simultaneously.

  • Technology Roadmap for Flexible Sensors
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society. - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 17:6, s. 5211-5295
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

  • Novel Dilute Bismides for IR Optoelectronics Applications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Asia Communications and Photonics Conference, ACP. - Washington, D.C. : OSA. - 2162-108X.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • III-V-Bi compounds reveal a number of attractive physical properties promising for novel IR optoelectronic applications [1,2] and have received considerable attention as witnessed by the dedicated international workshops on this topic in the consecutive past four years. The isoelectronic nature of Bi atoms in III-Vs induces strong interactions with the energy bands of host materials leading to large band-gap reduction, less temperature sensitive band-gap and large spin-orbit split band. So far the most studied material is Ga(N)AsBi, while other dilute bismides have also been reported recently. In this paper, we shall briefly review several novel bismides: GaSbBi, InSbiBi, InAsBi, InPBi and InGaAsBi, and the Bi surfactant effect from our group, all grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).

  • Effects of Nonradiative Losses at Charge Transfer States and Energetic Disorder on the Open-Circuit Voltage in Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 28:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The considerable improvement on the power conversion efficiency (PCE) for emerging nonfullerene polymer solar cells is still limited by considerable voltage losses that have become one of the most significant obstacles in further boosting desired photovoltaic performance. Here, a comprehensive study is reported to understand the impacts of charge transport, energetic disorder, and charge transfer states (CTS) on the losses in open-circuit voltage (V-oc) based on three high performing bulk heterojunction solar cells with the best PCE exceeding 11%. It is found that the champion poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b]dithiophene)-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c]dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T):IT-M solar cell (PCE = 11.5%) is associated with the least disorder. The determined energetic disorder in part reconciles the difference in V-oc between the solar cells. A reduction is observed in the nonradiative losses (V-nonrad) coupled with the increase of energy of CTS for the PBDB-T:IT-M device, which may be related to the improved balance in carrier mobilities, and partially can explain the gain in V-oc. The determined radiative limit for V-oc combined with the V-nonrad generates an excellent agreement for the V-oc with the experimental values. The results suggest that minimizing the energetic disorder related to transport and CTS is critical for the mitigation of V-oc losses and improvements on the device performance.

  • Structural and functional hippocampal alterations in Multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Multiple Sclerosis Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 1352-4585 .- 1477-0970. ; 28:5, s. 707-717
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Hippocampal involvement may differ between multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Objective: To investigate the morphometric, diffusion and functional alterations in hippocampus in MS and NMOSD and the clinical significance. Methods: A total of 752 participants including 236 MS, 236 NMOSD and 280 healthy controls (HC) were included in this retrospective multi-center study. The hippocampus and subfield volumes, fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD), amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and degree centrality (DC) were analyzed, and their associations with clinical variables were investigated. Results: The hippocampus showed significantly lower volume, FA and greater MD in MS compared to NMOSD and HC (p < 0.05), while no abnormal ALFF or DC was identified in any group. Hippocampal subfields were affected in both diseases, though subiculum, presubiculum and fimbria showed significantly lower volume only in MS (p < 0.05). Significant correlations between diffusion alterations, several subfield volumes and clinical variables were observed in both diseases, especially in MS (R = -0.444 to 0.498, p < 0.05). FA and MD showed fair discriminative power between MS and HC, NMOSD and HC (AUC > 0.7). Conclusions: Hippocampal atrophy and diffusion abnormalities were identified in MS and NMOSD, partly explaining how clinical disability and cognitive impairment are differentially affected.
