    • Cataract surgery, meaning exchange of the opaque lens in the eye with an artificial lens, is nowadays one of the most successful surgical procedures ever known. It is also the most frequent surgery performed in the Western world. In Sweden alone, more than 100,000 cataract operations are performed annually. Severe complications are rare, occurring only in a few percent of the patients, but owing to the large number of surgeries even infrequent complications amount to a substantial number of patients. The aim of this thesis was to study two different complications – retinal detachment (RD) and late artificial intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation – and to analyze inflammatory mediators in the vitreous of phakic (no previous cataract surgery) and pseudophakic (previous cataract surgery with IOL) eyes. Methods: Paper I is a multicenter case-control study evaluating the incidence and outcome of RD in eyes experiencing a perioperative complication with rupture of the lens capsule. Paper II and III are studies on patients with late IOL dislocation with a retrospective and a prospective observational design respectively. In paper IV the level of inflammatory immune mediators was measured in vitreous from phakic and pseudophakic patients. Results: The risk of developing RD after cataract surgery with a capsular rupture increased more than ten fold during the three-year follow-up period. Multivariate analyzes showed an odds ratio (OR) of 14.8 for RD. Additional risk factors were male sex (OR = 8.5) and lens remnants in the vitreous (OR = 14.4). The majority (62%) of eyes experiencing RD had a poor visual outcome of 0.1 or less. In patients with late IOL dislocation the median time to repositioning surgery was 6.5 years. This interval was significantly shorter in older patients and in eyes with perioperative complications (3.2 years). Pseudoexfoliations (PXF) were present in 60% of the patients and 36% had glaucoma. The annual incidence of late IOL dislocation in the pseudophakic population was calculated to 0.05%. Repositioning of the dislocated IOL with scleral sutures and a high frequency of pars plana vitrectomy procedures resulted in few complications and 59% of the patients obtained a visual acuity of ≥0.5. In patients with IOL dislocation and glaucoma, improved intraocular pressure (IOP) control was observed. Vitreous samples revealed significantly higher and sustained levels of immune mediators in pseudophakic eyes compared to phakic eyes. Conclusions: RD following capsule rupture results in profound visual loss in the majority of patients. Late IOL dislocation requiring reconstructive surgery occurs annually in 1/2000 pseudophakic patients. Risk factors are initially complicated cataract surgery, PXF and old age. The prognosis after repositioning surgery is good and IOP control in glaucoma patients is improved. Cataract surgery and pseudophakia induce elevated and sustained levels of inflammatory immune mediators in the vitreous.

    • Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at six center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.600 GeV, we observe the processes e(+)e(-) -> phi phi omega and e(-)e(-) -> phi phi phi. The Born cross sections are measured and the ratio of the cross sections sigma(e(+)e(-) -> phi phi omega)/sigma(e(-)e(-) -> phi phi phi) is estimated to be 1.75 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.19 averaged over six energy points, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The results represent first measurements of these interactions.

  • Measurement of the inclusive branching fraction for ψ(3686) →K0S+anything

    • Using 5.9 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies from 3.640 to 3.701 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII Collider, we measure the observed cross sections of e(+)e(-) -> (KSX)-X-0 (where X = anything). From a fit to these observed cross sections with the sum of continuum and psi(3686) and J/psi Breit-Wigner functions and considering initial state radiation and the BEPCII beam energy spread, we obtain for the first time the product of psi(3686) leptonic width and inclusive decay Physics Letters 820 (2021) 136576 branching fraction Gamma B-ee(psi)(3686)(psi(3686) -> (KSX)-X-0) = (373.8 +/- 6.7 +/- 20.0) eV, and assuming Gamma(ee)(psi)((3686)) is (2.33 +/- 0.04) keV from PDG value, we measure B(psi(3686) ->(KSX)-X-0) = (16.04 +/- 0.29 +/- 0.90)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

  • Observation of the Semileptonic D+ Decay into the (K)over-bar(1)(1270)(0) Axial-Vector Meson

    • By analyzing a 2.93 fb(-1) data sample of e(+)e(-) collisions, recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we report the first observation of the semileptonic D+ transition into the axial-vector meson D+ -> (K) over bar (1) (1270)(0)e(+)nu(e) with a statistical significance greater than 10 sigma. Its decay branching fraction is determined to be B[D+ -> (K) over bar (1) (1270)(0)e(+)nu(e)] = (2.30 +/- 0.26(-0.21)(+0.18) +/- 0.25) x 10(-3), where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third originates from the input branching fraction of (K) over bar (1)(1270)(0) -> K-pi(+)pi(0).

  • Search for invisible decays of a dark photon using e(+)e(-) annihilation data at BESIII

    • We report a search for a dark photon using 14.9 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data taken at center-of-mass energies from 4.13 to 4.60 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring. The dark photon is assumed to be produced in the radiative annihilation process of e(+)e(-) and to predominantly decay into light dark matter particles, which escape from the detector undetected. The mass range from 1.5 to 2.9 GeV is scanned for the dark photon candidate, and no significant signal is observed. The mass dependent upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the coupling strength parameter epsilon for a dark photon coupling with an ordinary photon vary between 1.6 x 10(-3) and 5.7 x 10(-3).

    • Utilizing the data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.19 fb(-1) collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV, we perform an amplitude analysis of the D-s(+) -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(+) decay. The sample contains 13,797 candidates with a signal purity of similar to 80%. The amplitude and phase of the contributing pi pi S wave are measured based on a quasi-model-independent approach, along with the amplitudes and phases of the P and D waves parametrized by Breit-Wigner models. The fit fractions of different intermediate decay channels are also reported.

  • Amplitude analysis of D0 → K -π+π+π-

    • We present an amplitude analysis of the decay D0 → K -π+π+π- based on a data sample of 2.93  fb−1 acquired by the BESIII detector at the ψ(3770) resonance. With a nearly background free sample of about 16000 events, we investigate the substructure of the decay and determine the relative fractions and the phases among the different intermediate processes. Our amplitude model includes the two-body decays D0 → ¯K*0ρ0, D0 → K−a+1(1260) and D0 → K−1(1270)π+, the three-body decays D0 →¯K*0π+π− and D0 → K−π+ρ0, as well as the four-body nonresonant decay D0 → K−π+π+π−. The dominant intermediate process is D0 → K−a+1(1260), accounting for a fit fraction of 54.6%.

    • Using 448.0 x 10(6) psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, an amplitude analysis is performed for psi(3686) -> gamma chi(c1), chi(c1) ->eta pi(+)pi(-) decays. The most dominant two- body structure observed is a(0)(980)(+/-) pi(-/+); a(0)(980)(+/-) -> eta pi(+/-.) line shape is modeled using a dispersion relation, and a significant nonzero a(0) (980) coupling to the eta'pi channel is measured. We observe chi(c1) -> a(2)(1700)pi production for the first time, with a significance larger than 17 sigma. The production of mesons with exotic quantum numbers, J(PC) = 1(-+), is investigated, and upper limits for the branching fractions chi(c1) -> pi(1)(1400)(+/-)pi(-/+) , chi(c1) -> pi(1)(1600)(+/-)pi(-/+) and chi(c1) -> pi 1(2015)(+/-)pi(-/+) with subsequent pi(1)(X)(+/-) -> eta pi(+/-) decay, are determined.
